Some characters are shown as boxes

Hi,
What can be wrong with PDF/computer. In the attached picture there are fragments from one PDF which in adobe reader (10.1.3) shows boxes instead of characters. Opening same pdf with different program, I get correct result.

Extended font pack didn't solve the problem. Odd thing is that some characters in the middle of the string are missing and same character A is shown in the beginning, but not in the middle. When looking to document properties, it shows as used fonts as in attached picture.

  • When trying to put a billing address in for the App Store, it says some characters are invalid.

    Well, as the title says, when I try to put a billing address in for the App Store, it says some characters are invalid. Could someone tell me the solution? I have a iPad 3, version 6.1.3.

    I am having the same problem.
    I get this message. The address contains invalid characters.
    Any solution?

  • Some characters show as grey box (missing from font?)

    Browsing, e.g. <http://www.haskell.org/onlinereport/haskell2010/haskellch4.html#x10-820061>, some of the characters are replaced by a grey placeholder box. Comparing with the desktop, one seems to be U+22C6, so I'm thinking that it can't find a font to display that with. But it seems to affect some ordinary ASCII-range characters too, in Fig 4.1 and following text at the URL above, so maybe there's more going on?
    More generally, from other questions here I gather that Firefox is using its own fonts rather than relying on what's on the device already. So, can I shore that up with some good fallback fonts like symbola?

    Firefox will use Charis or Clear Sans by default. Though if the glyph is not found in those fonts it will check the other system fonts such as Roboto or Droid Sans.
    The glyph coverage should be the same as Chrome or the 'browser/internet' application. If it is not then we would need a copy of the fonts installed on the phone as we have run into phones that ship corrupt fonts. Doing this requires the Android SDK and executing the following command
    adb pull /system/fonts/
    Then zip the fonts and share them with us.

  • Unicode characters are shown as "question marks" in Eclipse console

    I am trying to retrieve Unicode data from Sybase database using jdbc.
    The data are stored in Sybase with unichar and univarchar datatypes.
    Following is the java code tring to run.
    {color:#808080}public class Test
    public static void main(String [] args) throws Exception
    CoreServiceSoapBindingStub binding_Core = new CoreServiceSoapBindingStub();
    CoreWSServiceLocator locator_Core = new CoreWSServiceLocator();
    binding_Core = (CoreServiceSoapBindingStub) locator_Core.getCoreService();
    Contact[] con = binding_Core.getContact();
    for(int i=0;i< con.length;++i)
    System.out.println(con.getLastName());
    }{color}
    The result of this code in Eclipse console should be as follow (consists of one English and one Japanese name).
    {color:#808080}Suzuki
    &#37428;&#26408;{color}
    However when I run this, I get the following.
    {color:#808080}Suzuki
    {color}
    The alphabetical characters seem to diplay fine in the console, but foreign characters are not....
    The default character set of the database is ISO-8859-1, but I used unichar and univarchar to store data in unicode thus believe no issue at database side...
    Used jconnect 6.05 (com.sybase.jdbc3.jdbc.SybDriver
    ) for the database driver.
    Java files are encoded in UTF-8.
    Console Encoding is UTF-8.
    Is this an issue in database driver?
    Since I set the parameters for character set to UTF-8 in both the database and java files....
    It would be great if someone could give some comments on this issue....
    Thanks a lot.

    It might be better to ask this question on an Eclipse forum. I have a couple of suggestions, but none of them have made the output in my console look entirely correct:
    1. Try to start Eclipse with these parameters: -vmargs -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8
    2. Try switching the font settings for the Console under Preferences in Eclipse.

  • Why after exporting PDF to Word some characters are not displaying accurately.

    I exported a PDF to Word and it changed the case of some of the characters from upper case to lower case and even changed the font. In some areas the kerning is wonky too. What do I need to do differently?

