Song with Editing Question

I am trying to figure out how to take vocals out or tune down and just, for fun, put goofy lyrics on top of the beat. I have heard numerous times people doing this on the radio, etc.
I know how to select the song in garage band and just drag it over into garage band to see the track but now what do i do to turn the vocals off or down to where you cannot hear them?
Thanks for the help!

this really isn't a GB question, and i don't use audacity so i can't offer a step by step. you'd need to D/L it and read its docs to find those two features (invert and mono). you can find a link here:

  • Can you help with editing question?

I'll try and word this as best I can. I want to add some drum fills to and already recorded drum track. In the editor, notes appear on the staff where I have tapped in some cymbals. I noticed that when I click on a particular note it sounds according to where it is on the staff. Different lines or spaces mean different drums. I can drag an existing note to a place where I want it and use the dragged note to create another drum sound.
Question: How can I make a note appear on the staff from scratch, so to speak? I would like to not have to drag existing notes to other spots in the tune. I would like to create a new note in a certain spot and then use it for what ever drum sound according to the staff I want.
    I hope this makes sense.
    Thanks

  • Silly question - if I upgrade can I take my songs with me

Hopefully this is a dumb question. I currently have a 20 GB ipod color. If I wish to upgrade at some point in the future to a video ipod, will I have to pay again for the content that I purchased since Itunes is linked to one ipod?
    Thanks

No, as long as the songs are still in iTunes. You can use the songs with as many of your own iPods as you like.

  • Is there a way to overwrite the ORIGINAL songs with my iTunes library info?

    Hi there,
I would like to know if there is a way to overwrite the original songs with my iTunes library info? What I mean is, I have MANY songs that I have transferred to iTunes (and were obviously not purchased from iTunes) and I always put the info (such as the album name, the album art, artist, composer, etc.) and it leaves the original song (like the songs that are in "My music" section that is in "My Documents") with the same info. For example : The song that I put into the library will be "chamiionaire feastureing flip"... and in the iTunes, I put it as "Chamillionaire ft. Lil Flip". How do I make it so that it replaces the "original" info (located in my documents) with the info I put in?

Same question. Used to have an iPod. Lost it (best digital player ever), now I use other portable device. The mp3 files have their id3tag edited in the original file, but the .m4a don't!.
Want to know someway to write the info from the library to the original .m4a files.

  • Relinking songs with files on external HD

I recently downloaded the newest iTunes version. I have over 16,000 songs in iTunes, located on an external HD.
I opened iTunes today to sync my iPod (I rarely open iTunes - matter of fact, its been maybe 5 months since I last had it open), and every file I have has lost its link. I get the dreaded exclamation point.
When I click on a song, I get this warning:
"The song """" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
I also have about 30 playlists each containing 100 or more songs - there is a lot of time spent in organizing these.
Apple support told me to unhook my external, delete my entire library, then hook my external back up and go to file, then add folder to library. I lose all of my playlists, etc though. Plus, it is not in one clean folder - I have folders by artist that require you to go to each individual one.
Here's my question (and I'm not sure how to do this, but heard you can): Can you bring up a calendar and select a date in the past to make your PC think it is from that day and time. For instance, if my iTunes was working on Nov. 25th of last year, can I select that day as the day my computer will think it is, essentially giving me an earlier version of iTunes and having the song addresses in tact?
If this will not help, is there any easy way to reallign the song with its file on my external?
Thanks in advance....frustrated because this will be the 3rd time I've had to potentially rebuild my iTunes.

If using Win XP, remap the drive letter to match the drive letter in iTunes.
Find location mapped in iTunes: Select a song, right click and select "Get Info"
the lower part should display "Where: G:\..." where G is the drive letter of the external HD.
    Remap Drive Letter:
    Start -> Control Panel -> Performance & Maintenance -> Administrative Tools ->
    Computer Management -> Disk Management
Select the external hard drive letter, right click then select "Change Drive Letter and Paths" -> Click on "Change..." Select the drive letter that matches iTunes and click "OK"
This has worked for me with may laptop.

  • When I import a CD album that includes songs with co-artists, the album is saved once with all of the songs with the main artist only, and then one album for each song with a different co-artist.  How can I avoid that or fix that result after the fact.

