Some Ideas On Organizing/Maintaining Photos via iPhoto? How do YOU do it?

I posted a couple of technical questions last week concerning iPhoto and how it handles files, thumbnails, EXIF data, and photo originals/copies (as http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11425805). Terence Devlin and LarryHN gave me the answers I needed. From their answers, I now have an understanding of the default method iPhoto utilizes to manage and maintain photo libraries.
Those answers have led me to a couple more questions, mostly regarding how I can best organize and maintain my photos via iPhoto within a multiple Operating System household. My massive music collection is easy... I manually maintain and organize my music files via iTunes. I can download music and fix tags in XP or OSX. I store the results on my Windows-based file server and share the iTunes library. On my MacBookPro, I have an iTunes Library that references the directories on the server. Or, I can just access the "shared" iTunes library. Same with my Ubuntu machine (with some anomalies.) Both Windows and OSX have versions of iTunes. Not so with iPhoto.
So, by default, importing my photos into iPhoto will make "copies" as well as a proprietary database containing the EXIF changes I make within iPhoto. I don't see that as the best scenario for me.
What would YOU suggest? How about storing my photos on my file server and pointing iPhoto to the location in "Referenced Mode?" This seems to be similar to how I manage my music. Yes, I know that if I change a filename or path that the library will loose track of it. I deal with this in iTunes. Occasionally, If I make a bunch of changes, I just delete my iTunes library and re-load. But that's the beauty of iTunes... if I change MP3 tag data using iTunes, the changes are made within the MP3 file itself. So if I loose the library, who cares?
I was hoping to use iPhoto in a similar way: Make changes (places, faces, etc) and have iPhoto save the data within the EXIF fields of the photo itself. That way if I move the photo around, or restore from a backup, ot loose the iPhoto library, so be it!
Unlike iTunes, it sounds like if I loose my iPhoto library, I loose all my metadata as well (unless I "export" the photo from within iPhoto?) PLUS I need to maintain the original photos and the iPhoto copies... unless I use Referenced Mode.
How about some organizational ideas/inspiration/guidance? Help me tidy up my sloppy photo collection.

Key points
1 - iPhoto has NO cross platform capabilities
2 - iPhoto is not well oriented to managing referenced libraries

That is not the way iPhoto works

You have to maintain both in either a referenced or managed library - but in an referenced library the originals are your responsibility to maintain and to keep the path constant

Probably iPhoto is not the correct solution for your needs

  • Live in Canada, Print/mail photos via iPhoto to UK

    Hi
I live in Canada and am interested in ordering some photos via iPhoto. Photos are for delivery to UK. So I'd like to place the order with Apple iPhoto service in UK rather than in Canada (which delivers only to US/Canada).
    Is this possible?
Or must I use a photo printer other than iPhoto?
    Guidance welcomed.
    Regards, Ross

    no - http://www.apple.com/support/photoservices/shipping/ and http://www.apple.com/uk/support/photoservices/shipping/
And your address and credit card must match the country you order from
Each of the pages listed above have an e-mail information request form you can use to double check

    Yes

  • I have sent photos via iPhoto in the past.  Had to reset my email address

When I attempt to email a photo using iPhoto, a yellow triangle pops up with an exclamation point. No text, no instructions, and only option is to click OK.  IWhat do I do?    I have sent photos via iPhoto in the past, no problem. Had to reset my email address in preferences for some reason , and a request for iPhoto to share my photos or something came up and I just clicked OK thinking I needed to do that to email them.  Now, yellow triangle.  ( I have changed my preferenced to send via my email program, but I prefer iPhotos snappy layouts and would like to correct this problem.)

In iPhoto's Accounts preference pane delete the email account, close and open iPhoto and add the account back again.
If that doesn't help try some of the photo stationary in Mail.

Yeah it works fine over wifi the problem is when I try to use it over my 3G. It's really stressing me out now.

  • Sending photos via iphoto

I am unable to send photos via Iphoto.  I get a message to check outgoing mail settings.  I am not sure what the outgoing mail settings should be.
outgoing mail servier :  smtpme.com, port is 587, should the box at the bottom be checked or unchecked?  I have tried it both ways and it still doesnt resolve
    the issue.

I have it checked and it works for me.  Delete that account and then add it back anew.  See if that will do the job. The server address and port are the same that I have setup for my iCloud account.
You can alway set Mail as the emali client of choice so you can get more features, i.e. copies of sent messages, more templates under Stationary,  etc.

  • I cant share my photos via iphoto anymore?

i can't share my photos via iphoto email  for the past few days now, i have a message saying that i have to sheck my server but all is fine on my end! does anyone know how to solve this problem?

keep on ticking the photos box but as soon as I close the window it resets and we are back to square 1.
This is in the system/iCloud preference pane, right?  Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair both the disk permissions and the disk.  Reboot normally and try setting the System/iCloud preference again.

Hello, I share photos via iPhoto on social networks, I would like to know if after the partition, I can withdraw my iphoto photos without removing iphoto?

While you are free to do what you want - it is strongly recommended that you do not use a referenced library (Do Not uncheck the preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto lbrary")  If creates problems, saves no space and sets up for futrue nighemares
You final conclusion is the correct one - FOR YOU - if you want destructive editing rather than the lossless editing that iPhoto provides then simply do not use iPhoto

When I zoom in on photo using iPhoto, how can I save the zoomed in photo please?  I would like a screen shot of my zoomed in photo - is this possible?.  Cropping doesn't give the same effect as zooming in and magnifying the photo.  Any help would be appreciated thank you.  I have an iMac

To take a screenshot of the zoomed photo, press either the key combination
⇧⌘3   for a screenshot of the full screen, or
⇧⌘4   to bring up a selection rectangle: select the section of the screen, that you want to save.
The screenshots will be sent to your desktop; drag them from there to the iPhoto icon in the Dock to import them.

  • IPad Keynote presentation via airplay - how do you zoom in

When playing a Keynote presentation on ipad to a monitor via airplay, how do you zoom into a slide? The "expand/pinch" 2-finger method just ends the presentation.

My guess is that the presenters were using the "Action" function in the build option inside inspector, there are options called "actions" where you can rescale an image larger or smaller.
There is also a slide transition called "magic move" which would allow the same image on two slides to alter as an action build (such as scaling) while transitioning from one slide to the next.

  • I just updated to IOS 10.10.3 and the new photos app.  How do you hide photos so they don't show anywhere?

I just updated to IOS 10.10.3 and the new photos app.  How do you hide photos and videos so they only show in the hidden album.  Thanks

When publishing from Lightroom to Facebook, you are always sending them to an album. Lightroom doesn't generate you posts though. Generally Facebook is smart enough to create just one post for all of your images published to a single album. If you are getting individual posts per photo there isn't anything you can do from Lightroom's side to change that. Try refreshing you page your newsfeed or timeline to verify whether individual posts are being created or if it's just a timing issue.
Also, uploading images to Facebook will always result in your file having a different file name on the server and in the page code. No avoiding this, no matter your method of upload.

What version of iPhoto do you have and what system version?  How are you going about trying to send the photos?  Describe step by step what you're doing.
Where are you seeing the yellow triangle? Can you post a screenshot of what you're seeing?
