[SOLVED] Update GNOME 3.16 (testing) to 3.16.1 (extra) and can't login

I no longer have any testing package, but when gdm starts I get a blinking mouse pointer (it blinks 5 times) and then I get the gdm screen but without any user list. If I open the menus (date menu, the shutdown menu, ...) I can see they leave a "trace" when closed (they remain visibile although a bit blurred, as if the closing animation didn't finish).
I also get these in dmesg:
[...] gdm segfault at ...
[...] gnome-shell segfault at 18 ip ...
[...] gdm segfault at ...
(Typing from cellphone)
BTW shouldn't extra be "stabler" than testing?

I just tried uncommenting #EnableWayland=false in /etc/gdm/custom.conf and I can confirm that this does not resolve the problem. I am running the nvidia proprietary driver with the lts kernel, but I have also tested this on the latest kernel and had the same results.
EDIT: It appears gdm and libgdm just got patched a moment ago. I will try upgrading and see what happens.
EDIT2: I can confirm that the problem is now resolved after upgrades to gdm libgdm and mutter

  • [Solved] Update gnome results to hang in gdm

I guess this what happens when waiting a long time to update. This laptop has arch and linux mint dual booting. Arch is running on gnome and i think the last time I used it was 2 weeks ago (or more). It boots fine from grub but hangs upon reaching gdm. Keys dont work nor the touchpad. I have to remove the battery to restart it. This is my second laptop running arch. I got used to the other one running kde then I realize have to update the gnome laptop. Please help.
    This is error log.

  • Problem with itunes update.  I am running OSX v 10.4.11 and can't get itunes to update.  I had itunes 9.1.1 and when I tried ask it to update it said there was no update. sent old itunes to trash and now apple site itunes download is not working.  help...

From Apple website when I go to itunes update to 10.3 I am not seeing the left column to download itunes 10.3.  Does anyone else have this problem?  I tried yesterday as well.  Today, I threw my itunes 9.1.1 in the trash and emptied it... and then rebooted.  What am I doing wrong?

What operating system are you running?  I doubt it's an iPhone OS on a Mac Mini, but if you meant to choose 10.4 then you're out of luck.  http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/  At the bottom of the left hand column on this page, you'll see it requires OS X 10.5 or higher.

I am so done with this crappy updating, first it was that I could no longer keep on my wifi for more than a few minutes coz it cuts off continuously and now I can no longer send pics with my iMessage. Going to switch to another brand. It's overpriced and its giving me lots of headaches

  • My partner updated to IOS 5 last night on his iPhone 4 and can no longer pick up any wifi signal and phone signal is dire in areas where he had no problem before... anyone having similar issues??

After updating to IOS 5 on an iPhone 4 can no longer get wifi in my home and phone signal is terrible and drops out taking up to 10 mins to re-appear... anyone else having these sort of problems??

I am having similar problems on my new iPhone 4S
My mac gets good wifi connection in the same location. I measured the signal strength -- something like -77db signal vs. -90db noise.
But my iPhone WiFi keeps cutting in and out. In fact, I left my phone on last night to update various apps over WiFi. When I checked it this a.m. I had received several warning messages from AT&T that I was nearing my 3G data limit. I looked at my phone and it had consumed nearly 100mb of cellular data overnight, when it should have been connected over WiFi.
Needless to say, it's taken some of the thrill away from my new iPhone...

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

  • Since last update, my iPad has a distorted sound is this normal, and can it be fixed.  It sounds like my speakers are busted

Has anyone else had problems with the sound coming out of their iPad since the last up date?  Very annoying and distorted.

Other have had issues. They've reported some success by going into the settings and 'reset all settings'

  • [SOLVED] update removed menu items in lxpanel menu & in gnome-panel

when i start gnome-panel, the 'applications' drop down is empty, and 'system' no longer contains the 'administration' and 'preferences' items.
in lxpanel, the menu only shows 'run' and 'logout'.
i wanted to see if alacarte still showed things, so i ran alacarte from a terminal (which normally works)...
    [chris: ~]$ alacarte

    parser.Parse("", True)
xml.parsers.expat.ExpatError: no element found: line 1, column 0
naturally, starting alacarte by right clicking on gnome-menu -> edit menus also does nothing.
i looked at /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/Alacarte/MainWindow.py with cat, and there is nothing super-obviously wrong with the script.
    also:
    [chris: ~]$ ls /usr/share/applications
    abiword.desktop
    alacarte.desktop
    aldm-gui.desktop
    assistant.desktop
    at-properties.desktop
    avahi-discover.desktop
    banshee-1-audiocd.desktop
    banshee-1.desktop
    banshee-1-media-player.desktop
    baobab.desktop
    *and so on*
    so those didn't vanish.
    any ideas?