    Very likely you are not needing to change anything. Some variation in output can be found depending on the data structure of the file involved.
    Will Adobe ExportPDF convert both text and formatting information?Adobe ExportPDF is capable of exporting high quality information,  but the quality of your Word document depends on the quality of the PDF  file you start with. For instance, if your PDF file was originally  authored in Microsoft Word and converted to PDF using the PDF Maker  functionality in Adobe Acrobat® software, your PDF file contains a rich  set of information that can be captured by Adobe ExportPDF. This  includes relative positioning of tables, images, and even multicolumn  text, as well as page, paragraph, and font attributes. If your PDF file  was originally authored using simpler PDF generation methods, such as  “print to PDF” or “scan to PDF” options, Adobe ExportPDF will convert  any recognizable text and then use sophisticated conversion intelligence  to preserve as much of the page layout as possible.

  • Firefox is failing to display many (but not all) images on websites that I visit, some images are shown and some are not even if they are in the same format.

    I recently changed my ISP because I was having connectivity issues. In particular my router would shut down sporadically. As part of my attempt to clear issues I ran some spyware software which I've been told I could trust. Since then I have a problem viewing many websites as many (but not all) of the images are missing, even on websites that I know very well, including my own. What is very strange is that on one site every page has a jpg image under the navigation bar and all of these jpg's appear except one which doesn't appear even when I reload images. This problem also makes security sensitive sites like my bank site look very amateur which frightens me. The problem does not occur on other web browsers.

    Which ''spyware software'' software did you run?
    Make sure that you allow pages to choose their colors and that you haven't enabled High Contrast in the Windows Accessibility settings.

    *Check the permissions for the domain in the current tab in "Tools > Page Info > Permissions"
    *Check that images are enabled: Tools > Options > Content: [X] Load images automatically
    *Check the exceptions in "Tools > Options > Content: Load Images > Exceptions"
    *Check the "Tools > Page Info > Media" tab for blocked images (scroll through all the images with the cursor Down key).
    If an image in the list is grayed and there is a check-mark in the box "<i>Block Images from...</i>" then remove that mark to unblock the images from that domain.
    There are also extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) and security software (firewall, anti-virus) that can block images.

  • Some characters are replaced by question marks!

    All of a sudden my iMac (OS X 10.5.1 Leopard) is displaying question marks for some special characters.
    For example, on internet, look up a word "pediment" in Yahoo! Dictionary ( http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/pediment)... Instead of showing the "dot" symbol to identify a syllabus break, it shows question marks as ped?i?ment, and instead of showing c with a little squiggle underneath for a word facade (within the definition of pediment), it shows fa?ade.
    I did not have this problem on my iMac on Tuesday (01/29/08) morning and I have not installed anything other than the Apple updates.
    I tried with FireFox and Safari, and both show the same thing. Then I went and checked my husband's iMac (OS X 10.5.1 Leopard) and it has a same problem, so I know it is not just my iMac.
    Then (yes, there is more...) I started to work on my Word document and tried to insert "symbol" from insert on the Toolbar... many of my symbol fonts (Symbol, Osaka, etc) has question marks replacing special characters.
    Please help! I am unable to complete my work without these special characters!!

    Well, I went to the Yahoo! Dictionary "Pediment" and it said it was set to Default which is set to Western (ISO Latin 1), so I assumed it was Western (ISO Latin 1). But when I click on Western (ISO Latin 1), the pages appear what it's supposed to look like with special characters... What does this mean?
    I reset all the settings; I chose something else as default, quit Safari, opened it and chose Western (ISO Latin 1) as a default to see if it changes anything... No change. It says my default is Western (ISO Latin 1), but it seems not.
    I am officially confused and have no clue what to do...??????!!!!!
    On the bright side, at least I can get my work done, even if I have to change the encoding one page at a time... Thanks.

  • On some websites, some characters load as only boxes with four numbers/letters in them. What is this, and how do I get it to display the characters properly?

    Several pages will display characters as only boxes with four letters in them. I would like it to display all the characters.

