Sort Spotlight results by creation date?

Hi All--
At work, I've recently switched from an old old version of MS Outlook to Entourage 2004, which seems much better. I'd like to archive my old mail, and use Spotlight to search it.
This works very well, except that with e-mail, the "date received" is the key date -- not the "last viewed" date that Spotlight likes to sort on. When I click on a found e-mail, sure enough the "date received" is displayed, but I can't sort on it. It's pretty frustruating when you're looking for a particular mail, and Spotlight keeps resorting them every time you open a message to see if it's the right one.
Is there a way to get the Spotlight window to sort by creation date? I'm open to Terminal hacks, etc -- any ideas?

I think I understand the question. I find the results from the Find command (command-F) are more useful when viewed in list mode. I didn't realize at first that you could do this. Try this:
1) Do command-F - search for whatever you want, doesn't matter
2) Change the View in the command area to List. (It's got three options: icons, list, or groups. Spotlight seems to default to displaying by groups.)
3) Pull down the Finder "View" Menu and select Show View Options.
4) Date Created is probably unchecked. Check it.
5) Now you should have a Date Created column in your search area. You can click on the Date Created header to sort by Date Created.
6) ... but it will come up in Groups mode next time you search. One solution is to Save your search into a smart folder (SOMETHING.savedSearch). Customize your search display how you like it. Once it's saved you can put the smart folder in your Sidebar or your Dock so it's always available.
Hope that helps - works for me.

  • Sort spotlight results?

There used to be a "date modfied" column I could use to sort search results.
Now I can only sort by "name," "kind," and "last opened."
Since I often open the wrong version, I can't use "last opened" as a parameter.
Is there maybe a 3rd party plugin for the finder that would enable me to sort spotlight results?
Or, even easier, is there a method I'm missing?
    Thanks.

Pathfinder kind of takes over your whole computer. But Forklift, which costs less, gives you dual panes and is just an amazing finder tool which uses spotlight for searches but gives you date modified. 29$.
Eventually Mac will update spotlight so that it's more useful.
It seems to me that "they" seem to want to infantilize us to death.
Apple, some of us would like a few more options. We won't get too confused. Honest.

  • SORT BY CREATION DATE   failure

    HI,
I've got 11K photos in a folder. When I open the folder I see all the photos. All the photos have the correct creation date imbedded in the RAW file as indicated by the GET INFO pop up.   In spite of this the View>Sort by> Creation Date  request is not resulting in the photos getting sorted correctly with oldest first and most recently taken last. Any idea what is going on here?  It has worked before correctly.  Thanks.

There is a sort by "capture time", which I use also. There are also some problems with it, but it works well enough for my needs.
One of the other users of this forum, Bogdan, explained in an earlier thread that one reason that LR doesn't recognize some dates is that those dates were created by software that doesn't form them according to proper standards.
Do a forum search on "Exifer" for more commentary and suggested remedies.
    Best of Luck!

  • Incrementing creation date times to preserve sort

I've got bunches of scanned analog photos. The creation dates were the scan time, not when the photos were taken. And some are out of order.
I don't remember the exact times and dates, but I do recollect the sequence. And I can use a "user order" within LR.
But how do I preserve that order in the metadata in the files for use in other applications, etc? I can set a creation date, but it appears to be the same for all. How I could increment the date/time so that I'd end up with the same sequence when sorted by "capture time"?
    Rob

John, your memory is better than mine. And some of the shots have an obvious sequence, but I don't even know the year (old old photos). Unfortunately with many the service that scanned them also tossed them like salad, and the frames on prints, which sometimes had month/date info, were cut off on the scans.
So arbitrarily adding dates could result in duplicates, but most importantly it may delude those I distribute the files to into thinking they are somehow valid dates. So I'll stick with the scan date and file renaming. Don't want somebody to see a picture of granny and wonder why she was looking so young when the picture was snapped.
I've been looking around, thinking there might be a convention for sets of photos and sequences, with perhaps a "x of y" type parameter which would indicate it was part of a set, since photos were commonly taken that way (I have old photos with names like "Roll 1 -3" for example), and since it might be a holdover from then, even when sequential filenames came into use. Even today with camera phones and such I still get lots of filename dups. Or perhaps it was useful when one is shooting sequences or bursts in sports. But I haven't found anything explicit yet. The IPTC extension "object title" might be suitable, since it's used for accession numbers. But not many applications would sort on that.
And aside from sequence, historical dates can be entered into the IPTC extension "date [object] created." But if the sequence matters, and you only know the year, it's still a problem.
So overall I think the file renaming is the way to go, with some keywords or descriptors in IPTC to indicate the name of the set. Like filename "1 of 42 Aunt Matilda's wedding."  So even if the photos get moved around, separated, etc the new owner will be able to discern they're part of a set, and with access to metadata get even more info if the filenames somehow got borked.

