I think this is where this would go (other likely sections include "Applications & Desktop Environments" and "Networking, Server, and Protection"), but if this is the wrong section, please move it.
What would you suggest as alternatives to Google Drive/Docs and Dropbox? Currently, I have Copy.com as my alternative to Dropbox, but there are a few problems I'm having with it. Right now, I'm currently considering either OwnCloud or Seafile to replace both Google Drive and Copy.com, but I'm not sure which one to pick. Alternatively, I'm also considering git-annex or pure git repos.
For the things I'm considering:
OwnCloud: Has the upside of being able to edit *.odt files inline, //but//, its editor for *.odt formatting's still pretty basic. Not to mention there's these two egregious bugs that I hope get fixed soon. Also has cross-platform clients. I currently have this on my server, but I haven't fully configured it yet after noticing those.
Seafile: Also has collaborative editing, but it's limited to markdown (which I don't mind, but it'd require me to edit the code a little bit to support the formatting I usually use with my markdown files) and *.seaf (its special rich text file format). The amount of formatting options for the rich text format is enough for me and whoever else'd be scribbling on it. Also has cross-platform clients.
git-annex: SImply because git. And non-redundant copies for the things it revisions. I wouldn't mind losing the collaborative editing, but, I won't be able to use this with my Windows laptop. I think I might be able to use this with my phone too, but I'm not sure.
An... rsync server?: The rsync protocol is ideal for this, but I haven't done enough in depth research to make sure this is right for me. I'll be sure to edit the OP after I finish doing this.
Things I've tried before:
Dropbox: Nothing wrong with it functionality wise, but Drop Dropbox has information on why I'm not using it. (and this would've worked fantastically with webodt to provide a preview to my friends of the files I have without forcing them to download it)
Google Drive/Docs: Absolutely fantastic for collaborating with other people and quickly sharing, but storing files into multiple parent folders creates a LOT of redundant copies in the export when I want to take regular backups of my Google Drive contents. Not to mention the Google Drive API for retrieving the revisions is extremely unreliable compared to how they show the revisions in the Doc editor GUI (which is flawless).
Copy.com: Nothing wrong with it functionality wise... except for their CLI client. It's kind of buggy and I use it to get public links for my files since I don't have Nautilus or Caja. I'm hoping that they get to fixing the bug for regexes in their commandline app or at least put some in-depth documentation about the limitations of the wildcards, but I have little hope for this judging by how they handled my support tickets. I also tried using webodt to serve up previews to my friends, but the sanitized HTML output prevents this.
Things that I usually sync or collab on, which maybe of note when suggesting alternatives (that either replace and/or complement) to what I've tried and what I'm considering:
Lots of plain text files from Gimp configs, notes, chat logs, etc.
Lots of images since I use it to sync wallpapers, silly pictures, etc.
*.odt files since I usually keep my stories in that format so I can edit them wherever whenever
[EDIT]: Forgot to mention that the minimum requirement for collabing and/or sharing things is to provide a public link that can be referred to in a bare html page that uses webodf.js (<- which I have made before) so I can show it to my non-tech savvy friends. Or similarly, I could construct an on-the-fly bare html page that presents the HTML for the markdown for the other shared files since not a lot of them know what markdown looks like. (Or just regularly render the markdown/odt files to html and show the link to that, though that makes storage on my end redundant)
Example: http://example.url show just a blank page
http://example.url?show=http://other.url will show a rendered preview of the file referred to in that url.
[EDIT]: Also forgot to mention that for public file linking, I'm thinking of transfer.sh for now to temporarily share copies of stories to people who don't have SyncThing or similar syncing clients installed. The last bit to figure out is how I'm going to quickly share a batch of images without having to manually re-upload them on another host. Heartbeat also looks interesting, but will have to wait four more days before testing it.
[EDIT]: SyncThing+https://ptpb.pw/ is my settled on solution for now.

