Sony arw 2.3 files and iPhoto

I use an iMac running O.S. 10.8.3 and iPhoto version 9.4.3. I also use Pixelmator 2.1.4.
I have been using a Sony A200 DSLR camera and have had no problems importing Raw files to either of the applications listed above.
However, when I started using a new Sony A58 SLT camera I could not import the Raw (ARW2.3) images.
I could see them as thumbnails on the camera but that was it.
Any solutions out there???

The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400. Or, in your case the ARW produced by the A200 is not the same as the one produced by your A58. Therefore the Raw for every camera model needs to be added individually, for each model of camera and each brand.

Photo Files and iPhoto Questions

I have a few questions in relation to my actual picture files and when they are imported into iPhoto (on my mac).
Intro: Let me catch you up on my situation, I have all my picture files (around 8000 of them!) on my time capsule; most of them are organized in their own folders (such as halloween 2011 and christmas 2010) but some of them are unsorted in their own folders (such as unsorted 2012 and moms cam). I've imported all these into iPhoto, the folders all appear as events, and I have applied faces and locations to almost all of them (about 85%). Now my questions:
1: If I delete/move some pictures from my time capsule around the folders (so I move some picture from moms cam to halloween 2012 and thanksgiving 2012 folders), how do I sync this with iPhoto? (Ex. I have deleted some pictures from "my graduation" folder in my time capsule, but on the iphoto event for "my graduation", all the pics are there even the ones Ive deleted) Will I have to manually delete these from iphoto as well?

1 - is the Time Capsule being used as an external hard drive or as a Time Machine backup drive - you must not use it as both
2 - is the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" is checked ( - a managed library - default and strongly recommended) or have you unchecked i (a referenced library - which it sound like you have - this is strongly not recomended)
for your question 1, if you have a referenced library - iPhoto never does anything outside of its database - the iPhoto library - and it does not "sync" or watch external folders - if you choose to manage the originals then you must do that - one of the many reasons that a referenced library is not recommended is that improting is more difficult and deleting is more difficult
for question 2, if you delete photos from iPhoto then they and all of their associated data is gone - if you reimport the "same" photo, its is totally new to iPhoto - you are starting from scratch with it
for your question 3 - this is not a matter of chance - you either have a referenced library or a managed library which you choose - and in a referenced library the originals are not copied to the iPhoto library - for a managed library they are and are stored in the masters or originals folder in iPhoto depending on your version of iPhoto which you do not share as bit for bit copies of the originals

Canon D1X Raw Files and IPhoto 6.0.6

I'm unable to load Raw files into IPhoto 6.0.6 from my Canon G1X on a Macbook Pro using OS 10.7.4.
I've resisted upgrading to a later version of IPhoto because of the negative comments about the later versions, and indeed never would as my existing version does all I need - except for this small problem, of course :-)
If anybody can provide a work-around so that I can read these Raw files in 6.0.6, I would be very grateful.

As long as you have a copy of the Library that's not upgraded...
Later versions of iphoto update the Library (to cope with added features and so on) and early versions cannot open the later version. So keep a copy of the library not updated and yes, you can go back.

PSD Files and iPhoto

I use PS Elements as my external editor for iPhoto. Usually, I'll just save the file back into iPhoto as a jpeg. Sometimes, however, I'll play around with layers in Elements and want to see that version in iPhoto. I know I can always flatten the image, convert to jpeg and save (or import) that version back into iPhoto.
But if I haven't finished with the layers so that I don't want to flatten the image, is it safe to import the layered psd file into iPhoto? (iPhoto help has a reference to not supporting files other than jpeg and tiff.) Does it make any difference if I have iPhoto preferences set to not make a copy of imported files in iPhoto, so the original file remains outside iPhoto, or (ii) I use the File-Import method in iPhoto versus dragging and dropping (someone recently tried to persuade me that dragging and dropping was dangerous, whereas an Apple Genius told me it made no difference)?
And for subequent editing in Elements, does it make any difference if I open the iPhoto file in Elements by double-clicking or by dragging it on to the Elements icon in the dock?

