  • [SOLVED] Openbox+Thunar, how to show usb devices in thunar?

Hi.  I've been running a pretty standard Xfce environment for a while.  When I plug in a usb drive, I get a new item pop up in the "DEVICES" section of the left panel in thunar (note, it doesn't automount the device, it just shows that it's there and only mounts it when I click on it...I like this behaviour).
Now, I'm setting up an even lighter-weight environment, just openbox and tint2 with thunar as the file manager.  But when I'm logged into the openbox environment, I don't get the item in the "DEVICES" section in thunar (but it still works fine in xfce).
If it run thunar from the command line and plug in a usb drive I get this message in the terminal
(thunar:21205): thunar-WARNING **: Failed to launch the volume manager (Failed to execute child process "thunar-volman" (No such file or directory)), make sure you have the "thunar-volman" package installed.
I don't see why I would need thunar-volman if it works fine in xfce.  If I install thunar-volman and do the same, I get this message
    thunar-volman: Unsupported USB device type.
    thunar-volman: Unsupported USB device type.
    thunar-volman: Unknown block device type.
So I'm wondering if maybe there is a daemon that is autostarted during an xfce session that makes thunar probe for devices to be plugged in or something like that.  Why does it work in an xfce session, but not in an openbox session?

    Thanks for your replies.
henk:  I tried installing polkit-gnome and creating the rule as per the wiki, but it didn't work.  Volume detection seems to work fine in xfce without this package.
jv2112:  I added udiskie to .config/openbox/autostart and it seems to work.  I've had problems with udiskie in the past; it seemed to have some trouble unmounting the drives properly after a write as I would find that the newly written files were corrupt.  But it seems to be working fine.
I'll mark this as solved, but I'm still curious as to how xfce-thunar is mounting the usb devices.
One clue is that with udiskie, devices get mounted to /media, whereas in xfce they get mounted to /var/run/media/username/ (or something like that).

  • [SOLVED]Incorrect thunar folder icons

Hello I've been using the Area Blue icon theme for a few days but after a reboot yesterday the folder icons are GNOME icons. All the other icons are unaffected. I've tried deleting and re-downloading the icons but the folder icons just won't work. Any ideas?
    Edit:
this is only happening in thunar all other programs and unaffected. PCmanFM works too

No I was saying that since I was setting up everything(themes, compositing, etc..) today I may have changed something that after the reboot caused the icons to "disappear".
Also it is only in thunar that the folder icons are missing.
I've tried searching around but I haven't seen anything so far, but I may have missed somthing
"Having the icon pack in /usr/share/icons (not "/usr/share/themes") makes it available system-wide, for other users as well."
Thank you that's what I meant.

  • [SOLVED] OpenBox - Transparency and Virtual Desktop Switcher

    Hi All
I've just recently, in the last 2 days, switched from Gnome 3.2 to Openbox. I've never really used it before except for a short period on #! as I recall. I've a couple of problems I don't seem to be able to find any answers to and hopefully someone on here already knows how:
    1) I'm using Guake dropdown terminal - I don't mind switching to any other terminal if necessary. I can't get transparency to work correctly with it though. I've installed the following to try to resolve the issue:
    Cairo Composite Manager
    transset-df
    If I issue the command:
    transset-df -n 'Guake!' &
the Guake terminal sets to transparent which is great. However, as soon as the window retracts and I call it back again the transparency has switched off.
    2) I've installed tint2 and it's pretty good. Problem is I can't find a way to get a virtual desktop switcher. Again, this choice isn't cast in stone, I'm quite happy to change to any other application, or set of applications, to achieve the following:
Virtual Desktop Switcher - i like the way pypanel does this actually. I'm happy enough with the mouse wheel switching desktops but I'd like some indication of which desktop I'm on.
Date and Time with a calendar - I've got Orca working quite well on a click on the clock for the calendar.
I would have thought this was pretty simple to resolve really, it's just that i don't know Openbox that well yet and I could use some advice on the best way to resolve the issues.
    Thanks in advance
    Rich

I've actually managed to resolve the transparency issue as well.
sudo pacman -S devilspie xcompmgr transset-df
    Then in .config/openbox/autostart:
    # Start Composite Manager
    xcompmgr &
    # Start Devilspie to alter windows
    devilspie -a &
    # Start Main Panel
    tint2 &
Finally, create a file in .devilspie called guake.ds with the following content:
    (if
    (is (window_name) "guake.py" )
    (begin
    (spawn_sync (str "transset-df -i " (window_xid) " 0.5") )

  • [solved]Openbox margins and Conky

I have a 1 line conky that i want to remain at the top of my screen at all times. I set up a margin in openbox to leave enough pixels at the top to comfortably fit the conky. The problem is that when i first boot to my desktop conky is placed below the margin. If i restart X however conky is right where i want it in the margin. Does anyone know how to put conky in the right place the first time?
.conkyrc is setup for top_left placement and theres only a few pixels on the y axis from the top.
I call conky from .xinitrc  before openbox
I can't think of any other relevant info but let me know!