When I import a CD ablum that includes songs with co-artists, the album is saved once under the album name with all the songs from the main artist; then each song with a different co-artist is saved separately under the album title with just that song.  Who do I prevent that or fix it after the fact, i.e., copy the single songs to the main album?

  • When turned on MacBook a icon of a folder with a question mark in it keeps flashing, what does this mean?

MacBook turns on but doesn't go to home screen, instead a folder icon with a question mark on it keeps flashing.

It means that your mac is unable to boot, try doing a safe boot http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455 first, if that does not work insert your OSX disc (the one that came with your mac) and boot to that, post back with a report.
Is your backup 'bootable' (Carbon Copy or SuperDuper) or non-'bootable' (Time Machine)

  • My MacBook Pro won't start - it just displays a grey screen with flashing icon of a folder with a question mark in the middle. Help.

It started while I was using Adobe InDesign, and that program froze, then crashed. When I tried to reopen the program, the error message I received was simply "Error: 16".
I tried to take a screen shot of the error message for reference, and it gave me a message saying I couldn't because I didn't have access to the files where it would normally store the shot.
Attached to my computer at the time was my Seagate Free Agent Go-Flex for Mac backup drive.
So, I closed any open applications, and restarted my computer. But it wouldn't restart. It only displays a grey screen with a flashing icon in the middle of a folder with a question mark on it.
I have no idea what happened - I wasn't using the machine any differently than usual, and it only had a few basic applicaitons open in addition to InDesign (like Preview, Text Edit, Microsoft Word, iCal).
I have MacKeeper on my MacBook, and I keep it clean.
Does anyone out there know what this flashing icon indicates, and if there is anything I can try on my own to fix it?
    Thanks.

Well that explains it, MacKeeper is almost malware.

Search the forums here for "MacKeeper" they will tell the whole story, crapware.
Disconnect all drives, follow the "Grey Screen" instructions and hold Shift key down while booting, if you get into OS X , immediatly backup your files to another drive and disconnect.
In my opinion you should first check to make sure you have a backup of your data, then just erase the entire internal drive (hold c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility), reinstall OS X, same user name, update to 10.6.8, c boot off the 10.6 and Repair Disk (to fix a update error) install your programs and finally return files from backup into the same main user folders like before (Music, Docs, Pictures etc.)
A pain it is, but you've hosed your system and in the process you might as well rebuild everything and have a fast machine again. So happens to clear MacKrapper, uninstall CS5 and any other junk in your system at the same time. Fresh, clean, lean and mean.
Learn to Carbon Copy Cloner to a external drive that new pristine boot drive, you can hold the option key and boot from it (even update it), which is a real bacon saver when something like this happens.  Also it's free to use, donations accepted.

  • My MacBook Pro Hard Drive recently gave me the gray folder with the question mark of death. Even as

My MacBook Pro Hard Drive recently gave me the gray folder with the question mark of death. Even as a Mac Newbie/Novice, I successfully installed a new hard drive and the OS (10.6.8) software from my installation discs. I have, however, lost the ability to play video using the spacebar and I have no idea on the steps necessary to correct this seemingly simple technical blip. .Here's my system overview:Model Name:     MacBook Pro Model Identifier:     MacBookPro6,2 Processor Name: Intel Core i5 Processor Speed:     2.4 GHz Number Of Processors:     1 Total Number Of Cores:     2 L2 Cache (per core):     256 KB L3 Cache:     3 MB Memory:     4 GB Processor Interconnect Speed:     4.8 GT/s.
I am using the Premiere Pro CS5 NLE (with the 5.0.4 updates), and I have tried to reinstall the software (which is actually the Production Premium package) several times, but I still cannot use the spacebar (or any method) to play any of my imported videos.
PLEASE HELP in any way you can!
Prior to having to replace my hard drive, my software was working just fine. No problems at all. But now, it seems that I can't get it to play whatever type of file I import.
Again, I am a newbie to the Mac, so any and all correctional/repair assistance needs to be expalined as if I were a child :  )
I would hate to try to revert to considering the sophmoric Final Cut Pro X editing software package, but I've got to do something to be able to get back to my editing activities.

