"sort by" in Preview

Is there a way to get Preview to automatically sort multiple images by filename? I had used Preview on my PowerBook G4 for years with no problems viewing images (OS X 10.3.x), but now that I've got a new MacIntel with 10.4.7, whenever I open multiple images in Preview, the first two or three are what I would expect to find at the top, but then the file order jumps around and apparently has no order. I can ctrl-click to set it to sort by name, but "name" is already checked when I do that. So now when I want to view my photos, instead of apple-A, apple-O, I'm having to apple-A, apple-O, ctrl-click, move down, click. Since I do this a lot, it gets really old really fast. I just want my low numbers at the top and high numbers at the bottom. Any suggestions? Do I need to go back to an older version of Preview?

Hi, samiam00. Welcome to the Discussions.
This is a known issue with Preview. It seems to occur most often when one selects a discontiguous collection (in the sense of left-to-right, top to bottom) or random collection of images in a folder in Icon view, whether or not the folder containing the images has been set to be arranged by name, i.e. Finder > View > Arrange > By Name.
You might get better results by selecting the images in a folder in List view sorted by name. This seems to consistently produce a Preview window where the thumbnails are sorted by name.
Good luck!

  • Table.Sort only sorting records in preview pane

I have the following M query:
    let
        OrgIdParameter = Excel.CurrentWorkbook(){[Name="ClientFilter"]}[Content],
        OrgIdValue = OrgIdParameter{0}[Column2],
        Source = Sql.Database("JOHNSQLD53", "EnterpriseAnalytics"),
        dbo_vFactEngrgServiceLocMonthlyAsOfSnapshot = Source{[Schema="dbo",Item="vFactEngrgServiceLocMonthlyAsOfSnapshot"]}[Data],
        #"Filtered Rows" = Table.SelectRows(dbo_vFactEngrgServiceLocMonthlyAsOfSnapshot, each [BeProspectClientOrgId] = OrgIdValue),
        #"Sorted Rows" = Table.Sort(#"Filtered Rows",{{"SnapshotYear", Order.Ascending}})
    in
        #"Sorted Rows"
however, the sort is working on the records that show in the preview pane (about 36 records), then the data goes back to being unsorted in the rest of the table when loaded in power pivot (224 rows).
    any idea why?

I believe that Power Pivot does not reliably preserve the input sort of the data; this is a feature of the data model, not of Power Query.

  • Sorting & Organizing in Preview

    Hi-
In Tiger I was able to open multiple images in Preview, and them sort them by name, modified date, etc. In Leopard I can not seem to change the default method by which images are ordered. It doesn't appear that there is any type of view menu in the sidebar. Am I missing something?
    Thanks!

  • Windows 8.1, Office Home and Business 2013: This file can't be previewed because of an error in Microsoft ........... previewer

Previewer for office files is not working from the same application: i.e. can't preview Excel files when attempting to open one from Excel, same with Word and PowerPoint. I can preview all files from Outlook, and, funny, I can preview files other than Excel
from the Excel previewer, files other than Word from the Word previewer, etc.
I can preview all files from Explorer.
I've looked at previous threads and there are some with the same problem dating back to 2009, all UNSOLVED.
This is a new lap top, new Windows 8.1 and just-installed Office 2013, and 8.1 and Office have these persistent glitches.
Very frustrating to say the least.

    Hi CALQ59,
Unfortunately, the article you were referred to, by Melon, is simply an article that is explaining a behaviour (some would say bug) in Windows and the Office previewer system. There appears to be a limitation that occurs whereby, if you have an instance
of the Office application open, for which you would like to preview something in an Explorer window, it will not be able to preview the file. To be able to preview the file, this article states that you "must open another instance of the program to preview
the document." So, either open another instance of the Office application in question or quit any instances of the Office application in question and then preview the file of that same type in your Explorer windows to your heart's content. That is of
course until the next time you are working on an Office document of some sort and the previewer has a hissy fit!
This is an incredibly lame bug/limitation that exists in Windows/Office. It's of no current commercial concern to Microsoft to fix it, so we just have to work around it until the problem bubbles to the surface of the development team's bug-fix to-do list,
    if ever.
Unfortunately, the way software development is going these days it's all moving towards providing Minimum Viable Product (MVP - Yes, this is a term software developers use) for the same cost as a fully functional product. The bar on software QA is falling,
    but the price isn't.
    Cheers,

  • Check if linked image has preview?

