Sort photo by title

Hello
How can I sort my photo by title.

You can only do this manually, & only in certain album views if View > Keep Sorted by Date is unchecked.
If you want more sort options, tell Apple using https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html

In iPhoto if I select View, then Sort Photos by title, how do I stop it reverting to sorting by date when I close iPhoto and re-open it later?

In what mode, Events, Photos or in an Album, are you when you select View ➙ Sort ➙ By Title?
As a first fix attempt try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • "View- Sort Photos- By Title" produces WRONG sorting order!

    Hello,
I have a set of pictures named Scan 1.jpg, Scan 2.jpg, Scan 3.jpg, etc... up to Scan 102.jpg
They all belong to the same "Event" in iPhoto.
When I am inside that Event, I need them to be sorted by their name (Scan 1, Scan 2, Scan 3, etc).
So I choose the option: View->Sort Photos->By Title
However, that shows pictures in the wrong order, as follows: Scan 1, Scan 10, Scan 100, Scan 101, Scan 102, Scan 11, Scan 12, Scan 13, etc, Scan 19, Scan 2, Scan 20, Scan 21, Scan 21, etc... The logic is clear but it is wrong!
Finder recognizes the correct order of files, named in such way, so why doesn't iPhoto?!
Please suggest if you have any solutions OTHER than renaming the original files to Scan 001, Scan 002, etc. I assume that would work, but I really would hate to spend time on renaming. There must be an easier way. I am surprised that iPhoto makes this mistake in the first place - I remember coming across this issue during Windows Explorer times. When I switched to Mac it was a pleasant surprise that Finder understands in such situations that the order should be 1, 2 3, 4, 5 etc and not 1, 10, 100, 11, 110, 111, 12, etc. What a disappointment to bump into that bug in iPhoto! I hope there is a solution. Please advise!
    Thanks everyone in advance.

That's been an issue with several apps for a while. You can batch rename the titles in iPhoto using the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to Text menu option with the check box checked to add a sequential number to each photo.
You can always revert back to the original file name using the same menu option.

  • Can you sort photos by Title rather then by Date Taken

I want to sort my photos by Title rather then by Date shot. Is that possible in the New Photos App?

In the new Photos (part of OS 10.10.3) , is there a way to rearrange photos in alphabetical order, since they have arrived without the titles which were present in the iPhoto ?
Shall we be required to re-name all the photos for this new version?

  • Sorting photos on IPhoto

I wish to combine my own photos and my sons photos of the same holiday on Iphoto (latest version). I have renamed my sons photos numerically to fit into my required sequence. When I place them into a Folder on the HD or onto a CD they are in the order I want them - all together in a logical sequence. When I load all these photos to IPhoto my photos separate out from my son's yet retain my numerical numbering. How can I merge them in Iphoto in the required sequence and as they appear in my folders on the HD?

I am just trying to build an Event which shows the best of his and mine as one Event.
That is no problem - but by default they will be intermixed by time since that is how events display
You can assign them different keywords ( make a smart album based on camera and select all photos in it and assign an appropriate keyword) and sort by key words (view menu ==> sort photo ==> by key words) or titles if that does it for you (view menu ==> sort photo ==> by titles)

  • Why can't I sort my photos by Title when creating a Calendar?

I am doing my first calendar in iPhoto 9.1.2, and thus experiencing my first 'issue' with the new interface. I am creating this calendar from an Event of a family member's 400+ photos from their recent trip to Australia, and unfortunately for me, the battery that keeps track of date and time on her camera was not functioning, so they are all labeled with the same date of Jan 1, 1980. Thankfully I can sort them by Title when viewing in iPhoto. However, when I select this Australia Event to create my calendar, all of the photos revert to being sorted by date. I have tried re-sorting them while in my calendar project, but there are no changes in the order of the images.
Please tell me there is a work-around for this problem. Seems like in the past, the order of the photos when creating a project reflected the way they are sorted in your library.
Thanks in advance if anyone's got any tips...

I did manage to figure out a way around this --- while in the Event, I sorted all photos by title, and then I Batch-Changed the dates to a new date, leaving a minute between each photo, thus putting them in the right chronological order when I created a project using these photos.

  • How can I sort photos by file name in Photos?

New Photos seems to be very limiting, even compared to iPhoto.  How can I sort photos by filename?  Many photos that worked in iPhoto, can't be viewed in Photos.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Titles don't use the filename any longer, but if you must have them you might be interested in Léonie's script here.

  • How to export photos with titles in chronological order. Checking box for title and keyword doesn't seem to work

I want to export a group of JPEG photos including titles in the order in which they were taken.  Checking the box to include titles and key words seems not to work.

    You can not
exporting creates files - files have no order - the order is set by the program you use to view them - for example in the finder you can view files by the date created, date modified, size, alpha, etc
So to control the order when viewing in the finder you must have an attribute that the finder can sort on set - the most common way to export photos in a specific order is to make an album in iphoto in the order you want and then export the album using the sequential naming option of the export command - then view them in the finder using a alpha sort - Exporting From iPhoto
However since you want to retain your existing title that will not work for you

  • I prefer to arrange my photos by title but when I shut down Iphoto, my photos rearrange by date.  This is not acceptable for my growing library of snanned black and white ancestral photos. How do I get photos in events to stay in place ?

