[Solved] Spanish characters not read on NTFS hard drive

Hi there,
Every time I mount my NTFS hard drive with the windows partition on it, I can't read the file names properly. Instead of á, é, í, ó and ú it introduces boxes or interrogation signs. Any idea why that may be?

Yes, it's surely missing support for utf8. I guess that's happening with automount? Are you running Gnome? For I encountered that just shortly ago there. HAL isn't getting the correct locale options. (It can't be KDE for it got fixed there in 4.1.1 or .2)
In Gnome run gconf-editor
/ -> apps -> system -> ntfs-3g -> mount_options: [locale=es_ES.UTF8]
Set locale to whatever your locale is, I just assumed Spain now. That should get you going. Additionally you might want to add ",utf8" to vfat mount_options as well, just in case you use FAT32 drives as well (or will in the future).
If that doesn't help you please tell us where exactly you get this issue and, what DE etc. Good luck.

  • Encoding on terminal to read/write ntfs hard drive help!

I encoded in Terminal the codes that were posted online regarding the enabling of read/write for ntfs hard drive but something went wrong during the process. Would it be possible to undo it? Would there be any code to disable it so I could at least read it? It won't even read my hard drive anymore. I think I have accidentally delete the Volumes part where it was supposed to appear.

Difficult to say without knowing what you did more precisely. Use the terminal history command as follows:
         history > ~/Desktop/MyNightmare.txt
to save what you got up to in a file on your desktop. Copy and paste the lines that will show us what you did. Check for, and redact as necessary, any personal information such as user names, passwords, etc. before posting.
Also, I assume that you tried to edit your /etc/fstab file so please post the results of these terminal commands
         ls -la /etc/fstab

  • Referenced files in Aperture 3 are not reading from new hard drive.

I just merged one libary into another library on my machine in Aperture 3. Everything seemed to work fine with that. Many of the images in the new large library are referenced images. I had many of them initially referenced onto external drives. I'm not consolidating into one larger drive (with a back up too of course). I copied the files onto the larger drive from the individual external drives. I plugged in the new external drive with all of the photos on it and when I went to locate referenced images in Aperture, I found them, however many times the "reconnect" or "reconnect all" buttons are greyed out when I choose the photo. It's not letting me reconnect the images and they do have the same file names.
I have no idea what to think or do. I don't want to have to plug in all of the old drives to get to the pictures. I want everything on one drive to access my large aperture library that is now all in one place as well.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

    aperture 3
I meant the full version number:
With permissions I meant the following:
You need to have read & write permissions to the files to be able to reconnect the files. To check the permissions, select an original image filein the Finder and press the key combination ⌘I to launch the "Info" panel. In the Info panel disclose the "Sharing&Permissions" brick.
Check if you have Read&Write access to all your image files, also to the folders containing them. If there is a permissions problem, change the permissions to "Read&Write". It would help to set the "Ignore Ownership on this Volume" flag. You'll find this flag in the "Info" panel for your external drive.
But the safest way really to solve this would be to let Aperture relocate the files to your new drive and not to move them manually. Connect the original drives with your original master image files and move the masters by using Aperture's command "Relocate original file". Then their would be no need to reconnect.

  • My macbook does not read my lacie hard drive

    Hello,
I have a lacie external hard drive that I use on my mac book. This worked very well, but since yesterday when I plug it into the USB port, a message appears telling me that my device is too energy intensive (translation of the message displayed in French). Usb keys work very well. Anyone knows there a solution to this problem?
    Thanks a lot.

This is a common problem. The MacBook usb ports supply a limited amount of power. If the connected device(s) tries to draw more than that, the connection is terminated.
There really is only one long term solution, viz. a powered USB hub. You connect the hub to the MacBook with a usb cable. The hub is plugged into a power outlet (in the wall) and the usb devices are plugged into the hub.
You can buy a hub with 4 or 6 or 8 or even more ports.