Recovery Mode presents you with, among other things, Disk Utility. When you open that, if the internal shows up at all, first try to "Repair DIsk." If that doesn't work but if the "Media" line is present, try to format and partition it with a GUID partition table (understand that you will be erasing the contents of your internal). Then try to reinstall the OS. If that doesn't work, and since your Retina MBP didn't come with a DVD drive or DVDs, you'll need to try a hardware test using these instructions from Apple (short version: shut down, press the power button and hold down the "D" key). If none of those things work, let's hope you either have AppleCare or your warranty has some life left because the SSD in your rMBP is proprietary and expensive. You'll need to bring it to an Apple Genius for evaluation.

This is good for me but what happened?
I don't understand the question...  Did something happen that you think should not have happened?
It took such a long time to sync, because iTunes was converting songs with bit-rate higher than 128 kbps "on the fly" while syncing.  That takes much longer than just syncing the songs.
Also, since you have so much space on your iPod (compared to the size of your music library), you should not use that "convert to 128 kbps AAC" setting.  For songs that are encoded higher than 128 kbps, the conversion reduces sound quality.  You may want to uncheck Sync Music and Apply, to remove the songs on the iPod currently, and then sync it all again without the "convert" setting checked this time.

  • Playlists containing songs with titles starting with non-alphabetical characters do not get transferred at all

I was really happy about how the desktop manager lets me choose the songs from my itunes library by playlists! this is smart! I'm also happy to see the playbook render asian characters properly (unlike my experience on the bold!)
However, I have a lot of songs which have titles that begin with non-alphabetical characters, ie asian characters. For all playlists which contains such songs, those songs do not get transferred onto the playbook AT ALL. For example, I have one playlist which contains only songs with titles beginning with asian characters - this playlist was transferred but it is shown as containing zero songs! When I browse my song library by artist/album, I can find all those songs that should be in that/those playlists.
    Can this be fixed?
    thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

as it turns out, it kind of got fixed by itself. what i did (i think, since i have not definitively verified) was i went to browse "all songs" wherein i noticed all thoses songs starting with asian characters seemed to show correctly. then i went back to the playlists in question, and viola!
clearly there is a bug or two in the music player somewhere regarding these title characters. but rim has more urgent things to resolve i guess - like my auto screen lock is still not working!

  • Songs with the same album art not grouped together in iTunes for Windows

Brand new iTunes user here - do not yet have an iPod! (Needed some music only on iTunes)
When I first started up iTunes, it imported all of my music I already had on my computer. A few of them are soundtracks with different artists.
When they are shown in the iTunes library, the soundtracks have been broken up by Artist instead of staying as a whole album. How do I get the songs back together as one album? I found the folder on my computer where they are stored and combined them there, but they are still separate in the iTunes library.
    Thanks from a total newbie!

Mark the tracks on the album as "Part of a compilation" and fill in the Album Artist field as "Various Artists". Click on the first track of your album to highlight it, hold down the shift key and click on the last track to highlight everything in between. Right click on the selection and choose Get Info. You'll get a message asking if you want to edit multiple items, say yes. If you are using iTunes 8 in the box that opens go to the Options tab and change "part of a compilation" to Yes and choose OK.
Also in your library click on the title bar of album column to bring all the tracks in the same album together. If you keep clicking in the title you can choose it to sort by Album, Album by Artist or Album by Year. Clicking on the little triangle on the right side of the column header changes the sort direction. Pointing up and the column is sorted in Ascending order (A to Z). Pointing down and the column is sorted in Descending order (Z to A).

  • Getting a flashing folder with a question mark when starting Imac.

I got this flashing folder with a question mark on it when starting my Imac this morning. Im running on Osx 10.6. I put it in target disc mode and connected it to my macbook pro. I opened the disc utility app on the macbook and found my imac. I "verified" it and found an error. When I clicked "repair" the disc utility app froze and crashed. When I opened it again my Imac didn't show up. I've restarted both computers several times with no luck. Whats my next step?

    Hi.
Try restarting your iMac while holding down the option (alt) key until the spinng gear appears.  You should momentarily be presented with a list of startup drives to select.
Choose Macintosh HD (your normal startup disk drive) and click the right-arrow.
When your iMac boots, go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and again select your normal startup disk. Then click Restart.
    I hope this is helpful.
EDIT - disconnect the machines from each other first.

