[SOLVED] System upgrade broke pm-resume (kernel problem?)

It now seems every other time I suspend to RAM, it fails to come back. I just get a blank screen, no backlight, with a completely unresponsive keyboard. At this point, the only thing I do that has any effect is a hard shutdown by holding down the power button. I had no problems before I upgraded on April 10. I didn't post this immediately because I wanted to see if the new xorg-server and associated updates would fix it, but it didn't.
Here is pm-suspend.log:
Initial commandline parameters:
Tue Apr 14 03:46:54 PDT 2009: Running hooks for suspend.

Hi there. Me here with the same problem. Well I think it to be so...
I can not suspend/resume for the second time - when I resume the backlight turns on, but the suspend LED is not turned off, HDD works, CPU, fans work. My computer is Thinkpad T43p. And older kernel does solve the problems.
I am considering one more issue about this problem is that the drivers may conflict with the newest kernel (for example my opensource ati drivers). Any suggestions?
By the way, if someone needs older packages, you can use 'Arch Rollback Machine' (ARM - http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=53665)

  • [Solved] system upgrade fails with util-linux/eject conflict

I backed everything up, then deleted the fontconfig links and updated fontconfig, which worked properly. Then I did "pacman -Syu" and got this:
    [root@myhost ~]# pacman -Syu
    :: Synchronizing package databases...
    core is up to date
    extra is up to date
    community is up to date
    multilib is up to date

    error: unresolvable package conflicts detected
error: failed to prepare transaction (conflicting dependencies)
:: util-linux and eject are in conflict
    [root@myhost ~]#
Looks like two distinct problems. Note that I already have the /lib thing taken care of (turning it into a link), in a previous update. The forum searches I have done about this issue did not yield much.

Hell, I thought that was upgrading frequently. One of the reasons I'm on linux is because I don't have to get upgrades every hour as on Windows. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I ran a hell of a lot longer on Puppy linux without upgrades. Also, I backup before every upgrade, and then have to fiddle with pacnew files and all the rest, so the result is burning half a day at least on upgrades. I sure don't want to increase the frequency of that.
Arch is a rolling release so it changes basically every day. Updating every week or two is perfectly fine, but updating every couple months brigs you at odds with what Arch is about.
One of the reasons you may not want to use Arch is when you don't want to or can't spend time on the updates.
PaulBx1 wrote:The choice of defaults should (in my opinion) be decided by the needs of the unsophisticated user (such as myself), of which there are many more than the other type. Sophisticated users can intelligently decide between "y" and "n" because they know what is going on. Unsophisticated users just cross their fingers and hope the defaults work for them.
Arch is for experienced users and pacman doesn't do e.g. cleaning up - that's left to the user. pacman can surely help with it: 'pacman 'Qdt'.
It may feel unintuitive, but that's how it is.

  • [SOLVED] Massive upgrade broke my system (invalid ELF header)

    Hi,
Today I decided to upgrade my system (last time i upgraded was 1 or 2 months ago), but now I can't login.
I use gdm and I tried to login in both KDE and Gnome, with the same error:
/usr/bin/ssh-agent: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libkafs.so.0: invalid ELF header
When I was upgrading my system I noticed the following error for the packages 'pango', 'gconf', 'zsh', 'ktorrent':
/sbin/ldconfig: /usr/lib/libotp.so is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start
/sbin/ldconfig: /usr/lib/libkasf.so is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start
/sbin/ldconfig: /usr/lib/libmp3lame.so is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start

/sbin/ldconfig: /usr/lib/libUil.so is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start
/sbin/ldconfig: /usr/lib/libQtDesignerComponents.so is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start
This error message is also coming when i use pacman.
Note that I have an another bug (maybe related to this one), I installed 'xsane' and 'libjpeg' (required by xsane), then I ran into lot of troubles: lot of applications didn't start (amarok, pgadmin, xsane...) so I had to ""fix"" this by symlinking libjpeg,62.
I hope we can solve this mess.
Tell me if you need more information

Well, there still a problem, with readline.
When I'm unable to use pacman nor to start postgres, i've got this error:
/bin/bash: error while loading shared libraries: libreadline.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I alreadey tried to re-install readline, but it did solve the problem.
    Any suggestion?
    Edit:

  • [Solved] Installed Arch, I have a kernel problem.

