Solved printer installation problem – "error-user-request-value-too-long"

A discussion in July 2006 left the problem of printer installation unsolved. My contacts with Apple Support have also led to frustration for everyone.
Whenever I have tried to install any printer I end up with the error message:
"error-user-request-value-too-long".
Luckily I discovered the shareware program "Printer set up repair" on Versiontracker. It worked wonders in 5 minutes. Now everything is fully functioning. It also provides an extremely useful log-file telling you which (often hidden) files that are missing or damaged.

Phew!

Well, I tried all of that and I'm still getting the error message. I've also repaired disk permissions and run Disk Warrior. When I repaired disk permissions, many HP printer items showed up in the list.

  • USB Printing - client-error-request-value-too-long

A little while back, my iSight suddenly stopped working and so I did a full format and reinstall to 'fix' the problem. The problem wasn't 'fixed' through this action. Instead, I had to disconnect power and let the computer sit there for a bit and think about what it had done (naughty iMac). Anyway... Another USB-related problem just popped up - this time with my printer.
The printer is a Canon IP4000 and I just installed the latest drivers to try to fix this error. The first error was something about not being able to write to the device. I thought that was stupid and would probably be fixed by deleting the printer and then reinstalling it. I have so far 'uninstalled' the printer (more or less just removed it from the printers list in the printer utility) and now I can't re-add it to the list to install it. The error reads as follows:
An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer.
    client-error-request-value-too-long
I have tried Google but I just don't have the time to sort through all kinds of explainations on how CUPS works on Linux (apparently, this error is related to CUPS in some way). I also tried searching the forum for the error message but found nothing. So here I am again asking for some help from those who might have seen this problem before.
This is on a fresh install and I have tried it on newly created users to no avail.
    Thanks for any help! -Thomas

I've recently had this error which came up because the spool folder was missing. In the terminal:
    sudo mkdir /private/var/spool
    sudo mkdir /private/var/spool/cups
puts the proper folders in their place. Repair permissions afterwards.
Through the cups web interface, the error is "Request entity too large"
Panther has the same folders, but a different error comes up.
The above cups folder has different permissions than the default. Probably the same for Tiger and Panther but just to be safe, repair permissions.

  • Error: "client-error-request-value-too-long" when trying to add printer

After installing the 10.4.9 Combo update, my HP 1350 All-in-One printer was not recognized. I reinstalled the driver, but now I can't add the printer. I get the error message "client-error-request-value-too-long" when trying to add the printer. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem.

  • Client-error-request-value-too-long

What is this error???? I am trying to add an Epson 1280 printer and I get this error. I have the most current driver and not sure why this isn't working.

My flatmate had this "client-error-request-value-too-long" problem with her (powerpc) powerbook. Nearly everything I tried didn't work:
    1) Reinstalling drivers
    2) Permissions repair
    3) Resetting print system using Fixamac's Printer Setup Repair Utility
    4) Updating from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11
    5) Using the command line to try and recreate the directory: /var/spool/cups/tmp (which told me it already existed)
    6) Using Transmit (with show invisible files turned on) to browse to /var/spool/cups/ and try and recreate the tmp folder
On the last point I couldn't change anything about the /var/spool/cups/ directory because the permissions were corrupted in some way. It keep telling me tmp already existed but I couldn't see it.
In the end what did work was enabling and logging in as root, browsing to /var/spool/ using Transmit and deleting the cups folder and then recreating. It took a few tries to delete too, but in the end I managed to remove it.
Of course I wouldn't actually recommend this. I'm no Unix geek so god knows what I might have broken in the process, so I'm going to reinstall her system with the Archive and Install options when I get a chance, which is what I'd recommend doing in the first place to anyone having this problem.

I have Google'd client-error-request-value-too-long, and found it is a common CUPS issue on Linux. The popular solutions (having /var/spool/cups and /var/spool/cups/tmp) are already in place. Also, the temp files are nowhere near 2 GB (44MB).
Has anyone had this issue with BI Publisher on Linux?

Thanks for the link. It looks like the sysadmins have throttled cups to low to allow large bitmapped print jobs:
    grep MaxRequestSize cupsd.conf
    # MaxRequestSize: controls the maximum size of HTTP requests and print files.
    MaxRequestSize 10M
I am trying to get a more reasonable size limit.

The linux sysadmins set the cups max_request_size at 10 MB, which was causing this error. Once the restriction was lifted, the reports ran without error.

  • Can't add printer: "request-value-too-long"

When I try to add a printer that appears in Print Browser (HP Laserjet 6MP) to the Printer List, I get the error message shown in subject line.
I've installed the most recent HP driver (before realizing it may not have been necessary since the driver's included in the Mac OS). Note: this printer DID work prior to a system reinstall, using earlier HP utility that worked in the Classic environment.
I deleted the earlier HP ppd's and driver, tho not the most current HP driver and ppds.
    I repaired permissions.
I also "Reset Printing System" in the Printer Setup Utility, to no avail. Still get error message.
Printer works (test page). Computer DOES communicate with printer when I try to add it (Apple Talk; LED's light up briefly). But then the infernal message appears.
I have spent hours trying to scope this out. Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    HI Bruce,
The Mac connects to the printer via the Ethernet bridge (Asante Talk). Weird thing is that is worked fine prior to updating the driver. I would like to restore this, but other comments are suggesting that it's going to remain problematic.
So another respondent has suggested going with the HP JetDirect, a print server. The virtue there (assuming I get it to work) is that I can get my PC laptop to feed the same printer, connected to the network via a wireless router.
This is new to me so I expect it may be tricky to make it all work.
Thanks for you help. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome. Happy New Year.

