[SOLVED] X not quite right (resolution, driver, color depth)

I am followed the instructions in the Beginner's Guide, and I am quite happy with my system. However although I am certain I installed the open Radeon driver, any time I enable it, X just gives me a blank screen. If I can ctrl-alt-backspace out of it, the screen is really dim and I can barely read it. So I am stuck with the Vesa driver. As I understand it, Vesa doesn't support my monitor's native resolution of 1680x1050. The highest I have been able to get is 1280x1024. Also I would like to use 32-bit color if I could, but that is not as important.
Below is my xorg.conf as it currently stands. I used hwd to generate it. Actually hwd generated two xorg.conf files (xorg.conf.radeon and xorg.conf.vesa). The radeon file never worked, but the vesa version did work right away, so that's the one I started to tweak.

Thanks for helping me with this. By the way does Compiz Fusion support the Vesa driver?

How can i fix this is it possible?
ps;on my .xinitrc i have this 2 times what of them is the right? or are both the same?

Thanks for the replies. I don't have an xorg.conf file. I tried one (generated by Xorg -configure) in my attempts to fix the problem, but I deleted it when I didn't work.
I'm not at home right now, so I can't get the exact output from xrandr, but I know it showed that the resolution was 1024x768.
When I first installed the system I thought that I needed the xf86-video-s3 driver, but that didn't work (X just ignored it and used vesa) so after a bit of research I found that the driver I needed was xf86-video-savage, which, as you can see from the log file, it is using.
karol, I'll try your suggestion of the UseBIOS option when I get home. The problem in your link looks exactly like mine!

  • MacBook Pro 15" with extra display not showing right resolution

I have a MacBook pro 15" that I got just the other day and I hooked it up to a Dell monitor thats native resolution is 1440 x 900 but it doesn't show up in resolutions in preferences. Kinda annoying.

    Hi BSteely,
I was wishing to receive a reply from you, since I saw you solved many problems on the forums, thank you
I got it working just sometime back. It was very strange, I messed around with the Color profiles, selected ProPhoto RGB and it suddenly added a new resolution entry under Displays. Although both are identical, if I select the second 1920 x 1080 of the two (see : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/828053/Picture%201.png), it still gets me back to the scaled screen. If I select the first one, it works fine. I still don't understand what could have triggered this.
Also, any JPEG picture seemed to be really messed up on the screen shortly after I fixed it. Red & oranges were way out. I calibrated the display and things started to look better. But there was one strange thing I discovered, in the dashboard, the color of the widgets remained unchanged (and "dirty") even after calibration. Only if I added the same widget afresh, it would change !
    Here's a comparison of the calculator : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/828053/Picture%202.png.
    Thanks a lot.

  • Apple TV not quite right, restarts needed often - are they all this way?

I have a 40GB Apple TV that I keep in 'Sync' mode with my Mac Pro iTunes library. Most of the time, about 65%, the Apple TV works just fine. But the other times here are the odd and random issues I get:
    • When buying TV Shows or movies I get an "Accessing iTunes Store" that just sits there spinning forever. A restart often solves the issue, and sometimes after the restart the "Ready to Play" dialog box pops up first thing.
    • After waking the Apple TV after a day of inactivity, I will go to play an encoded movie (that is coming from the Mac Pro) and Apple TV will say "File type not supported" or something like that. Waiting 5 minutes, or restarting, fixes the issue and the very same movie file plays fine.
    • Though mine is set to 'sync' within iTunes, this still allows me to play movies and music via 'streaming'. But this is very inconsistent. Sometimes streaming will be very fast and movie playback (even HD) will start immediately. Other times it will take FOREVER to begin movie playback - the progress bar loads but literally moves about 10% per minute.
    • Why are some TV shows there right away, and others not at all? For instance, Modern Marvels : "new" shows playing on TV are picked up my DVR, but they don't ever seem to show up on iTunes?
Any thoughts on the above issues are GREATLY appreciated... I've had this awhile and it's really been a lot of headache so far.

Yes, I changed the channel to 6 (as was recommended in another post) and restarted everything. Worked fine (as usual) for a couple days. Went to get a couple new shows and it did the same "Accessing iTunes" message again - I let it spin for a good 2 mins and then retried. Spun for another minute or so with no change. So cancelled out, restarted Apple TV, went back to same show and bought it right away with no issues.
FRUSTRATING. Literally, I must restart 2 times per week, sometimes more. Sometimes less.
Our primary goal was to let Apple TV replace our DirecTV service. We really hate commercials! LOL - but with not much luck on the Apple TV, I think we'll need to wait until Apple spends more time on this thing.
Mine's on eBay, so for now the problem is solved. Thanks for the replies...

