Song files in iTunes Music folder but not iTunes itself

I have some song files in my Music folder that used to be in iTunes, but now they are gone from iTunes itself (they are still in the folder). When I drag the songs from the folder to iTunes, nothing happens and the songs are not added. Is there any way to fix this or do I have to re-install iTunes?

What format are they? Are they purchased content from the iTunes Store?
Some formats are not recognized by iTunes. Also, for obvious reasons, some are imported into the Video and Movie sections.
If you try to add purchased content before authorizing the computer, they may not show up.
Where did these files come from? Are they from a backup?

The iTunes Media folder is set in Preferences > Advanced, and is the key to most iTunes folder organizational activities. So I doubt that the automatic deletion will work for files that are somewhere else within the folder structure.
However, I have not experimented with that issue in quite a while, so you are welcome to give it a try in iTunes 11.

Where did you download them from? Did you drag them from the Music folder to the Ringtones folder?
iOS devices use MPEG4 audio (AAC) for ringtones. Often these files end with .m4a, but the .m4r suffixe is generally used to denote a ringtone. iOS expects a ringtone to be less than 30 seconds in length and otherwise the only other restriction is that it's an AAC audio file.
You can make your own ringtones simply enough with any audio editing application on the Mac. Just create an MPEG4 audio stream, give it the suffice .m4r, and drag it into iTunes.

Files showing up in iTunes Music folder, but not in iTunes

I just transferred a bunch of music into my iTunes Music folder on a new laptop, but it's not showing up in iTunes. If I open each file manually, it'll show up fine, but I've got enough music that it would take forever. Is there a quick way to fix this? (I'm running Vista, in case that's relevant.)

File > Add Folder to Library, and point it to the music folder. It will scan the folder and all subfolders, and anything that is not already in the library will be added.

Music in itunes music folder but not recognized in itunes?

So a few days back my Itunes library crashed. Itunes tried to recover it, but only recovered part of my library and then told me my library was damaged. So long story short, after several different attempts to get all my songs back into Itunes, here is the crossroad that I am at now.
I have all my songs in the Itunes music folder. But for some reason, none of those songs are being recognized in Itunes when it opens up. Any advice on how to get it to recognized in Itunes instead of having an empty library? Thanks in advance for all your help, this is has been a HUGE headache to say the least.

Move the existing iTunes folder to another location while iTunes isn't running, and then drag it into the open iTunes window. iTunes does not look at the content of the iTunes music folder directly to determine what is in the library; it accesses a support file and shows the content referenced by that file. The Mac OS X version of iTunes places content added to the iTunes library into the iTunes music folder by default.
This method will not preserve playcounts and other information associated with the songs, which is stored in a support file and not with the songs.

Duplicates in iTunes Music Folder but not in iTunes

If this has been addressed already, please forgive me, but in my User>Music>iTunes Music Folder each of over 6000 songs has a duplicate.
They don't show up as duplicates in iTunes or under Show Duplicates.
Is there anyway I can get rid of the 6000+ extra tunes other than clicking on each duplicate and dragging it to the trash?

I started over by trashing everything in my User > iTunes file and relaunched iTunes.
Then I went to iTunes Menu > File > Add to Library where I re-imported all of my tunes into iTunes from by backup file on my external hard drive.
I then Consolidated the library (whatever that means); now, I'm back in business.

Multiple logins sharing music folder, but not Library

I recently bought a new iMac for me and my wife. Our last one we shared the login, but now we each want our seperate logins, but we listen to the same music. We both buy our own CD's, but we always used to listen to them on the old iMac, and had the files transferred to both of our iPods. But under seperate logins, there are issues.
The problem happens when one person imports a CD, the other persons Library doesn't get updated, even if you are sharing the folder where the music goes.
This is also a problem becuase if a user imports a cd, another user can't put an image on the album art for that album.
Is there a way to choose where the Library file goes, or choose which one I want iTunes to use, rather than iTunes telling me what it wants to choose (by forcing one in my home folder).
I believe this may fix the problem, because Apple's solution of doing a quick logout really won't work for me. Neither me, nor my wife, want to log out of our own account to import music, then to have to go back to our own account and drag and drop files into the library to have them update.
I seem to be having this same problem with iPhoto, but that will go on another forum.

