[Solved] Several problems after big update

Hello. Yesterday i made a pacman -Syu that upgraded many packages, after rebooting, i found out that many things got broken, like the keyboard, that got a strange keymap and i can't change it, at least not by the regular ways. Chromium doesn't start, file-roller gives a Gconf error, LibreOffice says that every document that i try to open is protected from editing by a unknown user, video streaming websites doesn't buffer any video and Firefox gives this error "There is not enough room on the disk to save /tmp/DMgQyMeY.part" when downloading .srt files (.rar files are downloaded with no error, but... empty) and the login (going from the login window to fully loaded desktop) is really slow.
I have been looking in pacman's log for packages that can push arch into widespread malfunctions when failling, but i'm kind of lost.
This is the log

already tried a kernel downgrade, and nothing. And i also tried downgrading xorg-server + xorg-common + evdev + fbdev + vesa and intel drivers... and the trackpad died. (re-updated and it's now ok)
This is not the first time that it happend. There was 2 "strikes" long ago with the same troubles, and one of them included an unconfigurable 600x800 resolution. Both times i didn't found out the cause and waited several weeks using windows until another full pacman -Syu upgrade fixed everything (yes... the coward way), but this time i need to fix it soon... and since it's turning into an habit, i want to know what to do the next time.
thats all, sorry for the long post. thanks.

No, pacman said something about a problem with some packages, so i said "no" when it asked if i wanted to update pacman first. Later, i made another update and pacman said that i should do a pacman-db-upgrade, and i did that.
Anyhow, the other times that i had this problems, there was no pacman update conflicts with other packages.

i think so, but im not sure about / because of this output
df -k
S.ficheros Bloques de 1K Usado Dispon Uso% Montado en
udev 10240 244 9996 3% /dev
/dev/sda4 9661440 9610912 0 100% /
none 1027012 0 1027012 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda3 101105 18848 77036 20% /boot
/dev/sda5 34898052 22993176 10132108 70% /home
its spanish, usado = used and Dispon = Available
looks like / is actually full, or at least is readed as being full,  it might be the cause of firefox not downloading files and not buffering videos right? both are stored in / ?.
And the de-compressed tmp files goes to / right? What about LibreOffice? is there any tmp file for it?
So, how can i free space on / without messing with some important stuff?
And there are still issues with chromium not loading , keyboard miss-configuration and  GUI session manager not loading. Does / being full have something to do with it?

  • [Solved] Several problems after update

    Hi.
I updated my system (yaourt -Syua).
Since then I have three problems, I don't know how much connected to each other.
    First,
I can't enter LXDE. After I login, I get back the login screen of xdm.
When I go init 3, and start startx from console, then I get a black screen, until I do AltCtrlF7.
Meanwhile on the console this happens:
    [laca@varch ~]$ startx
    X.Org X Server 1.12.4
    ... etc ... etc ...
errors from xkbcomp are not fatal to the X server
    No protocol specified
waiting for X server to begin accepting connections .
    No protocol specified
    No protocol specified
    No protocol specified
    No protocol specified
    and so on.
    Second,
My .Xauthority and .bash_history files got reset to 0 length.
And every time I log out, or explicitly do a history -w , the .bash_history file gets touched, but remains 0 length.
    Third,
When I ssh with X forwarding to that machine, and want to start an X client, then I get:
X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.
(It may be independent of the update.)
    Any help appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] KDEmod problem after Xorg Update

    Hi!
Before explain my problem, I have to say that my english isn't perfect, sorry ^_^ (i'm spanish).
    Ok, let's go:
One week ago, I updated my system and Xorg was updated too, since that update my KDEmod restarts always. I read the kdm.log, and it says something about the RGBPath, then I went to my xorg.conf and comment that line.
After that, I could start my X with Gnome, but when I tried with KDEMod, it says "the module Record doesn't exist", I was searching about this module, and I saw that in xorg.conf there was a line that load this module. I also comment it too.
Now, when I try to start KDE, it loads, and when in the splashscreen appears the "K", if I click the mouse then appears my Desktop for 3 or 4 seconds, after that, KDE restarts and splashscreen loads another time, so i'm in a bucle. BTW, if i don't click the mouse, it also restarts after 7 or 8 seconds that K is "load", and begin the bucle loading kde with the splash screen too.
    kdm.log doesn't return an error.
What do you think about that?.
    Thanks!
    EDIT:
I forgot something: another error that I had is with "libGLcore", it said: "libGLcore.177" and "libGLcore.180" have the same name but different file type (or something like that). I fix with the re-install of the manual nvidia drivers.]
    =================================================================
    FIX
    writte in konsole:
    nvidia-xconfig
    THen add to xorg.conf
    Section "ServerFlags"
    OPtion "AutoAddDevices" "False"
    EndSection
    And then, I fix it.

