Something I dont understand...(manually manage music/videos)

It seems that I accidentally made a mistake at some point and wasnt aware they were all connected in this regards.
I manually manage all my Music (songs), Movies & TV Shows on the iPad.
So i select and drag the content I want. (im still not keen on "syncing music & videos).
At any rate I was purchasing a few books off iBooks and i wanted to sync them back to the Mac I port my iPod with.
I realized "Books" werent synced to my Mac or to the iPad so I selected sync Books and applied.
During that process it removed all my manually added music & videos.
Then disabled the Manually Manage music & videos check box in my iPad preferences.
Well it doesnt say anything about books...is there any way to change this as I dont have a lot of books and would like them to be synced back and forth between iPad and my Mac.
But want to retain my personal music and video collection .....
thank you.

In the early days I used the same technique you did but soon found it did not suit my usage patterns so I opted to 'manually' manage my music through playlists and by individually checking the videos I wish to have loaded so I leave the box 'Manually manage...' unchecked.
I create playlists and sync only those playlists I wish to be on a given device. For example, my 32GB 3GS iPhone, my 32GB iPhone 4, and my iPad contain the same music and the major playlist is named 32GB. For my iPad I currently use the 32GB playlist because I only have 20GB of music.
I also have a similar playlist for my old 16GB 3G--yes, that playlist is named 16GB. I also have individual playlists both plain and smart set up for each device and I select them, too, but all songs that are on a given device are in the 16GB or 32GB playlists. Since the song only has to be on the device one time placing it in multiple playlists on the device does not place additional copies of the song on the device.
To sync by playlist you connect your iPad, select it in the devices area to the left, click on the Music tab and check on Sync Music. In the box below the Sync Music you select 'Selected playlists, artists, and genres'. I only use playlists, but the others work as well.
For Movies you select the Movies tab. Select 'Sync Movies'. You can chose the 'Automatic' mode but for me none of the options work so I leave the automatic box unchecked and then individually check the movies I wish to go to my iPad.
It is simple this way and I found it to be much more efficient than manually managing music videos via the checkbox.
Books can be handled in the same manner via the Books tab.

I seem to be having an issue with selecting "Manually manage music & videos" from iTunes 11.  I have always used the same computer/iTunes to put music on my phone but ever since downloading iTunes 11, I can no longer do so. In the summary section for my phone I have tried to reselect that option and hitting apply but get a message

Does anyone know if there is a way around this/why it thinks it is a different iTunes library?  Please help!

  • HT1202 Manually Manage Music/ Videos with multiple computers

I recently got a new iphone 4s and when it was set up I made sure the manually manage music part was on, I added my music and everything worked fine.
I'm abroad now and wanted to delete and change some of my music but the manually manage box is no longer ticked and I get the warning saying "Your phone is Synced with another iTunes Library do you want to erase this iphone and sync with this itunes libary". How can I get around this I dont want to lose all my music!!!!
    Please Help!

As the message infers, you can only sync your iDevice to
a single iTunes library.  The only way around this, which is
of no real use to you now but for future reference, is to have
your iTunes library (entire iTunes folder) an a separate hard
drive and carry it around where ever you go.  Any computer
you have will need to be set up to connect its iTunes to that
    library.
The one caveat of this is that is backups of the iDevice.
Each computer will have a different backup file depending on
when you synced to the computers (backups are stored
    in ~/Library/Application Support/Mobile Sync/ Backup on
the computer not in iTunes library).  Where this is problematic
is if you need to  do a restore and you only have a computer
available with an old backup and not the most recent.
The other problem will be if you manage Address Book, Calendars,
etc. different on different computers.  Things can get jumbled, lost,
    or just plain add duplicates.
As for your current situation, there really isn't much you can do.

  • Manually manage music & videos

Hi, I accidentally ticked this in the option section of my device in my itunes account and now I can't untick it.
I want to move across a purchase from my itunes account to my ipod and although I've sync'd I think this must be stopping it moving across.
Thanks for any help you can offer

On the iPhone Summary screen, there is an option to sync only checked songs and videos. The only problem I have with that is the Video tab has its own set of checks that don't seem to correlate with the checks in the library.

