[Solved] xorg will not start after update

Hi there,
I updated Arch and when I restarted my computer lightdm did not start.  I ran systemctl disable lightdm.service and I was able to boot up to a command prompt and login.  I tried to start xorg-server by running startx  (my .xinitrc file has exec mate-session in it) and I got an error.  Here is my xorg log...

It looks like it's trying to start the nouvea driver.  The thing is I'm using the proprietary nvidia driver.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.
EDIT:
Okay, making progress...  I ran sudo modprobe nvidia and my driver loaded.  I ran startx and xorg-server started, Hooray!  Then my desktop opened and.....   froze.  Ctl-Alt-F1 did not open another tty, everything was completely frozen.  I had to hit the restart switch.  Any ideas?

Okay, I'm not really sure what I did to fix the problem, but it seems to have gone away.  I rebooted a few times and had to manually load my nvidia driver using modprobe in order to start xorg-server.  My system would still freeze though, then I installed the nouveau driver and started using that and the freezes stopped.  I reinstalled the nvidia driver and...  everything seems to work fine.  I reenabled lightdm service and my desktop loaded with no errors and there have been no system freezes.     ?????????????   I have no idea why that worked.

  • Firefox will not start after updating to version 7.0

Mozilla Firefox automatically updated itself to 7.0. Now, Mozilla will not start on my computer. It shows that it is running in task menu- processes... but not in Applications.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Computer will not start after update. Won't boot. Security Update. Grey.

This is a fix that worked for me. 2 times in the past Automatic Software update has corrupted my hard drive.
When installing using SOFTWARE UPDATE the installer for the security update fails, says it has been moved to trash and to try again. Well if you restart, you get a system hang and much sadness.
I tried the usual stuff, booting from CD(osx) and selecting the disk utility from the top menu. But that didn't fix it. Then I ran DiskWarrior, which usually fixes anything, but it didn't this time.
Here is what did work. I checked my other mac to see what the last security update was, and it had the 2009-001 update (worked on that mac). So I knew now that the one that screwed up was that update.
I downloaded that update to my laptop.
I started my iMac (the one that crashed after update) in "target disk mode" - this treats the whole computer as an external firewire disk drive (it's totally safe as long as you don't erase anything) - you start into target mode by holding down "T" key while turning on, leave it pressed until you see a symbol on the screen that looks like a "Y".
I hooked up a firewire cable from the iMac to my laptop and waited until the iMacs Hard drive appeared on the laptop desktop.
Now you can browse the corrupt drive just like a regular external drive.
If you have an external drive with room, this is a good time to back up the entire corrupt drive to a folder on the other external just in case...
But what I have found is that when the installer for the security update failed, it corrupted the file that mac osx needs to read during boot, so it is an isolated failure, but it is always better to be safe.
at this point you are ready to attempt the repair..
On my laptop I ran the installer for the security update I had manually downloaded from apples site. When asked for destination for the install I select the HD for the iMac (or whatever unit has the no boot situation that got corrupted). (note that if you have not renamed your main hard drives, you will have a choice of 2 with the same name). Usually the drive on the computer you are using will be first in line. Rename the drive on the computer you are using before running the install if you want to be sure there are no mistakes..)
Select the disk you want to (re)install to, and let it go. It is a long update, so be patient and let it finish. It should say preparing install, installing, finishing, and optimizing system performance...
When it says that the installation completed successfully you can eject the corrupt hard drive by dragging to the trash to dismount it. Then unplug the firewire cable.
Shut down the repaired (hopefully) machine by holding the power button until it turns of.
    Count to ten.
Prepare a celebratory or misery soothing beverage (but keep it in the other room).
Some people like to start in safe mode by holding down shift key while turning on, but I couldn't get it to work on mine...
Turn the computer back on and wait. The boot process will take longer than usual the first time.
If and when you get to login or desktop, go in and run apple disk utility and repair the disk, and repair the permissions.
If it worked, breathe a sigh, do a happy dance. And from now on when mac os says there are updates available, write them down, then go to apples site, download them manually, and install them manually, one at a time from now on, to avoid hassles.
    Hope this helps!
    Enjoy!

Thanks for the post/tips newfocus, hope it helps somebody!

  • Itunes will not start after updating to most recent version...

I updated itunes this evening to load up ios4 on my iphone. After updating, I rebooted and my screen resolution went from 1280 x 1024 to 800 x 600. Then I got a message saying I needed to restart bonjour, so I restarted it. Then an itunes error message came up saying itunes needed a certain screen resolution setting to function correctly (I had already reset it so I thought no more on it).
I can't start itunes now, every time I try I get that stupid "report to microsoft" message. I re-installed it and it keeps coming up. My head is melted, any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks!