As you've found out layered Photoshop files are supported. Once you have them imported into iPhoto and do more editing, thru iPhoto of course, (i.e. setup PS as the editor of choice when double clicking on a thumbnail) all you need to do is a normal save and it'll be saved and the thumbnail updated.
I believe there's an issue with alpha layers however. I've never used them so am unsure the exact nature of the issue but I don't think iPhoto likes them much.
If you want to be able to use both iPhoto's editor and PS just revert back to "In Main Window" in the preferences and then when you want to use PS Control-click on the thumbnail and select "Use external editor" in the Contextual menu. That way you get the best of both worlds.

RAW files and iPhoto?

If I shoot in RAW and edit in iPhoto am I getting the benefit of editing a RAW file or does iPhoto make a jpeg copy of the RAW file that is acually the one being edited.

A jpg copy is created and edited. Most image management application that work with RAW create a jpg or tif copy for the editing, keeping the RAW file untouched.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

Photo files, and iPhoto (or comparable system)

I have this new mac - for a few weeks, and I want to access photos that are separated in file folders within a 250 gig external hard drive.
What I really wanted to do - was to watch the photos from these folders in a slideshow sort of way (like the front row should allow you to do)
The problem as I see it - to access a slideshow - I need to copy the files over to iPhoto -- but that defeats the purpose of keeping all these photos on an external hard drive, if I have to copy them onto my hard drive under iPhoto.
I have family coming over Wednesday (Day before Thanksgiving) and would really like to 'show off' some photo files without going through my canon camera softwear one picture at a time. Can anyone help me figure this small (but inconvenient) problem out?

Copy them over to iPhoto so you show the slide show and afterwards simply delete them from iPhoto.
There's another way to keep all user data on an external HD if you wish. In the Account pref panel if you unlock the padlock and highlight your account and then right-click on it an Advanced Options tab will display. Select this and you can point your /Users/account_name to an extenal location. This is what I do and keep all my /Users on a HD different from the boot Volume.

Sony ARW Raw from A700 and Lightroom 1.4

I have not seen this in the Forum, so I want to tell You of this problem.
After upgrading from Lightroom 1.3.1 to Lightroom 1.4 I got error messages in grid view randomly in maybe one in every 70 photo's When switching to Develop mode, these files gave the following message: "an unexpected end of file has occurred" and it was impossible to make changes in Develop mode. This did not happen in Lightroom 1.3.1. In fact I had made changes to these files the previous day in 1.3.1. After reading the messages at this Forum, I installed Lightroom 1.3.1 over the 1.4 configuration and the error messages were no longer there, so it were no corrupt files. I could devellop them in the Sony RAW converter without a problem.
Further I did a folder syngronisation and it imported al the files a seccond time, so I had 2 sets of photo's whith the same filenumber in te same folder. I am sure the "don't import expected duplicats" was on. I had to manualy delete them from the Library.
Has anybody got the same problem? Jan-Henk.

After reading other post I want to make it clear, I do not convert to DNG. The computer I use is a Pentium 4 dual core with 2 Gb memory.

MOV files and iPhoto

The digital video camera I have uses MOV files. I used to be able to upload them to iPhoto but now it no longer works. I've tried uploading to iMovie and also have tried Image Capture and nothing works. Is there a fix for this problem?

