Solved: No sound over HDMI - HP Pavilion dv3510nr Entertainment Notebook PC

I bought an HP Pavilion dv3510nr in April 2009 (4G Ram, Vista Home Premium 64Bit).  As I did not have access to any HDMI devices I didn’t have the opportunity to use the HDMI output. Recently I obtained an HDMI TV and when I connected the dv3510nr the video worked fine, but there was no sound. Set the default playback device to Digital Output Device (S/PDIF/HDMI); this made no difference. Over many days I tried various suggestions regarding possible solutions, all without success.
Shortly after buying the laptop, I visited NVIDIA’s web sit and updated the original video drivers to the latest version (version 186.03). According to the NVIDIA, the 186.X drivers offer a very significant performance increase for many applications, and also include PhysX system software for hardware acceleration.
Checked HP’s support page for my model here, and found that the latest drivers provided by HP were version 7.15.11.7903, (Called NVIDIA NB9M-GS Graphics Drivers).
Decided to replace my current drivers with these older ones. This was harder than I expected. Downloading and running the exe file (sp41695.exe) did not replace the existing 186.03 drivers. Using the control panel to uninstall both the drivers and the PhysX software seemed to work, but on rebooting, the drivers were automatically re-installed. I also used Device Manager to uninstall them. Eventually I succeeded and again tried to install the older drivers provided by HP; this time I received an error message saying that I was “Trying to use a 32-bit uninstaller on a 64-bit system”. The program sp41695.exe initially creates a folder C:\SWSetup\SP41695 that contains several files including a setup.exe file and two other folders: WinVista32 and WinVista64. Each of these also contains setup.exe files. I ran the setup.exe file in the WinVista64 folder. This successfully installed both the video and sound drivers for my graphics card. HDMI sound has worked fine since then. Needless to say, from now on I will only install drivers etc. from HP website!
Hope this saves someone else some time.

Here is a thread and it seems like one person got it to work by uninstalling and reinstalling but I didn't read it that carefully.  There does seem to be a problem with getting a real windows 7 driver:
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-PC-Sound-and-Audio/Conexant-High-Definition-Audio-Driver-for-W...
Here is another thread (not HP) that said he forced the driver and got it to work:

  • Qosmio G50 No sound over HDMI

*Qosmio G50 No sound over HDMI*
    Hi all,
Hopefully anyone recognises the following and would be so kind to help me. I have searched the forum and tried severall of the offered solutions mainly applicable to Vista, but still.
I hooked up my Qosmio G50 to my Philips LCD by HDMI cable. Picture is ok but there is no sound. I tested the cable with a Toshiba Satelite Pro L550 and it works allright. Picture and Sound are working. But that laptop has Intel HDMI audio.
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I upgraded by Toshiba update DVD from Vista 64 bit. Sadly I do not know for sure if HDMI audio did work before that. I think so because I did use the laptop for watching a movie on a Panasonic plasma. But I can not remember if that was before or after the upgrade.
Realtek HD Audio device is installed driver version 6.0.1.5923
Realtek HDMI Output is selected als default playback device.
Testing gives me graphical response ( the indicator flashes ) but no audible sound from my tv.
Choosing the other audio device Realtek Digital output changes nothing and I do not believe that this would work anyway.
I have tried removing the device and reinstalling the original drivers. I have tried REaltek drivers from their website.
I have tried changing the view to HDMI only but that does nog change anything either.
One thing that worries me is that under Sound / Realtek HDMI Output / properties / Supported Formats there are no formats present. The Satelite gives me DTS audio and some other. So I am wondering if there should be formats present and if so how can I change this / add any.
Please forgive me if there are errors in the text. I am translating this from a dutch language version of Windows 7.
Please help me. Any suggestions are welcome!

Jeka-?? & PinkPanther thanks for your replies!
The solution for the G30 you mention is not the one for me I am sorry to say. I have tried that one allready. Windows automatically switches on the HDMI audio out when I connect an HDMI cable. Connecting the cable before switching on the TV and laptop is a good thing to try because it eliminates possible problems with the connection. The connection in my case is ok.
At some point I concluded that there must be a softwareproblem of some sort.
I have found the solution over night. Could not sleep anyway. I did not know that the videodrivers are also handling HDMI audio out but in a way it makes sense. I have completely deinstalled the NVIDIA video drivers. After downloading the latest drivers and installing them everything works absolutely fine!

  • Sound over HDMI works, but laptop sound isn't working after...

