Sos-desktop files deleted/system affected after restart

hello
A very strange "system failure" happend today.
I explain the way things happened:
1.firefox not responding
2.firefox restart
3.looked like firefox upgraded itself(not sure)
4.lost all bookmarks from the browser
5.decided to restart the powerbook
6.all system prefernces settings lost
7.MOST IMPORTANT-the system affected and all desktop files were deleted (or gone somewhere I still don't know).
note> I have tried the "bookmark recovery" for firefox. didn't work.
the thing that puzzles me more is the system's weird failure caused afterwards. why to delete the desktop files?
Last thought was to run a file recovery soft. but I don't have any installed, any suggestions?
Please, any insights are appreciated
thanx in advance
lambros

HI,
*"the thing that puzzles me more is the system's weird failure caused afterwards. why to delete the desktop files?"*
You need to boot from your install disk and check the hard disk using Disk Utility.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
If you cannot boot from your install disk, try booting in Safe Mode
Did you repair the disk with DiskWarrior as mentioned here?

*"Volume check failed.*
*Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)"*
Did you repair disk then?

  • All Desktops go to primary monitor after restart

    I'm seeing interesting behavior where all of my desktops end up on the primary monitor after restart. Kind of annoying.
    10.10
    iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010)

    Turning Automatic Login OFF seems to have solved it for me.
    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Users & Groups, then click Login Options.
    2. If the options are dimmed, click the lock icon to unlock it, then type an administrator name and password.
    3. Choose Off from the “Automatic login” pop-up menu.

  • Apple TV Randomly Deletes Entire Content After Restart

    So I just plugged in my Apple TV to power and noticed that the first 30 seconds after the main menu is presented, browsing through the menu was very sluggish. I then proceeded to watch streamed content, and after the movie was done, I noticed that the Apple TV was resyncing everything I had synced to the Apple TV.
    This isn't the first time this has happened to me. All I know is that the Apple TV remains linked to my iTunes library but, randomly, deletes content once in a blue moon after unplugging it from power and plugging it back in. Don't know if this is a bug in the system or if I am doing something wrong but, all in all, I'd like to know if any of you know what the heck I'm talking about.

    That does not matter. If it does then Apple logic is incorrect (and I am saying this as software engineer and designer with quite alot of expereince in numer of large companies). The software is supposed to be transferred into "buffer" fully before it shows up in system structure. If it overrides the existing data then it HAS TO PROVIDE PROMPT with question to a user as this poses a risk of losing data.
    So synching in background should NEVER override file risking corruption on power failure. Do you know how data backup systems work (e.g. storage)? This is not a new discipline and Apple should follow the general rules in implementation of such systems regardless if this is media synching for fun or not. People get involved their money in solutions and toying with solving problems on unreliable solution is not entertainment - listening to music and watching movies is entertainment. We pay for reliable solution that is not wiping out what costs time and money. If they provide unreliable solution then they should provide some info, procedure or perhaps a way for backup. They don't more frequently thses days (comapring to what I saw few years ago) so, I lost already two episodes of TV show that I purchased from their store and I am upset as well.
    I rely on Apple TV a lot, but I feel I am wasting my time if company start treating me similarily like other big company (figure out which one) that I left for ALL Apple solutions in 2003.
    Advises in manner "do not restart" are not appropriate, because sometimes you do not have control over power outage in your area and system should consider those as well (apart of other things that may delete content accidentally).

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 generation 2 VM corrupted system partition after restart

    Hi
    We have a cluster running on Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V feature.
    One VM that has Windows 2012 R2 Standard OS installed (generation 2) was corrupted via restart.
    VM has 3 virtual disks (VHDX) - first for system (dynamic size), second for SQL_data (fixed size) , third for SQL_logs (fixed size)
    Yesterday, I restarted VM and VM didn't come up, I got error
    - 'Boot Failed. Windows Boot Manager'
    - 'Boot Failed. EFI SCSI Device'
    Looked all three VHDX we noticed that the first one (system) was corrupted - partition and MBR are gone inside VHDX.
    Second and third one are OK, we can mount them and access all data on it.
    It looks like on first VHDX (system with SQL 2014 installed) partition was corrupted, so we can't do repair because it's says unknown partition.
    There were no updates applied to VM, corrupted partition is 40GB size (dynamical) with 18GB of data used.
    This is first generation 2 VM that we have, all others are generation 1 without any problems.
    Can anyone please explain us, how can this happened, since we did nothing inside VM, also cluster reports no errors, checking VHDX looks fine, just partition inside got corrupted.
    We like to find out what happened, before we deploy more Win2012 R2 VM (gen2) in production envirionment.
    Thank you in advance
    Regards
    Mike