    See my posts in this thread: [/questions/766381]
    Pages that use Unicode (UTF-8) display a little box with the hex code if the character can't be displayed. That allows you to look up the character in a table.
    This can be caused by missing font support for East Asian (CJK: Chinese, Japanese, Korean) or complex script (Indic) languages.

  • TS1292 Some characters are missing on my iTunes gift card

    hey, I just purchased an iTunes gift card, and I thought it was the kind that you peel to reveal the code, but it took some of the characters off. is there anyway that I can still redeem the card? please someone help me!

    If the page that you posted from doesn't help then you will need to try contacting iTunes support (you will need to give them as much of the serial number and activation code from the card as you can read) : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then iTunes Cards And Codes

  • When trying to put a billing address in for an iphone repair it says some characters are invalid. How can this be solved?

    Cant submit my address for billing for repair. Says invalid characters used.

    I am having the same problem.
    I get this message. The address contains invalid characters.
    Any solution?

  • Just notice some characters are highlighted on address bar.. think its not like this before.. why is like that?

    '''bold text'''

    You can set the pref <b>browser.urlbar.formatting.enabled</b> to <i>false</i> on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
    *Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
    *Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
    *Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

  • Korean characters are displayed as blank box on the TextField in Galaxy Note 3/Android 4.4/AIR 4.0

    The AIR SDK we used is 1/14/2014 Release - AIR 4.
    The device we have tested on is Samsung Galaxy Note 3/Android 4.4.
    We found that it's quite similar with Bug 3681788 which has been fixed in Beta version 4.0.0.1619.
    We checked the issue again with this beta version, and the result is Chinese characters are shown correctly, but Korean's are still not.
    Bug 3681788: The CCJ languages characters are displayed as blank box on the TextField.
    Hope it can be fixed as soon as possible.

    Japanese Characteres have same issue.
    We tested on ASUS Nexus 7/Android 4.4.2/AIR 4.0 and Japanese characters are displayed as blank box in the TextField.
    The AIR SDK we used is February 20th 2014 Release - AIR 4.
    The device we have tested on is ASUS Nexus 7/Android 4.4.2.
    AIR SDK 3.6 worked fine.
    AIR SDK 3.9 has same issue.
    We tested Chinese on ASUS Nexus 7/Android 4.4.2/AIR 4.0, and Chinese Characters are displayed as blank box in the TextField.
    I doubt that Korean Characters will also displayed as blank box.( Sorry we cannot read or write Korean so we couldn't test it)
    I am guessing GalaxyNote 3(4.4) may also have same issue with Japanese.
    Hope this helps

  • Some Artwork images are shown and some are not, in Finder ???

    I scan the CD Cover of my music CD that I put in my iTunes (all with the same scanning setting; size, resolution, JPG...). When I go in the saved folder (Album Artwork) in Finder, some images are shown and some are not (even in Cover Flow), for those who are not, they only show a default image of a little boy with JPEG written in the center. When I go in iTunes, the image Artwork are OK, it's only in Finder that some are shown and some are not. In Finder, when I click for more info on the file, all the info seem OK and I see the preview image as it should. The bug is only in Finder.
    What is the problem, and how can I fix that ???
    Thank's

    Buz,
    If you select one of the images for which you can't see the thumbnail, Control + Click and select "Get Info". Can you see the thumbnail Preview in that view (Expand it if necessary)? What are the Sharing & Permissions at the bottom?

  • Arabic characters are no longer displaying properly in NB 6.7

    Hello all -
    Up until NB 6.5.1, my GUI displayed Arabic characters properly as typed. As I shifted to NB 6.7 Beta today, all those Arabic characters are shown as funny binary-looking characters! But, this only occurs when I am running from within the NB space. When I run the application by clicking the jar files, the characters print OK.
    Questions:
    - Is this happening because it is a beta version may be?
    - Is there a way or a place where I have to set some properties to display the Unicode characters correctly?
    For example, I thought all I had to do was right-click the project --> Properties --> Source --> Encoding: UTF-8
    Thank you for any help.
    PS: I am posting this problem in the Internationalization forums.