Just came back from setting it up on my desktop and servier. Wow, setting it up is this easy? //And// I can have different versioning schemes for the folders I sync? Sweet! (Not to mention there's also a pluggable API for versioning, I may wanna toy with that during winter break)
I just put my WallPapers folder inside the Sync folder to test how well it handles big data, which is swimmingly (and can partly be attributed that I told the server and the desktop their IPs like in jason's blog).
I'll start syncing the rest of my things into SyncThing, then figure out how I'm going to get around the public link showing for friends and reviewers.
[EDIT]: Just got this also installed on my phone (with a custom .stignore file) and on my laptop. Both are syncing well with the current node configuration. Now just to figure out how to show random public links without the other person having to have syncthing too.
[EDIT]: Since a few days after posting this, there's also the option of https://ptpb.pw/ for the public linking that can be reused to provide a consistent, random public link for each file/batch of files. Because of this, I'm marking the first post as [SOLVED].

  • PC Suite File Sync

I just downloaded the PC Suite 6.84.10.3 since I have been longin g file sync for long time. Unfortunately it seems to be working only partially. Changes on my E61i files are not identified as more recent from the suite and the older PC files are overwritten on the E61i (yes, I checked the clocks and they differ of 5 seconds).
Also changes on PC files are not always recognized.
    Any suggestion ?
Also would be nice to sync files in multiple folders.
    Andrea

    Hi,
I know, that it not going to solve your problem completely, but with my technique the file sync option is more useful.
    - Create a briefcase folder on your PC. This folder will be your sync folder what you set in PcSuite to sync.
    - collect all your docs, folders, pictures and so on in this folder.
That's it, your files will be synced automatically. After PcSync finished, you have to sync your briefcase folder by right click on it and choose sync all.
With similar technique you can manage your bookmarks as well if you replace your Mobile bookmarks folder in your bookmarks folder with a briefcase folder called:Mobile bookmarks.

  • HT6437 My itunes cannot locate my ipod. All the sync option are grayed out and diagnostics says that itunes cannot find usb ports and that no device is connected when it is. What should I do to solve this issue?

So itunes is giving me problems. Since around Christmas time, itunes decided to stop reading my ipod. I connect it to my computer with the usb cable and my computer will recognize that a device is connected but itunes will not. If I go to file->devices and try to sync, all of my sync options are grayed out, while before it would just automatically sync.
When I run diagnostics it tells me that under ports that it cannot find usb ports (it has a green circle?), a type of cable isn't found, and that no device is connected with the usb cable (which my ipod is). I have been trying to fix this issue but nothing is working. I've tried restarting my ipod, itunes, and my computer, i've also tried resetting my ipod and uninstalling itunes then reinstalling itunes but nothing seems to be working.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue?

Do the USB ports work for other devices?
    Does the iPod charge?

    Hi the_mad_movies,
It seems like this article will be the best option for addressing this issue:
Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

    Error 3194:
This device isn't eligible for the requested build
It means that Apple has stopped signing the version of iOS that you have, try downloading the latest iOS version, then try Restore again.

  • How can I solve error 3194? My hosts file is clean!

Hi, I try to restore my iPhone and iPad which both are a jailbroken iOS 5.1.1 to a clean 5.1.1 (and no, I don't want to update to iOS 6).
Now when I am restoring them with shift+click restore and choose the correct and clean iOS 5.1.1 ipsw it gives me error 3194 after extracting.
Error 3194 can be solved by cleaning the hosts file in system32,drivers,etc folder BUT my hosts file is clean and I can ping gs.apple.com . Deactivating Firewalls didn't help. I don't think it's a connection problem between my PC and gs.apple.com . Some say you get this if you have a jailbroken device. Well thanks, now I know why I'm getting it, but not how to solve it
So. How can I restore my phone and get rid of error 3194?
Even a clean iTunes on a friends PC couldn't restore my iOS devices. My iPod nano restored w/o any problem.
    Thanks

Reboot and see whether it goes away.

Hi, My Lightroom CC is showing waiting for connection and the mobile sync is not working. I have tried deleteing lrsync data, disabling firewall, checked host file etc. Still no luck.

I had the same problem. It fixed itself when I opened Internet Explorer (I don't normally use it). I was opening Support Portal to get some support help, but I'm not sure if it was the page or simply opening IE that did the trick.

Since localhost is already stated here:

Is there any harm in leaving that entry?