  • Macbook 2006 doesn't read the new hard drive

I had to replace a new internal Hard drive on a macbook late 2006 13" white. I put a Seagate 500 GB SATA 16mb 7200 RPM and also I upgrade the ram to 2gb, but when I try to installed Mac OS Snow Leopard, the computer does not read the internal hard drive to install the snow leopard. How can I resolved this problem??

You must prep the new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the Snow Leopard installation.

  • How to create a pdf form allowing Reader user to insert picture - NOT from their local hard drive - but from photos I want them to choose from?

Is there a way to create a PDF form where a Reader user can insert an image - that's NOT on their local hard drive?
I have 4 photos available - the users of my form will choose one of them and insert it in the pdf form. The users will NOT have the photos saved on their local hard drives so ideally, they will see thumbnails or a preview of the available photos and then select and insert the photo they want to use.
Is this possible? If so, how do I go about this? Right now, all I can find are ways to insert a photo located on the users local hard drive.
Hopefully someone can answer my question.

George, I'm not sure where the photos would go or how to include them. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to making pdf forms so i'm not sure if it's even possible.
I'm planning to make a flier. I want the end user to be able to choose the photo displayed on the flier - the photos would be ones that I choose and supply. I know I could just make four different fliers, but I thought it would be more efficient if I had one flier and gave the Reader user the ability to select the photo they like.
Does this sound possible to you?

  • My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. It's worked fine since I got the iMac 4 years ago.`

My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I tried unplugging the cord that connects the HD to the iMac and plugging it back in, but I still get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" below which are buttons for Initialize, Ignore and Eject.  I was using a cord that went from larger square plug to larger square plug.  So then I tried one that went from smaller square plug to what I think is USB (thin rectangular plug) of the sort that connects the keyboard and mouse. It's the type that my printers and scanners use to connect to the iMac.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. It's worked fine since I got the iMac 4 years ago. What else can I try before just trying to initialize and

Thanks, Michael!  I do hear it at times spooling up and running. Just after I bumped the thread I looked for troubleshooting for this drive online and found the manual which suggested using Disk Utility which I've seen before accidentally (if I hit Command Shift U instead of Shift U to type "Unit" on a new folder for a student's homework ) but had never really noticed.   Disk Utility does see it and also a sub-something (directory?) which might be the Time Machine archives on the disk, called disk1s2), sort of the way that my iMac's hard drive shows up as 640.14 GB Nitachi HDT7... and has a sub-something titled DB iMac, which is what I named my iMac's hard drive.
Anyway the owner's manual just shows the image under the formatting section, not the troubleshooting section, but as soon as I saw it in the manual I remembered seeing it accidentally a few times, went to it, and am now verifying the disk.  Right now it's telling me that it will take 2 hours to complete the verification, so I guess I have a bigt of a wait.  :-)
Does that fact that Disk Utilities can see it mean it's not failed, or just that it hasn't completely failed?
I can see the virtue in having multiple redundant backups, or at least two backups. What do you suggest?  Two external hard drives?  I had this one linked by ethernet, and but I also have a cord that could link it by USB (like a printer), so if this one is reparable I could get a second one and link it by USB.  If this one is not reparable I could get two and do the same thing.  I do have an Airport so I suppose it's possible to get some sort of Wi-Fi hard drive (my new printer/scanner uses only the network and not a cable, although it has a cable that I used for the initial installation), but I'd suspect a Wi-Fi hard drive might have a higher price.
What hard drives, if any, do you recommend? I seem to recall that when I was looking at external hard drives 4 years ago, Apple's were substantially more expensive, which is why I got the OWC Mercury Elite All Pro.

  • Formatting HFS+ or NTFS hard drive

hello, i have an external hard drive (180gb) on which i would like to do 2 things. i would like to use part of it as my "Time Machine Backups" and i would also like to use it as a big portable hard drive that is able to be read on windows and mac. is there any possibility that i would be able to format this hard drive to a HFS+ or NTFS hard drive.
ps. i have MacFUSE ready to install on it if i can format it to NTFS. MacFUSE is a program that allows mac to read and write on a NTFS hd instead of just read it.