  • [SOLVED] Several problems after fresh installation

    Hi guys,
i just did a fresh installation of arch and every times i must do something i get this error:
cannot remove, read, edit and etc : read-only file system
So i searched for a workaround.. but i must do this after every boot
    This is it:
    mount -oremount,rw /
There's a way to fix this forever?
Often when i need to edit some files, like /etc/pacman.conf or xorg config file, arch tell me: You do not have write permission to modify... that file
Searched another workaround.. and also this i must do every time after each boot:
sudo chown -R black /directory of file that i'm trying to edit/
I hope to fix this annoying problems, with your help.
    Thanks guys,
    Gabriele.

    Ok guys,
think solved by change my /sda6/ (root) by /mnt to / and adding a slash / before home, boot, var.
Rebooted and try to edit the same file /etc/fstab and no warnings
    Now is like this:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir>     <type>     <options>                <dump>    <pass>
    tmpfs                    /tmp        tmps        nodev,nosuid             0                0
    #UUID=blablablabla
    /dev/sda6                  /             ext4                  rw,relatime           0   1
    #UUID=blablabla
    /dev/sda9                  /home            ext4                 rw,relatime            0   2
    #UUID=blablabla
    /dev/sda5                  /boot              ext2                 rw,relatime             0   2
    #UUID=blablabla
    /dev/sda7                  /var                 reiserfs            rw,relatime             0   2
    #UUID=blablabla
    /dev/sda8                  none              swap                defaults                  0   0
Thanks to everyone i also fixed my 2nd problem that i think is related to the first

  • [Solved] Several problems after switch to systemd

After many issues with today's update (like broken locale, broken suspend2ram, broken shutdown/restart, broken autologin, broken CPU clocking, broken fan control and broken wicd) I'm stuck with three of them, the most important being wicd.
Autologin is working now and after login I have to enter a password for wicd (which was not the case before the update). After entering the password I get the dbus connection error: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/wi … or_message If I kill wicd (which is runnig directly after boot, but not running properly), starting and stopping and starting again with systemctl works fine. But the autostart mostly fails for some reason (in rare cases it works though). I'm quite new to systemd and don't even know hot to open the new journal in a proper editor to search for errors efficiently.
The second thing is that the locale is being reset to C or POSIX I suppose, at least it's not German as it should be and also is set in /etc/locale.conf.
The third thing is that the Thinkpad fan control fails to start, too. I created a .conf file to load the thinkpad_acpi module which seems to work. If I start /usr/sbin/tpfand manually, the fan control works. But here also the autostart fails.
Sorry for the confused description containing about nothing on error or debug information, but I don't really know where to start digging and get useful information about systemd.
    Thanks for any hint,
    PhotonX

  • [SOLVED]iwlagn problem after kernel update

yesterday i updated kernel to 2.6.32.10. after reboot kernel.log started with messages like:
    Mar 17 09:59:43 laptop kernel: iwlagn 0000:04:00.0: free more than tfds_in_queue (0:1)
log creates that message when i do something online. looks like every time i reload page/ping/do anything online that message goes to kernel.log.
    the thing that
    worries me is this:
    % cat /var/log/kernel.log | grep tfds_in_que | wc -l
    20106
my computer is up for less than an hour.
    wlan card is intel 5100
does anyone have any suggestion? go back to kernel 2..6.32.9?
EDIT: everything else works fine. wlan is working without a problem.

i confirm that have the same problem
Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5100
    [root@hermes ~]# cat /var/log/kernel.log|grep tfds_in_queue|wc -l

    [root@hermes ~]# uptime
    20:52:08 up 1:18, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.02, 0.05
    this is really nasty
from changelog on kernel.org  i find this:
    commit 44af042e42f2231579ea8ef7586d3789d198f609
    Author: Stanislaw Gruszka <[email protected]>
    Date:   Fri Feb 19 15:47:33 2010 -0800
iwlwifi: sanity check before counting number of tfds can be free
        commit a120e912eb51e347f36c71b60a1d13af74d30e83 upstream.
Check the frame control for ieee80211_is_data_qos() is true before
counting the number of tfds can be free, the tfds_in_queue only
increment when ieee80211_is_data_qos() is true before transmit; so it
should only decrement if the type match.
Remove ieee80211_is_data_qos check for frame_ctrl in tx_resp to avoid
        invalid information pass from uCode.