  • Manually manage music and videos of iPhone 4s using pc

My computer crashed and clean reinstalled the operating system on my PC, I had to reauthorize the computer.
Now I installed iTunes and when I check Manually manage music & videos, it tells me:
that it's synced with other another iTunes library.
The Only option is erase and sync or Cancel
I had the computer backed up so that the good news, so I tried coping the files from the back up and putting it in my PC but did't work.
I went into preferences and under advanced changed the iTunes Media folder location to the hard hard drive that has my back up.
Thinking that would do it, it didn't work?
    Please help!
    Any suggestions

From your pc back up find the iTunes library and copy the entire library to your new computer.
Copy over your photos too plus any other important documents.
Once your iTunes library is on your new computer your should be able to start iTunes and sync to the new computer. Yes you will get the message that this is a new computer but the music etc. is the same as what was on the old computer.

  • Manual managing music on 2 computers?

with my ipod I can manually manage music on multiple PC's
on my wife's Iphone it goes to auto sync on the 2nd PC
    am I doing something wrong?

Since disk mode is required for this, probably for security reasons which is not a concern with an iPod only without internet access.
what would be the purpose of manually managing then?
Good question, since the primary benefit when doing so with an iPod is transferring iTunes content from an iTunes library on more than one computer. Some habits are harder to break than others and for those who prefer manually dragging songs to their iPod, the option to do the same with an iPhone is available event though this can be done with an iTunes library on a single computer only. If you are manually managing music and video with an iPhone and the iPhone is restored with iTunes if wanted or needed, you must remember which music and video was available on your iPhone and manually drag it back to the iPhone. With syncing, when restoring your iPhone from your iPhone's backup, your selections under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes are pre-selected since this is included with your iPhone's backup When purchasing music direct with the iPhone, the music will be copied to your iTunes library automatically the next time you sync your iPhone with iTunes after doing so. No so with manually managing music videos. Manual means manual all the way.

  • HELP!!! manually managaing music/video for IPOD classic PROBLEM

i set my ipod to manually manage music/video because i want to save space on my computer, etc.
so i made that my setting and i applied it and everything.
so i unchecked everything in my library. and when i add a song to my library, i check it, so it will be added to my ipod when i synch.
but when i synch, that particular song that i checked is not added to my ipod.
what is the problem with this?
    any help is much appreciated!
    thanks

I think you are confusing the two meaning of manual management.
When they asked and you said you would manually manage it, you told itunes not to copy things to your device because you planned to do it manually with the computers file browser.
If that is not what you want, and what it sounds like, you should allow itunes to manage the device, and then the check box thing you are trying to do should work for you.

  • IOS 7.0.3 will not correctly "manually manage music and videos" any more?

So, on all my iOS devices, I have always used "Manually manage music and videos" to drag albums from my iTunes library to my iPhones.
I then use iTunes to delete the albums and replace them with others (I have a lot of music).
With the iOS 7.0.3 update -- if I delete songs on the phone in iTunes 11.1.2 -- they show (in iTunes) that they have been deleted.
However, the songs are still on the iPhone when I go back to the Music app.
Is anybody else seeing this? I filed this (as it wasn't an issue with 7.0, 7.0.1 or 7.0.2), but am wondering if I'm missing something terribly obvious all of a sudden...
My only options at this point are to manually delete songs on the phone individually or to delete *all* the songs from Settings -- neither of which is optimal.
I filed a bug on this, but wondered if anybody else ran across this and figured out how to fix it?

It looks as though I MAY have found a solution after playing with this since last night ... Let me know if it works for you!
I went through and deleted a few random songs through iTunes on the "On This iPhone" tab ... they still showed on my iPhone but not in the Music part on iTunes. I then clicked sync at the bottom next to the memory bar on iTunes and it seemed to have removed the songs from my iPhone.
However, my iPhone is saying I have 1 more song than my iTunes is saying which I still don't understand but if I can still manually manage my music I guess it's a small price to pay for the minor confusion.
Really getting tired of becoming a detective just to work my phone appropriately. Apple should really stop making all these changes and stick to what the customers know and like. Frustrated and annoyed customers won't raise their sales...