    Hi Mike ,
     " The most common causes of data corruption in the VHD file are from:
    Data corruption due to faulty / failing physical storage
    Data corruption due to transferring files over faulty / failing networks

  • How to recover sony ARW files deleted by Aperture after importing?

    I imported some Sony RAW photos (in .ARW format, shot by Sony Nex 6) from a SDXC card into Aperture library with my MacBook Pro, and as usual I let Aperture deleted the files on the SDXC card (i.e. I did not deleted the files using Finder).  Unfortunately I accidentally deleted the imported ARW files (as masters in the Aperture library) by Carbon Capy Cloner (I made a copy in the wrong direction after editing the photos).  Now I am trying to recover those ARW files.  I used several Photo recovery software but they do not recognize any deleted ARW files on the SD card (nor on my hard drive). The best result was from Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery software, which recognizes those deleted ARW files as NEF files but the size of each photo is only 32KB (it shows the photo in its preview).  I recovered them, but no software can open those 32KB NEF files.  It appears to me that Aperture somehow deleted the ARW files on the SD card in a way (very different from Finder deletion) that photo recovery software can't recognize them.  Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

    Yes I understand that trying to recover from my HD is more difficult, so my attention is on the card now.  In fact, I tried to use Stellar to recover from the HD as well and I got tons of other photos and non of them is ARW.
    I have kept both the HD and the card not being used anymore (I stopped using it right after I made the copy in the wrong direction, and the card is not being used after Aperture deleted the photos), so the data should be there.  I tested with Stellar on a new card.  I shot some ARW photos and format the card on my NEX 6 camera, then try to recover them with Stellar.  Same result: no ARW files, only NEF files of size 32KB or less (the photos in the preview are correct).  Strange.  I tried Remo software, no ARW either, not even NEF files.  I guess I am using the wrong recovery software (although they advertise that they recover ARW files).  Is there any recovery software that DOES recover ARW photos shot by Sony NEX 6?

  • Setting up desktop background from iphoto resets after restarting my Mac OS..

    Hello,
    I have the Mac Os X 10.7.3 version on 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 processor. I use Iphoto '11 version 9.2.3. My iphoto library shared on /Users/Shared/Ress.sparseimage and it's formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Two users are using same library and we have no problem while sharing this library.
    The only problem occurs when I tried to set up the desktop background from iphoto. When I change the background from iphoto application and restart my computer, the desktop background resets to Andromeda Galaxy.
    The reason it resets the background to Galaxy because the volume that contains shared library starts slower. I know this for sure because when I check the Devices section from Finder as soon as the computer starts I can’t see my shared volume on Devices and it takes up 5 or 10 seconds to appear in there.
    In my opinion, somehow late launch for this shared volume changes the background’s path to /Library/Desktop Pictures and the first picture in there Andromeda Galaxy.jpg.
    We can fix this problem by copying the picture to the path /Library/Desktop Pictures. But unfortunately this solution is very basic and will not satisfy me because I don’t want to copy my pictures from one path to another every time I want to change the background. That’s very frustrating.
    I would like change my background from iphoto application. In fact when I use iphoto without sharing and setup the background from iphoto application, I don’t face this problem. This problem only occurs when I share my iphoto library on a volume as a sparseimage.
    Best Regards,
    HB