  • [SOLVED] Boot problems after rEFInd update

    Hello,
I dual boot windows and arch using rEFInd. After an rEFInd update yesterday my system directly boots into windows. Any ideas how to bring the rEFInd menu back?
    Thanks!

The refind-efi package install the file to /usr/{lib,share}/refind/*  . You need to manually copy the files to UEFISYS partition. The files in /boot/efi/EFI/arch/refind/* should have been removed when refind-efi-x86_64 pkg was removed. BTW try gummiboot-efi also.

  • [SOLVED] module problems after kernel update

after update to linux-3.10.10-1 I cannot load some modules anymore:
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'tp_smapi': Exec format error
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'hdaps': Exec format error
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'vboxdrv': Exec format error
seems to be all thinkpad modules plus virtualbox. Probably these packages need an update to work with new kernel..?

Probably they do, yes. How exactly did you update? Did you do pacman -Su (or -Syu), or did you selectively update just some packages? You aren't supposed to update just parts of your system – if you do, weird things happen – such as your kernel suddenly not loading all your modules.

  • [solved] dhcp-problems after updating package networkmanager 0.9.4.0-6

    Hi,
I have some problems to get an ip address with dhcp on the device eth0. On wlan0 I get a ip address with dhcp depending on the network.
Anyone with the same problem after the update from version 5 to version 6?
After downgrading to version 5 everything works fine...
    Thank you!
    EDIT:
Don't know what it was, today after updating only networkmanager everything works fine.

  • Multiple Samsung Stratosphere problems after FF1 update

There have been multiple posts on various issues users have found after the recent Stratopshere FF1 update.  Some were replys to older posts and some only touched on a single issue.  I wanted to consolodate into one thread, and hopefully get teh attention of Verizon to maybe reply here.
For reference, a lot has been discuss here --> https://community.verizonwireless.com/message/874446
Summary:  Verizon and Samsung have finally updated the Stratosphere almost 1 year after release.  This updated the phone from Android 2.3.5 to Android 2.3.6.  Going by filename, this is known as the FF1 update.   This update went live at the end of August 2012, and most users were upgraded before mid September 2012.
There were some noticable changes in this update:
-Lock screen has changed.  The puzzle piece and glass lock options have been removed.  New options have been added, such as facial recognition unlock.
-Call answering screen has changed, introducing the option to ignore call with a message.
-Camera now has digital zoom ability.
-Ability to uninstall the 2 games the phone comes with (Need for Speed and Lets Golf)
-Phone icon has changed ever so slightly
-Wifi icon now included up and down arrows to indicate data is being sent or recieved
-Wallpaper no longer "stretches" over multiple screens - ie, it no longer scrolls as you move from screen to screen
-The visual voicemail app has been improved (I have personally not used this feature)
-Callback number is now supported in text / picture messages
-Android core OS updated from 2.3.5 to 2.3.6 (both versions are still Gingerbread)
-Update to how the device deals with the end of scrolling.  It used to rubber-band bounce back, now it will just give a green bar and expand the bar as you scroll.  (I cannot fault Samsung for this change as this was at teh core of an Apple lawsuit and has been changed in newer versions of Android.)
-(I am sure there are more.  please list any others you may have noticed)
I have found some problems, and others have confirmed that this is (at least) somewhat widespread:
-The biggest problem is with wifi connectivity.  Upon an initial connection to wifi, everything works great.  After somewhere between 15minutes and 2 hours, problems start happening.  Its as if the wifi keeps hanging or reconnecting.  Download speeds (tested with the SpeedTest.com app) slow to about one third of normal.  Apps like Facebook that require a constant connection will just time out.
-It appears the signal strength for 3g and 4g connections is lower.  There are places where I used to get a 4g connection, and now I only get 3g.  Some palces I fall back to just 2g digital.
Another minor issue i found was with text messages.  When you reply to a message, it no longer automatically focuses the text in the input box.  You have to first click into the box to start typing.  Not a huge deal, but one more step to take over and over.  Minor annoyence.
At my house, I struggle to get a 3g or 4g signal.  I depend on wifi for my data connection.  So with the wifi connection problem introduced by teh FF1 update, my phone is somewhat useless to me now while at home.  Here are teh troubleshooting steps I have been through so far to attempt to fix the wifi problem:
-Complete factory reset on my phone.  (did not help)
-Pull battery and SIM card out of phone for 15 minutes.  (did not help)
-Went to a Verizon store.  The guy at the store was helpful, and said he also had a Stratosphere and was getting the same wifi problems after the update.  He said all he could do was to send me out a replacement phone. I got the replacement phone, and it had the same problems.
-I read in multiple palces that Android 2.3.6 has a bug within wifi and DHCP.  Apparently if you have a DHCP lease set to "forever", the phone will keep requesting a new address.  Setting the DHCP server on the router to something like 2 weeks, or using a static IP is supposed to solve this.  I have a NetGear N900 router, and I can not change teh DHCP lease time.  It appears, however, that my router is not sending out "forever" leases.  But just to make sure, I gave my phone a static IP.  (None of these steps made any difference).
The only thing that temporarily fixes the problem is a reboot of the phone.  This will again give you anywhere from 15min to 2 hours of good wifi use before problems start happening.
I have now had this update for over a week, and on 2 phones.  I still can't maintain a wifi connection for much longer than 15 minutes without problems starting up.
I am asking Verizon or Samsung to at least confirm this issue if possible.  Maybe there are newer revs of the Stratopshere hardware that don't have this problem.  Or there is something unique about my (and apparently others) situation.  But it seems like Verizon's current stance is to offer a repalcement phone (as currently all Stratospheres are within their 1 year manufacture warranty as the phone has not been ouy for quite 1 year yet).
I am asking for a workaround for this problem, or a true fix adressed by a new software update, or at least allow us to roll back to the original Andorid 2.3.5 software.
I have had my original Stratosphere for almost a year with no wifi problems - then get the FF1 update and have had nothing but problems on 2 different phones.
    Thank you for your time.