  • Trouble with loading videos - Manually manage music and videos not supported now with iOS5 and a 1st gen iPad?

Since updating my iPad 1st gen to iOS5.0.1 videos don't get loaded properly into the Videos app.
On the Summary page in iTunes of my docked iPad, I have always checked the box for "Manually manage music and videos".
I have my reasons for doing it this way, but that's for another thread perhaps.
The problem is that when I load a video to my iPad this way - by simply just dragging it from the desktop and onto the iPad, under Devices in iTunes - it copies/updates, and shows up on the iPad like it always has before iOS5. But now, with iOS5, when I undock, it can't be found anywhere within the Videos app on the iPad. The only way I can find it is to do a Search, which seems to find it, but when I click it, a different video plays - the first video in the Movies list in the Video app. Dock the iPad again, yes the video is there, according to iTunes, but no way to play it once iPad is undocked.
My suspicion is that with iOS5 you are no longer able to use the "Manually manage music and videos (Mmm&v)" that you will be forced to run everything through iTunes - and probably iCloud. I've unchecked the Mmm&v box, and get prompted with "Are you sure? - All existing content on the iPad will be replaced with content from your iTunes library". READ - "Rebuild your entire video and music collection, and this time run it all through iTunes. Welcome to iOS5. Have a nice day or two wasting your time rebuilding your entire video and music collection. Don't fight it. Use iTunes for everything! Until we finally make iTunes a decent piece of digital media management software, then you'll have to do it all again."
Okay, rant over - Anyone out there with running iOS5 on a 1st gen iPad with the Mmm&v option checked and able to load a video manually (not through iTunes)? Any other thoughts?
    Thanks

Yea, i managed to fix my issue in a wild fashion way But I DONT suggest it to anyone.
I like to hear why it happened after upgrading iTunes and if there is any peaceful solution.
Bythe way, here is how i fixed it :
1-i checked "manually manage music and videos" checkbox and clicked on "Sync" button
2-It showed a threating message that it will erase my music and videos ,......
3-I clicked on OK button and let iTunes do any thing she said , but the second it started to delete my treasures from my iphone, i disconnected my phone by pulling USB cable.
Now i have my musics and videos untouched and got that Option enabled again and i can manage my Music/Videos and Books manually.

  • HT1535 my iphone is set to "manually manage music and videos" and it still does not allow me to add music from my other computers.

I have followed the steps in order to manually manage the music on my 3GS iphone. (used the latest version of itunes and my iphone is up to date with iOS5) and it still is not allowing me to add music from another computer.
when i plug it into the second computer, it is asking me to click "manually manage music and videos" again. when i do that, it says it is going to sync with this new library and erase all music that is already there. i dont want this to happen! i only want to add a few select songs from each library. I have waaayy to much to add and erase every time.
both of the computers i am using are PCs and have my itunes id for homesharing... please help me!

  • ITunes Unchecks Manually Manage Music and Videos.

Everytime I connect my iPhone 4 to my computer and open up iTunes, the "manually manage music and videos" option becomes unchecked so that I cannot add or delete any music from my iPhone.  When I check "manually manage music and videos" again, of course it wants to delete everything because it says I have my device synced to another library.  I have never synced my iPhone or plugged my iPhone in any other computer before.  I do not even use my iTunes library on my computer -- it is blank because I don't like iTunes and prefer to drag and drop files into my phone, which is what manually manage music and videos means, right?
It has become so annoying to have to delete all my files and reload them all again just to add one mp3 to the phone.  Then when I reconnect, it doesn't allow me to manually manage again.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes numerous times and it has not fixed the problem.  I have my iPhone set to not automatically open iTunes when it is connected to my computer.  I also have it set to not sync anything.  I am using Windows Vista.  Does anyone know what could be wrong?  Please help!

