Sort order inconsistent behavior

There seems to be inconsistent behaviour when defining a default sort order sequence.
Everything works as expected when the display sequence and the order in which the columns are defined in the query are the same but as soon as the display sequence is changed the default sort order doesn't work for the second column in the order sequence.
I have put up an example at [apex.com|http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=36885:1]
In report EMP the display sequence and query sequence are the same and the default sort on "Job" and "Hiredate" is correct working. Even when the user sorts on "Manager".
The sort order sequence then becomes "Manager", "Job" and "Hiredate". As also descripted in the following Sorting on multiple columns
And exactly the behaviour we are looking for.
Report EMP2 is a copy of EMP with the only difference the order in which the columns are displayed
Now the default sort order doesn't work as expected. The report is first ordered on "Job" but then on "Employee" instate of "Hiredate" as is defined. Interestingly "Employee" is the second column in the query.
It seems that instate of the query_column_id the column_display_sequence is used in the order by. At least for the second column in the defined sort order sequence.
This may also explain the behaviour mentioned with [derived columns and sort sequence|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=1006429&#1006429]
The display sequence in report EMP2 is where the wizard came up with.

At the report attributes you can define the sort sequence of a column. When you do that initialy the report is sorted as you defined it. So in my example that is first by "Job"and within "Job" by "Hiredate". When the user sort explicit on an other column this column is put before the columns you have defined.
So when the user clicks on "Manager" the sort order becomes "Manager", "Job", "Hiredate". When the user then sort on "Employee" the sort order becomes "Employee", "Job" an "Hiredate".
This works when the order in which the columns appear in your query are the same as the order in which they are displayed.
BUT as soon as the display order changes the sort sequence doesn't work anymore. Even worse is that also the initial sort sequence doesn't work for the second column any more. (I haven't tested for three or more columns)
In the example I have put on apex.com in the second report the sort sequence of the report attributes is the same as in the first report. But the initial sort order that is actually done is on "Job" and "Employee" instate of "Job" and "Hiredate". Where "Hiredate" is the second column in the display sequence. But "Employee" is the second column in the query.
So to really make use of the sort sequence you have to keep your display sequence equal to the order in witch they appear in the query. This isn't really practical.

  • Sort Order Inconsistency Between iPhone OS and Mac OS

    In any application (Address Book, Bento, Excel sheets, etc.), items are sorted alpha-numerically (letters followed by characters and numbers) on the iPhone, but they are sorted numero-alphabetically (characters and numbers followed by letters) in the Mac OS. It's just strange having an item called "123" in the first row of an app on the Mac, and then having to find it in the 179th row on the iPhone. I cannot find any information as to why Apple would not have both platforms do one or the other, to maintain consistency. (I think alpha-numeric is the most used.) Anyone have any clues?

    what are you expecting to do with bluetooth between the devices?
    you can't sync or transfer files or the likes between the 2 using bluetooth

  • Sort order in Paragraph Catalog inconsistent / incorrect

    b Problem Description:
    Sort order of paragraph styles INCONSISTENT/INCORRECT when compared to standard alphabetical sort. From the Paragraph Catalog, or when I select F9, styles starting with "1a_" sort before styles starting with "1_". If a table with the style names is sorted, "1_" comes before "1a_".

    I have the same problem. I've lost track now of the number of times where I've assigned the wrong paragraph style to something since switching to FM8. The styles are no longer in the same order, so my level 1 heading is no longer the first tag that comes up when I press F9. Now I have to dig for it through other tags that start with the number 1 in our catalog.
    Our paragraph tags were developed years ago, and it wasn't until FM8 that there was a problem with the sort order. The characters no longer sort the same as Windows sorts. An underscore is supposed to come before all letters and numbers. Adobe, please fix this annoying bug!!!