  • Inserted value too long ...

    Hi,
I tried to migrate a VARCHAR2 (2000) column into an other VARCHAR2 (2000) column in an other database.
I get the error message "Inserted value too long ..."
    length (source) = 1998
The target database has a Unicode character set.
    Could you help me?

    Hi,
If your initial database is non-unicode and your target in unicode, your length 1998 cannot insert into varchar2(2000). If I well remember, there is a ratio for size from non-unicode to unicode : x3. That's why Oracle cannot insert 1998 from non-unicode to varchar2(2000) into unicode.

Well I've just downloaded the latest iTunes with Quicktime 7.0.3 but am having a **** of a time getting the latter installed. iTunes will install, but then gives me a -3 error when trying to install Quicktime. So I tried downloading and installing the standalone Quicktime 7.0.3 program, but am having no more joy with that. If I try that, I get the error message:
Error 1606.Could not access network location QTComponents\
If I click ok then I get:
Error: -1603 Fatal error during installation
I've tried using the Installshield support website to help me, but with absolutely no luck whatsoever (http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q110724). If anyone can advise me here it would be greatly appreaciated. Many thanks in advance. I have also tried disabling my Avast antivirus while I install, but to no avail.
Many thanks to anyone out there who might be able to help me.

  • SQL Error: ORA-12899: value too large for column

    Hi,
I'm trying to understand the above error. It occurs when we are migrating data from one oracle database to another:
    Error report:
SQL Error: ORA-12899: value too large for column "USER_XYZ"."TAB_XYZ"."COL_XYZ" (actual: 10, maximum: 8)
    12899. 00000 - "value too large for column %s (actual: %s, maximum: %s)"
*Cause:    An attempt was made to insert or update a column with a value
which is too wide for the width of the destination column.
The name of the column is given, along with the actual width
of the value, and the maximum allowed width of the column.
Note that widths are reported in characters if character length
semantics are in effect for the column, otherwise widths are
    reported in bytes.
*Action:   Examine the SQL statement for correctness.  Check source
    and destination column data types.
Either make the destination column wider, or use a subset
of the source column (i.e. use substring).
The source database runs - Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.7.0 - 64bit Production
The target database runs - Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production
The source and target table are identical and the column definitions are exactly the same. The column we get the error on is of CHAR(8). To migrate the data we use either a dblink or oracle datapump, both result in the same error. The data in the column is a fixed length string of 8 characters.
To resolve the error the column "COL_XYZ" gets widened by:
    alter table TAB_XYZ modify (COL_XYZ varchar2(10));
    -alter table TAB_XYZ succeeded.
We now move the data from the source into the target table without problem and then run:
    select max(length(COL_XYZ)) from TAB_XYZ;
    -8
So the maximal string length for this column is 8 characters. To reduce the column width back to its original 8, we then run:
    alter table TAB_XYZ modify (COL_XYZ varchar2(8));
    -Error report:
SQL Error: ORA-01441: cannot decrease column length because some value is too big
01441. 00000 - "cannot decrease column length because some value is too big"
    *Cause:
    *Action:
So we leave the column width at 10, but the curious thing is - once we have the data in the target table, we can then truncate the same table at source (ie. get rid of all the data) and move the data back in the original table (with COL_XYZ set at CHAR(8)) - without any issue.
My guess the error has something to do with the storage on the target database, but I would like to understand why. If anybody has an idea or suggestion what to look for - much appreciated.
    Cheers.

Use SQL Reference for datatype specification, length function, etc.

    Hi,
if there is any empty tag coming from source then target structure tag will not be created and because of which ur payload structure and FCC configuration is not matching.
To use map with default between source and target strcture so in case source tag dont have value target structure will be created because of mapwithdegfault fuction and ur FCC will not fail.
Open SXMB_MONI output payload and compare the structre with Data type u will se for no source value target tag is not created at all and FCC is failed.

  • Replicat error: ORA-12899: value too large for column ...

    Hi,
In our system Source and Target are on the same physical server and in the same Oracle instance. Just different schemes.
Tables on the target were created as 'create table ... as select * from ... source_table', so they have a similar structure. Table names are also similar.
I started replicat, it worked fine for several hours, but when I inserted Chinese symbols into the source table I got an error:
WARNING OGG-00869 Oracle GoldenGate Delivery for Oracle, OGGEX1.prm: OCI Error ORA-12899: value too large for column "MY_TARGET_SCHEMA"."TABLE1"."*FIRSTNAME*" (actual: 93, maximum: 40) (status = 12899), SQL <INSERT INTO "MY_TARGET_SCHEMA"."TABLE1" ("USERID","USERNAME","FIRSTNAME","LASTNAME",....>.
    FIRSTNAME is Varchar2(40 char) field.
I suppose the problem probably is our database is running with NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS='CHAR'
I've double checked tables structure on the target - it's identical with the source.
I also tried to manually insert this record into the target table using 'insert into ... select * from ... ' statement - it works. The problem seems to be in the replicat.
    How to fix this error?
    Thanks in advance!