  • After Archive and Install, my Home folder is not quite right....

I did an A&I last week and am slowly getting it back to the way it was (minus the problems) but am wondering if my Home Folder has all it should- it seems like it should have more in it so I am just double checking. In my Home Folder I have these items: Desktop, Documents, Library, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public and Sites. No Users folder.....And my Pictures folder just has a folder, it doesn't list my libraries nor does it have my Reunion Pictures folder in it (my genealogy software- it was stored there before and after the A&I) but it's not there now. I see that if I do a Finder search, typing in Reunion Pictures it directs me to my HD--->Users--->Home Folder--->Pictures and it comes up and I see them BUT I don't see it listed in the Pictures folder nor my other 5 libraries. So something is wrong and I need to get this set up right. Can anyone please help me straighten out this mess? I really, really appreciate the help and guidance, Judy

A short addendum: If I right-click on the Pictures folder, to highlight Show Contents, it's all listed there but I don't think I should have to do that. Plus, my Users folder isn't in my Home Folder (in the Finder, my "little house" is there and if I highlight I get just that short list of things but no Users Folder- should it be there? Or is it supposed to reside on the HD? Sorry, I am rambling. j

  • IPhoto 9.3 not quite right

I upgraded to iPhoto 9.3 and now it seems to be mostly working. I'm missing the options for the crop tool. Also when I click on the share button I see the badges for the different services but I don't see the text that describes them. Also when I click on the info button there is no info rendered by the application. See attached images. I've tried downloading and re-applying the "iPhoto9.3Update.dmg" as well as "MacOSXUpdCombo10.7.4.dmg". Anyone have any other ideas?
I've also tried setting up a fresh new iPhoto Library as well as launch iPhoto from a different account on the same computer, iPhoto behaves the same way.
I've also tried repairing disk permisions with Disk Utility.
    MacBook Pro
    15-inch, Mid 2009
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)

    Ok.
Other symptom is the dialog boxes when I right click on an image. It doesn't draw any text. Cut, Copy, Past etal. options not there.
I've tried re-installing iLife '11 from DVD. That brought on it's own challanges because you then have to apply the iPhoto 9.1 upgrade before you can apply the 9.3 upgrade.
Also tried repair/re-building images database by launching iPhoto while holding down command+option keys.
I've booted into recovery mode command-r and repaired permissions with Disk Utility.
I've booted into Single User user mode and run "/sbin/fsck -fy"
Now my laptop has never booted faster... But iPhoto issue still persists.
I've installed Aperture 3.3 and the iphoto library seems to be just fine since Aperture 3.3 has not problems using it.
Conclusion: I may just stick with Aperture 3.3 until the next version of iPhoto comes out? I really don't feel like paying the Appstore to buy iPhoto again...Or re-installing OS.
    Anyone else have ideas?

  • [Solved] Xfce not Maintaining assigned resolution

    Hello people,
From Thursday and been having a annoying bug with Xfce which is that it does not keep the settings screen resolution placed after a Shutdown / Restart. I mean I set the resolution of my monitor to 1920x1080 and after turning off the computer or restart it, on the next boot resolution 1920x1080 is not maintained but is changed to 1024x768, so that on every boot I set the resolution.
I have a Monitor AOC 22 "with native resolution of 1920x1080 and Nvidia graphics card with proprietary drivers
What could be causing this error? Any idea how to fix it?
    regards

Look through your /var/log/Xorg.0.log.   Read the parts about EDID, available screen resolutions, and the resolution selected.  Look for something about "Fuzzy" determination of aspect ratio and tell us if you find something as such.

  • Cover Flow of compilation albums not quite right on iPod Classic

Okay, so after receiving my new iPod classic 80gb the other day, I decided to go through and fix up a lot of my albums in iTunes to display properly in Cover Flow. I have lots of Various Artists albums and have marked all tracks in each album as part of a compilation so that they show up correctly in iTunes 7.4.1.2. Now, when I'm scrolling through Cover Flow within iTunes, these albums appear correctly as 1 entry of "Album Name", and then "Various Artists" underneath that.
However, when I move these tracks over to my iPod and then go to Cover Flow, it looks like instead of using "Various Artists" as the listed artist, it uses the artist of the first track on the album. So, for example, if track 1 were "Board Bangers - Cause the Beat's Hot", it would show "Board Bangers" instead of "Various Artists" as the album artist. However, if I click the middle button to "flip" the cover over to see the tracks, it correctly lists all the tracks for the album (even though it only lists the song titles and not the track artist).
Also, in iTunes, Cover Flow is sorted by album name, whereas on my iPod, Cover Flow is sorted by artist. I'm not sure if that's something I can change in the settings somewhere -- obviously, until this compilation CD "bug" is fixed, I'd rather sort by album name since I haven't memorized the artist of the first track for each disc, hehe.
Has anyone else experienced this or know of a fix for either of these issues?
    Thanks,
    Rob

