(SOLVED) Taskbar thumbnail preview disappears quickly

I have windows 7 RC on my laptop, Dell 1501.
When I start one or more programs from the taskbar and hover my mouse pointer on them I can see thumbnail previews.
The problem is that thumbnail previews disappear too quickly even though my mouse pointer is still on the opened program in taskbar.
I have to move my mouse so I can get another quick preview.
I notice that if I click on an empty space on the taskbar with the left mouse button, and then point to an opened program the thumbnail preview stays for as long as my mouse pointer is on the program.
Does anybody have that problem?
EDIT:
I notice something else,
if I open regedit or computer management and one of them is active, all other opened programs on the taskbar have long thumbnail preview.
But if for example windows explorer is the active window on taskbar, thumbnail previews stay for a short time.
SOLUTION: dell 1501 specific and may be bios version
1. shut down the laptop
2. remove the power supply and the battery
3. press and hold the power button (I pressed it 2-3 times and kept it pressed for about 1 second) --- obviously the laptop will not start.
4. plug in the battery and the power supply, start the laptop and check if the problem is gone.

teeqeela: "I can't believe it! Same dell, same problem, same solution. Thanks man!"
If that was for me, my pleasure.
Noel Carboni: "I'd be curious to know whether you've found the reason it was happening"
I'm curious about the reason, but not prepared to spend the time to find it; I don't think we'd learn enough from it to justify the time. Back pre-Windows pre-Internet I spent weeks painfully debugging. It's
hugely more complicated now, the Internet finds most things quickly anyway, and the tedious tracing doesn't bring many useful insights. I can't give answers, I'll just repeat the facts - any proposed answer must address them. Some details in the numbered points
I made a few messages back. The problem first manifested (for me, and I believe for others) some months after installing Win7 on Inspiron 1501 (specifically that machine). It's cleared by removing all power, and by a couple of software tricks (disable gadgets,
registry hack). Once cleared by power removal, it stays clear for weeks (not months) then recurs (don't yet know how permanent other fixes will turn out to be). One thinks of things such as some bit in system memory that gets set somehow, and never reset until
power is removed (it might be a memory location always alive and watching for a wake-on-lan or other wakeup event), which Win8 expects to find reset. But why the month's delay? Win7 (32- and 64-bit) works fine on Inspiron 1501, but is not officially supported,
and some non-Dell drivers must be used; they work fine. I could go on till the cows come home, but I've got myself a usable machine, and told others about it, so that's it.

• Thumbnail Previews keep re-resolving

Hi,
When I'm in the Library module, each time I page down (or up), I have to wait a second or two for the thumbnails to resolve. How do I get all the thumbnail previews to resolve and stay that way so I can page through them quickly?
Thanks,
AJ

This is exactly the problem. How can this be "by design"? There's an option to render all Preview images at 1:1 during import. Why doesn't this render all the Thumbnails too?
The previews and thumbs are rendered, but the thumbnails are initially shown fuzzy to denote that Lr is working in the background to check that they're still fresh (i.e. up to date). You'll likely see 3 white dots on top right corner of thumbs at the same time which denotes that Lr checking that the metadata is up to date. These can take a little while to disappear. Usually, the fuzzy thumb is only present when you scroll the thumbs into the content window for the first time after starting Lr.
It's incredibly annoying to have to pause on each page of preview images while they resolve when trying to browse through hundreds of images quickly.
Yes it's annoying and yes folk have complained about it before, but neither changes the fact that what you are seeing is by design. Whether it continues to be is another matter.

• Large thumbnail previews in Finder?

Is there any way I can select LARGE thumbnail previews for images on my hard drives in the 'Finder' window? I.e. like in Windows Explorer; where you can actually see the image? I have 1000's of photos, & if I'm searching for a specific image I really need to be able to see the thumbnail clearly or it will take me hours to find the photo I'm looking for. At the moment they are tiny-weeny & I can't see anything at all of the image.Thanks.

I thought this had solved this problem, but unfortunately, this does not work when I'm trying to attach images to an e-mail. I open 'attachments' in Hotmail, & it brings up the Finder window, but of course the menu bar at the top is not the Finder menu - it's the Google Chrome/Firefox menu bar (or whatever browser I'm using). So there is no option to 'show status bar'. This is actually incredibly annoying, as when the thumbnails are tiny & I'm trying to selct from a large number of photos, it's very hard to see which ones I wanted to send. I end up having to write down all the image numbers first. This cannot surely be how a Mac is supposed to work in the 21st century?..!
I would be very grateful for any other ideas...

• No thumbnails/preview in Nautilus for files in a smb shared folder.