Hi guys, I'm new here, but I use only linux since 2003. I have a problem at boot... When I choose arch from the bootloader I get this:

That's very curious. I'm just having this problem after installing the lowlatency kernel from this repo:
    Server = http://arch.madfire.net/proaudio/i686
So I've just changed the initrd /boot/kernel26.img to /boot/kernel26rt.img and I'm getting exactly the same error. I've also tried changing sda with hda in the grub's menu.lst but nothing changed...

  • [SOLVED]System upgrade error

    Hi,
Trying to upgrade my whole system, using the command:
    pacman -Syu
as root, I got the following error:
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
    python2-twisted: /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/twisted/plugins/dropin.cache exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
Any idea to how to fix it?
Or is there something I had to do and forgot?
    thanks in advance!

The crashes occurred when I was in X and I got dumped to the console when the computer crashed but I still ahd the mouse cursor from X.
When I tried the magic sysrq REISUB combo, the cursor froze but the system didn't reboot.
    I have 'kernel.sysrq = 1' in my /etc/sysctl.conf.
    Any hints or ideas?
I'm running [testing] and I think the issues started when I updated to linux 3.3.4-1, which is now in [core].
I've found e.g. https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/4/20/347 but I've no idea how to proceed.

I have the same kind of problem. I have two machines and both have crashed since installing kernel 3.3.4-1 this morning.  I left one machine running X and came back to find myself in a console with that "unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000002" reported by Karol.  I can't find anything in my logs about that, but there was another crash later with the following in the kernel.log.

  • [SOLVED] Latest Upgrade Broke nm-applet/blueman-applet

I have just upgraded my system (eeepc 901/kdemod3). Nm-applet and blueman-applet no longer appear in my toolbar (but network manager and bluetooth still work).
When I run  them from a terminal, I get these error messages:
** (nm-applet:3436): WARNING **: Fallback icon 'gtk-dialog-error' missing: (0) Icon 'gtk-dialog-error' not present in theme
    ERROR:applet.c:2763:nma_icons_reload: assertion failed: (applet->fallback_icon)
    Aborted
    and
    Failed to load PowerManager
Icon 'gtk-missing-image' not present in theme
Obviously, some icons have been lost, or new ones are missing, but I have no idea where or how.
I would be very grateful for advice

  • Recent Kernel / udev 088 Upgrade Broke System

I just upgraded to the most recent kernel and udev 088. (Previously, I was using kernel 2.6.16 and the previous version of udev (udev 86 or 87).
After I rebooted, the latest kernel loaded fine. Modules also loaded. But my computer now hangs at Loading UDev Events.
This should not have happened for such a minor upgrade.  As mentioned previously I have been using 2.6.16  and udev.    I have filed a bug report - http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/4342
For some reason the latest upgrade broke the system.
Is there any way I can debug this?  (Since it is hanging, I do not know how)
How can I go bcak to the previous version of udev? (v 086 or 87?)
    Rob

Thanks.  Downgrading to udev 087 did not solve the problem.  I suspect the problem is related to the new kernel or the new pcmcia package.
I will try downgrading the pcmciautils program first.  If that does not work I will try downgrading the kernel.
How do I downgrade the kernel?  Do  downgrade kernel-sources first and the downgrade the kernel?
    Rob

first of all i have to say, that the machine where i installed Arch is pretty old (something around 5 years).
I already tried installing Arch two times and every time after i performed a system upgrade, i couldn't boot arch.
Before the upgrade i rebooted several times to ensure that its working with the brand new installation - it worked.
Here i'm the 3rd try. This time i configured packman to ignore the kernel package and voila its working now with kernel 2.6.25.6-1.
So, here is my question: Is there any problem that could appear later on if i never upgrade the kernel?
I'm quite new to linux and really appreciate your support.
    Regards
    Daniel