You r not alone Rob! I just posted the same complain in a previous thread...

yeah..i just hope this whole Coverflow problem, along with the ridiculously slow menu response is fixed b4 my 14 days return period is up, if not...this iPOD is going back and am going back to my iPod Photo!

  • Photos from Walmart not quite right!

I am new to Mac and I’ve been having a blast so far.
I saved all my photo’s from my PC onto a portable hard drive and imported them into iphoto. I have since burned some photos to CD and tried to print them at Walmart. For some reason the photos all appear blurry, I can print the same photos on my local printer (HP deskjet 5150) and they look fine. Am I doing something wrong?

If you used Share > Burn from within iPhoto to create your CD, then you created a mini-iPhoto library that contains all the Originals, Modified photos, and thumbnails. Photo developers usually don't know what to do with these, and it does indeed sound like WalMart printed your thumbnails.
To create a CD for photo developing or non-Mac computers, first select the photos you want in the iPhoto window. Then File > Export to a folder on your desktop, and burn them from the Finder. By exporting, you will ensure that you get the full-sized, edited (if there is one) version of each photo, and nothing else. After you burn your CD you can trash the desktop copies in Finder.
BTW, the export method is also used for uploading to websites. It's better than fishing through the iPhoto library folder, which can lead to a damaged database.

  • Color depth adjustment -- running OS 9

    Dear All,
OK. This is all about running a special image processing software under OS 9. It requires 256 colors (yes written in 90's). I used to be able to do this with the control panel -- Monitors, which allows me to select among a number of resolutions and color depths. This includes my last laptop -- an iBook G3.
Now that I moved to TiBook G4, I thought I am able to do this too. But, it won't allow me! The only color depth is millions and resolution is 1280x854. Strangely, when I boot it into OS 10.4.11, I CAN switch among the several color depths and resolutions, including 256 colors!
Why is it that I can change the color depth when boot into 10.4.11, but not able to change it when boot into OS 9.2.2? Is there something missing in my OS 9 system folder?
I hate to return back to run in classic now that I am able to boot in OS 9...

Hi again, ycchen. See my last post in your other recent thread here, in which I suggested that there might be limitations on the capabilities of your copied OS 9.2.2. I suspect that this is one of them, and that it's because you don't have the right OS 9 driver for your Powerbook's video "card" (which isn't actually a separate card, but video circuitry soldered to the logic board). OS X includes drivers for all Apple's video processors, but a standard OS 9 installation on any given Mac includes only the driver for that machine's video processor. The OS 9 installer disc identifies the processor and installs only the right driver for it. Your installation of OS 9 for the iBook contained only the driver for the iBook's video processor, and not the one for the Tibook's.
My own 1GHz Tibook contains a bootable OS 9.2.2 installed from the Tibook's original Install/Restore DVD, and my OS 9 Monitors control panel looks like this:

  • Change color depth of shared screen?

I'm using ARD 3.2 on Mac Pros running 10.4.11.
First of all, I'm not asking about changing the color depth when viewing a screen with ARD. I would like to adjust the color depth when using the "*Share Screen...*" feature to put my screen on 10 other machines for demo purposes.
When viewing a screen there is a little slider to change among B&W, Grayscale, Thousands, and Millions. There is no slider or any preference that I can find for sharing, but I was wondering if there might be a plist or pref file that can be modified either client-side or on the ARD admin computer.
I need to have millions of colors, but all it will do is thousands. Anyone know if this is possible? Thanks.