I hope you guys could help me with the following problem.

    Thanks for posts!
I have done all the steps, but real key was to reboot the system! Even pkill X didn't work. It's now solved.
To give users with the same issue a solution:
    - Set icon-theme with lxappearance
    - Be sure that gtk3.0/settings.ini has fallback and icon-theme the same value (not know if it really needed)
    - Reboot! pkill X didn't work for me.
    Thanks again.

  • Thunar and folder icons

I would like to folder icons look like the screenshot of the Faenza-Cupertino for this: http://gnome-look.org/CONTENT/content-pre1/129008-1.png
Can I achieve this in thunar? How to assign icons for Dropbox, Folder bookmarks, Folder recent, Folder search, and other which is not here, and icons are Faenza-Cupertino.
Run xdg-user-dirs-update and configure the .config/user-dirs.dirs file did not help. How can this be done?

Unfortunately, Xfce doesn't support different icons for different folders. The only exceptions are your home folder and desktop folder, as these are the only ones required by Xfce.
As an alternative, you can set emblem icon overlays through the folder's properties dialog.
You can add/change/remove emblem icons in the emblem folder of your chosen icon theme.
    Cheers.

  • [SOLVED] Thumbnail view of image files in Thunar and PCManFM

    Hello all!
I have a question about the way Thunar and PCManFM handles thumbnails of image files. I understand that Thunar users can use the thunar-thumbnailers package to get previews of all sorts of different file formats. But on the thumbnailers page it is claimed that Thunar should be able to make thumbnails of JPEG's, PDF's etc. without this add-on. This is not happening for me even though I have evince, ImageMagick etc. installed.
Now, I tried to install PCManFM again after some time, since this used to be my fm-of-choice. And here, thumbnails show up for JPEG's, PDF's and what-else right away. So I opened Thunar again and browsed to the same folders I had visited with PCManFM, and this time Thunar gave me thumbnails as well!! But only for the files in folders I had visited with PCManFM
Is this expected behaviour? Is it a bug in Thunar? I want to keep using Thunar (I think), but I would also like this thumbnailing business to work automagically as it does in PCManFM. So I'm just wondering if I should report this to the Thunar folks, since they seem to claim that it should work without the -thumbnailers add-on, or if I should just install the -thumbnailers package and shut up ^^
    Cheers

Thank you! I installed tumbler and got thumbnails right away. This seems like the proper way to do it.

  • [solved] Problem adding menu icon to pypanel

Hello, I'm moving into a new place and I'm putting my desktop in the living room as a community media center since neither me or my roommates own a TV, and I'm the only one with a working desktop. They're used to Windows and a start menu. I'm running Openbox + pypanel and thought I'd make their transition a little easier by adding a start menu icon to pypanel. I followed the instructions here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=68177 but it isn't working. Everytime I click on the arch icon I just get this in my terminal:
    Error: Invalid key sequence 'C-m'
Failure converting key sequence 'C-m' to keycodes
    Error: Invalid key sequence 'C-m'
Failure converting key sequence 'C-m' to keycodes
xdo_keysequence reported an error for string 'C-m'
here is the important part of my pypanelrc config:
    ("xdotool key C-m", "/home/neruson/.icons/archlinux/icons/archllinuxiconcrystal128.png"),
In obkey my key is Ctrl+M and the key text is C-m, anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
    EDIT:
I should also add I've tried this with the key as SUPER+Space too with the same error.
    EDIT 2:
Nevermind, solved. I'm just stupid and can't follow directions well... ctrl+m instead of C-m... duh

Thanks for the heads up on the scripts.
~/.bash_profile has me annoyed though. It's as if it is not being executed. Will have to try adding something with a visible effect to confirm.
My ~/.bash_profile is owned by me and is executable but it simply will not add the path to the variable.
Could it be something to do with the way my session is handled?
I am currently launching my session through GDM via inittab. I know when a session is launched this way, for example, ~/.xinitrc is ignored. Perhaps this is the same for ~/.bash_profile?
Regarding ~/.bashrc, it does work this way, but it only adds the path when a terminal is launched. I need the path added regardless of a terminal being opened or not.
    Cheers.