I prefer to arrange my photos by title but when I shut down Iphoto, my photos rearrange by date.  This is not acceptable for my growing library of snanned black and white ancestral photos. How do I get photos in events to stay in place ?

I actually am illiterate on the use of the finder to to view photos in folders.  I guess I will go to a class at the local Apple store for a lesson on the uses of finder .
My method of viewing my photos are through events in I photo.
    1. Download  from camera or scan  in from old photos.
2  I organize photos into events by occasion, or happenings in a certain year, or a group of photos with memorabilia of a certain person from childhood and on. etc.
    3.  Because Iphoto does not allow rearranging as I was able to do in my old PC with Corell,  I drag all of the photos to an " album" on the left side of sceen.
    4.  I arrange photos in "order" after which I number each photo in sequence. I do this for a few of reasons.
              - if a photo is accidentally deleted I know it.  I can usually remedy this by checking my trash or
    rescanning.
              - I can sort by title without complications and this holds in "album"
    5.  The pictures will re arrange automatially to match the album in I photo.
    6.  This worked great in I-photo 09 but now in mountain lion the pictures in events go back to "
sort by date" and will not hold "sort to Title"each time I photo is closed down.  What a nuicance it is to have to go  to view and click "title"  again and again every time Iphoto is opened.
    7. Can I go back to Photo 09? .

  • Is there a way to sort photos by filename?

Is there a way to sort photos by filename in iPhoto? For some reason iPhoto is sorting my photos based on some date that is not the EXIF date. The built-in photo app used to do this but it now sorts the photos on filename. This works just fine for me as my filenames are something like "20120419-001a - Some Title.jpg".
    Thanks,

NO way to sort by name as far as I know.

  • Sorting Photos by Name

I'm a new Mac user. I've migrated all my photos from PC to iPhoto, but now I'm having a terrible time getting the photos to sort properly by title. I have used a naming convention (topic #) where # starts at 1 and goes up sequentially. However, when I sort by title, the photos appear in this order: topic 1, topic 10, topic 11, etc. I resolved this in XP by beginning the numbering at 100. However, I can't figure out how to do this in iPhoto (or Mac in general). Even when I batch rename in iPhoto and append a number, I cannot properly resort by title because photos 10, 11, 12 etc always get placed before photo 2, 3 etc.
Please help, I have thousand of photos and don't want to resort to renaming and reimporting from XP.
And just one more question. Although I am generally very very happy with the switch to Mac, why is it so difficult to batch rename files in Mac OS vs. XP?
    thanks

    beatlife:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Unfortunately the default alphanumeric sorting order is as you've discovered. In order to get files to sort in the 1-99 order correctly you must pad the first nine numbers with zeros, i.e. 01, 02, 03, etc.
Once in iPhoto the file names cannot be changed (titles for use in iPhoto can) unless you export the files with one of two options which will sequentially rename them (using the Album name will add padded numbers, using the Photos->Batch change and then export with the Use Title option will not pad zeros)
You can either manually pad zeros in those sets that you've renamed that way or, copy your photos from your PC again to your desktop and use R-Name to batch rename them with padded zeros. If a series of file names are XXXXX-1.jpg, etc., you can use R-Name to rename them sequentially to XXXXX-01.jpg or -001.jpg as necessary. It's a pretty slick application. Then import into iPhoto.
If you have to resort to creating a new library from scratch you might consider using iPhoto's alias mode where it does not copy full file into the library but only uses a link and an alias file. You source files are then stored where ever you want (but can't be moved once you create the library). Then you can rename the files with the proper numbering system (if you have more than 99 files in a sequence you need to pad with two zeros, 001, 002, etc.)
The alias mode may not be for you but if you think you might be interested check out these Tutorials.
Bottom line is if the numbering is important it might be worth your while to start over and rename the files with the padded zeros before importing into iPhoto. A little effort up front may save you time later on. You'll have to decide if it's worth it. Good luck.

  • Sorting photos in an album

I am trying to sort photos in an album in a random fashion, like an iPod would shuffle songs. Except here's the small difference, every twenty photos or so I need to insert a specific photo. Playing the slideshow allows for a shuffle, but I want to shuffle them in the album, then insert the specific photos. Sorting manually is an option, but I'm using over 700 photos which gets rather tedious. Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There is no way to sort Photos in an Album randonly. The only options are
Date, Keyword, Title, Rating or Manually
That’s that you’ve got to work with, I’m afraid.

  • IPhoto:  How can I sort photos within an event?  I can't figure out how to activate the Manual Sort.

iPhoto:  How can I sort photos within an event.  I can't figure out how to activate the Manual Sort button.

Only albums can be sorted manually. Events can only be sorted automatically according to one of the predefined settings "Date, Keywords, Title, Rating".
If you need a manual sort order, selectaall photos in the event and create an album: File > New Album

  • Sorting photos within an event

I'm trying to find a way to rearrange my photos within an event. According to the instructions in help:
Sort photos within Events (but not the Events themselves): Select Photos in the Source list, choose View > Event Titles, and then choose View > Sort Photos.
Trouble is, when I try to choose Event titles, it is grayed out. If I go to the event and then select view>sort photos, manually is grayed out and by date and desending are checked.
    Anyone have a suggestion.

    Did you read the answer?
Events are a very limited form of organising. They are sorted on date and time only. If you want more flexibility then you need to use Albums, where there a virtually no limitations.
That is the answer! You can not sort photos within events.
