Some distortion in playback

Two albums I recently purchased from the iTunes store exhibit some distortion in playback, which I hadn't heard in iTunes in a while. I seem to recall that this used to be a problem when I would import solo piano music (one of the albums indeed piano heavy), but they supposedly improved on this with new sound encoding techniques. Basically, I don't feel I am getting a crisp sound and that there is decay at some of the louder dynamic moments.
My playback equipment is of a pretty high quality (Bose headphones and Altec Lansing speakers), so I don't think this is the problem.
Anyone else have experience with this?
The albums were Duke Ellington's "Money Jungle" and "Have you Heard Jim Croce Live," by the way.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Hi,
Same problem here. Downloaded goo goo dolls let love in.. sounds like it is over-driving, especially the bass drum is causing the sound to break up. Even when I set it on NO equalizer.
I emailed the iTunes store about it, maybe you should too and we'll get some kind of response. I just want to re-download or get a refund and I'll go buy the CD and import it.

  • Ipod classic and some distorted/clipped playback

After spending many years with my 3G ipod I got a new 80GB ipod classic (thanks to my wife) but am having a problem with playback on 1.1/1.1.1. It seems that some songs are playing back exceptionally loud causing the output to be clipped/distorted.
Playback is through the digital connector and not the headphone output. This is through a iTrip auto scan modulator.
On the 1.0 firmware I found a work around. By going into the Volume Level while not connected and then connect I could "trick" the output on the digital out to adjust. Now this work around seems to be disabled and I cannot figure out how to fix it.
I checked some of the individual sounds in iTunes to make sure they were not bumped up in volume level and they are not.
    Any thoughts?

I had the same problems, and I found that using the AACgain program with iGain at the front end solved the problem. However, this does not work on songs bought from iTunes as they are protected. Spoken to iTunes about it, but they were no help. Can't understand why they don't run a gain adjuster on songs before they offer them for download. Won't be buying from iTunes anymore.

  • Randomly skips/fails to play some samples during playback?

Randomly skips/fails to play some samples during playback?

You're right that was foolish let me clarify.
Raising the I/O buffer thing is a good idea, i've tried that already though and no joy
BASICALLY i've had this problem with a couple of tracks, ones which i have worked on the longest and probably the ones with the most effect plugins and tracks used. Seemingly at random during playback some of the samples dont play (and some even stop playing halfway through the sample). If the regions are bounced, the resulting wav file visibly splits the original sound where the computer 'decided' to stop/restart playing the sample. Again, i haven't found a pattern: - at one point a four bar loop with three tracks solo'd would play all the tracks perfectly during playback for a few seconds, then suddenly switch to only playing one track, then switch back after another few seconds.
    Weird.
I think it may be related to previous experience which i have had with the Space Designer and Echo effects, where the echo or reverb sound itself cuts out halfway through the sound/after a seemingly random amount of time (and then cuts back in).
I've seen this reverb and effect problem on more than one computer, but the original problem with the track playback is, in my experience, unique to my system.
The computer i'm using is not old or at all running out of memory (although i realise this does not exempt it from being the cause of the problem)
Anyway this has been trolling me for weeks and its driving me mad
    Thanks

  • DVD Menu distorted on playback and finished copy

The last several projects I have worked on in Premiere Elements 9 seem to have an issue with the DVD Menu being distorted on preview and playback as well as when I burn them to DVD .  I noticed it several months ago on a short 20 minute video.  The DVD Menu was distorted, fuzzy and the titles were barely legible.  The video itself was just fine.  It was a standard play DVD … nothing special.
On the next project with the above in mind, I checked the Project Settings and all looked as it should.  I started editing and noticed playback was different when viewing clips in the timeline.  While playing the clip, the video and graphics looked fuzzy until I stopped the playback.  Then the image instantly sharpened and looked as good as I expected.  I continued editing assuming I never noticed the difference in this before.  I am still not sure whether this problem is related to the DVD Menu or not.  Anyway, I created the DVD menu and AGAIN, the DVD Menu looked fine until it is previewed or played back.  I even burned a copy to disc and the DVD Menu still looks as distorted and unclear as it does in the preview window.
This is the DVD Menu and honestly it looks worse than this screen shot improves upon it.
I would appreciate if anyone can provide some guidance on what the project settings should be or maybe the playback settings.  I am using a PC with a 64-bit processor with Win 7 O/S and 4 GB of RAM.
If there are any other questions I need to answer, please ask them and I will provide a response as soon as possible.
Thanks again for any assistance provided.