  • I want my pictures and videos to be sorted by the time and date they were taken.   I have Lilghtroom sorting by the creation date, but the videos are sorting separately from the pictures even when the creation dates indicate they are out of order.

I have set the sort order to be by the creation date of the pictures and media I have in the catalog.  But the pictures appear first, in chronological order, then some of the videos follow, in their chronological order, but the videos and pictures don't mix amongst each other in straight chronological order.  How can I fix this?

I think it’s only possible to see raw and jpeg stills side by side e.g. in true chronological order after setting LR prefs. Your video files will automatically show up in the Video smart collection. So you can view them in one place regardless of which folders they are stored in. Otherwise move your images and videos into a new collection and drag them into the order you want, where they will remain fixed. Or use the library filter to define a date range.

    Hi,
Enter the format that you have defined in the configuration of the property in the Additional Metadata parameter. Use the syntax customFormat=<pattern>.
In this link, you have at the end screenshots where to navigate in KM to see the property metadatas of your property:

  • How can I sort clips by creation date in the project window?

Trying to find a way to sort clips by creation date in project window, but can't seem to find an option for it. Is it possible?

im using windows pc.. and a program called 'renamer' which is kinda tricky but free and easy once you figure out how to use it... if you know dos filename conventions and wildcards its easier to figure out.. add rules etc... no clue if this program is avail if you have mac...
but put all files into a temp folder... use the renamer program.. it will write new names to the same folder.. then move all your files where you want to keep them and delete the temp one...
if you want more info I'll chk back here..
the main thing is that you can add prefix to filenames to keep track of what you shot when and ingested ... scenes etc .. or you can replace the sort order by just putting in a number or letter in filename that makes it sort the way you want...
    good luck

  • Show Creation Date

When I do a search the results are displayed by name or date order (that seems to be the only available options), but the date used is the modification date - at least, that's what shows in the window I have. How do I get it to show and sort by the creation date?
What happens now is that I search, go to View options, set view by date, but then if I open a file to look at it, then close it without making any changes, it now lists it as modified today. I've got to be missing something simple in changing this but I can't work it out.
Thanks for your help in getting the creation date shown and used as the sort field.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

When performing the search (⌘ F) switch to List View (⌘ 2). Open the View Options (⌘ J) and check the box for Date Created. (While you're there, make sure All Windows is selected) You can then sort by that date, just as you would normally, by clicking on the column heading.

  • How can I change the file creation date?

I recently downloaded more than 1,000 photos from my vacation. I'm preparing to burn DVDs for a friend, and I noticed that when I copy the photos to the desktop, they don't all have the same date. I have read a couple of discussions here about the difference between photo creation date and file creation date, and I understand the difference. But something seems odd to me.
For purposes of illustration, let's take two photos: "A" was taken with the camera in the landscape position (how one normally holds a point-and-shoot); "B" was taken with the camera held in the portrait position (rotated 90 degrees). The photos were taken on April 24, about three minutes apart, but not imported into iPhoto until May 19.
In iPhoto, both files show the actual creation date. Yay!
The problem is with the files after having been copied to the desktop.
When copied to the desktop, the info panel for photo "A" shows April 24 for both the "created" and "modified" dates. Photo "B," however, shows May 19 for the "created" and "modified" dates.
Apparently, when the "B-style" photos were imported into iPhoto, the app automatically rotated them so that they are viewed correctly (without having to turn your head sideways). This is a very nice feature, but the result is that the file date changes.
Is there any way to change this? I want the DVD to show the date the photo was created, not imported to iPhoto. Picky, I know … but I'm like that.