Hi,
This is a problem I have tried to solve for more than a year by posting in forums, trial and error and a lot of Google searches. For my work I have to look through large folders on a smb share with movie files. I need thumbnails/preview to be able to work efficiently. On Ubuntu and other deb based distros I have thumbnails/preview in Nautilus just by setting it in the Naurilus preferences for networked folders. Not so on Arch (and Antergos). I do have thumbnails/preview for local files, but regardless of what I do not for the smb shared folders. I have of course configured Nautilus to preview all files.
I can see that there are generated failed thumbnails in ~/.cache/thumbnails/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory, so for some reason they are not generated correctly for the movie files in the smb shared folder on Arch. I have tried to install ffmpegthumbnailer and tons of other methods I have found in the forums and elsewhere, but I have not been able to get it to work. And again, on Ubuntu it works out of the box so it's not like there's a bug in Nautilus preventing thumbnails for files on a network share.
I'm running GNOME as my DE, but it doesn't seem to matter which DE I run as long as Nautilus or Nemo is the file manager.
I do not expect a solution, but one can always hope!

I had a similar issue, and it turns out nautilus was using ffmpegthumbnailer instead of totem-video-thumbnailer.
And ffmpegthumbnailer doesn't seem to work with files on "smb://...". It was generating empty pngs.
Do you have totem installed et does this create an image ?
totem-video-thumbnailer "smb://videoserver/pathtovideofile/videofile" test.png
Did you try to uninstall ffmpegthumbnailer or video thumbnailers other than totem ?

• Thumbnail/ Preview Question

I have used Aperture since the start.... but i am getting a strange behaviour with thumbnails/previews.... imported raw files from a Canon 1DS MK2 in to a new project. Activity monitor shows the processing of the files (1,146) i am then getting previews that look faded.... until i turn off 'Quick Preview' and it will load the properly saturated preview. I have rebuilt the thumbnails and reprocessed a few times..... and when this has finished there are still a mixture of good previews and faded previews. Makes it very hard to edit properly.
I am using a referenced project with the images stored on an external FW800 drive.
Any ideas ?
Thanks.

Maybe it isn't the smartest way, but this should work:

... call info.Parse (host, stream) etc here - the usual stuff
{
// find biggest jpeg image for preview
unsigned int subMaxW=0;
int subMaxI=-1;
for(unsigned int i=0;i<info.fIFDCount;i++)
{
dng_ifd* pIFD=info.fIFD[i].Get();
if (ccJPEG==pIFD->fCompression && 1==pIFD->fNewSubFileType)
{
if (pIFD->fImageWidth>subMaxW)
{
subMaxW=pIFD->fImageWidth;
subMaxI=i;
}
}
}
if (subMaxI>=0) // load desired jpeg preview
{
unsigned int i=subMaxI;

dng_ifd* pIFD=info.fIFD[i].Get();
if (ccJPEG==pIFD->fCompression && 1==pIFD->fNewSubFileType)
{
// seek to pIFD->fTileOffset[0] and load jpeg
}
}
}

• Nef thumbnail preview on Mountain Lion

Does anybody else have thumbnail preview problems with Nef Raw files on Mountain Lion? (Raw files taken from a Nikon D800)
Preview images seem to be really low res, it's really annoying as I use the coverflow to quickly preview files before working on them
I've recently done a system update & this hasn't cured the problem! Would really appreciate any advise if anybody knows a fix to this.
Cheers

Can you post the crash log?

• PS CS6 Win7 taskbar thumbnails and peek images blank

Most the the Creative Suite misbehaves with respect to the Windows 7 taskbar. One behavior that's particularly unproductive is seeing a bunch of gray icons for open application windows, and having the associated full size peek image grayed out too. I frequently work with many open image windows that I prefer to keep undocked. If they're minimized, more often than not there's a gray taskbar preview.
Screen capture example attached.
Once I click on the thumbnail and activate a window, the thumbnail taskbar image updates. But when I switch between applications, the updated thumbnails will usually go blank next time I peek at the PS6 taskbar.

I'm not seeing misbehavior, in that I appear to be getting all the thumbnails, but interestingly I'm not seeing the titles in the Taskbar Live Previews like you are. Maybe it's because I have the Taskbar set to show buttons with the names in them... I can also see the document title if I hover over the icon.
Regarding why you would be failing to see the document images... Seems quite likely that would be a display driver issue. What video card and driver version do you have?
Sorry if we discussed these details before; I recognize your username though I don't recall what we discussed in other threads.

• THUMBNAIL PREVIEWS

I THINK THAT I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH FINDER OR QUICKLOOK.
I CANNOT SEE PREVIEWS (THUMBNAILS ICONS) OF FILES OTHER THAN MY DESKTOP.
WHEN I CREATE A FOLDER TO PUT THE THUMBNAIL IN THEN THE PREVIEW RETURNS BACK TO ITS GENERIC LOOK
(I.E. Illustrator files look orange whereas before i moved to the folder I could see their thumbnail preview - what the file looked lik without having to open it)
i recently started using a great plug in called SNEAKPEEK PRO where it lets me preview the file in quick mode and giving me all sorts of other info
The problem though is the small thumbnail previews
ANY WORDS OF ADVICE??????
Thank you so much

Hi Kapil,
Have you checked that layout service repository is enalble in the repository ?

