[SOLVED] Pacman is broken on fresh installation

I've just performed a fresh installation that seemed to go fine, following the Official Arch Linux Install Guide.  However, I get the following during my first login:
Arch Linux 2.6.39-ARCH (myhost) (tty1)
myhost login: root
Password:
[root@myhost ~]# pacman -Sy
:: Synchronizing package databases...
error: local database version is too old
error: failed to init transaction (database is incorrect version)
try running pacman-db-upgrade
error: transaction already initiated
[root@myhost ~]#
I realize the error recommends that I run pacman-db-upgrade, but it seems very out-of-the-ordinary to encounter this error after having installed fresh with all default options.  Could someone give me a hand?

benash wrote:Thanks.  I appreciate the responses.  I ran pacman-db-upgrade, and that appeared to fix the problem.  I'm now having some trouble downloading packages (1 out of 10 seems to be failing), but I just found the documentation on selecting appropriate mirrors.
What exactly do you mean by "failing"? Please post the errors you get.
But first, grab a fresh mirrorlist http://www.archlinux.org/mirrorlist/ and try to update again.
I agree with picking an updated mirror. If packages are "failing," then the mirrors may be out of sync. Also, the list of mirrors included on the ISO CD may be out of date.

  • [SOLVED] Help required to boot fresh installation. New to GPT.

    Hi all,
I have been using Gnu/Linux since 1998 and Arch since 2007.
I stopped playing the pacman gamble game and had left my system for a few months between updates.  I reached a state where I thought it was easier to reinstall and decided to back up my home dir and simplify my partitions back to a single / and just /tmp, /var and /home on separate drives.  Also it seemed a good time to switch to GPT and use Syslinux boot loader.
I have followed the Official and Beginner's Installation instructions but cannot boot into my newly installed system.  I have used /dev/ designations and UUID designations in my syslinux.cfg but when I try to boot into the new system I either get errors saying my root is a raid member or there is no /sbin/init found.
I have then tried repartitioning using standard MBR partitions but get Missing OS errors.  Is there a simple path I should follow?
I am using the following drives......
    /dev/sdb        Kingston 30GB SSD
    /dev/sdb1      /
    /dev/sda        Western Digital 160GB
    /dev/sda1      /tmp
    /dev/sda2      /var
    /dev/sda3      SWAP
    /dev/sda4      /home
    /dev/sdc        Seagate 2TB
    /dev/sdc1      RAID Member
    /dev/sdd        Western Digital 2TB
    /dev/sdd1      RAID Member
    /dev/sde        Western Digital 1TB
    /dev/sde1      RAID Member
    /dev/sdf         Samsung 1TB
    /dev/sdf1       RAID Member
I have installed Mint 14 and Neptune 3 on the same drives with no issues but I want to keep using Arch.  I am at a loss for what to do next.
I am considering removing all drives except the 30GB SSD and the 160GB /tmp,/var,SWAP,/home drive and trying again.
Can any one hold my hand through this..... please?!  I really do not want to drop Arch as it is for me *the* Linux distro.
Honestly though I would appreciate any help.  I am going slightly mad!
    Diesel1.
I apologise now for any lack of info but it is late and I need sleep.

Looking into your hd setup, i would recommend: GPT + SYSLINUX

You say you already tried this setup and couldn't boot it, but it is as easy as it gets. I must say that arch is a "do it yourself distro", so we are not supposed to hold your hand. BUT, we can help you understand what you did wrong, if you missed something, etc.
If you are able to, you can post the steps you made in your attempt to install arch, and then someone will help you with that!
REMEMBER, you should always read the wikis and search the forum to see if anyone gets the same errors as you before posting.
Thanks for the reply.  It is kind of you to 'help me understand' what I did wrong!
I tried again with a different partition set-up and re-read the wikis thoroughly.  This time it has worked and I am now booted into my GPT+SYSLINUX Arch system.
From what I can see I needed a separate /boot partition on the same disk (30GB SSD) as the / partition. D'oh! It is the simple things that seem to trip me up.
    Anyhow, thanks again,

  • [SOLVED] Several problems after fresh installation

    Hi guys,
i just did a fresh installation of arch and every times i must do something i get this error:
cannot remove, read, edit and etc : read-only file system
So i searched for a workaround.. but i must do this after every boot
    This is it:
    mount -oremount,rw /
There's a way to fix this forever?
Often when i need to edit some files, like /etc/pacman.conf or xorg config file, arch tell me: You do not have write permission to modify... that file
Searched another workaround.. and also this i must do every time after each boot:
sudo chown -R black /directory of file that i'm trying to edit/
I hope to fix this annoying problems, with your help.
    Thanks guys,
    Gabriele.