    Hey,
First, sound over HDMI was not working on my laptop, but when I followed this section of Alsa Wiki it worked.
So I created the ~/.asoundrc file containing:
    pcm.!default {
          type hw
          card 0
          device 3
But now, when I unplug my HDMI cable, and want to listen to music using my laptop built-in speakers/jack speakers, it doesn't work anymore, even if I restart Alsa.
In fact, I need to delete the .asoundrc file AND restart Alsa in order to get it work.
Is there a way to make both sound over HDMI, and built-in speakers works automatically depending on if my laptop is/is not connected to my TV ?
    Thanks

You need to restore the card and/or device number to those for your laptop speakers, as determined by:
    aplay -l
To do this automatically, you will need to use scripts called by udev, as described a little further down.

LET ME GET THIS STRAIGHT.I BOUGHT A TX2000 LAPTOP A YEAR AND A HALF AGO.THE THOUGHT OF IT MADE ME HAPPY SINCE THIS LAPTOP COST MUCH AND I WAS ONE OF THE FEW WHO WAS ABLE TO BUY IT.AFTER A YEAR AND 2 MONTHS,IT SUDDENLY HANGED IN THE MIDDLE OF MY WORK AND WON'T TURN ON.CONSIDERING THAT IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY,HP DID NOT GIVE A HELL OUT OF MY QUESTIONS.SO I JUST CONSIDERED THAT MAYBE BECAUSE I OVER USED IT OR WHATEVER.BUT AFTER I READ COMPLAINTS ON THE SAME MODEL,I SUDDENLY REALIZED THAT IT IS NOT MY FAULT BUT THE FAULT OF THE COMPANY.
PROBLEM:AFTER TURNING THE MACHINE ON,FAN AND LIGHTS ARE ON BUT IT NOTHING WILL APPEAR ON SCREEN.
I TRIED PLUGGING IT TO A DIFFERENT MONITOR AND STILL NOTHING.THEN I REMEMBERED THAT NO MATTER HOW COLD THE PLACE OR ROOM WHERE I WAS USING THE MACHINE,THE HEAT OF THE LAPTOP KEEPS ON INCREASING!!!
TELL ME,IS IT THE CUSTOMER'S FAULT?I,TOGETHER WITH SOME WHO I AM SURE WILL SUPPORT ME, DEMANDS A RECALL ON THIS PRODUCT SINCE AS WE CONNECT STORIES,IT OCCURS AFTER USING IT FOR A YEAR.COINCIDENCE OR INTENTION???

PRODUCT NAME:HP PAVILION TX2000 ENTERTAINMENT NOTEBOOK PC

I also have the tx2000 with nothing but problems.  If you get the blank screen here is what you need to do:
Turn the computer off and flip it over.  Blow dry through the vents on medium heat for about a minute.  Keep the blowdryer moving.  Wait a minute and then turn it back on.   The heat from blow dryer warms up the chip and it will work again.  I have to do this every once in a while with mine.  And also make sure you buy a laptop cooling fan for yours.  I have mine on continuously and it helps, although it still overheats on occasion.
Here is a class action lawsuit that was just settled:  http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-compaq/521913-nvidia-reaches-settlement-class-action-suit-affecti...
Unfortunately for some reason it doesn't look like the tx2000 is included.  I may just take them to small claims court.

  • What kind of hard drive do I need for my HP Pavilion dx6650us entertainment notebook PC?

I have a HP Pavilion dx6650us entertainment notebook PC that has the BSOD. Even when I run it in SafeMode I have absolutly NO desktop. I've tried EVERYTHING. I have lost hope. So im just going to buy a new hard drive. Does anybody have ANY idea what type of hard drive I need and aprox. how much it might cost? Please let me know(: Thank you.

It is a standard laptop 2.5 inch wide SATA hard drive like shown in this picture:
Look at Page 9 of this Manual:
    Drive Manual
This will show how to replace it. Do you have the recovery disks that you could have made when the laptop was new? If not you are going to have to get a Windows disk or some HP recovery disks.
Here is a drive that would work for you.
    160 gig 7200 rpm drive for $45
This drive will be faster than what you had and is a bit larger. A very good deal for the price. You perhaps already have a second hard drive in the system. See the manual on page 9 for the location of both hard drive bays. You could move the secondary drive (if there is one) over into the primary position without spending a nickel. In fact, that is a great idea. If you do that and still get the BSOD, then it might well be something else going on other than the hard drive. The hard drive is a likely issue but it could also be the memory and other things, too. However, I think the second drive is only found in the dx9000 models so do not be shocked if you do not have a secondary hard drive bay in your machine. I have never seen a dx6000 series but am pretty sure it is a lot like the dv6000 series of which I have seen more than my share. They have a lot of issues and I am concerned you will be spending money on a new hard drive that will not fix anything.
Feel free to post back with issues or questions.