  • Sort order of Imessages and SMS

    In previous IOS versions, when you deleted a Imessage or an SMS, the sort order of message automatically changed to last date. In IOS 8.1 the sort order
    doesn´t do this, which means that if you delete a message send today and the one before that was sent yesterday, the message is not moved "down" my list and counted as from yesterday it still stays as if it was sent today.
    Could you please fix this.
    Thx (Apple 6 User)

    The issue isn't really the T in The Beach Boys. The issue is the inconsistency between the sort in Finder, the playlist sort in the side bar, and the sort within Music.
    1) If you make a smart playlist The Beach Boys, it will be sorted in the side bar under T, not under B.
    2) If you make a smart playlist 409 (containing The Beach Boys' song 409), it will be sorted at the top before the letter A. In Music, it will be at the bottom, after the letter Z.
    While this behavior may be of long standing, it is still inconsistent. I think we should be given an option as to how we want to sort numbers and punctuation marks. I assume that the american english sort order is not imposed on other language versions of iTunes. It shouldn't be difficult to allow the sort to match the locale of the computer, so that iTunes sorts match Finder sorts.
    P.S. Most of my files are wave files from old records and tapes. I chose to name The Beach Boys The Beach Boys and The Beatles Beatles, i.e., I chose to put one under T and one under B. Only The Band, The Beach Boys, The Who, and The Soul Stirrers were worthy of the extra The, to be sorted under the T's where I wanted them to be (sorry Beatles).

  • Hierarchy table sort order no longer required in 11.1.1.3?

    Hi guys,
    I am working on loading Dimensions through EPMA interface tables. Hyperion version 11.1.1.3. The sort order for the records was not in line with the hierarchy. Still the dimension got loaded without any errors. I remember in the older versions we would have to have the records in the hierarchy table in the right order for the metadata to get loaded properly.
    Just wanted to confirm if this is a 11.1.13 version enhancement and not something that I am missing.
    Thanks.

    Hi Luc,
    I have checked our bug DB, but couldn't find any bug that would explain a change in behavior of processDatabaseChangeNotification() in 11.1.1.3
    On the contrary, we have been working on issues related to NPE during its execution recently (fix will be included in JDev 11.1.1.4.0).
    Could you create a Service Request in "My Oracle Support" and upload your sample ?
    We will have a look.

    Didier.

  • Photoshop CS3 web gallery bugs(?); vanishing metadata, bad sort order

    Running OS 1.5.4 on 24" Imac, I'm attempting to generate a "horizontal slideshow" from bridge-selected files in Photoshop CS3.
    [Sounded like the problem in this post: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5a9fe/2 but on re-reading I've decided it's different so I'm giving it it's own thread, with more detail...]
    Here's my experience:
    1) Description and title show up for a second on the first slide, then revert to just the blank template on that and all subsequent slides (title: [blank] description: [blank]....
    Hitting "refresh" produces the descriptive metadata for a tantalizing moment, then it' s back to the blank template for this and all subsequent slides. It does this both for Safari and Firefox.
    You can view this behavior in a slideshow at http://oasisdesign.net/projects/earthtoilet/
    If it asks for a password, use---
    user:earthling
    pass: draf1 )
    "preserve all metadata" is checked.
    I've tried all combinations of checking/ unchecking "title, description, filename" for labeling...also, making slideshows with just one or two slides to reduce the chance that it's a weird character issue of the type some other folks have experienced...
    2) additionally, the web gallery is not respecting the manual sort order in Bridge, which is the source of the files. The help files say the slideshow should follow the manual sort order in Bridge.
    3) Finally, metadata entered in bridge metadata tab sometimes vanishes, sometimes metadata entered in file info wouldn't show in the metadata tab.
    Thanks for your help!!

    BTW, here's the related issues I found:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5a9fe/2
    ...After some investigation, I found that the descriptions were disappearing only for photos that had a Return / Line Break in the description. If you go back and make sure all of your descriptions are a single line, it works fine....

    OK...here's the hack I used to get around what I'm now totally convinced are program bugs and shortcomings relative to advertised functionality, for anyone else who has to deal with this, followed by my (suggested fixes to Adobe)...
    1) Sort everything the way you want in bridge.
    2) Make meta descriptions w/o weird characters (a warning here would be helpful)
    3) Use "batch rename," with "copy to another folder" to give the images totally plain vanilla, DOS-style file names (001.jpg, 002.jpg...). This solves most filename issues and the works around web gallery's failure to recognize bridge sort order in one go. Note that you can irrevocably screw up the names of all your original files if you're not very careful to COPY at this step.
    ([a] make the bridge sort work directly, as advertised, por favor. [b] add an error message or warning about file names such as 006-(2).jpg causing malfunction. A compassionate, low-effort short-term patch for Mac users of web gallery, especially since bridge generates that particular sort name itself invisibly and automatically if you move a file with the same name into a folder)
    4) Use "white on black" instead of bug-ridden "horizontal slideshow" (horizontal slideshow should be fixed or deleted from the next version...multiple slideshow options would be awesome, as they advance automatically at the max rate the user's bandwidth allows, a very attractive feature)
    5) Restrict all images to the same height so users can click *in the same spot* to advance the 200 images with less carpal tunnel (the advance arrow should *always* be in the same spot, for every web gallery, IMHO)
    Web galleries are a fantastic tool for sharing information easily...I hope to see some evolution in those great automatic updates someday...