Well ... the kernel, like any other piece of program, from time to time has to be patched if they find a bug in it.
Never upgrading means that you do not get the benefit of security and improvements patches.
There is also the issue that some programs, a few, may want to have a certain kernel to run but I think that is less common.
I, for instance, have not upgraded the kernel for a few months now because it screws up my wifi.
If you can live with that then  you are OK.
    R.

  • [SOLVED] Laptop freezes at startup after kernel upgrade to 3.13.6

Some days ago I got a new Dell Sputnik 3 Laptop and installed Arch Linux with UEFI Boot and gummiboot as bootloader. The installation was successful.
However two days ago there was an upgrade for the Linux Kernel from 3.13.5 to 3.13.6. When I restarted the Laptop after the upgrade of the kernel the Laptop freezed directly after pushing the power button (never got ahead of the initial DELL logo).
I ran the DELL hardware diagnostics to identify a possible damage of the SSD but everything was ok. Than I booted into a live system ad mounted the root partition and there was no problem work on it. Additionally I change the value of timeout in gummiboots loader.conf (it was commented out before). Since than I got the gummiboot boot menu at least. So narrowing down, I think something happened during the kernel upgrade. Unfortunately I have no clue what could it be since I am convinced that at the installation process some days before I did everything like it was described at the beginners guide so automatic gummiboot update had to be possible.
The drive is partitioned in the live system looks like this (look at sda):
    ├─sda1 8:1 0 512M 0 part /boot
    └─sda2 8:2 0 235G 0 part /
    fstab like this:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    # /dev/sda2
    UUID=3f216fdb-f4c6-459a-856f-6f246d7a5bff / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # /dev/sda1
    UUID=0F8F-2A3B /boot vfat rw,relatime,fmask=0022,dmask=0022,codepage=437,iocharset=iso8859-1,shortname=mixed,errors=remount-ro 0 2
    # swap
    /swapfile none swap defaults 0 0
I have and arch.conf in gummiboot looking like this:
    title Arch Linux
    linux /vmlinuz-linux
    initrd /initramfs-linux.img
    options root=/dev/sda2 rw
and the loader.conf of gumiboot looking like this:
    timeout 5
    default 56cccedc29f1418ab2d8f1762ea09471-*
Now, I don't know anymore how to proceed to identify the problem and hopefully solve it

looks like this issue might be the same:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=172961&p=1
If I find time I might try using an alternative to gummiboot to see if this works.
Update: There also seems to be a reopened bug report on this https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/33745

  • [SOLVED]Problematic upgrade to newest kernel 3.10.5-1

Aloha, guys. I've just had a miserably failed upgrade to the latest kernel, probably due to something I had misconfigured and hadn't noticed before.
I was running 3.10 already perfectly before this last update to 3.10.5-1 (x86_64), but as soon as I rebooted after upgrading to the brand spanking new kernel, I got the fsck warning other people mentioned around this forum - corrected already in my syslinux.cfg by replacing ro with rw in the append line.
Both with ro and rw in the append line the boot process hangs (afterall, that fsck warning wouldn't stop the laptop from booting). The problem I'm having is that udev is not starting, meaning that boot hangs with lots of failed udev warnings.
The first one that comes up is "Failed to start udev Coldplug all Devices", and "Failed to start udev Kernel Device Manager" from then on until the boot process just hangs.
I've chrooted and tried rebuilding the initramfs, but it's giving me an "invalid kernel specified: 'boot/vmlinuz-linux'" error.
Right now I'm totally at a loss, as I cannot even begin to troubleshoot it any further. I hadn't kept the older kernel pkg in order to downgrade, but would like to try correcting this before eventually downgrading - as that just temporarily solves my problem.
My mkinitcpio hooks were "base udev autodetect modconf block filesystems keyboard fsck" and I've never had any previous problems with my initramfs. I know I may be missing something basic, or some further information needed to troubleshoot it, so please, please, please, just let me know and I will provide it here.
Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