  • Pavilion dv2700 Entertainment Notebook - broke down due to the design defect of this model

My laptop (Pavilion dv2700 Entertainment Notebook) broke down with a black screen. As far as I know, this problem is caused by the design defect of this model.
Please anyone can help me to solve this problem? Many thanks.
I contacted HP Customer Care by submitting the online questionnaire. The feedback I received from HP is that my laptop is out of warranty. I checked the links of repair/exchange or upgrading that HP provided. - They are frustrating and useless.
Both of the products and service from HP are rubbish. I will never ever buy a product from HP!!!

  • HP Pavilion tx2510us Entertainment Notebook PC

I have a HP Pavilion tx2510us Entertainment Notebook PC (original installed with Windows Vista) upgraded to Windows 7.  When I power on the machine all I get is a black scrren.  I can hear the fan, and see lites on  but the screen stays black,  I have taken all peripherals out, I have rtaken  the memory out and put it back, I have treied an alternate monitor, I have tried to get into bios.  I have also done a hard reset (took battery out, unconnected the ac power and held the power button down).  An recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hello JORDANWILL822.  I understand you're unable to get your notebook to properly boot.
This is definitely a hardware problem.  You're unable to get a picture on the internal or external monitors.  However, the notebook appears to be powering on and otherwise running.  This means that it is likely that the video card is no longer functioning properly.
I would suggest checking the cable connection first.  Here is a link to your notebook's Maintenance and Service Guide.  This covers the disassembly of the notebook and would be invaluable for checking the connection.
If the connection is secure then you likely need to have the notebook repaired.
If the notebook isn't in warranty I suggest taking it to a local computer repair shop.  This sort of problem is really best diagnosed hands-on.  Many times these shops will even diagnose the issue while you're in the store.
If the notebook is in warranty or you'd like to inquire about a repair through HP I suggest contacting support.  If you're in the US/Canada the number is 1-800-474-6836.  If you're in another part of the world you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your region's contact information.
I will keep an eye out for your next reply.  I hope you have a great day!

Surely, I have chosen the option “Continue with system resume”; however the display remained black but the laptop acted as if it was on because about 5 minutes later, the side of the laptop was warm as if it was working regularly.

  • My laptop failed to start up model hp pavilion dv2911us entertainment notebook pc.

Product model HP Pavilion dv2911us Entertainment Notebook PC
Problem: failure to start up,when I tried to perform a hard reset, the following symptoms were noticed ( LEDs glow , fan noise can be heard, the display remained black ( except for two lines of function keys information at the bottom of the screen and the computer failed to start up.
F10 key was pressed and the BIOS mode was entered. A memory test was done sucessfully but a hard drive test failed to respond.
What can I do to recover the computer without loosing my data.

You likely need a new hard drive and I would guess your old data is not accessible. Pull out the old hard drive and stop trying to access it because every time you do it lowers the already slim odds of recovering data from it. You need to attach it to another computer with a SATA to usb adapter and see if you can access the data in that manner.

  • No sound over hdmi, ION2 system

    Hi there
I'm trying to get sound output over hdmi connection without any success. I'm totally out of ideas as I tried it with openelec.tv and a xbmc live system. All the time I never heard anything. I tested with speaker-test and mplayer. I tried stuff from the guide here: http://breden.org.uk/2010/09/30/shuttle … ta-2-live/, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=157347 and also from xbmc wiki:
-different settings of asound.conf (however afaik this does not affect speaker-test -D plughw:X,Y -cN)
    -options for the snd-hda-intel module
    -unmuting
-different input channels of my receiver
    -different nvidia driver versions

What I noticed is that dmesg does not show any hdmi hotplug event, something like: "HDMI hot plug event: Pin=5 Presence_Detect=1 ELD_Valid=0"
So I thought maybe you arch linux people have some creative ideas what the problem is here?
PS: It can't be the hardware because it works with windows7.

No, does not work either... I need to help to figure out why the hotplugging and detecting of the receiver does not even work.