Thanks for starting a comprehensive thread on problems with this update. I want to add one more.
I have Bluetooth in my car (a 2004 model), and previously the phone has connected to it practically instantly when I start the car. Since the update, I have never been able to connect the phone to the car by Bluetooth. Several times the phone has made a standard notification sound at the moment it should be connecting to Bluetooth, though no notification appears. I have no idea what that could mean. The car's Bluetooth shows up as paired in the list of devices in Settings > Wireless & networks > Bluetooth settings. I haven't seen this widely reported as an update issue, but perhaps some others have experienced it too.
UPDATE: I finally did some testing, and found that the notification was to signal the extremely brief appearance of a dialog indicating that the car's Bluetooth was requesting a connection. Accepting that request let the phone connect with the car, and calls went to the car's sound system as they should. When I turned the car off and back on (just the electrical system; not wasting any gas on this!), the connection was established immediately, so apparently the acceptance only had to be done once. Nevertheless, it did have to be done, and the dialog notification disappears within seconds. I believe it would have been possible to go into Bluetooth settings and accept the connection request there if I missed the notification; but not seeing the notification, I might not know to do this.
One further observation: When I turned the phone's Bluetooth off and back on after a connection had been established, leaving the car on the whole time, the two did not reconnect. I believe that may be different from before the update, but I'm not really sure.

  • [solved] X11 desaster after todays update!

    Hi!
I have some big problem after todays update of my system. I just installed the new Kernel 2.6.19-beyond (I need this one because of my reiser4 partitions) and rebuild the nvidia module for it. After the usual restart I'm no longer able to start KDM or KDE at all. Whenever I want to start KDE the either by using kdm or startx my computer starts working for about 5 seconds, the screen starts to switch as usual, but than I get thrown back to the console, having a blank screen laft and the computer doesn't react anymore.
It also stops working immediately and I only can push trhe reset button. This is some fatal problem since I have lots of work that needs to be done. I also switched the xorg.conf to the nv or vesa module but still the same thing happens. I also rebuild the beyond kernel but the same thing.
So can anybody help me with this. I need to get my work done and couldn't find any answer to this. This is very urgent since I already have a schedule that is almost out of control.
    Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the advice. But I usually delete the cache after a while, so it just happened that I did this a couple of days ago so I don't have the previous kernel in there.
About the Xorg.0.log, I already checked it for any error or warning by using
    more /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep WW
    and
    more /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE
but there's nothing in there that indicates any problem. Both results don't show any warning or error. Besides that I didn't change the xorg.conf after the update and it worked before....
But thanks anyway for trying to help me out. Do you (or anybody else here) have another idea that I might have not thought of?
So I'm still stuck on this and my working clock is ticking.
I really don't have any clue what this might cause.  :?
    Thanks!