    Ok guys,
think solved by change my /sda6/ (root) by /mnt to / and adding a slash / before home, boot, var.
Rebooted and try to edit the same file /etc/fstab and no warnings
    Now is like this:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir>     <type>     <options>                <dump>    <pass>
    tmpfs                    /tmp        tmps        nodev,nosuid             0                0
    #UUID=blablablabla
    /dev/sda6                  /             ext4                  rw,relatime           0   1
    #UUID=blablabla
    /dev/sda9                  /home            ext4                 rw,relatime            0   2
    #UUID=blablabla
    /dev/sda5                  /boot              ext2                 rw,relatime             0   2

  • [SOLVED] Cannot install packages during a fresh installation

    Hi all,
I'm pretty sure I'm missing something from the wiki/forums, but I'm at a loss here...
I am going through a fresh installation of Arch. I am using AIF and stopped at step 4 "Prepare hard drive(s)". I intend to install on btrfs, so I went to a different console via ALT-F2, logged in as root and tried installing gptfdisk via "pacman -S gptfdisk". I got  a few errors such as:
    - error: could not open file /var/lib/pacman/sync/core.db: Failed to open '/var lib/pacman/sync/core.db'
(the rest of the errors pertain to the other available repositories)
I made sure to choose core and extras in AIF's step 1: "Select source".
What completely obvious thing am I missing here...?
    Thanks.

  • Fresh Installation Boot Errors

I'm new to trying to work with Solaris 10, and to a lot of Solaris in general, so while I'd normally be happy to do a lot of reading (and have tried searching for answers on google a good deal already), I'm having a problem after a fresh installation of Solaris 10 on a Sparc T3-1 server that I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction to solve.
During the install I told the text installer I wanted to do a ZFS installation using both of my disks (only 2) in a mirrored configuration. I selected the default set of core system packages.
After the install seemed to be done and the system rebooted, I'm getting the following when it comes up:

I'm happy to provide any other details if there are questions.

Any time i try to access something for the first time, it would take almost 10 mins for it to open, be it files, file explorer, web browser, media file or any installed app or program. Once it opened if i tried accessing a second time, it didnt take long. I installed the lenovo solution centre and did a hardware scan to see if there is an issue with the hard disk or RAM or any other hardware. The scan came out clean with all the hardware tests passed.
I made a recovery disk and then reset the pc to get s fresh installation of the windows. I reset the system from PC settings. After getting a fresh installation when the problem persisted i reset the pc using the recovery disk. The recovery process took 30 hours to finish but that didnt solve the problem. When i tried to reset again it said that there is a partition error and partition could not be found. So i cleaned the hard drive using diskpart, made a primary partition and the. N formatted the HDD. When i tried to install windows 8 using recovery usb it says that it cant find active partition. So then i installed a copy of windows 7 which was very slow and took almost 3 hours to install. After installing windows 7 my laptop is still running very slow and it takes at least 5 minutes for me to access any file or to even right click and refresh the desktop.
How do i resolve this issue and how can i get a clean installation of the pre loaded windows 8 which i am not able to install from the recovery disk. In the beginning there was one drive of 1TB on which i created more partition to get 1 drive of 450 GB and another 200 GB using the default windows disk manager. Could this have led to the issue of the Laptop slowing down?