Thanks for the advice. That is actually something I have done as a work around. Though it is inconvenient for me to have to login to her space and import in her iTunes, it is easier for me to navigate around and do the harder stuff. Works so far.
I really hope some person involved in the development of iTunes can address this and let you choose where all the files go, not just the music files.

It sounds like your issue here is that iTunes can not find the files for some of the songs you have brought into it. This happens occasionally even if the songs have not been moved from the location that iTunes places them on import or purchase. When you try to use the song, iTunes prompts you to find the file, as you have seen.
To find the file, use the information in this article to navigate through the iTunes media folders -

If you are still unable to locate the files, you may need to download them from the iTunes store again, or rip them from your CDs. See this article for assistance with downloading your past purchases -

Songs not showing up in the Music folder but in a playlist

Hi,
Something weird is happening with iTunes.
Just before upgrading to 10.5, I had a problem where after opening a M3U playlist from the finder, the playlist was added as a regular playlist.
I can play the songs, when I go in the Get Info of the file, I can see that the file has been copied to the iTunes Music folder.
But when I look for the new imported songs from the top Music Folder, then the songs don't show up.
I opened the iTunes Library XML file and the songs are correctly listed.
Any idea?

Sorry, just to clarify, this is my problem:
When I double click on a song from my computer, it plays in iTunes, but it is not copied into my music library. Also, when I import a audio cd, it imports but does not show up in the music library, nor can I click and drag it there or to my Iphone. In the past clicking on these tracks would automatically save it in my library. I noticed this problem last week perhaps after upgrading to iTunes 10.1.2.

I recently built a new computer, and wanted to put my music on it from my external hard drive, which contained my "iTunes Music Folder" from my old computer. However, when I add music from my external hard drive to my new computer's hard drive, it says it's copying it to the iTunes Music Folder (on my new comp), and says that it's "Analyzing Gapless Playback" and the like, but the only problem is, the music doesn't show up on my Library! And I've looked, all the music copied to the new iTunes Music Folder, but my library (in the iTunes program itself) remains a blank list! Does anyone know what the problem is, and what I can do to fix it? Thanks in advance.

I have a Dell that's running Windows XP. I have found that itunes is very temperamental. this works most of the time... except on my son's computer that's running Windows Vista.
Go to your library in iTunes. Then go up to file and try one of the options (import, add folder to library, or add file to library).
Adding a folder is the least work. You can add all the files from a folder with one click... if it works. Remember that itunes is temperamental.
If that doesn't work, try adding a file. The problem with that is that you have to go through the whole process for each and every file (song, movie, etc).
Sometimes the only thing that works is to import.
I haven't gotten iTunes to work on my son's computer (Windows Vista).
I can't get support from apple in any way at all! They are good about creating electronics that appeal to us But they are lousy at support. If anyone figures out how to access support (where you can actually contact Apple) please let me know ([email protected]). I've been trying for 6 months.

Yes it would, possibly even brick it.
Have successfully connected my ipod nano with iTunes so looks like the device driver is working.
Can I use my ipod nano USB connector to check?
It is not much help to you, since the device that you need still not recognized.
Anyway looks like I may have to swallow the loss of data. Have set-up a call for tomorrow with Apple support so will wait until after this before doing the factory restore!

Nothing shows up on my Desktop. I can put a file into the Desktop folder but it will not appear on the DTop. The HarDrive is not on the DTop either.

You can temporarily hide the crap on your desktop. Edit the CreateDesktop key in com.apple.finder:
defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool false && killall Finder
Then, to get my clutter back:
defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop -bool true && killall Finder