So apparently the screen shots I posted in my two posts did not get added.
    Here they are;
    The project settings;
    Thanks again,

  • Zr 100 playback is choppy and sound is distorted. Playback is undetermined if clear or not.

I have owned this camera for some time now. It has not been through any trauma or drops. However lately when I go to playback any recordings the playback are chopped up and distorted. Please advise.

    Hi greeneye1!
    Thanks for the post!
It is possible that this is related to the tape you are using.
    How old is the tape?
    Have you tried other tapes?
If the tape is older, I recommend that you try another tape if you have not already done so.  Try recording new video to the newer tape and see if it still plays back the same way.  If it is still choppy and distorted, the camcorder may be in need of repair.
Due to its age, this model is no longer in service life.  However, you still have the option to participate in the Canon Loyalty Program instead.  The Canon Loyalty Program option allows you to replace your current camera for a discounted fee, plus shipping. The original non-functioning camera would then be returned to Canon USA for recycling.

  • ATV (Gen3) Newest updates severely distort audio playback from iTunes. Please Help!!!

I just updated my iTunes and ATV (Gen3) to the newest versions and immediately noticed severe distortion in audio playback from iTunes library. No hardware changes have been made and yesterday the sound quality was just fine. I have one running an optical cable into a high end receiver and another running off a HDMI cable into the TV with powered Speakers for output. I checked both systems on all inputs and it's only the Apple TV with the distortion. Someone please help as that is the only thing I really use on the device. iTunes version 12.0.1.26

Weird, I just opened iTunes to add some songs and now its playing fine.
Though I still can't figure out how to change the columns and having them stick to what I want .

  • Reinstalled drivers Recording is distorted. Playback of existing files fine. SoundBlaster Live

I got a new motherboard an ABIT Socket A with an AMD 3000+ processor and gig of memory. After installing drivers 'Li'veDrvUni-Pack(ENG).exe' and also after installing patch 'Li'veDrvPack_Patch.exe' recording is distorted. The input level is not clipping but the playback of the new recording is horribly distorted. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers over and over and it just won't work. The playback of existing files is fine. Have duplicated problem with both ACID 4 , ACID 5, and microsoft sound reocorder, so I would assume it can't be an issue with recording software. I have the problem with a guitar plugged into the Mic and Aux2 inputs of the li've dri've as well as when recording 'What you Hear' with Winamp playing, so that rules out the li've dri've inputs. Has anyone had this same issue? I am going insane with this one. I had installed the KX drivers previously but found the interface awkward so I uninstalled them. I dont think that is the issue, since I have uninstalled them, as well as uninstalled and reinstalled the Creative drivers a few times since. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Yes exactly as you mentioned. I have SoundBlaster Li've! 24-Bit Internal and facing the same problem. All is working very good, but only sound in WOW is terrible: it's muffled, degraded and seems to runs only in 22khz.
It is a big irony because i bought this card only for WoW to replace my onboard card and now the old one sounds much better in WoW as the new SB
    Anyone with help?
Now it seems that I return my card like you... and people from creative, think about it! WoW is most played game ever!Message Edited by magnetique on 0-06-2006 :24 AM

  • Distorted MP3 playback

Here is a problem that has been vexing me for several days:
The latest batch of MP3s that I have ripped from my CD collection - they sound fine when played back on the desktop in winamp or itunes. But when I copy them to the ipod they sound distorted and warbling (under water or flanging sound) on the ipod. I'm using the same Sennheiser headphone set, switching between the ipod and computer.
Detailed information: These are MP3s ripped at 320kps. The warbling/distortion is not subtle (my girlfriend who is no audiophile can clearly notice). The strange thing about this is the mp3 tracks I ripped (same software and settings) copied to the ipod several weeks ago sound great. The existing library on the ipod sounds normal.
As a test - I re-ripped one of the offending tracks (acoustic piano and cello - Beethoven) in Exact Audio Copy (the program originally used), then in iTunes @ 320kps MP3, then iTunes @ 320kps AAC. All 3 of these tracks sound fine on the computer, but when copied to the ipod - the AAC sounds fine, but the 2 MP3s sound bad. Then I ripped the same track in EAC @128kps and in iTunes @160kps. These sound OK (the 128kps file, it is hard to tell if there is warble or the standard compression). One of the 320kps tracks I ripped before the problem started, I recopied to the ipod - that sounds OK also. So has something changed on my desktop that would affect both iTunes and EAC ripping - I assume they used different encoders/dlls? Is there some audiophile hating DRM?
I've reset the ipod a few times and it has the most current software. Besides a restore - any suggestions? THANKS!
    ipod 3g   Windows XP Pro