    Hi
In InDesign, when we place an image as a link in a document, it creates a sort of a "preview" for the image. So, now even if the original image is deleted from disk, the document still has a "preview" of the linked image.
If we go ahead and export the image as pdf, it uses the "preview" while exporting (since the linked file is deleted).
This "preview" is not generated always in case of InDesign Server (depends on settings).
I need a way to find out which links have "previews" associated with them, and which do not. Can anyone give any pointers about where to look?
    I have tried using
    ILinkResource
virtual ResourceStoreState  GetStoreState () const =0
    Returns the resource's store state.
but it always returns 0(kNormal), which means
Resource is not cached or embedded (Even for links which have previews). So I'm beginning to think that the "previews" and the ResourceStoreState are two different things.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
you can check against links name or filePath '$.writeln(app.activeDocument.links.everyItem().name);' gives a array back.
    if(app.activeDocument.links.itemByName('SomeName').isValid === false){alert('Do something ...')}

  • Previews and Thumbnails, again

Has anyone had success with sorting out mismatched previews and thumbnails? I cannot seem to find the "consistency check" mentioned in earlier posts (would like clear and specific info on finding that), and rebuilding the library not only did not fix this problem, but seems to have altered my keyword hud in the process.

We do not get an option to check consistency when holding down command and option while launching Aperture, all we get is the rebuild library now or later options. Is there another way to get to the consistency check?
We have tried removing the bad apples so to speak, removing the bad thumbnails and rebuilding the thumbnails with the master CD in place. As soon as the CD is removed, then the thmbnails revert to the bad previews. The files are kept on Cds and Aperture is being run on two computers, one for me, the photographer, and one for Starbanter, who is assembling the database for me. So this is happening on two computers.

  • HT2506 how to rename files using preview

I have scanned some images to my desktop, and now I want to rename them; how do I do this?

Just as an amendmend: the above was true in better -blessed- times.
Now (Mavericks at least) also this is gone. Why not just have the option to click in the name of the file in the Thumbnail bar and change the name? Why no preview.app>menu-item "rename"? Anybody on earth would understand this, probably even my dog i don't have....
Currently i don't find any option to rename singular pictures while browsing them using preview.
Or did i miss s.th. obvious?
Just adding to another oddity i am across with about preview (Annotate in Preview - Underline Tool with Different Colors) ...
Not to mention, that preview always resets the viewport of a document opened in preview to the document-beginning, when havin opened multiple documents in preview an closing one of them, totally annoying.
I hope this gets sorted out soon, preview was almost perfect pre 10.8, no idea whats's goin wrong there...
    Sigh...

  • Pictures in Preview Drawer...Where's the drawer???

Okay, this does it. Note to self: Buy Dummies book for operating system!
I use a lot of pictures and sort them using Preview...in the "drawer" mode, meaning that they appear in a thumbnail and I can scroll up and down to see all of the pictures.
All of a sudden, the drawer is missing and each picture opens separately. I certainly don't remember changing any preferences, etc. I did have to use Adobe Acrobat a couple times when a .pdf would not open properly in Preview. I read a couple earlier posts, so I ran Disk Utility, etc.
Can someone tell me how to get the "drawer" back. And this "Dummy" is hoping you know what I am talking about!
Geez....it's the little things in life that are so frustrating!
    Thanks!