Question about how Mac OS X stores file information for iMovie and iPhoto

I'm relatively new to Macs (am using a 3yr old iMac and a new MBA running 10.6.4 and iLife 11) and I have this general question.
I'm using the iMac for a lot of Movie projects and photos. I've very quickly filled up my 500Gb hard drive and I don't understand why other than this:
I import a movie using iMovie and it's stored in an Events folder. I then make a project and it's stored in an Projects folder, I then share it to iTunes and it's stored in the iTunes Music/Movies folder. And I also see the movie in an iMovie Shared folder. In other words, it appears that a 2Gb movie (as an axample) becomes about 10Gb because it's saved in multiple places. Must I keep all of them?!
With iPhotos, I've imported about 6Gb of photos from my Windows PC. No problem. I copied across all the directories and then imported them into iPhoto. I then thought I could delete all the directories as the iPhoto folder became 24Gb in size! Not sure how but it seems that as well as keeping my original 6Gb of photo directories it's also put them into the iPhoto directory and somehow made it a big folder size?! If I delete the original folders (since they're now in the iPhoto app folder) then I can't actually browse the JPGs files can I except from within iPhoto only?
I've got about 80Gb of music, about 6Gb of photos and about 80Gb of movies. Somehow it's pretty much filled up 500Gb of hard drive (and very little other programs or files other than the normal iMac stuff it comes with) because of the way the Mac (iTunes, iMovie and iPhoto) seems to have the same thing copied everywhere.

I'll answer the iPhoto part for you.
If you use iPhoto in its default setting then the images are copied into the Library on import. Yes you can now delete the directories you have copied over.

Yes and no...
The point of iPhoto is that it's your Photo Manager. It's the "go-to" app when you want to do anything with your Photos. - View them, edit them, email them, print them, use them in other apps, upload them whatever - all of these things are done from iPhoto.
There are two advantages to working this way.
1. You get to work with your Photos and don't have to think about files. This means the organisation possibilities are much greater than just files in folders. You can use Keywording, Smart Searching, Albums, Events and a plethora of other bases for categorising and therefore find your pics.
2. iPhoto is integrated throughout the entire OS. That means your Library is available throughout the OS without iPhoto being open by means of Media Browsers. You can search your Library from a MEdia Browser and so on.
So, while, yes, the files are not browsable via the Finder, there's no need to. Everything you need to do can be done with iPhoto.
Want to edit the pics in something other than iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.

You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser

How do I not import RAW files into iPhoto

I shoot RAW + Jpeg with my cameras... Up until a recent upgrade to Mavericks... I would put the SD card in the iMac and it would import all the JPEGs, and then say something like 75 files could not be downloaded.
Those were the large RAW files and I would then just move them to an External Hard-drive and use Lightroom and Canon's DPP to edit them.
After the OS upgrade the RAW and JPEGs now both import into iPhoto and onto the Mac Hard-drive.
I can't seem to find a way to not import the RAW file into iPhoto. Is there something I am missing? I do not want those large RAW files wasting space on the mac, and I have notice iPhoto is really slow since the upgrade.

A. To move an iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
B. iPhoto and Raw
1. The Raw processing engine in iPhoto the same one used in Aperture, but with less fine control. (Think of the differences between Word and TextEdit, iMovie and Final Cut).
2. Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.
Further - and this is quite a consideration: Lightroom is not an editor. Like iPhoto it's a database app and images need to be imported, processed and exported from it. It occupies the same place in the workflow (manager/non-destructive processing) as iPhoto does so in makes zero sense to use both...

New to iPhoto: Database Corruption and iPhoto Package

Coming from the PC I'm used to individual files with Picasa and Photoshop and I'm confused about a few things:
1. Is the iPhoto database separate from the iPhoto package file that stores all of the images?
2. And if you were to lose your database because of corruption, do you lose all of your individual photos?
3. Or if the package somehow became corrupted, do you lose your original images?
4. Slightly off-topic -- does Aperture store the images separately or does it use the same "database package" concept as iPhoto?

Yes and No. It depends on the settings you choose. In the default setting both the photos and the database are contained within the Library Package. For more see below*.
A Package File is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to see inside? Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
2. And if you were to lose your database because of corruption, do you lose all of your individual photos?
No. The db is a couple of files inside the Library. The photos are at no more risk that when a file goes bad in any folder.
3. Or if the package somehow became corrupted, do you lose your original images?
There's no way for a package to become corrupted. Like I say, it's just a folder.
Of course, the protection for any data on your computer is a good up-to-date back up.