    Hello Brian
This may not be exactly what your looking for, but a 180GB HD seems a little small for both TM and for sharing files. Time Machine backups can easily grow to nearly twice the size of what's on your Internal HD and then you would need more space!
I would like to suggest formatting the 180GB drive FAT 32 and using it for backing up your music, photos and doc's files and for sharing between the iMac and PC.

Then taking into account your budget and amount of data currently on your iMac's HD pick up a second External HD strictly for Time Machine.

  • Why did lion stopped reading my external hard drives?

I have a MBP which used to work fine with snow leopard, had also Paragon's NTFS software to allow reading my external hard drives (Western Digital's My Passport and Passport Essential with about 2.5 TB worth of data, music, photos, etc.) I decided to upgrade to Lion and after that... poof! my hard drives will show grayed on the disk utility with the "not mounted" message and my MBP will not read the data, even though it can access them, run the WD utility, unlock the drive but... nothing.
Any ideas on how to fix? I event spent the morning yesterda wit the Geniuses at the Apple store and they were clueless too. I did show them on a couple of snow leopard machines my data but they could not understand how to explain he issue. I loaded the WD's drivers for Mac (OS  X Lion support as advertised on their website) but nothing happens.
Fortunately I can still read my data on any other computer (my kids MB's, my office Windows, etc) but it is truly dissapointing that Lion has brought down all the good stuff Mac / Apple had been known about.
    Any takers to this one?

Has the connection changed e.g. a different usb port?
You may need to allocate a permanent drive letter to the external hard drive.

  • Lion won't open iPhoto library on external NTFS Hard Drive.

Lion doesn't open the iPhoto library on my external NTFS Hard Drive. The caution window says: "The iPhoto Library is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have permission to make changes to it." This is weird because I have installed Paragon for MAC OS X v. 9.0.1 (Lion compatible) and Lion reads and writes files on the NTFS drive without any problem.
Before updating to Lion, Snow Leopard just worked fine with the same configuration.
I have tried to delete and tranfer again my iPhoto library to the external HDD, as well as creating an alias of the iPhoto library on my Mac internal HDD but nothing worked. Any ideas or solutions?

    I would caution you:
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.

  • Converting old windows ntfs hard drives to mac

    hello All
i hope that someone can help i have 3 old Ntfs hard drives, but my mac will not search thought them for files via spotlight, even though i have a program which allows the info to be read, peg something its called.
i want to convert the drives to mac, but is there a way to do which will keep the data on the drives and with out loosing the data or corupting it.
also i have a drive with window which i run boot camp and parallels, does that have to be nfts to work or can that be converted too?
    i hope some can help
    mike

Hi Mike and welcome to Discussions.
Spotlight can't index drives formatted to NTFS because OS X can't write on them (indexing involves writing on the drive) and so can't search them, but you can search them using EasyFind for instance because OS X can read NTFS volumes.
    http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/index.html
I believe with MacFuse you can add write capability to OS X for NTFS.
I'm wondering if you couldn't convert your NTFS drive (while connected to a PC) to FAT32 which is read/writeable by OS X. But note though that FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB, in case that matters to what you use the computer for. And _make sure_ you have a backup before attempting this. There are various ways of doing it it depending on the OS of the PC. I believe Partition Magic can do this, but Google around.
also i have a drive with window which i run boot camp and parallels, does that have to be nfts to work or can that be converted too?
What do you mean by this - is Windows installed on the drive using boot camp?

Oh, there is the rest of my Hard Drive. To allocate, I just right click and hit "New Partition" and follow the steps? Furthermore, do I need to make this an extended partition or primary? I am just going to use this larger partition for storing programs and games.
Also, my driver for my hard drive is 7 years old. Think I should update the driver?
"Also, my driver for my hard drive is 7 years old. Think I should update the driver?"
Nope, just install chipset drivers for your board.

    Yes

Extended. When its done right click and format the newest partition in NTFS.