Not as far as I know.
It probably just re-encounters the localhost hostname and either dumbly re-adds it to the internal table or ignores it. In any case, no logically discernible harm done.

  • [Solved] hosts file with ipv6 disabled

    Hello community!
So I have disabled ipv6, as it was causing various issues and Comcast has not yet implemented ipv6 in my area.  Disabling was no problem, but nowhere can i find information regarding whether or not to keep the ipv6 line in the hosts file.  Should I comment it out?
For clarity I am referring to the ::1 line.  Will commenting it out be problematic, or will keeping it be problematic, or does it not really matter?  I know having an improperly configured hosts file can cause all sorts of network issues, so I am very curious.
Right now I have it commented out, and I have not noticed any real problems, but I also have a Realtek wireless card using rtl8192ce, which is not the most stable driver/connection.  Thus my connection is kind of intermittently crappy.  So I am curious if I am making my connection crappier than it was before.
    Thanks in advance!
Edit:  Of course as soon as I posted this, I found an answer.  The Debian wiki recommends commenting it out when completely disabling ipv6.  So to those who at least read my post, thanks!
Last edited by WonderWoofy (2012-08-19 20:19:44)

    @WonderWoofy,
Do you have a link for the Debian wiki? I'd like to understand the reasoning.
To be honest, I didn't even realise that line was for ipv6. Since I've disabled it in sysctl.conf, I should probably consider commenting it out, too. Right now, I seem to be loading firewall modules for ipv6, mind, which seems like slightly more security than can be strictly necessary if the thing is disabled...
    @ghen,
It isn't, that I know of, a matter of "figuring it out correctly". Having ipv6 enabled can screw up ipv4 connections. Having it enabled prevents me from connecting to the internet at all on one of the networks I use. As I understand it, a properly configured network shouldn't do this but when the official IT support people say the problem is that you have ipv6 enabled, you don't have much choice. (And it isn't as if there's anything to be gained by having it enabled.)

  • RMAN causing "log file sync"

    Hi,
Maybe someone can help me on this.
We have a RAC database in production that (for some) applications need a response of 0,5 seconds. In general that is working.
Outside of production hours we make a weekly full backup and daily incremental backup so that is not bothering us. However as soon as we make an archive backup or a backup of the control file during production hours we have a problem as the application have to wait for more then 0,5 seconds for a respons caused by the event "log file sync" with wait class "Commit".
I already adjusted the script for RMAN so that we use only have 1 files per set and also use one channel. However that didn't work.
Increasing the logbuffer was also not a success.
Increasing Large pool is in our case not an option.
We have 8 redolog groups with each 2 members ( each 250 Mb) and an average during the day of 12 logswitches per hour which is not very alarming. Even during the backup the I/O doesn't show very high activity. The increase of I/O at that moment is minor but (maybe) apperantly enough to cause the "log file sync".
Oracle has no documentation that gives me more possible causes.
Strange thing is that before the first of October we didn't have this problem and there were no changes made.
Has anyone an idea where to look further or did anyone experience a thing like this and was able to solve it?
    Kind regards

The only possible contention I can see is between the log writer and the archiver. 'Backup archivelog' in RMAN means implicitly 'ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT' (log switch and archiving the online log).
You should alternate redo logs on different disks to minimize the effect of the archiver on the log writer.

  • [SOLVED] Local Hosting Using a Dynamic DNS

I've been trying to self host a domain to use owncloud with, through www.mydomainname/owncloud.com or something similar. I've gotten a LAMP set up with a virtual host, have signed up with https://freedns.afraid.org/, set the afraid nameservers, set my IP as an A record through my domain provider and have tried to install a dynamic DNS client on my server computer, though I have not gotten successful results. On my LAMP I've set a virtual host for my domain and I've been able to connect to it locally but not outside of my network. I was able to ping my domain that would in result ping my home IP address but now I get an unknown host. I've also tried to set up my DDWRT router with the provided dyndns. At this point I'm not sure what I'm doing incorrectly.
Another issue I've been having has been finding a working dyndns client, afraid-dyndns-uv from the AUR gives me a hash error, and the only promising client I've been able to find is freedns-afraid, but it's an RPM package and I don't know how to make use of the files in the tarball.
I can provide any needed configs, though I don't think that a config would be an error as I've been able to start up my httpd service and connect to it locally perfectly fine. I would greatly appreciate any help c:

  • Font menu loses self-hosted web fonts on updating Muse

    Muse 2014.2.0.569
When I update muse, the font menu loses the self-hosted web fonts I had added in 2014.1.
Adding the self-hosted web fonts is not an easy piece of work due to the file name obfuscation applied by the supplier, myfonts.com. Repeating this work could take a couple of hours.
Muse should at least remember the user-added self-hosted web fonts. Ideally it would sync them between both my computers.