Yes and no. Depends on the settings you choose.
* And this is the below piece to see:
There are two kinds of Library: Managed and Referenced.
A +Managed library+, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. In this scenario iPhoto is responsible for File Management.
A +Referenced Library+ is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
*How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
*What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
*Some things to consider:*
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Re: thought I was importing RAW files into iPhoto 09

I've imported several hundred RAW files from my Canon T2i into iPhoto and when I went to open them in Photoshop Elements they are JPG files (new to Mac, switched from Windows). When I select an individual photo and select show extended photo info it says it is a CR2 file and 7.9MB (a RAW file). I've read many threads but my question is: Has all the data from the RAW file been lost and it's now compressed into a JPG file or can I somewho get that file back to it's original RAW format with all of it's info? And if I can, how??

No data has been lost. Your Raw files are unchanged in any way. This is a bit long but it might help explain things.
Processing Raw in iPhoto
When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically makes a jpeg Preview of the shot. Currently, this is what you re sending to Photoshop - read on.
Why? Because you can't do anything with Raw - can't print it, share it online, use it in other apps etc. So to allow you to use the file immediately the Preview is available.
You can, however, also process the Raw in iPhoto simply by editing it. The Raw processing engine in iPhoto the same one used in Aperture, but with less fine control. (Think of the differences between Word and TextEdit, iMovie and Final Cut). The output from the processing then replaces the preview.
You can choose to save your output as either jpeg or tiff in the iPhoto Preferences.
When you are processing Raw in iPhoto you will see the Raw badge on the bottom of the iPhoto Window

Note: After you have processed a Raw, subsequent edits to the photo are carried out on the processed jpeg (or tiff) not the Raw. If you want to go back to the original then you need to use the Photos -> Reprocess Raw command.
Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop.
But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto: You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway

Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:

Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
Now for the kludge: You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.

problems with .ARW files and auto toning
let me try to explain this because this has happened in past and never found a way to resolve but i lived with it
now that I have a Sony A7R the problem is more serious
Firstly i take pride it making the picture happen all in camera, i use DRO lvl 5 to get enough light, like when i'm shooting at dusk. DRO its like doing HDR but in a single file, it lightens the darks. in my camera i'm happy with results
but when I upload them to lightroom, they come out near black.
allow me to explain
lets say I import 100 images
i double check my preferences and everything is UNCHECKED when it comes to importing options, there is no auto toning, nothing.
as the images import i see a preview in the thumbnail which looks fine.
i double click on one to enlarge it, hence leave grid view.
for a brief 1 or 2 seconds, i see the full image in all its glory but than lightroom does something funny, it darkens the image
one by one as it inspects each image, if it was a DRO image it makes it too dark.
to make this clear, the image is perfect as it was in the beginning but after a few seconds lightroom for some reason thinks it needs to correct it.
how to prevent lightroom from doing this, i want the image exactly as it is, why must lightroom apply a correction>?
i think it has to do something with interpreting the raw file and lightroom applies its own algorithm.
but here is what i dont get.....before lightroom makes the change i'm able to witness the picture exactly as it was taken and want it unchanged..
now i have to tweak each file or find a profile for it which is added work.
any ideas how to prevent lightroom from ruining my images and just leave them as they were when first detected...
there are 2 phases...one is when it originally imports and they look fine
second is scanning each image and applying some kind of toning which darkens it too much.

i've disabled it now
thing is, there is no DRO jpg to download from the camera
its only ARW. so my understanding is when i use DRO setting, the camera makes changes to the ARW than lightroom somehow reads this from the ARW.
but then sadly reverts it to no DRO settings.
because i notice if i take normal picture in raw mode its dark but if i apply dro to it, it comes out brighter, yet when i d/l the image from camera to lightroom, which is an ARW - there are no jpgs. lightroom decides to mess it up
so in reality there is no point in using DRO because when i upload it lightroom removes it.
is there a way to tell lightroom to preserve the jpg preview as it first sees it.
its just lame, picture appears perfect...than lightroom does something, than bam, its ruined,.
what do i need to do to prevent lightroom from ruining the image? if it was good in the first place.