  • Copy multiple items from ical alters sorting order

    I use OSX leopard with iCal 3.0.1. I would like to select multiple items and copy-paste them into a text document or spreadsheet. I use iCal to keep track of people's working hours and I need to send the hours to salary admin at the end of each month.
    Using the "search" option within iCal, I can select all item concerning the working hours of, let's say, "George". If I copy-paste them into another application (Word, Mail, Numbers, Excel) the sorting order of the items altered. It looks like a rather random order. I want to have it ordered by date opbviously! Does anyone recognize this problem?

    Pieter,
    would send feedback to apple on this, recreated the behavior on both of my macs for multiple search results, and each time same thing, order is altered...

  • Sort Order of Lookup Column

    I have a list with look-up columns.
    In particular, 'Market' is a look-up column, pulling the 'Title' column from a document library.
    The issue I have is that the 'Market' look-up column contents are not listed in alphabetical order when selecting the menu to sort/filter, however, they are in alphabetical order
    in the library they are being pulled from....
    What controls the sort behavior of look-up column contents?
    UPDATE: I have discovered that, by grouping the View by any column, the error disappears. Although this might be a work-around and provide context to an eventual solution, this is not a solution.
    UPDATE 2: The key seems to be multi-value columns OR System Column (TYPE), require grouping to display sort order correctly.
    Filtering by the type column (Type = xls ~ 7 items) does
    NOT resolve the issue
    Filtering by the type column (Type = xls ~ 7 items)

    - Rick

    Here is a way that worked for me.  I had a lookup column from a list to a document library.  When I opened the form up it sorted by title.  I created a new Data Connection in Infopath editing the list.  When I created the Data connection
    it gave me options which fields in the data connection and the ability to sort based on a field.  I then just pointed my drop down list to point to the new data connection.  This worked on ipad as well as IE9.  No code required and my google
    searching did not find this simple solution so putting here.

  • Custom Sort Order in Dropdown list of translate values

    Peoplesoft sorts the dropdown translate values in ascending order by default. I wanted to change the sort order. For example:
    The translate values in alphabetic order are:
    Andrea
    Baluch
    Others
    Shumi
    I want this "Others" as the last value. So the drop down should display like this:
    Andrea
    Baluch
    Shumi
    Others

