Sony a700 dSLR, iPhoto RAW support

I recently purchased a Sony a700 dSLR. jpeg files import into iPhoto without trouble. I want to try to use RAW files but they can not be imported. The camera supported list has the Sony a100 but not the a700. Is there a plan to support the a700 in the future on iPhoto or Aperture.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
No one on this board has any idea what Apple's plans for the future are. It's a user-to-user forum.
RAW support is a function of the OS, not either application.
Let them know you want it though:

  • Canon 60D and Aperture/iPhoto - RAW support?

I realize this camera isn't supported yet, so my question is really how long does it typically take Apple to begin supporting new RAW files after a camera's release? It's been about two months for this one :/ Month? Two months? Three months? Is a pattern documented anywhere?
Photoshop has supported the 60D for about a month now. That's frustrating.

I would be interested in seeing anything history of release dates and RAW file support dates also. I am a newbie with only a S95 but also interested in when Apple will release RAW support for my camera [it came out approximately the same time as the 60D]. I have been advised to be patient...it will happen. My issue is that I download a 30 day trial of Aperture before I realized at the moment I can only try it out on jpegs, not RAW. I just hope it happens before my 30 trial runs out.
I did put in a request through the Aperture comment function but was advised it was probably unnecessary since Apple is well aware of new Canon and Nikon cameras.

  • Camera Raw Support

I recently got the Canon xsi dSLR. I was pleased to see that Apple has an update to open the raw files in iphoto. I was unhappy to then find out it's only for iphoto 8, not iphoto 6. Does Apple usually stop supporting the previous generation of iphoto? I am disappointed, as I have been able to update Photoshop Elements 4 to open the files, but I then have an extra step to move them to iphoto.

RAW support is a bit confused and murky at the moment. Prior to the release of Aperture 2 it was based in the Operating System, and so an update worked for all apps that ran on that OS. However, this meant that it was taking very long for Aperture (and iPhoto) to support newer cameras. So now the RAW support is built-in to the applications. iPhoto 08 is geared to this, but v6 seems not to be. Therefore there it would require an update to the Operating System to add new cameras to v6. OS 10.4 has not been updated since 10.5 was released, and I wouldn't expect it to be. Therefore I would not expect new cameras to be added to v6.
That said, I don't work for Apple, I'm just a User, like yourself. My comments are simply based on watching this unfold over the last several months.

  • Panasonic FZ8 raw support

The Panasonic DMC-FZ8 is a very capable compact bridge camera, with full manual control and some features you don't even find in most DSLRs. Raw support within LR would be welcome.
    Thanks for listening
    John

Any new camera will get added. But the addition will come in sync with ACR updates and one mainly just has to wait for it.

  • IPHOTO Sony RAW Support

I have a Sony Alpha 300 camera. When will Apple support editing RAW files from this camera?

This is only a users forum - you will have to ask Apple that question

  • Import RAW images from Sony A100 DSLR?

iPhoto 6 does not import RAW images taken with my Sony A100 DSLR. I can view the images with preview, so apparently Mac OS X knows how to handle them. But, iPhoto just says there are no pictures to import.
I installed the Aperture trial, and it handled the RAW images, as does the Adobe Lightroom beta4. But, not iPhoto6.
I am running all the latest patches, with 10.4.8 on a MacBook Pro.
Does RAW work for anyone else with this camera? Any suggestions for workarounds?

I messed around with this a bit more and found that if I manually import the RAW images, it works fine. But, iPhoto still does not recognize new pictures and import them automatically.
I can also see them in Finder and Preview, so I know the OS support is up to date. Also, I tried it on my Mac Mini, and the mini recognized the raw pictures and imported them as I would expect.
The RAW updater only mentions Canon, Nikon, and Pentax as being addressed. I did install it, but it may not be necessary.
This article on Apple's site: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303554
says you need 10.4.8 to support Sony RAW pictures.

  • Sony NEW RX10 & iPhoto Cant open RAW files

Hey Guys, I know that not ALL RAW files are equal! I just picked up a NEW SONY RX10 and its shooting RAW files in Sony's ARW format.. I see that the NEW a7's are updated in OSX updates, Im assuming that the a7's and the New RX10 are the same ARW format, but I cant open these files in Preview and Iphoto wont see them either! Im using OSX 10.8.5 (ML) and Iphoto 11 (9.4.3) (720.91) Is anyone else having this issue with a RX10 or newer Sony camera with ARW files... Please reply! I really would like to shoot in RAW and use iPhoto to edit! I guess not ALL SONY .ARW are equal????

Im assuming that the a7's and the New RX10 are the same ARW format,
There you go - that is an incorrect assumption (as most assumptions are - as you know when you assume you make an ***ume out of ***ume & assume) - every RAW format for every camera is different and requires specific support for tha tcamera - notice in the support list that many different cameras in the same family are listed seperatly
Usually Apple releases Sony RAW support pretty quickly since Sony is a major manfactuer of consumer and professional cameras
Tell Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
The Sony software that came with the camera may help (although my experiance is that Sony has poor to non-existance support for Macs) and possible the Adobe RAW converter can help until Apple releases the required update
And it is very possible that the update will only apply to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5.x so it is possible that you will have to upgrade your OS and iPhoto (both free) - when you do be sure to backup first
The current Mavericks list is at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5955

  • Sony A700 compressed RAW lossless or lossy?