    Hi Mickey560,
This is a bit after the fact, but I wanted to mention that this may have been a matter of just resetting the toolbar in your Preview app. I'm not sure why resetting the PRAM settings would correct the Preview drawer missing problem but it sounds more like your drawer was just hidden.
The settings held in PRAM are listed at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
so I'm not sure why that would have corrected the problem (?).
When you opened Preview was the "Toolbar" for Preview visible? Was the icon for the "drawer" visible in the toolbar if the toolbar was visible? If "this" was the problem all you needed to do was go to the "View" menu (in Preview app) and select "Customize Toolbar" selection. This would allow you to drag the "Drawer" icon back to the Toolbar. Or if the Toolbar was missing you just needed to select "Show Toolbar" in the View Menu.
Sorry if that was not your original problem but just wanted to let you know if the problem ever arises again.
All's well at this point, so I guess this is moot, but just in case for your future information....
    good luck,

  • Good luck with the forum + ePub feature request

Good idea about the new forum! I'm sure it will thrive.
EPub creation in InDesign has advanced by leaps and bounds. Last week I created a fairly heavily illustrated fiction ePub out of InDesign in "one sitting", and -- amazingly -- without having to touch the resulting ePub in an external editor!  (This was a book that I had typeset for print in InDesign as well, so of course that makes it easier.) Just a little custom CSS, and some custom paragraph styles and object export settings. I think that's great, and thanks to Douglas Waterfall who is clearly doing an amazing job, plus is very attentive to listening to users' requests and ideas.
Avoiding the use of an external editor is in my opinion very desirable, and currently, InDesign's Achilles heel when it comes to that is the navigation pane. The navigation pane is constructed according to a TOC that the user has created in InDesign, but not everything can be created with an InDesign TOC.
On the most basic level, chapters in the actual ePub might be formatted as so:
    CHAPTER 1
    Trains
    CHAPTER 2
    Planes
    CHAPTER 3
    Automobiles
... but in the nav. pane, one would prefer:
    1. Trains
    2. Planes
    3. Automobiles
As far as I'm aware, the only way to achieve that currently is by opening up the ePub after export with an external editor and editing the nav pane manually.
So if InDesign could offer some way to have more flexibility with that, and avoid the need to edit externally, that would be great.
    Ariel
PS And of course, some sort of live preview when editing for ePubs in InDesign is also crucial.
PPS I still can't help wondering if a separate Adobe ePub editor wouldn't be better than foisting it all on InDesign. Obviously, this ePub editor should be able to open InDesign files.

You have a wonderful positive attitude, Pierre, but two things:
    1.  They shouldn't be a work in progress - they should be polished and complete.  As it is it gives people the impression that the company's products are unpolished and lacking in function.
    2.  We may have a say, through threads like this one, but it rarely seems to make any difference.  Again that seems to reflect Adobe's overall current philosophy for product development and release...  Consider the fact that they virtually always plan to release what they already have built - even though people may feed back many problem reports during beta testing.  It happened with the Photoshop CS6 beta, it happens with the Camera Raw betas, and we have this forum software that, despite being released in an unfinished state, isn't being actively modified per anyone's requests.
There's only one good reason for exposing unfinished software - to solicit feedback to help find what's unfinished and prioritize what needs to be done to finish it.
    It's not working, Adobe.
    Hello?  Is this thing on?

  • How do i get the old tab switching behavior back?

I installed Firefox 8 today to give it another try after a pretty bad experience of switching from FF 3.6 to FF 4.0.
Right now, i've dealt with most of the inconveniences of the switch, but there is one thing i don't get.
What happened to the tab navigation behavior? I mean, i used to be able to switch tabs from left to right with Ctrl+Tab and from right to left with Ctrl+Shift+Tab. And it was perfect for me.
Now Ctrl+Tab is opening some sort of a preview window, and Ctrl+Shift+Tab opens the All Tabs list.
How could i get the previous behavior back? I'm too used to it to change myself simply because somebody came up with a new way that he thought would suit better.
    Thanks.