    From a document I had created ...
    This odd behavior of PeopleTools however can be overridden by implementing a few lines of JavaScript and PeopleCode.
    The approach is quite simple and summarized briefly as below:
    1.     Concatenate the value-description pairs of the dropdown list into a single string separated by a pipe “|” as delimiter (in case other delimiter is used the script shown below in Step 4 has
    to be accordingly modified) in the sequence in which it should be displayed on the page.
    2.     While concatenating, make sure to place the value first and then the description, these being separated by the delimiter. Example: “01|”|”January”|”02|”February” …and so on.
    3.     Pass this string as a parameter to an HTML definition through a GetHtmlText function. This HTML definition in turn will a have a JavaScript logic to resolve this delimited string into
    meaningful value-description pairs and use them to override the intended dropdown list.
    Below are the steps in detail:
    Step 1:
    Find out the html element-id for the dropdown field from the html source-code of the PeopleSoft page from the browser. In HTML, the tag for a dropdown field is <select> </select>
    The element-id is set by the id attribute of the <select> tag. This id would be used in Step 5.
    Step 2:
    Add a field of type Long Character to any work record that you may be using on your page for buttons, hyperlinks, etc.
    Step 3:
    Add an HTML-Area to the page (preferably alongside the dropdown field which needs need to be sorted). In the properties of the HTML-Area, assign the Record-field used in Step 2 above.
    Step 4:
    Create a HTML definition from the app-designer and add the below JavaScript code to it and save the definition.
    <script>
    var j=0;
    var str=new String('%bind(:2)');
    ar1=str.split("|");
    var fld = document.getElementById("%bind(:1)");
    fld.options.length = 0;
    fld.options[fld.options.length] = new Option('', '');
    while (j<ar1.length)
              fld.options[fld.options.length] = new Option(ar1[j+1], ar1[j]);
                    j=j+2;
    </script>
    Step 5:
    Write peoplecode on an appropriate event to generate the concatenated string of value-descriptions delimited by a pipe “|”. A pseudocode for the same is shown below. Here the HTML id for the dropdown field and the value-description string are passed as parameters to the JavaScript shown in Step 4; and JavaScript thus created after substitution of the Bind values is assigned to the value of Record.Field used in Step 2 & 3. The location of the below peoplecode may vary depending on the when the dropdown list needs to be sorted.
    Local string &strDropdownValues;
    &strDropdownValues = "1|" | "January|" | "2|" | "February|" | "3|" | "March|" | "4|" | "April|" | "5|" | "May|" | "6|" | "June";
    <Record.Field>.Value = GetHTMLText(<HTML.DPS_DROPDOWN_HTML>, "<DROPDOWN_ID>", &strDropdownValues);

  • Change sort order of Podcasts on iPod?

    In iTunes, my podcasts are sorted in ascending order according by the Release Date field. I've also made sure that the different parts of a certain podcast episode has proper Track Numbers.
    However, on my 5.5G iPod, the podcasts are sorted in a descending order (newest first) which plays everything backwards (i.e. a podcast with 4 parts play's part 4 first).
    How can I change the sort order of my podcasts on my iPod?
    I've noticed that even if all my podcasts have been given Track Numbers (usually 1-4 per episode), when they play on my iPod, it says "1 of 1" instead of "1 of 4" etc. Why is that?
    Also, the most annoying thing is that after a podcast has played, I'm thrown out back to the main Podcast Menu. I then have to go back into Podcasts, choose the Podcast folder and then choose the next podcast to listen to. Very weird behavior.
    My iPod is set to automatically sync with iTunes, so I can't change anything in iPod playlists in iTunes

    i discovered this completely by accident.
    connect your iPod to your computer.
    click the podcast bit of your iPod on the left hand side. (so it brings up which podcasts you have on your iPod)
    you can then click 'release date' to change the order from either newest or oldest first.
    unfortunately you can only do this for your entire podcast collection. i subscribe to some audiobook podcasts, and for some reason the episodes seem to have been released with the earlier episodes on later dates, meaning listening to the sequentially would mean listening to them backwards, but otherwise this works perfectly.
    hope that helps.

  • How do I retain the default 3 column sort order in a standard report

    I have a standard (not interactive) report of about 12 columns in which I set column 1 as the primary sort, column 2 as the second sort within that and column 3 as another sort within 1&2. I have also made other columns sortable by the user. However, once a sort is done by the user on one of the other columns, the default sort order never seems to come back, even if the application is closed. Is there something I need to set?

    Standard report sort columns are stored persistently as user preferences. The <tt>apex_util.remove_sort_preferences</tt> method can be used to remove them, resetting reports to the default sort order. However this is not a precision instrument: it removes the user's sort preferences for all reports...
    It is possible to remove the sort preference for individual reports using the <tt>apex_util.remove_preference</tt> method by reverse engineering the required sort preference name from the admin user preference report, but I wouldn't recommend it. I recently worked on an application where this had been done for one report, but we removed this "feature" as: (1) no one could remember why it had been done in the first place; (2) it was completely inconsistent with the behaviour of the other app reports; (3) the implementation was Byzantine (get non-obvious pref value and have page re-request itself with additional parameters) and lead to (4) poor page performance.
    Unless users are jumping up and down demanding this I'd stick to the status quo...