  • Too Many disk I/O tasks (-10022) error playing song after edits

I have been fighting Logic 9 throwing the "Too Many disk I/O tasks (Elastic Audio) (-10022)" error when playing back a song with 12 tracks of audio AFTER I cut across 8 tracks (of drums) and move regions around. The Disk I/O indicator never shows more than 1-2 bars, tops when this error is thrown. While writing this up and troubleshooting, the problem has seemed to sort itself out, but only after doing some peculiar steps.
    *System is MacPro 2x2.26 Quad-Core, 8GB RAM, Mackie Onyx 1620 recording to 500GB WD MyBook Pro over FW800. I/O Buffer = 128.
    1) Grouped the 8 tracks of drums (there are 3 takes on each track). Play back song. No problems.
    2) Cut the drums at bars 73, 81, 105 and 109.
    3) Drag-copied the regions from bars 105-109 to 73-81.
    4) Playback song, error thrown at bar 70
    5) Increase buffer size to 256.
    6) Playback song, error thrown at bar 70
    7) Increase buffer size to 512.
    8) Playback song, error thrown at bar 70
    - Thought this might be a disk problem.
    9) I copied the project with all the files to the internal Seagate and open the project.
    10) Playback song, error thrown at bar 70
    - Thinking this is not a disk problem.
    11) Open the project on the original WD external drive.
    12) Mute all regions an all drum tracks except the kick.
    13) The song plays back normally.
    14) Un-mute regions on 1 track and playback and repeat for each track.
    15) The song plays back normally until the 8th drum track is un-muted, then the error is thrown.
    16) Mute and un-mute the regions on 8th drum track.
    17) The song now plays back normally. Error no longer thrown.
Looks like after making the edits, muting all the regions and un-muting them 1 by one might have cleared this up right away.
Is anyone else is experiencing something similar? If so, how are you working around this?

No, didn't solve it yet, after I'm done completing work to meet a deadline, I will do some experimenting and see what I can figure out. But so far I've had this phasing issue occur in two different sessions on two different rigs (both Mac Pro dual-quad core with lotsa RAM)...
One test that anyone could try... to really max it out... take one single source and record it onto 20 tracks at once... or I guess you could just record one track and then duplicate it 19 times, whatever. Group all these tracks, keep `em all at the same level. Then take a listen to all tracks at once using some good headphones.
Then put all the tracks in flex mode and do some flexing, flex every single quarter note this way and that way for three full measures or so, whatever. Then play it back again with headphones. If you hear ANY hint of phase shifting, then you are experiencing what I am experiencing.
For anyone who might not be familiar with the "phase shifting" sound I speak of, it pretty much will sound as if you are running your tracks through a classic "phase shifter" effect pedal or whatever. If using headphones, it'll seem like the audio starts swirling around in your head like some wacky stereo effect, frequency response will change and shift, etc.
I've noted that I have not always heard phase issues when flexing, it seem to be a bit inconsistent. It may be because I've been working in some very large sessions, maybe in my situations Logic was already being heavily taxed and then the extra flexing just put it over the edge. Don't know. Will do some testing perhaps next week.
But, I'd say everyone should be careful about this before bouncing forever to disk and then maybe deleting all your old raw audio, because if you permanently write in some wacky phase shifting between your group of drum tracks and have no original raw files left, you'll be in very big trouble... I don't think there would be any way to fix that. In a professional level mix, that type of issue would stick out like a sore thumb. I guess one fix would be to apply a phase shifter effect across the entire drum bus... on purpose... as some sort of artistic statement... hey, it might sound cool!
This whole issue has made me realize how incredibly important it is for DAW tracks to remain truly phase locked at all times. Been working with DAWs for years now and never really thought about it. In one regard, this is a lot to ask... to make sure your 30-odd tracks or whatever are always dead in time with each other, to the sample. It's certainly of critical importance, at least for multiple tracks of the same exact source (like when you have 12 mics on a drum kit etc).
Actually, perfect time synch is just as critical for even a mere TWO mics on a given source... any stereo recording. Once one track goes out of "synch" with the other, even by a minute amount, just for a short amount of time, you will HEAR it.,.. and it won't be good... unless you desire a wacky phase shifting effect.