That sounds as if either iTunes or BonJour has been set to run in an old-fashioned display mode. (Lord knows what caused it to happen, though.)
Let's try checking on iTunes first.
Try following the instructions in the following document, with the one change being that when you get to *step 8,* make sure that *no options whatsoever* are checked in the compatibility mode tab.
Will iTunes launch without the error now?
If you're still getting the error, could you let us know which particular Windows OS you're running? (It sounds like you've got XP, but I thought I'd better doublecheck.)

  • Firefox will not start after updating on Windows XP

I have just updated to the most recent version of firefox, 8.0.1, and it simply does not start when i click the icon.
It logs processes in the task manager, but does not actually launch the program.
The solution already listed on this site is not valid for windows XP, because i have no "application data" folder for firefox under my username.
    How can i fix this?

  • Firefox will not start after updating

    Troubleshooting steps taken:
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program.
I shift right clicked and Ran as Administrator.
I get no error message. Just... nothing happens.
Possibly related, I tried to run Adobe Flash update and it does not run either. Everything else seems to work fine on my system, including IE, however.

Thank you for all the pointers!
    Here are my results:
    [root@localhost ~]# cat .xinitrc
    exec startlxde
    [root@localhost ~]# vi .xinitrc
    [root@localhost ~]# cat .xinitrc
    exec gnome-session
    [root@localhost ~]#
I had installed LXDE earlier, couldn't configure the font DPI, so i tried GNOME, but forgot to change .xinitrc
    Thank you !

  • [SOLVED] Kernel will not boot after update to 3.1.5

Not sure what went wrong here. Pacman seemed to hang when updating, so I CTRL-C'd it and restarted the upgrade. It seemed to complete properly. That was a few hours ago and I did not immediately reboot the computer but went on with my work instead. After rebooting the laptop I get this
***normal boot up to this :
    Running Hook [uresume]
    resume libgcrypt version: 1.5.0
resume: Could not stat the resume device file '/dev/sda4'
Please type in the full path name to try again or press ENTER to boot the system: _
Pressing ENTER at this point results in mean looking error message :
ERROR : Unable to determine major/minor number of root device '/dev/sda4'
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
Type 'exit' to try and continue booting
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
    [ramfs /]# _
    **typing exit**
Trying to continue (this will most likely fail)...
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
You are being dropped into an emergency shell
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off
    [ramfs /]# _
Did I somehow ruin my install or is there something I can do?
EDIT : Oh and it can still boot the windows partition, so it's not likely due to defective hardware.

If you foolishly interrupted the initramfs creation after a kernel upgrade and didn't regenerate it manually, you earned this.
You'll need to find a live CD so you can chroot to your install and rerun mkinitcpio.

  • Firefox will not start after updating spyware doctor

I updated Spyware Doctor (normal auto update), it asked for a reboot and now Firefox doesn't start, just hangs. I can uninstall and re-install but I don't want to loose my bookmarks. How can I get Firefox (7.01) to run or just save my bookmarks.

My Itunes will not start after the latest update. I keeo getting error message tEventType : InPageError     P1 : c000009c     P2 : 00000003 . I have tried to reinstall but no joy. Any advise?

'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • ITunes 10.1.2 not starting after update

iTunes will not start after being updated to 10.1.2. Also experienced internet explorer being extremely slow. Tried to repair the installation, but same result. Uninstalled iTunes, restarted the computer, and internet explorer started working again. Reinstalled iTunes from Apple web page. Same result as after update. Everything worked fine before update, no errors during installation.

I have just had exactly yhe same problem.
    Try this!
Go to the itunes support page and uninstall / reinstall Itunes + quicktime exactly to the troubleshooting instructions.
It takes some time and patience but it works on my Vista operating system. Windows 7 should also work as the instructions refer to both systems.

  • Firefox will not start, after reboot.

For a few months now Firefox will not start after I reboot my computer. In order to get it to start I click the exe then must go into task manager kill it, click the exe again, kill it again then, from there it will typically start, but sometimes it may take one or two more trys. When clicking the exe firefox will appear in the task manager under processes but will will start with ~7% CPU usage, then quickly drop to zero every time until it does actually open and start. I have ran a full system recovery and started anew after reinstalling mozilla several times failed to fix the problem. I run virus and spyware checks often and come up clean, and also run Chrome as a default browser.

    Hello Tom.
You may be having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not coming from one of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] and select ''Disable all add-ons''. If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme. You can troubleshoot plugins the same way.
If you want support for one of your add-ons, you'll need to contact its author.

Just rented a movie in French on my iMac... movie will not start after download ?
    What I do now ?

Okay. I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