  • Sort Order: Case insensitive... move NULL to end of list

    Hello All,
    I am trying to sort a set a values, and NULL is a possible value. In the report I am displaying the NULL as EMPTY (I cannot leave that as NULL). I was wondering if there is a way to display this 'EMPTY' value as the last element in the list.
    I tried to append various ASCII characters in front of it, but nothing seems to work. Even is if enclose it in parenthesis, is does alphabetical sort.
    Is there a work around ?
    Thanks for your time !

    Nemi, Deborah,
    According to SAP Note 1200528 - Web Intelligence does not utilize special characters when sorting, this 'issue' is by design and not by design.
    The following is a copy-paste from the note:
    Symptom
    When attempting to sort a Web Intelligence document on a particular column, special characters such as "-" or "." are not respected.  For example, add the following into a database and then create a Web Intelligence report.
    a-Austria
    a-Austrailia
    a-Belgium
    a B-Argentina
    a B-Brazil
    a B-Egypt
    When you sort this data in Web Intelligence it appears as:
    a-Austria
    a-Austrailia
    a B-Argentina
    a B-Brazil
    a B-Egypt
    a-Belgium
    Cause
    This behavior is by design. For Enterprise XI Release 2, the Lexicographical order of the International components of Unicode has been implemented. This order sorts with respect to the language set for a data source.  This means that if we modify the sort order for English, other languages that we support will also have changes in their sort order.  In this case we must do our best to respect all the languages that we support.
    For more information please go to http://icu.sourceforge.net/
    Resolution
    To work around this behavior, complete one of the following:
    Workaround 1:
    Create a formula on the field such as
    "=Replace([Col001];"-";" ")"
    This will replace the - with a space although for this example the sort will be in the same "wrong" order, it will look much nicer.
    - or-
    Workaround 2:
    Create a custom sort:
    1. Select the section cell or table cells you want to sort.
    2. Click the down arrow next to the Apply/Remove Sort button on the Report toolbar then select Custom... from the drop-down list.
    Best,
    Srinivas

  • Sort order on reports

    I've encountered a number of report views where the sorting is obviously flawed. For example if I run the Modification Date Age Report, choose the Age Criteria of Month and Year, and try and sort on the Date - it sorts that field in a string sort, not numeric sort, so I get 1/2001, 1/2002, 1/2003, etc. instead of 1/2001, 2/2001, 3/2001.
    Any way to cure or change the sort order behavior?

  • Project Server 2010 TimeSheet line classification sorting order- Issue

    Hi,
    We have PS 2010 SP-2 environment , and having few time sheet custom line classifications in order to sort them I have prefixed my custom time-sheet line with numbers like 100, 110, 115 and it is perfectly sorted in Line Classification settings under server
    settings, please see below.
    But strangely when a user creates time sheet and click insert new row then "Add an existing task" modal dialogue box shows "Standard" OOTB line classifcation on top and all custom line classifications underneath it.
    Please check below
    Don't know why it is not considering sorting order defined under "Line Classifications" settings. Same configuartion used to  work fine in PS-2007. But dont know why its not working in 2010.
    May be some silly configuration I am missing or something serious here, seriously not able to make out why this is happening.
    Please let me know, Thanks much !!!

    Hey Thanks Guillaume,
    That's what I want to confirm in context of 2010. Because same configuration used to work in our 2007 environment. So want to confirm its default behavior or I have missed something in configuration.
    Any other idea do you have, like putting some java-script code in modal dialogue box to get this sorting done or any other customization.
    As of now considering "javascript" but need some pointers to get start working on this.
    Thanks much !!!

  • Random sort order in slideshows

    I was trying to import some jpg's into a slideshow, from a folder of jpg's. I found that the slides that ended up in the iDVD slideshow were randomly sorted. The sort order matched neither the date/timestamp, the filename, or any other metadata I could work out. I then imported them into iPhoto and discovered I could force a sort order there and bring them across from iPhoto into iDVD and that worked.
    However, the behavior of iDVD when importing from a regular folder of images is very buggy, and of course there are no slideshow sorting options within the program. I do this regularly and pumping everything through iPhoto just so I can get my slideshows sorted is cumbersome. Has anyone else seen this and is there an explanation/fix?
    Thanks.

    Did you have any luck with this? I have been trying all day to find a solution for this very problem. I know I can do the *into iPhoto first* theory - but as I am adding from Aperture I had thought I was past the iPhoto malarky.