Apparently, when the "B-style" photos were imported into iPhoto, the app automatically rotated them so that they are viewed correctly (without having to turn your head sideways). This is a very nice feature, but the result is that the file date changes.
Correct.  Your camera has an Auto-Rotate feature. However, the camera does not actually rotate any pixels in the file, but instead flags it with an instruction: "Display me this way". This is a tag in the Exif metadata. When you import a file with this tag iPhoto creates a modified version. It does this because most of the apps that integrate with it -  email clients, word processors etc - simply don't understand this Exif tag. So if you used the shot in a word processing doc, uploaded it to many Web site etc, the shot would come out sideways.
iPhoto has nothing to say about File dates. There are various file utilities that will edit the dates on Files

  • Updating of QM info structures on the basis of inspection lot creation date

    Dear Gurus,
Our business requirement is as follow:
Suppose MM has received 10 consignment of a material (Goods receipt) against a material in month of Feb-2008 from a particular vendor.
Inspection lot statistics in MCXA is updated on the basis of inspection lot generation, which is as per our requirement.
Suppose this inspection take 2 days for analysis at laboratory.
Now FI has to make payments for the month of Feb-2008 against this inspection results. They need the value of average quality parameter for the month of Feb-2008. (Average value of all quality parameter for the material of all the inspection lot which are generated in Feb-2008)
I want that QMIS should update on the basis of Inspection Lot creation date not on the basis of result recording system date.
I think there should be some configuration settings available for this purpose.

  • Issue for creation date of Billing document in third party ???

    Hello SAP Folks,
This issue is related to third party scenario. The basic requirement is to create to a billing document with a creation date same as
Good issue date of Sales Order.
For your information, with the help of enhacement we have passed on the value of posting date of material document generated
from MIGO to Goods issue date in Sales Order. I am very much aware that setting up a new copying routine would help me but
relating the GI date field of Sales Order from the techincal point of view is a complete work stopper. Could anyone throw light on
the workaround for mapping this case ???
    Regards,
    Sarthak

    Hello,
Thanks Alex for your input on the topic !!
But i would like to say that the billing relevance of the item category has to "B" as this process of Third part Sales talks about creation of billing document after the MIGO. And i am basically interested to Populated the posting date of MIGO for Biling creation date.
In Sales Order, the GI date is modified to Posting date of MIGO through enhancement. I have been looking around relevant tables to fetch the GI date of Sales Order but not getting the right track...
Could anyone provide any other workaround to implement this sort of requirement ???
Eager to hear from Lakshmipathi ...

  • Can I script the changing of creation date, using the file name?

Normally people are doing this in reverse, but let me paint the picture.
I pulled 204 video files from an old HDD based JVC camera.  JVC records in .MOD format which iPhoto won't import.  I imported them into iMovie just fine, and iMovie even set the file name to clip-2007-11-04 04;42;29.mov which is great, but it now has a new creation date of whatever date I imported it.  Which then causes problem when I want the videos stored in iPhoto and sorted appropriately by creation date.
I've used the application "A Better Finder Attributes 5" to individually edit the creation and modify, but I'm sure I don't want to do this 203 more times, as you can't just type in the date and time, you have to type in each part of the date/time, or select it on a calendar.
I've used the application "Name Changer" to batch convert the file names to the format YYYYMMDDhhmm which would be helpful if I were going to use the terminal command touch -t, but again I don't want to have to type it in 203 more times, plus drag and drop the file into finder to populate the location.
Now, if I were more handy with automator, or maybe some (any) scripting language this would be easy peasy.  I'd batch rename all the files to the YYYYMMDDhhmm.mov and then have a script that just took the file name, passed that to touch -t along with the file location, and a few seconds later, they would all be done!
Anybody have any suggestions to how I can do this, and tips to what commands to use or ANY advice?  I'm more than happy to RTFM, but I have no idea which manual to read!
    Thanks

If your file names are precisely as you have written, this script will do what you want.
Copy the script into an AppleScript Editor document, select one or more files in a Finder window, return to the AS Editor and press Run.  Note: you will need to provide your password when the script runs.
Make sure you have a backup of any files you are working on (try using duplicates first, perhaps). The script has no error handling.

  • Is it so difficult for Sun to sort search result and duke stars ?

In the years that I have been visiting these forums I have frequently (well every year at least) asked Sun to sort the search results by reverse date. In the last few months I have asked Sun to sort the new format of the results of "My Duke Stars". Is is so difficult to add a 'order by' clause to the SQL or am I missing something?

    DrClap wrote:
It would be nice if they could do that, and I asked them too several months ago. It would also be nice if they told you how many points you got for an answer (not how many points were originally attached to the thread) and the date and time you got them (not the original date and time of the thread). But those changes might take more than just an ORDER BY clause. (Or they might be implemented by just choosing the right columns from joined tables, who knows?)They seem to have all the functionality already there, it's just spread out across two pages when it should be all on one.

No, I agree that it is functionality that should be added to the product, but it