    Just grab a bunch of photo's you want and place them into a new folder in your User/Pictures named desktop pics or something.
    Then you can drag and drop copy certain ones from the shared iPhoto Library.
    I keep my desktop and iPhoto Libraries seperate, iPhoto is personal and desktop pictures are just that. No need to waste space in iPhoto as I have over 680 desktop pictures and about 8000 iPhoto pictures, so I don't want to overload iPhoto anymore that it is already.
    Once you get large enough desktop pictures the matter becomes mute, just rotate them every 30 or so minutes and it toss in a few new ones from iPhoto when you wish.
    If you didn't know, you can point the system preferences > desktop pictures at a new folder in your Pictures folder,  there is no need to use the iPhoto Library or drop them into /Library/Desktop Pictures, this is rather risky to be messing inside that folder, in fact in 10.7 Apple has made it invisible to stop people from messing around in there.
    Just click the little "+" sign to add a new folder in System Preferences > Desktop & Screensaver preferences.

  • Outlook shows SOME deleted messages even after restart

    I'm having a problem with deleting messages on Exchange (IMAP). This problem falls somewhere between javamail, Exchange, and Outlook. I do something like this:
        folder = store.getFolder(folderPath);
        folder.open(Folder.READ_WRITE);
        Message[] msgs = folder.getMessages();
        // do processing
        for ( Message m : msgs )
            m.setFlag( javax.mail.Flags.Flag.DELETED, true );
        folder.close(true); //  Expunge all messages w/DELETED flagThis works MOST of the time. For some reason, Outlook 2003 continues to show SOME of the deleted messages in the folder, even if I click on "Send/Receive", and even if I restart Outlook. No exceptions occur during the processing.
    I also wrote a simple program to get all messages in the folder. This program shows that there are 0 messages in the folder, but they continue to show up in Outlook. Anyone know why Outlook still displays these "phantom" messages!?
    TIA,
    Vick

    Here's a debug session sample where the folder shows 2 messages in Outlook, but none in JavaMail. The two messages in Outlook can be opened and viewed. They remain even after "Send/Receive" and restart of Outlook. These two "phantom" messages were deleted with JavaMail in a previous pass using code shown in previous post.

  • Video Files absent from Streming after restart

    If I connect to an iTunes library that has video in it (pod casts/movies/TV Shows) after I restart the aTV all the videos go missing from the play lists. I have to turn off itunes, disconnect from that iTunes streaming computer and reconnect it to get the videos back. This also happens when I add content to an iTunes library that is already attached to the aTV as source. Some content shows up, some content doesn't. This is uber frustrating. Has anyone else seen this and figured out a way around it?

    Hi. Did you ever resolve this problem? I'm having the same issue and can't find a resolution.
    Thanks!

  • Report jobs deleted from q after restart?

    We submit ~100 jobs to the NT 6.0 report server with the queue patch. When the server is rebooted, all the jobs are lost and have to be resubmitted. (The queue tables are empty). Is this by design? Is there a way to prevent this?
    thanks,
    jd

    IS there really nobody except me using the RW_SERVER_JOB_QUEUE functionality?

  • My recent items list appears again after restart. How do I delete it for good?

    When I turn on the computer, the recent items list still displays the documents and applications I worked with a few days ago. I delete it, and after restarting the computer, it displays the same list again (not a new list, but the exact same items over and over again).  Any tips?

    Select the iPod shuffle in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES).  If this is a current 4th (or 3rd) gen iPod shuffle, you should be able to see the contents of the shuffle by type, intented under the shuffle's name (still in the sidebar).  Select Music or Audiobooks (not sure where those items from the library will be listed).  The items will be listed to the right, for each category.  Find the items, select, and delete.
    It's on page 20 of the manual
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPod_shuffle_4thgen_User_Guide.pdf
    NOTE:  If this is an 1st or 2nd gen iPod shuffle, select the iPod shuffle in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES).  Over to the right, go to the Contents tab, where the items are listed.  Select and delete them from this list.
    I find it more convenient to make a playlist in iTunes with things I want to put on the shuffle.  I then set up automatic syncing (or use autofill) to have iTunes load the shuffle from that playlist, automatically.