  • [solved] openbox: "ghost" window with bbpager

I don't really know where to report this bug as it was working fine a few days ago, so I'm just going to check if I'm the only one having problems with bbpager.
Basically, when I'm using bbpager outside of the dock/slit, everything's fine.
But when using bbpager -w, if I close everything, the last window still appears in the pager:
impossible to move it, but it's still there.
Once I open a new window, everything's working again, the "ghost" window dissapear.
Strange thing is, if I run a 2nd instance of bbpager without the "withdrawn" option, the one in the dock behaves correctly: the docked bbpager stop drawing the remaining window.
I tried with the default config files for both openbox and bbpager with no luck.
Problem is I have no idea how to check what's wrong with it, and unable to find another pager with autohiding feature (which is why I put bbpager in the dock).
Does someone has the same issue, or any idea of what I could do to solve this problem?
    Thanks!
    This is unrelated and solved:
    Edit:
    Just realised something else:
I'm using "windows" + Tab as a "Super alt-Tab", ie switching between tasks on all desktops, and not just the current one.
If I'm on a desktop with no window open, no problem, I just choose the window I want and I'm transfered to the correct desktop.
Problem is once the window gets focus, windows tab isn't working anymore: I can choose another window (I see the icons, can move between them, see the border...), but I'm not transfered to it.
    It doesn't do a thing.
But if I do "show desktop" first, no problem, it's working again...
Edit2: AAAAaaaAAARRGGH! downgraded to openbox 3.4.7 fixed the "windows + Tab" issue, but not the bbpager one!!!
    I'm completely clueless.
    Edit3:
    Just reinstalled openbox 4.3.8.
Did it with Pacman -Rns openbox + rm -r ~/.config/openbox, then pacman -S + cp /etc/xdg/openbox ~/.config , just to be sure.
Same issue with "windows tab", but... It's working with firefox, I don't know why!
I can switch between different firefox windows, even if they're on different desktops!
Last edited by Tekrotzen (2009-12-12 12:07:24)

Solved the openbox issues: installing openbox-git and modifying the new default rc.xml manually (don't use obkey as it's not working well with openbox 4.3.8), everything is working as expected.
Still, I still have the bbpager issue...
    Edit:hmmm.
No idea why, but after a pacman -Scc and a new install of bbpager, no ghost window anymore...
    Solved.

  • Photoshop CS6 Menus and Icons too small on Windows 8.1 with 4K UHD display

    Hello,
So I have seen that I am not the first one to ask this question, but I have yet to find any true resolutions.  I recently bought anew laptop, a Lenovo with a 4K UHD display which I already love for so many things.  But, like a few other programs, the high resolution means the icons and menu text of PS CS6 are incredibly small, which may be alright on a TV, but on a laptop screen, it make it incredibly difficult to work.  I have tried all sorts of different approaches in Windows, such as changing the OS font sizes and icon sizes, which do indeed change everything else on the computer, but PS is still the same tiny size.  I have also increased the text size under the interface preferences to large, but with little real change.  I understand why this is happening, but I am hoping that there is some sort of workaround, beyond just bumping down my screen resolution, which defeats the whole purpose of using UHD to edit photos.  I have heard rumors of being able to code in some UI changes manually, but have found no concrete examples of how to actually do that.
I am sure that it would not take Adobe too much time and effort to create an update to help with scaling, but they are very set on pushing forward with Creative Clound, leaving the rest of us loyal customers to the dust until we pay up.  If anyone has found any resolutions or workarounds, I'd really appreciate it.  Thank you.

Well other than that, I can't offer anything else as a forum volunteer. I have no idea if anything, what Adobe plans to do for CS6.
I do know that Photoshop CC 2014 has a 200% ui feature for Windows and you might like the Photography Plan which for $10 monthly includes Photoshop CC 2014 and Lightroom for $10/month.
You can trial CC 2014 to see if it does solve your situation

Edit: I tried switching to bash in a tty and then just startx but that doesn't help either.
Edit2: To be clear openbox does load a desktop. The autostart scripts at ~/.config/openbox/ just don't run. Thanks.
Edit3: I decided to run the command issued in openbox-session and added --debug to it. Here is the output of "xinit /usr/bin/openbox --debug --startup "/usr/lib/openbox/openbox-autostart OPENBOX" "$@" -- :1 -nolisten tcp" :

Well, since it worked fine even when called indirectly through openbox-autostart and since it's worked fine for months I figured it was fine. I am happy to post it though. Here you go:

Stuff that needs sudo is in my sudoers as "username hostname NOPASSWD: item1,item2,etc,etc". Nothing too exciting. Seems like if there was suddenly something wrong with my autostart file at least some of the stuff would run either way though cause of "&". Pretty puzzling this issue is.