No its not your iPod's problem I think - because on my little flash mp3 does the same when I load the songs I encoded from iTunes onto it.
I don't know if there's an answer to this on Apple website, but it may have something to do with bit rate and cetain frequencies. I recently mass-encoded some of my favorite tunes using 96kbps on iTunes, and loaded them onto my flash mp3 player. It warbled. But the same song, when in 320kbps, did not warble.
I also think the distortion builds up with time. For example, if you keep re-encoding the same song over and over with different bitrates, then the warble sound may start to be emphasized.
Just some guesses on the problem; I'm not exactly a technitian either so I dont know whats causing this...

  • Own an X-FI Elite Pro - Getting what sounds like a CD skipping and some distortion

Interesting I have had this card for some time now...and I never experienced any kind of distortion...popping...click noises...or anything that the majority of people here have been complaining about. I though I was one of the lucky few...that has all changed.
I started playing some BF2 the other day...and of course have the in game audio settings set to ULTRA to and X-FI to make use of my XFI 64 megs of RAM...anyways, this is the same setting I have had in BF2 since I've owned the game and have had my XFI - Elite Pro.
Anways, there I am playing my game when all of a sudden from time to time I hear what sounds like an audio CD skipping! I thought at first it was just me or the game...but no...it seems to happen more often than it use to! Like its getting wores! It cleary sounds like an Audio CD skipping!
another thing I started to notice is when playing MP3s and such.... I can hear distortion in the background! Its a bit hard to explain but what it sounds like the distortion isn't in the actual audio mix...almost like background distortion!
to test I would play the same audio track on my home theatre system and to my dismay... I heard no distortion...so that would label my XFI Elite Pro as the problem.
a couple of things to note:
st.. I have 2 fans hooked up on the same rail on my PSU that connects to the XFI Elite Pro. The fans have fan controlers as well... I haven't tried this...but its possible that since the fans are hooked up to the same wire as my XFI is...its possible I may be getting some electrical interference with them.
2nd... I just updated to the latest BETA drivers released by Creative. This is where I first started to notice the problem.
I have yet to dry difference drivers or remove the fans...however, I do believe I am finally experiencing what many other have been since there purchase.
I paid a **bleep** pretty penny for my Elite Pro and deffinitly EXPECT it run PERFECT!
    deffinitly unhappy thus far.
I do have an Nforce based chipset. As well as an ASUS A8N32-SLI with the most recent BIOS update.
Like I said before, I am just now getting this sounds...its possible it could be the BETA drivers, I will keep you all posted.
For the mean time, anyone have any insight or opinions for me?
    thanks in advnace!

    no ideas huh?
is this the same stuff everyone else is experiencing?

  • Plug-in Problem: Guitar Distortion on playback but not on record

Just plugged in my guitar to play through Logic and I've come across a problem I've never had before.
I'm playing my guitar direct. The level is fine in Logic and I can hear in through the monitors. When I had any effect like Guitar Amp or Guitar Rig 3, arm the track and play i get nothing but the clean guitar sound. no input reading into the plug-ins yet input is present in Logic. If I record a little audio and then playback the track it plays with the distortion. Anybody know why all of a sudden my effects won't play in record armed mode?

It's sounds like you're monitoring the dry guitar direct from your interface. Make sure direct monitoring is turned off, and turn software monitoring ON in Logic.
Now you should hear the effected guitar on your recording channel, even though just the clean signal is recorded.

  • Player 10 - Slow and Distorted MP3 Playback.