This service is used to store and manage layout profiles and to display thumbnail views of the various layout profiles.
Also, you must have service permission in the folder where you need to active this layout.

• Finder thumbnail previews stop displaying after a bit.

My co-worker and I both have 27" iMacs running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. We have tons of image files (many are .eps) that we go though to grab clip art from during the day. We generally rely on looking at the preview of these, however the thumbnail preview in icon view stops displaying images after looking scrolling through for a bit. I usually can't generate any more thumbnail previews after about a third of my work day is over, making it difficult to see which images to choose. Quick Look still works though. Any ideas? (And yes, I do have "Show Icon Preview" checked in the finder's view options.)

Best I can think of is that some cache is filling up, or getting so large Finder is having difficulty managing it.
You might run Disk Utility to see if there's any problems with the hard drive.
Are both Macs doing this? Do they have separate hard drives for these files, or are you sharing a drive, like a network drive?
How full is the hard drive?
I tried opening and closing folder after folder of image files (ones with thumbnails) while Activity Monitor was up and running, and Finder uses more and more memory the more folders I opened; closing them did not fully return the memory usage to a pre-opening level. Seemed to be a steady growth in Finder's memory usage as more and more such folders were opened and closed.

• Thumbnail Photos Disappear

Why are my Z10 thumbnail photos disappearing? This came out of nowhere. Anything I can do to correct the problem?

Hi legacymusic,
If you edit a photo as tahabashir1991suggested does the thumbnail appear?
Another option is to backup the files to a PC using mass storage mode and then try reformatting the media card and restore the files back to the media card after it is reformatted.
How to Enable USB mass storage on the BlackBerry 10 smartphone:
1. From the home screen, swipe down and tap Settings > Storage and Access.
2. Scroll to the bottom and turn on USB Mass Storage
Once Mass storage mode is enabled connect the Blackberry smartphone to a PC and save the files to the PC and reformat the card, How format media card:
1. Go to Settings.
2. Select Storage and Access.
3. Format Media Card.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks.

• Thumbnails preview bug

Hi, anybody found a solution to this annoying problem yet?
Mike

I was referring to the thumbnails/preview image mismatch issue which is troubling so many people. By the way, I think I have stumbled on a solution (for me at least).
I started Aperture when holding on to the CMD and Option buttons, I clicked on 'Rebuild Now' to rebuild the Aperture library but instead of rectifying the problem it actually got worse. And in my desperation to rid the problem I started Aperture the same way and clicked on 'Consistency Check' instead (which require your admin password). When Aperture open up this time, all the thumbnails were properly displayed! No more mismatched images. I was skeptical initially and thought the problem must surely return after I reopen Aperture. So, after all thumbnails were generated, I restarted Aperture and lo and behold, the problem is truly gone!
I don't know how the problem was rectified. All I know is what I did solved the problem for me. So if you're desperate, you might want to keep your fingers crossed and do what I did.

• Acrobat Pro 9 - Disable thumbnail preview in PDF file icons on Desktop

After upgrading to Acrobat Pro 9, the file icons of PDF files on my Windows 7 desktop changed to showing a thumbnail preview. I want to get the standard PDF file icon back for all PDF files. Can someone please tell me how?
Thanks.

Did you ever find an answer for this??? I had the same issue and was searching for an answer. I saw this and since I fixed mine I thought I would tell you what I did. Also, in case someone else finds this and needs an answer.
Opened Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options
Go to the View tab
Check "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
Hit Apply
All your PDF files on your desktop should now show with the generic PDF icon.
Reverse this to get the preview icon "thumbnails".

• All the images in my Speed Dial thumbnails have disappeared and I can't get them back.

All the images in my Speed Dial thumbnails have disappeared and I can't get them back. When I check the settings all the thumbnails have the site shown in the details so should be showing the site in the thumbnail, but they're just blank. I uninstalled Speed Dial and installed it again, but to no avail. Something is stopping the image appearing but don't know what. I paused blocking on Ghostery, but that makes no difference. Any suggestions would be welcome!

• Display thumbnail preview for images in a Document Set

I have a Document Set with Images in it. I would like to show a thumbnail preview of the images in the view of the files in the document library. I added the Thumbnail Preview column but it just shows a large File Icon.

Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to display the picture of the images in the document set.
I recommend to create a hyperlink type column and format URL as picture to show the images in documents set.
Thanks,