  • Windows and icons are black, menu items are not showing correctly

    Hello!
Well just doing my normal routine today browsing the Internet, watching videos on vlc, my computer suddenly started to glitch. Icons were disappearing, Safari turned black.
So i did a restart but the problem is still there. I cant even choose the user properly because the avatars are not there it's just all dark gray. Remembering where my user avatar is, i do a click and type in my password and I do and able to get in to my system but all windows menu items and icons are black.
Basically what I'm saying is the system seems to be working fine except for that I can't see the icons and windows properly displayed.
I've already tried to reinstall of Mavericks hoping that it's a software thing. You guys think it's a problem with the graphic processor?
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated thank you.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as certain other aspects of the configuration that may have a bearing on the problem. Don’t be alarmed by the apparent complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode, if possible. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing. If you can only boot in safe mode, you can still use this procedure, but not all of it will work. Be sure to mention that in your reply, if you haven't already done so.
Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. The commands are safe and do nothing but produce human-readable text output, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. I am not asking you to trust me. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    { echo "Loaded kernel extensions:"; kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'; echo $'\n'"Loaded user agents:"; launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'; echo $'\n'"Inserted libraries:"; launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo $'\n'"User cron tasks:"; crontab -l; echo $'\n'"System launchd configuration:"; cat /e*/lau*; echo $'\n'"User launchd configuration:"; cat .lau*; echo $'\n'"Login items:"; osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | sed $'s/, /\\\n/g'; echo $'\n'"Safari extensions:"; /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c Print L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist | awk -F'= ' '/Bundl/{print $2}' | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; printf "\nRestricted user files: %s\n" $(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); echo $'\n'"Extrinsic loadable bundles:"; cd; find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist" | egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|print|SoftRAID" && echo ${d%/Contents}; done; echo $'\n'"Unsigned shared libraries:"; find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b $1 | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v $1' {} {} \; -print; echo; ls -A {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}* L*/Fonts; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A TextEdit window will open with the output. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    { echo "Loaded system agents:"; sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo $'\n'"Login hook:"; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo $'\n'"Root cron tasks:"; sudo crontab -l; echo $'\n'"Log check:"; syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    You can then quit Terminal.
To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output as text, not as a screenshot.
Please post the contents of the TextEdit window, not the Terminal window.

  • Changing default picture viewer via GPO without changing image type and icon (Windows 7)

    Hello,
I am trying to change the default picture viewer for some file extensions (.bmp, .jpeg, .png and .tiff). Actually Windows Photo Viewer is the default viewer and we need to replace it with Microsoft Office Picture Manager.
I managed to do that change via GPO using the 'open with' preference under User Configuration\ Preferences\Control Panel Settings\Folder Options. So now the files are opened with Microsoft Office Picture Manager (office 2010). The problem is that the image
type became 'OIS.EXE' for all the specified file extensions. Moreover the icon is now the same (Microsoft Office 2010).
When I change manually the associated program for a file extension, the icon change but no the image type... this is different using GPO.
Is there a solution in order to change the default program but keeping the image type and associated icon ?
I tried to do that modification using the 'new file type' preference under Computer Configuration\Preferences\Control Panel Settings\Folder Options. I specified the 'open' action for OIS.exe, selected file extension BMP with associated class 'Bitmap Image'.
It solves the problem for image type, Microsoft Office Picture Manager opens the files ... but I have to specify the icon file path and icon index and I don't know where I can find the default icons for the file extensions ...
What is the best solution ? Am I right ? Am I doing something wrong ?
    Thank you in advance !

    Hello,
thank you very much for your answers.
For the rollback, I will reimport the original/default keys for all the image types, this should be ok.
Here are the problems I have trying to pu Microsoft Office Picture Manager as default picture viewer (I just want  .bmp, .jpg ... files to be opened with Microsoft Office Picture Manager by default).
1 Using new file type under Computer Configuration\Preferences\Control Panel Settings\folder options. : I define a new file type (BMP for example), associated class Bitmap Image, I configure the icon (imageres.dll,65) and an open action where OIS.EXE
is the application used to perform the action.
Result : Icon is correct, file type is correct, image files are opened with OIS.EXE (correct) ... BUT now Microsoft Office 2010 appears twice in open or open with menu
2 Using new open with under User configuration\Preferences\Control Panel Settings\Folder Options : new open with preference, action (update or replace same result), file extension BMP, associated program (path to OIS.EXE), i check set as default.
Result : Office 2010 opens image files (correct) but icon is Office 2010 one and the file type is now 'OIS.EXE' for all image file extensions I have specified ... so it won't be possible to sort the file by image type if I select that method...
3 Using ftype : OIS.EXE doesn't open the file when I double click on it but Microsoft Office 2010 appears twice in the open or open with list ...
I am a bit lost ... what is the best method to put Microsoft Office Picture Manager as default picture viewer, keeping the image type (Bitmap image, JPEG image etc) and without having Microsoft Office 2010 twice in the open or open with list ??
Last question : by default an image file is opened and previewed with Windows Photo viewer and edited with Paint. I would like just to open images with Office 2010 but keep Windows Photo viewer for preview and Paint for edit ... Is it possible ??
Thank you in advance for any help and support !!