The prefs for 2014.1 are in:
"~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.AdobeMuseCC.2014.1/Local Store" (copy and paste everything, including the tilde ~, but not the quotes, into the Go > Go To Folder dialog in the Finder)
From the old 2014.1 folder you want to copy:
    fonts.db
    selfhosted
    tk1
    tk2
into the new prefs folder for 2014.2 at:
"~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.AdobeMuseCC.2014.2/Local Store" (copy and paste everything, including the tilde ~, but not the quotes, into the Go > Go To Folder dialog in the Finder)
Once you've done that, when you launch Muse all the self-hosted fonts and Edge Web Fonts you had previous installed or enabled should be present.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • File sync speed, reliability

To those who are already using CC, how is the speed and uptime of the file syncing service? I tried it free in the browser (I think they give 2 GB free) and the speed seemed glacially slow compared to services like DropBox. Also, my InDesign file synced but it doesn't show your linked images so everything is a low-res preview. Worse than a PDF. I'm trying to understand how I would ever use this to show something to a client.

    Bill Bridgeforth wrote:

    Hi Bill,
    There is this:
    http://status.creativecloud.com/
    Judging by daily things like:
    - Sync is down (completely, like the last few days)
    - Some users may experience delays in working with their files.
    - Some users may experience poor performance with some features of the service.
It seems pretty self evident this is not a viable option for professionals or those who need a reliable service.

  • Cloud based file sync for SBS?

Hey All, I don't know if this already exists or if you know of a software program that can allow this. I have a large handful of SBS clients and non server environments. I would like to possibly host a server and then have my client's SBS server sync their
files to my self hosting server. The idea is to give my clients greater piece of mind and quick access to data in the event of a catastrophe. I know programs like Crashplan are out there, but does it support SBS with Exchange?

    Hi,
Do you mean the online backup for SBS? If the OS version is Windows Server 2012 Essentials, maybe we could use Windows Azure Online backup. For details, please refer to the following article.

  • How to access same iPhoto library from MacBook and iPad without making a copy (sync option)

I have a simple question to you guys (tried to sort it out with Apple tech support but no luck there!)
How can I set up iPhoto in a way that I can have access to the same files from iPhoto on MacBook and from iPhoto app on iPad? I do not wish to sync files as this will create a copy of a file and also when for example you do editing of an image on Mac you want that to automatecly reflect on a file being viewed later on on iPad (and the other way around) without the need of a sync. option
I tested this with photo stream but the problem there is that in order to make any changes to an image you HAVE to do it in the library folder you can not do it in the photostream i.e you took a pix on your iPhone, - photostream pushed it to your iPad and to your Mac, - you've desided to let's say to crop the image on Mac then you've closed that image. When then you open the same image on your iPad (or iPhone) the image is not cropped, why? becouse you've edited an image inside the iPhoto library on the Mac and didn't sync it with iPad.
So it would be great if iPhone and Mac worked with the same library - save space and cleaner workflow!

    And again
    there is no solution today
You can not - there is no commonality between iPhoto on the Mac and on the iPad except the name
You can sync - you can use PhotoStream - you can not share a library - and IOS devices can not access external hard drives and if they could they can not read the contents of the iPhoto library since there is no commonality between iPhoto on the Mac and on the iPad except the nameYou can put your iPhoto library on an external drive if you wish as long as the volmne it is on is formattted Mac OS extended (journaled) - but that does not change the fact that neither the iPad nor the iPhone can access it since there is no commonality between iPhoto on the Mac and on the iPad except the nameIt really is extremely simple - you can not do it today