so i saw this error message....
** (gnome-panel:4408): WARNING **: Error loading menu layout from "/home/chris/.config/menus/settings.menu": Error on line 1 char 1: Document was empty or contained only whitespace
the file was empty. and what do we do with broken config files in ~? why, we hide them, of course!
    [chris: ~/.config/menus]$ mv settings.menu settings.menubackup
now gnome-panel works, but alacarte (menu editor) and lxpanel's menu is still busted.
now that i am getting somewhere, im gonna keep posting as i trace this down so others that may come across this same issue can benefit.
edit: renamed ~/.config/menus/lxde-applications.menu to .menubackup and restarted lxpanel, it works now.
    edit2:
    alacarte is giving me this...
IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/chris/.config/menus/applications.menu'
and sure enough, pcmanfm told me that the file belonged to root.
sudo pcmanfm, navigated to that file, right click -> properties -> permissions -> changed owner to chris and group to users.
    alacarte works now, too.
i think im going to go through and recursively make everything in each ~ folder belong to the username it should just in case permissions got jumbled somewhere/anywhere else.
just so i know: did this happen to anyone else that updated within the last 24 hours or so?
(so i can learn if it was something *I* did, or if it was something that came with the *update*)

  • [solved] Preferred way to install & update Gnome extensions

    Hello there,
What is the preferred way to install and update Gnome extensions?
    Do you
    a) install the respective extensions from the AUR
    b) or do you use the https://extensions.gnome.org/local/ page for that purpose?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of both ways?
    Thanks!

Thaodan wrote:Why add an extra interface if your package manager already does the job?
Because if you use the AUR, you depend on the respective maintainers to update their PKGBUILD when a newer version is out. If they don't update, you will not receive a notification that a newer version of your extension is available.
With extensions.gnome.org/local, you do not depend on anyone else. It has no harm to your system to manage extensions like this; they get installed for just your user (in $HOME/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions).
I know which method I prefer.
Hmm true, despite the bad effects of using the AUR prefer to use it cause I don't like to add extra interfaces for every app. But I think that is just an opinion...

  • Xorg 1.8 update, gnome seg fault

I just recently updated to Xorg1.8 and followed the respective wiki's and things went rather well, err... so I thought.  When I finally tested Xorg by running 'startx' gnome fires right up and shows me the desktop just long enough to tease me and then closes it.  Below I have linked to my Xorg.conf (which I am not sure its relevance for v1.8),  and my Xorg.0.log (crash report).
In normal circumstances I would just downgrade the package and deal with it however I have been experiencing random system freezes that seem to be linked to a Xorg bug('s)as well and was hoping to see if the 1.8 upgrade might settle this problem.  I dont generally get into this realm but not being able to fix this might be a deal breaker for me and Arch on this machine which really stinks cuz for the small while I have used it I have really taken a liking to it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if its to tell me to rftm or call me a d-bag, I am still trying to work through this and can reproduce this error rather easily, as well will provide any further information requested in a timely manner.

    Thank you.

    Okay, sorry about the delay I had to run out for a bit.  So I went ahead and included the FIlES portion to mkinitcpio and regenerated the initramfs.  Here is the output now of the previous commands;
    grep modeset /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
    options i915 modeset=1
    sudo cat /sys/module/i915/parameters/modeset
    1
    zgrep -i kms /proc/config.gz
    CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER=m
    CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS=y
    CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS=y
To answer your question yes this is a fully upgraded system and currently using xorg-server 1.8.1.902-1.  I still have the same result unfortunately and have pasted a newer Xorg.0.log here; http://paste.pocoo.org/show/234824
Edit:  So, heres something interesting.  When I remove xorg.conf it does not yell about anything aside from not finding synaptics hardware;  http://paste.pocoo.org/show/234828

  • After recent updates, Gnome freezes randomly. Video problem?