  • File.delete() not working properly

    Hi Forum!!
    I am trying with the below code :
    File file = new file("path");
    try{
    if(file.exists())
    System.+gc+();
    file.delete();
    System.+out+.println("Control in delete trx file after deletion"+ file.exists());
    }catch(SecurityException se){
    String msg= "Delete trx file if 3gttz file created : IO Problems";
    Log.+error+(msg, se);
    }file.exists() returns false But I when I check file, it still exhists with content 0 bytes .
    Is there a way to remove the entire file from the directory rather than deleting only the
    contents ? Need not to tell I did my initial search to solve the problem.
    Thanks

  • Unable to run a Batch File Operating System Command

    Using XI 3.0, I am unable to run a Batch File Operating System Command After Message Processing.
    My Batch file:
    gpg -se -r BOA3RSKY --armor --passphrase-fd 0 %1 < C:\Progra~1\GNU\GnuPG\gpgin
    My Command Line (ID scenario)
    exec "cmd.exe /c C:\Progra~1\GNU\GnuPG\boagpg.bat %F"
    If I execute
    exec "cmd.exe /c type C:\Progra~1\GNU\GnuPG\boagpg.bat >xis.txt"
    It displays the contents of boagpg.bat file in xis.txt.
    I just don't understand why when I run the batch file, I would expect an %F.asc encrypted file in the same directory as the %F unencrypted file.
    Any ideas?
    or will I need Basis to create commands that will allow me to run GPG from XI Command Line?

  • After running Magician app many files where deleted and after restarting I received the language portion of when you first start to set up a new Mac

    After running Magician app many files where deleted from my computer, nothing new,  After restarting I received the language portion of when you first start to set up a new Mac. Except after the language portion it went immediately to 5 options; install back-up from Time Machine, Disk Utility, Restart from start up disc, etc. I tried doing them all. Disc repair, rebooting from TM, but I don't save everything from TM I use an external HD for backup. None of those options are working for me. Now I get a grey screen with a flashing globe for so many minutes then a folder appears with a ? In the middle of it. What am I to do? Can anyone help me, please!!!

    I appreciate the extra forums you suggested I look into. I ended up forceing a Safe Mode reboot on my Mac  holding the Shift key. I let the installation process commence and I'm back to the way things were.

  • Unresponsive system but mouse still moves; even after restart

    I was transferring a few files over my LAN wirelessly via file sharing to another macbook (B) when that macbook was closed and caused a disconnect. My macbook (A) has experienced issues since this disconnect. Even after restarts and resetting the pram, my system is unresponsive. The mouse will move but I cannot open applications, folders, files, or even the menu. It is as if my mouse is moving over top a picture of the desktop. I did manage to click and highlight my HD icon once but as soon as I did, the color wheel showed up and never stopped. My hard drive has over 10GB of space free. I was able to do a target disk boot and test the drive and its ok according to disk utility. Any ideas about what I could do would be greatly appreciated...preferably without wiping the hard drive.

    The first issue occurred while I was transferring large files from one computer to another via afp file sharing over my wireless network. In the middle of this transfer, someone closed the receiving macbook. The macbook sending the files didn't respond well after this. It would intermittently freeze without a linked resource draining process. I believe the first occurrence was when I tried to right click a file that had been interrupted during transfer. I forced a restart, used the killall Finder command in terminal thinking that it might still be trying to transfer the file to a ghost in some way...even though that didn't make sense. I was able to verify and repair the external drive the file was on. After doing this and resetting the PRAM, it was back to normal for a little while. After a bit of normal activity (nothing strenuous), it began to freeze again. I tried the same steps and also booted in target disk mode so I could use the other macbook to run diagnostics. The drive got repaired. I attempted to restart the affected macbook but I couldn't do anymore than one thing and the never-ending colorwheel would appear. That one thing could be a single click on a file or an attempt of opening an application. After that I turned to this discussion forum after already impatiently attempting to safe mode boot and repair disk permissions. I tried this again with patience after your suggestion. It worked for a few hours and I was able to surf the web once more and go about the usual. I pulled up dashboard and pressed command+ to bring up the list of widgets and it froze on me again. I attempted previous steps again after restarting but there has been no difference in response. Throughout the entirety of this experience, there have been no error messages. Also, there's no difference in behavior if I disconnect everything but the power cable.
    Sorry for the lengthy post but hopefully it will be helpful.