I began experiencing this problem once I download Flash
Player 10. The mp3 playback is slow and sounds very distorted.
This only seems to occur with mp3s at a 48k sample rate. Mp3s
at a sample rate of 44.1k sound normal. Is there a way to fix this
without converting the sample rate? Is Adobe working on a solution?
    Thank you.

I'm getting the same thing. Are all of you on Apple platform? It seems to be the only place this is showing up.
    Macbook Pro - OSX 10.5.6
When I uninstall flash player and reinstall 9 it works fine. On another not when using CS4 at work the same thing happens locally when I test the movies.
It's sounds like music on nitrous in hell. .. . .

  • Quicktime 7.1.3 distorted video playback

I am currently running itunes 7.0.1.8 with quicktime 7.1.3 for windows. Video playback with quicktime both seperately and within itunes is distorted and no picture can be seen, the distortion is mostly pink in colour. There is no problem with sound. Any help would be much appreciated.
      Windows XP

Open the QuickTime Control Panel and click the "Advanced" tab.
Click the radio button for "Safe mode" (not DirectX) and try the file again.

  • Flash player distorts on playback

I'm trying to play back a commercially prepared flash movie
    from the following web address:
    http://forum.equis.com/Training/Online%20Demo/Revised%20Online%20MS%20Demo%20v3/Revised%20 Online%20MS%20Demo%20v3.html
On an Acer laptop (turion 64 processor, 1.25 gb ram, win xp)
    it plays fine.
On a gigabyte board with an Intel Q6600 quad core processor,
2 gigs of 1066 Mhz Kingston ram, an Nvidia 8800GTS video card and a
Raid 5 hard drive array driven by an Intel ICH9R controller, the
playback distorts in a most unusual fashion. It will play fine for
perhaps 20 seconds or so; then it's almost as if the presentation
slams into extreme fast forward for an instant. The voice narration
shifts into chipmunk speech, perhaps 5 or 10 times normal playback
speed. This only happens for an instant, perhaps one fifth of one
second; then normal playback resumes. It happens at exactly the
same point every time I try to play the presentation. The effect is
the same when viewed in either Firefox 2.x or IE7.
    Any thoughts? I'm completely mystified.
    Regards, Charles Worton

I have another computer with the same browserversions, version of Flash Player etc. And it works fine. Could this be a Sound Card issue?

  • PLEASE HELP!!!  Distortion during playback of audio

Hello everyone. I recently purchased an IMAC and Logic Xpress 8. I am using Lexicons Omega for my input source and for monitoring. When i play through the unit is records fine, but when i play back what i have recorded i get some horrendous digital distortion. I made sure all of the levels are set without any clipping, but still get the distortion when playing audio back. The distortion even seems to occur sometimes when there is no audio playing at all. Like while i am typing this. Any thoughts. i have had this setup for about 2 weeks and i am pulling my hair out just trying to get the monitoring thing under control. Any help is greatly appreciated. thanks
    -Shaun

I did what you said. I have the core audio enabled and the Lexicon usb device clicked. I tried turning on and off the unit, changing usb port and restarting the program and nothing. Still there. Any other thoughts. My other idea was to use the built in sound to play back my audio via an 1/8 inch to 2 1/4 splitter cable direct into my monitors, and then use just the lexicon to get the audio into the computer. Is this possible and if so how???
    thanks again for your help

  • Some DISTORTION using Adaptive Limiter

    Hi there,
Wierd! Master Sound like Distortion when apply Adaptive Limiter!
AL apply after Multipressor! E'thing below Overload Peak level.. Gain Level upto 9 to get the level as loud as commercial standard!
What's wrong do u suspected on my case?

You really add 9 dB using AdL? That is too much, try to keep it under 6 dB somehow... Even better (imho) is 'my' rule of thumb: if you 'need' to add more than 3 dB, something's not quite right yet in the mix...
Alternative: assign drums and bass tracks (+rythm section, add to taste) to it's own aux, compress/adlimit that with some/much force, and make the final master compression much subtler (add perhaps only 2 dB or less with adlimiter or similar loudness maximizer plugin.)
The distortion could also come from the combination - how does it sound when you bypass MP? And how does MP sound on its' own?
    regards, Erik.