Considering that ACR now supports compressed RAW files from the new Sony A700, can anyone at Adobe clarify if the cRAW (compressed RAW) files are lossy or lossless. I would ask Sony directly if I knew how.

I did not promise to tell you if the compression is lossless based on that file. I asked for a copy as a favour, for I'd like to take a closer look at such a file.
Perhaps I can determine the kind of compression.

  • Sony a55 raw support

    Hi,
Does anybody know hen I should expect iPhoto to support raw images from my new sony a55? seems rather odd as the NEX cameras has similar software and formats so i guess it must be a simple version number bump. Am I looking at a new version of iPhoto or a change to the OS, does the 10.6.5 upcoming build offer any hope?
    Thanks,
    Gerard

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
No one knows, I'm afraid, outside of Apple.
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback and let them know you want it.
rather odd as the NEX cameras has similar software and formats so i guess it must be a simple version number bump.
Not at all. The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Therefore the Raw for every camera model needs to be added individually.

  • Sony NEX-3 Raw Support

How is it possible that Aperture 3 does not support the raw format of the Sony NEX-3 camera? It's one of the hottest DSLR available right now do to it's compact size and has been on the market for nearly 6 months. No RAW support?
I'd rather take my camera back than have to switch to lightroom which added support 3 months ago…
Any suggestions? Anyone else have this camera? What can I do? I need a temporary work around, I MUST shoot in raw.

You could batch convert the files with Adobe Camera Raw to DNG, or maybe the software provided will convert them DNG for you. http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/
I currently have a bunch of files that I converted to DNG from NEF when I was using Lightroom, and Aperture 3 reads them just fine.
I know its a extra step, but until apple release a update to their RAW engine its a solution.

  • HT4757 When will Apple iPhoto/Aperture support the new Leica V-Lux 4 camera RAW format ?

I just bought a Leica Vlux-4 and found that the current verisons of Aperture and iPhoto do not reconize the RAW files like they do for earlier versions and all of the Canon & Nikon DSLR's.  I see from the support doc that Apple supports the Vlux-1 and 2, so when will RAW support be added for the Vlux-4 ?
I dont want to move to Lightroom but it already supports the Vlux-4 camera !
    Thanks.

while this all may be true,
it is all speculation, and we are not supposed to speculate here; Apple does not publish the reasons for missing raw support, and for the Vlux-4 it is early days yet. There may very well be a raw update including your camera soon. The only difference I see, is that the the Vlux-1 & 2 did not come with Lightroom included, only with PSE, and the support stopped, when Lightroom was included - the direct competition to Aperture.
Send feedback to Apple to let them know!

  • 4.2 Sony A700 support?

The new Sony A700 will have two forms of RAW files, a regular RAW and a comressed RAW. will 4.2 support both forms?
    Bob Mc

I have PS Elements 4.0 for Mac, upgraded to 4.0.1 via download. 4.0.1 is required in order for ACR 4.2 to install correctly. I received confirmation that 4.0.1 was installed correctly. Then all that is supposed to be necessary is for ACR (Camera Raw) 4.2 to be put into the correct plugin folder in place of ACR 3.3 (or whatever was there). Adobe's instructions are for the old ACR to be put in a folder on the Desktop, which is what I did. As I said, I followed Adobe's installation instructions exactly, and Adobe phone support confirmed that ACR 4.2 was in the right folder. Nevertheless, neither Bridge nor Elements can "see" Camera Raw, apparently. Adobe Support was unable to find anything wrong, and all the standard fixes like reinstallation, formatting the hard drive, cleaning caches, etc. failed to fix anything. I think it is becoming obvious that something prevents ACR 4.2 from working on some Macs. Adobe's only solution was to convert Raw files to DNGs and open them with some other Raw developer, like the older ACR 3.x. In my opinion, this is a pretty sorry fix. I bought Elements 4.0 specifically in order to run ACR 4.2, which is needed to support the Sony A700.

  • Will Aperture 3.6 eventually provide raw support to Sony a5100

I have an iMac running OS X Maverick 10,9,5, and currently use Aperture 3.5.1 with all of its latest RAW updates.  I am considering updating to Yosemite to get Aperture 3.6.  I note that so far 3.6 does not provide RAW support to the Sony a5100.  Lightroom does have RAW support for this camera, and I can get Lightroom and keep Maverick.  However, I like Aperture and would like to continue using it.  But will the new version on Yosemite ever get RAW support for my camera?  I also see from other posts that many are having problems with both Yosemite and with Aperture 3.6.  I would need some reassurance before taking the step to a new OS X.  I need some advice about what to do.
    Thanks

But will the new version on Yosemite ever get RAW support for my camera?
We cannot tell you this, but any new Raw Support will most likely only be available on Yosemite.
The latest Digital Raw Compatibility Update was only for Yosemite, Aperture 3.6, and iPhoto 9., see:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1777?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
I need some advice about what to do.
Upgrade, but don't burn your bridges. I'd keep a full TimeMachine backup or a bootable clone of your system as it is now, so you can easily revert to the previous version.

  • Cant import raw files from sony rx1003 into iPhoto

Cant import raw files from sony rx1003 into iPhoto.  with rx1002 no problem! any suggestions?

Every model of a manufacture's camera have a different  RAW format and, therefore, you'll have to wait until Apple receives the necessary information from Sony so they can create a RAW Compatibility Updater that includes that model.
In the meantime you can try the Adobe RAW converter with might support that camera model to create a dmg file that iPhoto will recognize and begging shooting the highest resolution jpegs until the updater is released.