  • [CLOSED] sound over hdmi and optical

Ok I know sound of hdmi is a pain for everyone but I've have been all over the wiki and Google and have yet to get mine working! The weird thing is... sound works in XBMC. I got movies with 5.1 sound and 2.0 sound to work as well as music and everything else (except sound effects on menu selections but i can live with them) by setting the audio device to Optical/Coax, speaker config to 5.1, enabling DD AC3 capable and setting both audio ouput device and passthrough output device both to hdmi. However it ONLY works in XBMC. I'm trying to get some emulators working and it doesn't work in them. it doesn't work in an lxde environment either or when I run:
    speaker-test -c 6
If I can just get sound working over hdmi I would be happy, If I can get it to work over hdmi and the optical out both that would be even better (although I have a feeling that'll just make things harder).
Here's my soundcards listed  with "cat /proc/asound/modules"

    Whenever I run "speaker-test -D iec958:SB -c 6" or "speaker-test -D hdmi:Generic -c 6" I get:
    speaker-test 1.0.25
    Playback device is iec958:SB
    Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 6 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Channels count (6) not available for playbacks: Invalid argument
Setting of hwparams failed: Invalid argument
(obviously for the hdmi the playback device line reads hdmi:generic but otherwise they're the same)
I've been all over the alsa page of the wiki. When I tried the settings under https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … DIF_Output they were already correct.
To anyone who's bothered to read all this ( I sorry it's so long I'm just trying to be thorough) Thank you!
If anyone has any clue what I can try to fix this I would be forever grateful.
Edit: Well it looks like all that messing around I did last night trying to fix things only made it worse. Now the sound in XBMC doesn't work either.

    Hi!
I spent the day asking friend google, browsing the arch wiki, ubuntu wiki and xbmc wiki.
Lastly, I made it work. I have to admit that I don't know why and don't actually understand a thing of what I did, it was trial and error. However, here is what I did:
    installed alsa-oss (probably irrelevant)
set the audio output settings in xbmc to "Audio output"="Optical/Coax", "Audio output device"="Defaults" and "Passthrough output device"="hdmi".
used the following as my .asoundrc
    pcm.dmixer {
    type dmix
    slave {
    pcm "hw:0,3"
    rate 44100
    pcm.!default {
    type hw
    card 1
That's it. In case you are a sound guru willing to share your wisdom or else trying to make it work like I did, you might want some more info. Here you go.

  • [solved] no sound in HDMI

    Hi,
I have Arch linux installed in Intel NUC DC3217IYE which has only hdmi output, no jack. I get no sound from HDMI and I can not triage why. The aplay output is:
    [xan@cinezzin ~]$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    [xan@cinezzin ~]$
    Thanks in advance,

Partial progress: following this guide, I got this:
    [xan@cinezzin ~]$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
    Subdevices: 1/1

    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
    [xan@cinezzin ~]$
Then, I created the .asoundrc file:
    xan@cinezzin ~]$ cat .asoundrc
    defaults.pcm.card 0
    defaults.pcm.device 7
    defaults.ctl.card 0
    [xan@cinezzin ~]$
    and with
    speaker-test -D plughw:0,3 # for slot 1
I get sound [that is the HDMI output works]. With
    speaker-test -D plughw:0,7
    I get no sound.
But I cannot play any sound at all. If I reproduce a wav file, then I get no sound.
    Any thought.
    Thanks,
I had similar issues the first time I tried to get HDMI sound to work. The issue is that these cards come with multiple devices so alsa/pulseaudio seem to have issues determining which one is actually used, and more often than not the incorrect one ends up being the default.
From your post it is quite obvious that you are attempting to default the one device which does not work, device 7. The device you report getting sound from is the third one so naturally that's the one you want to attempt defaulting to.
In pulseaudio you can edit /etc/default.pa and add the following entry at an appropriate place:
    load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,3
Restarting pulseaudio and choosing your device from something like pavucontrol should then do the trick. You could of course find some similar method of making the change permanent using just alsa, but since I never bothered using alsa directly I will leave that part to you.

  • NVIDIA display over HDMI and ATI sound over HDMI using one mainboard

    Hello everyone,
I was curious to know if it is possible to use a setup where I use an NVIDIA card to send display over HDMI to my receiver and at the same time I use an internal ATI chip to send audio over HDMI to the same receiver.
In my setup it is a GA-MA78GM-S2H mainboard with a built in ATI HD3200 IGP and an NVIDIA 9500GT GPU and I'll be using XBMC as media centre.
The problem is there is no hardware acceleration support for the display of full-hd (1080p 24) for the ATI chip, whereas NVIDIA using  VDPAU is.
On the other hand the 9500GT doen not support audio over HDMI (unlike the newer models like GT210 or GT220), I can connect SPDIF to the NVIDIA card to allow some sort of audio over HDMI, but in that case I'll still have the bandwidth limitation associated with SPDIF.
I tried to set up a box with both NVIDIA and catalyst drivers to use the above functions, but when I try to install catalyst drivers I get a hardware conflict notice that NVIDIA and Catalyst drivers cannot be installed at the same time on the same system.
AFAIK I need the catalyst drivers (or hd-radeon) in order for also to recognize the device (?)
Anyone any information if installing both drivers is required and possible? Or are there any other methods to achieve such set up?
    TIA,