Found the answer by myself, thanks to the [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/851489 other post here] . Looks like Control Tab Preview got itself enabled for some reason...

  • How do you get Slideshow in the Finder to NOT randomize the order?

This has been bugging me for a very long time. Does anyone know how to stop the Slideshow feature from randomizing the order of the photos?
As an aside, why is this the default behavior in the first place?

Oddly enough my sis-in-law called me last night wanting to know how do a slideshow on a Mac (she is normally on her Windows machine, but since my brother is currently in Bangkok she was using his Mac and couldn't ask him). I explained the Finder method, including the "random" problem, and also how to use Preview to do the show (and to sort them in Preview to change the order--control click in the drawer displaying the thumbs and then choose the sort method). One thing she would like to do that I don't know how to accomplish is to have the name of the pix display while the show is running. You can choose that if you make the slideshow in iPhoto, but evidently not in the Finder or Preview.

  • Forms Central - Internet Explorer Recommended Browser Settings

I created a form in Adobe Acrobat X Pro, added it to Forms Central and then linked it to our company website for members to complete and then click submit.  I have a member that said her submit button will not work, she clicks it and nothing happens.  My question: What is the recommended browser settings for Internet Explorer to be able to submit the form.

Most of the major browsers have some sort of PDF preview built into them. These preview capabililties don't have enough functionality to allow filling in of PDF Forms. Therefore regardless of browser or platform (Mac) you likely need to install our Acrobat Reader plugin. Additionally in some cases you will need to tell the browser that you want to use our (Adobe Reader) plugin when displaying PDF. Each browser is a little different, but the concept is the same.

  • How to embed my name within multiple image's EXIF data at once-Bridge CS3

I've been trying to figure out how to do this for some time and just can't understand how to get my images both Raw and JPEGs to show my name in the EXIF copyright or author entry when entering it in the "File Info" dialog box so it shows up viewing EXIF data using EXIF Viewer or within Bridge CS3.
Can I get some help on this? Point me to a tutorial or something?
I've already read Bridge Help and it's worded in such a way that isn't very clear to me on how to do this.
Thank you for your help on this.

Let me see if I understand this correctly. That "Digital Workflow 1" pdf told me to uncheck all IPTC boxes which is opposite what you just said.
You are free to create the workflow that suits you, check or uncheck IPTC in Bridge prefs is only a way to organize the view in the metadata panel, not adding or deleting info from it.
So I'm suppose to enter my name in the IPTC Contact-"Creator" entry section within the "File Info" dialog box of a selected image/images within Bridge CS3 and check the IPTC boxes in the Metadata section of Bridge's Preferences dialog box to turn them on so my name I entered as "Creator" in "File Info"/IPTC can be seen in the Metadata placard Bridge work space interface but does NOT guarantee my name will be EMBEDED IN THE EXIF of the selected image/images?
As above, all info you add to IPTC and apply to an image is embedded in the exif and xmp data of that file, no matter if the boxes are checked or unchecked for visibility in metadata panel.
IOW checking the IPTC boxes in Bridge's Metadata Preferences is just for previewing within Metadata Placard work space interface in Bridge? I'm using Filmstrip view as a Bridge work space BTW.
Yes. And consider an other workspace for metadata, I attach some screenshots from my workspace I crerated myself in Bridge using the prefs and drag and drop with panels. It is from Bridge CS4 and apart from the top pathbar it is basicly the same as CS3.
Filmstrip is very nice for sorting with big preview but not the best for adding metadata. You can create as many workspace as you like and you can easily switch between them (in CS3 use the number buttons bottom right.
To actually embed my name entered as "Creator" in "File Info" IPTC section in a selected image/image's EXIF data I have to apply a custom made template to the image/images already residing on the hard drive and viewed in Bridge OR append the IPTC data within the EXIF of the image/images upon import from camera CF card reader through Bridge's "Get Photos From Camera" drop down menu. Correct?
Yes, I have choosen for the last option because now all my downloaded files have this template in it and I don't have to bother later. No matter if the files are keepers or not. You only have to create a template once. See also a screenshot from the info I filled to the template but it is up to you what you like to appear in there.
Another question, what is the difference between the "Description" section where you can enter "Author" (which would be my name) and the IPTC Contact section where you can enter "Creator" (again, my name) both within "File Info" dialog box?
check this wikipedia info about IPTC:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Press_Telecommunications_Council
Another question, I just selected a batch of images within a folder in Bridge and tried to create a Metadata Template and it shows a blank box with a statement at the bottom "Only checked properties will be added/changed to this template"...and below this "Properties selected: 0". What and where are checked properties? Does that mean I have to check the IPTC boxes in Bridge's Metadata Preferences?
Don't know that. You should first create a template without selecting multiple files. After you saved this template select the files you want to change and click on the append template option.
I have to wonder how and why another photographer would need all this nested clutter to accommodate alternate workflows on something as simple as input/output processing on a batch of images. It's beyond my understanding. This just seems way too complicated to have to sort out. Just my opinion.
Nothing is ever that simple as it seems....