I've been having some problems lately that I didn't have before recent updates.
My desktop will freeze randomly and my only option is to switch to a VT and enter multi-user mode with `systemctl isolate multi-user.service`. X doesn't crash though. My Gnome Desktop just freezes entirely, but the mouse pointer continues to move around just fine. When I enter multi-user mode, Xorg.0.log says that the server exited successfully.
Below are error messages in dmesg, systemd journal, and Xorg.0.log.
    # dmesg | grep -i error

Any idea what might be causing these freezes or what info I can further provide?
EDIT: Processes in X are apparently not crashing, only the video output is. For example, if I'm running applications with sound, I continue hearing sound though the graphics are completely frozen. Is there a way to refresh the graphics or video card somehow?

I think i got my problem, but i don't know how to solve it: after much troubles i found out that whenever i have an SMB connection with a machine that then goes down/disconnect from network without me unmounting the share BEFORE it, then BOOM, everything freeze.
I noticed this only because i was sharing a directory with my brother and noticed i had the froze as soon as he got disconnected from the network: so i asked him to power on that machine and.. magic! My machine unfroze instantly!
But now, how to fix that?! Is it due to my /etc/fstab? Does this really matter with nemo/nautilus mounted shares? This, however, depicts the machine in question (the one that, disconnecting from the network, caused my own to freeze)
    //themachine.local/shared /home/username/mountpoint/ cifs noauto,guest,username=myname,password=mypassword,uid=1000,gid=100 0 0
At last I found out what's my problem, hopefully your situation is similar so that we can work out a solution on this one.
THANKS! I'm quite sure this is the reason gnome shell freezes for me as well. I was mounting my box.com cloud with this entry in /etc/fstab:
    # box.com account
    https://www.box.com/dav /home/abtz/Box davfs rw,user,noauto 0 0
If anyone has an idea for how to fix this, I'm all ears. For now, I'll just remove the entry from /etc/fstab.
I'm running vanilla Gnome, with only the Frippery shutdown menu and battery remaining extensions installed.

  • I SOLVED UPDATER AND ITUNES PROB

Ight what you have to do is uninstall any itunes and ipod updater progams then restart pc. then simply install ipod disc again and it should work now hear me out ITS NOT ITUNES FIVE PUT THAT IN RECYCLE BIN. it worked for me. you think you dont have your playlist well you goto file
    Add folder to library. then
    itunes link then
    itunes music link
    and its all there
but its a long process to put all songs on
    -Mock

Alright, I've just done the the what is apperantly Apple's "Final Solution" to all iPod problems, the reformat of my iPod using my mom's computer. What this proved is:
    A. My USB cable works fine.
    B. My iPod is perfectly okay, since iTunes recognized it on her computer.
So the problem has got to lie with the PC (go figure). And I suppose that, while this would eliminate the responsibility of Apple to offer any help to people experiencing this issue, it is still really lame of Appleto not even bother to point us in a general direction to where we could find help.
My next step is a full reformat of my PC, since it used to work on here. Also, an extra bit of info; this whole "ipod not being detected by itunes" problem popped up when I installed a scanner to my computer. This was a few months back before I had to send the thing in to get repaired. So what I did after I installed the scanner was a system restore to before I installed all of the scanner software, and my iPod worked again. I later tried installing the scanner again, and I had the same problem. Except that time, instead of the computer not detecting my iPod, it practically murdered my iPod forcing me to send it in.
My theory at this point is that something in the scanner drivers interfered with my iPod, even though that doesn't really make any sense, it doesn't seem coincidental.
Since I was away from my computer and iPod for a month I wasn't able to system restore back that far again, so I tried uninstalling my scanner software and WIA driver. This hasn't helped one bit.
Anyways, maybe you guys should test you iPods on other computers, and if they work, try to remember if you installed anything the day they stopped working to see if we can find any actual links.

  • Can't login after fresh installing gnome using gdm 3.2 [SOLVED]

I don't know if this topic was already solved, I hope someone can help me about this. I have a fresh install of arch linux (just yesterday) and installed gnome and gnome-extra packages. As usual, I go with the procedure of editing my .xinitrc (exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session), rc.conf (...dbus networkmanager...), inittab (runlvl 5, x:5......gdm). After a reboot, gdm screen appeared, I can't find my account, then there were two choices, "Sign in" and "Not listed..."). I clicked Not listed, then entered my user and password, after that, it responded: Authentication failure/failed... or something like that. I tried it again and it's the same. Temporarily, I'm using startx or slim (depends on my mood). Can anyone help me?
    here's my gdm's 0.log and 0-greeter.log respectively:
