Some problem with transitions

Hello everybody!
For example I have three clips in a row on the timeline. And I want to make a transition effect between them.
When I move the second clip to the left (to make a transition between the first clip and the second clip) , the third clip doesn't move and I get an empty space between the second clip and the third. I tried to move the second clip holding Ctrl button as a result of that an empty space doesn't appear but the first clip are splitted into two parts and one of these parts appers on the right of the second clip then I delete this one and  I also receive an empty space.
What should I do to make clips shifting simultaneously [without appearing of gaps]? I also tried to use some tools on the right panel [beside timeline] but it could not help me.

This is in anticipation of the next question. If the applied Transition does not work, as you would assume that it should, read up on "Handles" in the Help files. This is a tripping point for many beginning editors.
If your Transitions do exactly what you want - ignore the above comment, though reading on Handles is always a good thing.