    Hi *,
here's a little guide how to patch the Screen Sharing application so it'll allow adjustment of the color depth in full screen mode:

  • T430s - [Solved?] Wireless hardware is not bound to transport driver (Centrino 6205, Win7x64)

    Hello,
after clean install of my new T430s using System Update everything worked quite well, except for terrible DPC latency when loading web pages (crapping sound). Therefore I changed LAN driver to 11.10.84.0 from Lenovo (83rw15ww) and latencies went down (this driver has been recommended in some online forum).
Few days later I was on WiFi and latency spiked up again, but this time all the time above 8000µs - even when idle. I started to play with devices in Device Manager and ultimately reinstalled WiFi driver to Lenovo's 15.6.1, then Intel's 15.8.0. The most recommended driver from HP I was unable to install, so no harm there
Not sure when, but somewhere since this point I don't see wireless networks any more. Driver is fine (no yellow ? or !), wireless card is fine (replaced by spare one from my "HW guy"), all drivers has been reinstalled MANY times. When I try to add WLAN manually, Win7 says "Unexpected Error". Diagnostic tool from Intel says "Wireless hardware is not bound to transport driver". In Fn+F5 I see WiFi as off and I can't turn it on (unlike Bluetooth, which works well). Windows Diagnostics says there's an issue with a driver (sorry if I don't use exact words, my Win7 is not EN). I don't see this card anywhere in "ipconfig". There's no difference in diagnostics whether the wireless switch is on or off.
I read almost everything I was able to google about similar issues. I tried various drivers from both Lenovo (manual download from Lenovo website as well as using System Update) and Intel, both with and without Access Connections. I tried to remove the device from Device Manager and let Windows to find it again. I reinstalled LAN driver, tried to update BIOS (was already updated), tried to reset various stuff using "netsh" command, deleted Intel/Wireless dir in [username]/AppData, all this with/without reboots in between. Tried to play with card settings (in Device Manager), with power settings (both Windows and Power Manager), with on/off switch on a side of the laptop. I tried System Restore, which ended by error for all meaningful points. Nothing. All this on 3 different WLAN networks (2.4 GHz).
My last thought is to reinstall Windows from scratch, but it takes me at least 2 whole days to set everything up as I use a boatload of different work stuff for different customers.
My current WiFi driver, according to Driver tab in Device Manager for Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205, is 15.4.1.1 from January 23, 2013 (thru System Update). The more current one from Intel is 15.7.0.3 from April 18, 2013.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions, tips or help.
    EDIT
Just for the heck of it I switched wireless ON at home and suddenly my home WiFi network appeared in Win7 WiFi management (no AC). The last driver I installed was thru System Update, twice. Never restarted immediately, always after a while.
So I ran System Update again and it offered me available driver for WiFi (again!) and Access Connections. The online utility from Intel also offered me available drivers. I still have WiFi driver 15.4.1.1 (23.1.2013). To be honest I'm little affraid to update one or the other, as I did it so MANY times in past 30 hours with no effect.
The only difference I noticed is a new wireless device was available - Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter. It may be because of my Checkpoint Endpoint Security VPN software, but last time I saw this adapter was just before I lost all the wireless networks.
As much as I'm relieved it's working again, as a programmer I'm not happy about it, because I don't know WHY it's working now, when I didn't do anything for it since my last try. I only kept the wireless switch off for a fair amount of time.
Oh, and DPC latency stays below 300µs (up to 500µs is OK).

    hey smarmytime,
    let me get this right
laptop+router+modem (via cable) = connection working fine
laptop+modem (via cable) = connection goes wonky
laptop+wireless = works halfway then poofs
The wireless of yours comes from a Router+Wifi or is it coming from a Modem+Wifi set ?
If it's coming from a Modem+Wifi set, then try the following.
    1- turn off wireless
2- reset modem to factory setting (make sure wireless is off)
3- key in the necessary info to make a connection.
    4. switch wifi off on laptop
    5. connect laptop to modem via cable.
Does it connect ? Does it go poof halfway?
After that, turn on the wireless for both modem and laptop, try connecting again. Does it connect ? Does it go poof halfway?

  • Not able to go to the right resolution anymore..

    Hi,
    I'm experiencing the following problem:
Today I noticed that when I connected my 24" Samsung Syncmaster 245b to my macbook pro via vga-->MDP the big screen doesnt get its native resolution of 1920x1280px anymore.
Last time I connected my samsung screen it automatically picked the right resolution and there were no problems at all.
Now, I can't even pick the 1280x1920 resolution anymore in the display setup?
The biggest resolution I can pick for the samsung is 1920x1080..
Does anyone know how I can fix this big problem?
I need this big screen to edit my video's and its quite annoying to have to edit on a 15" screen suddenly.
    Thanks in advance!
    Greetings, Robin

Apparently the vga cable wasn't connected properly, the problem is fixed now.