  • Root device cannot be found after fresh installation

I just made a fresh installation on my lenovo y500. Everything went well. I rebooted (without the usb), and I get the error:
"ERROR: device '/dev/sdc2' not found. Skipping fsck.
Error: Unable to find root device '/dev/sdc2"
I figured I must have goofed somewhere in the installation process, so I thought I'd just boot back into my live USB and start all over, but now the USB is not being detected whatsoever.
When I open my BIOS, I can't change my boot priorities to USB because the option isn't even present anymore. It's as if the USB isn't recognized.
When I try to boot into my (apparently broken) arch installation, I get dropped to a recovery shell after the error. Is there anything I can do in this?
I don't want to make a whole other LiveUSB because the only machines I have left to make it are windows. And I'm windows retarded...
I have already done the following:
    1. Ensured that secure boot is disabled
    2. Enabled USB Boot (However it doesn't show up in my bootable devices. Only see HDD Device and Linux Boot Manager. Both bring me to the same error)
    3. Moved my USB stick to different ports. Still not able to be detected as a bootable device
    4. Booted into recovery mode. It brings me to the same error.
Would switching my boot mode to legacy help at all? I'd rather not even try because I just don't even see how it could help.root device not found arch post installatin
This is not a dual installation. It's a clean installation because I didn't want any silly boot errors (just my luck, I guess).
Gummiboot was my chosen bootloader during installation. I only had 2 partitions made a root partition 'sdc2' and the efi partition 'sdc1' which was formatted and created with the ef00 esp code
No notable errors arose during installation and I unmounted everything before I rebooted. I am truly at my wit's end...

lknows wrote:2. /dev/sdc was the planned installation location (if that's what you're asking) When I booted into the live usb, the usb was named sda, and the command [ fdisk -l ] didn't reveal any sdb location at all.
No wonder your bootloader's not finding anything. /dev/sdc was the right installation point when you were running the LiveUSB, but it isn't the right mount point when actually booting from the machine.
Find the bootloader settings of the actual installation (inside the /boot folder) and change the /dev/sdc to either /dev/sdb or /dev/sda and then try booting in again (I suggest /dev/sdb first).
I use UUIDs with GRUB, and you can probably do something similar with gummboot. I do it so I avoid being unable to boot when my internal hard disk (I only have one) isn't recognised as /dev/sda.

To move a home folder, create a new home folder, copy the contents of the old home folder into the new home folder, and then delete the old home folder.  Take a look at this link, http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/UserMgmt_v10.6.pdf

  • Oracle 10g RMAN is not working in RHEL 4 after fresh installation

I downloaded Oracle 10g R2 from OTN at home for self study.
I have problem with the RMAN after fresh installation Oracle 10g in RedHat Enterprise Linux AS 4. (x86)
Everything seems works fine, database mounted including EM, SQLPlus, iSQLPlus etc.
But when I attempt to execute RMAN command on the terminal, nothing is happening. No RMAN prompt, No error message!
I ran the "relink all" command but no helps.
    Please advice.

I guess you are a common Linux 'victim', you don't invoke Oracle's rman, but a Linux executable:
    http://linux.about.com/cs/linux101/g/rman.htm
Check your PATH variable, you may move $ORACLE_HOME/bin to the top.

Do you have any clue? Have several issues on a new MacBookPro but it's propably "PEBKAC" made..
    Uffe

It is Command+r or for the online internet system it is Command+option/Alt+r keys. Then you use Disk Utility to erase the macintosh partition, from the built in recovery hd, or you can repartition the drive as one partition from the online system.
To actually get to the online internet system you have to hold that key combo down until you see a globe on the screen. Otherwise it will just boot from the built in recovery hd on the internal drive.

  • ORA-27102 IN FRESH INSTALLATION

    Hi Forum
I have a problem with the fresh installation my environment is:
Solaris10 and Oracle DB10g R2 and the box have 4Gb RAM
The installation can`t continue and stop in the Database creation 2% with the error message ora-27102, the manual quick installation say:
    ==========================================================
On Solaris 10, use the following procedure to view the current value specified for resource controls, and to change them if necessary:
To view the current values of the resource control, enter the following commands:
    # id -p // to verify the project id
    uid=0(root) gid=0(root) projid=1 (user.root)
    # prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project user.root
    # prctl -n project.max-sem-ids -i project user.root
If you must change any of the current values, then:
To modify the value of max-shm-memory to 6 GB:
    # prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -v 6gb -r -i project user.root
    ==================================================
But when I change the shm-memory and reboot the box, the value is the same default 998MB.
Please could anybody help me to resolve this problem
    Thanks and regards,
    Wilson

Please, could anybody know about this issue??

EHP5 installation comes with Central application component i.e. SAP_APPL and EA-APPL on 605 version. Its different from EHP4 installation where all ERP components comes on 600 release.