This post I found & pasted below seems to explain it best - this is only for Ipod (& Ipad?) the iPhone 4 will only let you add from 1 computer supposedly.  Basically IF YOU CHECK THE MANUALLY MANAGE BOX YOU CAN NOT SYNC WITHOUT ERASING AND ADDING, BUT YOU CAN DRAG & DROP FILES TO THE DEVICE INSTEAD
What is the "Manually Manage Music and Vidios" option on itunes + ipod?
When I connect my ipod on my computer theres this ipod page + 1 of the options is "Manually Manage Music and Videos". What does that do if i select it? The reason I'm asking is that I don't want to mess up my ipod if I do select it. + later I can't change it back. THANKS!

It is the best and easiest way to use your ipod.
When you manually manage your music you choose what to add and delete from the ipod.  You dont have to sync your ipod.
When it is on manual you can use your ipod on as many computers and itunes libraries as you want without losing any music off your ipod.
You just drag and drop the songs, videos and playlists you want from the itunes library to the ipods name.
Right click and delete what you dont want from the main playlists under the ipods name.
Nothing will ever be deleted or added until you direct it and you can safely use it on any computer.
If you click manually manage music nothing will change on your ipod as it is now until you physically add or delete things.
If you resync with an itunes library later, though, you have to be careful because anything not in that itunes library will be deleted off the ipod.  I always keep my ipod manually managed because I use it on several diff computers.
or you just highlight the 20 songs together and drag them in one action
some people are so lazy, lol
    Think if it this way
If it is manually managed and you go to your friends house you can use her itunes library which means basically getting music from any other itunes library you want.  Not just your own.

  • "manually manage music and videos" setting disabled after upgrading iTunes!

    Hello every one.
I used to manage my musics and videos manualy , so naturally "manually manage music and videos" check box was always "cheked"
Now after i upgrade my itunes to latest version (11.1.3.8), i find out that option is "Unchecked"!!
So i am not able to copy any music or video or book too my iphon !
If i try to enable that option again, it will clear my libraries and i will lose anything.
Why this happened? what can i do ? any workaround? seems like a bug to me. i didnt do anything just updated my itunes. that option was enabled on my iphone for like 3 years! now i just upgrade my iTunes and that check box is unchecked.
It seems stupid itunes think its another machine and says " it is synced with another library"
    Any suggestion please?

  • What does manually manage music and videos mean

What does this do or not do?

I didn't find this very helpful.  While the manual technically states what it means, these types of questions are typically looking for context, helpful hints about WHY you would use it and potential issues you might have if you used it or didn't use it.  Your snarkiness doesn't help either.  Some of us are looking for actual help with the entire feature.  So I've pasted what I found in the manual link you posted showed (for iPad 8.1) as well as a better answer I found on Yahoo.
You can also choose to manually manage content from iTunes by selecting that option in the iPad Summary pane. Then you can drag songs or videos from your iTunes library to iPad in iTunes. This is useful if your iTunes library contains more items than can fit on your iPad. Note: If you use iTunes Match, you can manually manage only video.

  • Cannot delete music from iPod nano (latest generation).  Have already selected "Manually Manage music and videos" but delete is unavailable from right click or Edit.

I have done everything I've seen recommended for deleting music (jncluding "manually manage").  Thanks for the assistance!!!

Did you Apply the change after selecting (checking the box for) Manually manage music and videos?
With the latest iTunes, if the sidebar is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
In the sidebar, select the iPod under DEVICES.  Click the toggle (to the left of iPod) to drop down the iPod's content list, indented under iPod.  Click on Music there.  Over to the right, the list of songs on the iPod is shown.  You can select songs there, right click on them, and select Delete from the contextual menu.  You can also select songs there, go up to the menu bar, and select Delete under Edit.  You can also select songs there, and just press the Delete key on the keyboard.
If you want to use automatic syncing, which is far more convenient than the manual method, and easily manage content on the iPod (add and remove songs), please post back.