  • Help me ditch Outlook! Apple Mail doesn't display messages for all accounts. Thoughts?

I have two IMAP accounts, both GMail. One account always shows messages (Gmail in the screenshot below) but the other usually does not. I've deleted the account, rebuilt it etc and nothing works. When I do get messages to display, as soon as I change folders then go back the messages have disappeared again.
Both accounts are set up the same way. One the account that is not working (Ruddell Consulting in the screen shot), I see the total unread message count under the Mailboxes window but the sort column and preview windows are blank. When viewing the common inbox I only see mail from one account.
I'm trying to get rid of Outlook 2011 but with the same account settings in Outlook 2011 both accounts work as expected so I'm stuck with it until I can get this resolved.
    Any thoughts?Thanks!
    Jim

I found the problem. Or at least a workaround. I use Google Mail and some folders in my Gmail account were causing problems for Apple Mail. I removed the folders and Mail works as it should.

  • Exporting video from PPro CS4 to Encore CS4 is jerky

    Hi Guys
I need help urgently as I have to finish my client's work today:
I used a HDD camcoder to record video & I downloaded to my PC via Bridge
The video is in MPEG format
I used the media encoder to convert from MPEG to AVI: microsoft avi, pal, 720 X 576, lower field first, 48Khz audio
I imported in PPro and edited: used fast color correction, dip to black video transition, edited audio using soundbooth
I then went to each video clip I edited and reversed field dominance (set to always deinterlace, then tried flicker removal)
Then I imported the sequence into Encore using adobe dynamic link, and then created a timeline
If I test the video in Encore or on TV, guess what? The video is crap - it's jerky
I have also tried to first export the video from PPro to an AVI file and then import into Encore as AVI but it's the same bad result
Please, I don't know what to try now. I tried converting using ulead video studio from MPEG to AVI, using DV-AVI settings: frame based, 720 X 576, 48KHz audio, type 2 compressor
The other thing is I don't know what the media encoder uses as a compressor (type 1 or 2) and how come there's no option of choosing DV-AVI. There's only microsoft AVI.
    Many thanks in advance guys
    Live Fantasy

Glad that you got it sorted.
The "Preview" in Encore is just that, an emulation. You method of Burning the DVD RW is the best method to check all aspects of an authored DVD. Besides some of the quality issues you noted, there are also some other "gottchas" in En Preview. One of the most notable is the "black flash," when using Button Transitions, or transitioning from a Play First to a Menu. The emulation is just not perfect. Also, depending on which navigational aids one uses, things can work differently, than with a remote on a set-top player and can trip one up when testing a navigational scheme.
I even find that testing on hardware is preferable to doing so on a software player, unless the delivery is exclusively to a computer and not to a set-top player.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