This must be something specific about your system - I have three machines running without any problem with kernel 3.10.5-1 - one uses the latest grub 2.00.5086-1, and the other two boot with rEFInd. All three boot fine and are stable.
Did you have any customisation in your mikinitcpio.conf or kernel parameters during boot?
In case it is of interest here is the output in my pacman log for the kernel update section:

  • Upgrade broke complete system

The 2.6.32 kernel-headers update (I think) broke my whole system, I can neither load the kernel image nor chroot in the system from a live cd (!). I get always the same error:
Too many levels of symbolic links
(e.g. "chroot: cannot run command '/bin/bash': Too many levels of symbolic links")
Something probably went wrong at the upgrade. If trying to reinstall kernel-headers 2.6.32.1 or kernel26 2.6.31.5 (is it right that those packages have different version numbers in the repro?) with the "-r /mnt" swich (instead of chrooting) I get the following
    error:
    command failed to execute correctly
for at least some of the packages (it doesn't get logged anywhere). Downgrading to kernel-headers 2.6.31 complains about dependency issues (glibc).
This is my pacman.log of the last upgrade (nothing special as far as I can see):
    http://pastebin.com/m365c5914
I couldn't reboot or login as a different user. Had to do a hard reset. This is my error.log:
    Dec 20 13:29:30 arch gdm-binary[5099]: ERROR: gdm_slave_exec_script: Ausführen gescheitert: /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default
Dec 20 13:29:32 arch agetty[1765]: tty1: can't exec /bin/login: Too many levels of symbolic links
Dec 20 13:30:20 arch acpid: execl(): Too many levels of symbolic links
    Any help please?

R00KIE wrote:Did you update glibc too? And for any reason did you change /lib64 to be a link to /lib ?
Thank you, you hit the bulls-eye! I really did link lib64 to lib about a year ago, because I had to use some obscure proprietary 64-Bit driver looking for all libs in /lib64. Don't know why it didn't cause any problems up to now.
    pacman -r /mnt -S kernel-headers kernel26
with the Arch system mounted to /mnt fixed the problem (after reverting the link of course).

  • [SOLVED] System fails to boot after upgrade.

Not exactly sure what happened as the upgrade appeared to go smoothly. Now trying to start just causes an endless cycle of rebooting. I have been unable to even boot into single user mode. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated here.
Using the livecd I can mount all the filesystems, and I have run fsck on all of them so I know they are clean. Here are my grub entries:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title Arch Linux
    root (hd0,1)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/569a7fe5-7452-4064-adc1-71b6b2b58b0b resume=/dev/sda7 ro vga=773 elevator=deadline
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
    # (1) Arch Linux
    title Arch Linux Fallback
    root (hd0,1)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/569a7fe5-7452-4064-adc1-71b6b2b58b0b ro vga=773
    initrd /boot/kernel26-fallback.img
I have tried using a kernel line of just:
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda2 ro
and get the same results, as soon as grub starts to load the kernel the system reboots and I can't see what's on screen long enough to know what's happening.

That does appear to be my issue, I use jfs with no separate /boot
    Edit:
    The following steps fixed it:
Mount your / (and /boot partition into this mount) from your Ach system, ex:
    sda2 (/) -> /mnt/arch
    sda1 (/boot)(if you have a own /boot) -> /mnt/arch/boot
    Do a chroot /mnt
    and therein a:
    pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel26-2.6.30.1-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz (or i686)
further details at the link above.
