Sound off after Sleep

Windows 7 / E205 S1904 / Realtek HD Audio Manager/   After sleep about 33% of the time there is no sound. If the laptop is shut down, the sound usually comes back. Have reinstalled the driver from Toshiba site. Any suggestions?
Many thanks
Solved!
Go to Solution.

This appears to be completely a Realtek Software (Driver) problem, that Toshiba is not getting Realtek to fix even a year after the issue has been brought to public notice.
No permanent fix can really be made unless Toshiba compel Realtek to fix their driver software.
As for the work-around shown in an above post, after even further tweaking, it was noticed that the Microphone resetting usually does not need to be done.
So,to restate:
When putting the laptop to sleep and waking back up in a different power state than it went to sleep in, sounds stop working.
Example: Power plugged in, put laptop to sleep, power unplugged, wake up laptop, no sounds (and no microphone).
A reboot fixes this. This means it is a software (driver) problem & not a hardware problem.
As can be seen from the suggestion above, putting the laptop to sleep and starting up again in the same power mode that was in effect before the sound was lost, was one solution. However this is random, sometimes it works, more often it doesn't, and it is often inconvenient to put the laptop to sleep again when it is noticed sound is not working.
The quick fix, more concise  (workaround) that seems to work most all the time is:
Unplug the power
Click the Start button, type in the "Search Program and files" box: Sounds
Select: Change system sounds
Select the: Playback :tab and right click on: Speakers (Realtek)
If : Show Disabled Devices : is unticked, Click on: Show Disabled Devices : to ensure it is selected (ticked)
Right Click again on: Speakers (Realtek)
If : Show Disconnected Devices : is unticked, Click on: Show Disconnected Devices : to ensure it is selected (ticked)
Right Click again on: Speakers (Realtek)
Click on: Disable
Right Click again on: Speakers (Realtek)
Click on: Enable
Plug the power cable back in
In case this does not work, use the procedure shown in the post further above where the microphone is also disabled and enabled.
If by chance you do this and you end up not being able to find your Speaker or Microphone icon in the Change sound card settings (Change System Sounds) dialog:
Click the Start button, type in the "Search Program and files" box: fix sound
Click on: Find and fix audio playback problems & go through the fix steps.
Repeat above step for Find and fix audio recording problems
This usually gets back an audio device that has been disabled and cannot be found in the "Change sound card settings" dialog. (It does not ever fix the "no sound" problem.)
Again, this is a TEMPORARILY FIX to this VERY IRRITATING LONG PENDING PROBLEM that has been neglected by Toshiba and Realtek.
Laptop: QOSMIO F60
O/S : Windows 7-64bit
All drivers and Windows O/S software up to date.
One ends up having no choice but to believe that the management of Toshiba does not really care all that much about its customers when they leave a known problem unfixed for years. That is sad, considering Toshiba's slogan is "Leading Innovation." A broken innovation is just that, broken, and a real leader does not leave its products broken.

  • Pismo Sound Problems after Sleep in Tiger

Hi all. New to the forums and returning to Macs after years of cursing Bill Gates. Picked up a Powerbook Pismo from a friend and have been having some fun with it, but I have one problem I can't solve. I replaced the hard drive (saved the old one) and installed Tiger and 1GB of memory on the machine. All seemed well until I noticed that the sound would not work sometimes after sleeping. The sound will usually return with a reboot, but sometimes I'll have to actually turn the machine off, and clear the PRAM to get the sound to come back. Sometimes, the volume and screen controls will both not work at all (pop up doesn't even appear when the keys are pressed), sometimes it's just that the sound doesn't work, but everything looks right on the screen. I've also had the sound and screen buttons not work only to have pop ups suddenly appear and the adjustments happen several minutes after I pressed the keys. So far I've tried:
    Clearing the PRAM
    Checked the Pram Battery (ok)
    Reinstalled Tiger (Still loses sound)
Downgraded to 10.3 (problem persists, and seems worse)
In system information on Tiger it says "there was an error when retrieving that information" when you click on the sound hardware.
The machine is a 500mhz Pismo with a 48gig drive and 1 gig of Memory (133mhz, would that cause this sort of problem?)
I have not tried going back to OS9 to see if the disappearing sound resolves as I don't currently have an OS9 disk.
This sure seems like a software problem, but I'm starting to wonder. I really like this machine and want to get it to work! Help!

    Maxstang, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Did you repair permissions after you installed Tiger? Have you updated Tiger to 10.4.11?
Here's the Sound troubleshooting info in the Pismo Service Manual.
    No sound from speaker(s)
    1. Verify mute mode is not enabled (F6 on the keyboard).
    2. Check the volume setting in the Sound control panel.
    3. Verify no external speakers or headphones are plugged in.
    4. Reset PRAM.
    5. Make sure speaker cable is plugged into sound card.
    6. Replace sound card.
    7. Replace speakers (part of the top case).
    8. Replace I/O logic board
Startup sound is heard, then no sound from speaker(s)
    1. Remove sound preferences from System Folder, reset PRAM,
    then restart.
    2. Perform clean installation of system software.
Had the Pismo previously had OS X installed. There's a firmware update (Boot ROM version 4.1.8) that should be installed prior to installing OS X. However, when I got my Pismo with Tiger installed, the firmware was not updated (have since updated). However, I don't think this could be the cause of your problem, since I had no sound problems when the update was not installed.
The PC133 RAM (which runs at 100MHz) should not be the problem. I have PC133 RAM in my Pismo.
Since you replaced the HD, could you have disturbed the connection to the Sound Card. The Sound Card is located to the upper-right of the HD. Here's a helpful laptop site.

  • Unable to turn imac on or off after sleep mode

I have a fairly new iMac and I installed Leopard yesterday. When the computer goes to sleep, I am unable to get it back on by either pressing the keyboard or the power button. The only thing I can do is to unplug and re-plug the computer. When the computer comes back on, I get a message that OS X unexpectedly was interrupted, so I know the operating system is still running in the background.
Has anybody else had this problem or can recommend a solution. I now set my preferences so that the computer will never go to sleep.

I have a similar problem of "video freeze" on my 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4 15 inch with an Apple 21 inch display attached. The large display is exclusive since the powerPC is run with the display lid closed.
Upon wake up after sleep, the video screen stays black, but I hear disk noise in the background indicating some level of 10.5 operation.
The only recovery I've found so far is to open the display lid on the PowerPC and press the power key until reboot.

  • Airport Turns Off After Sleep

After I sleep my Mac, sometimes Airport is turned off and I can't get on the Web. If I go to network preferences and view the airport connection, I can't turn airport on again. If I lock the connection to prevent further changes, once Airport turns itself off the lock is unlocked. Rebooting will turn Airport on and reestablish the connection. How can I prevent/circumvent this problem without having to reboot?
Someone suggested that another network might be interfering and I should change the channel, but I don't know how to do this... Explanation or other ideas?

I wish I could help, but I have the same problem. When my G5 Tower goes to sleep, I lose Airport connection. When it wakes, Airport is on but will not reconnect. Attempts to connect result in errors (trying again doesn't help). It's not the Airport Extreme, since that works fine with other computers. It's not this specific network (I have two parallel accounts on the Airport Extreme - one public, one private) and it won't connect at all. The only thing that works is a complete reboot. I've tried deleting preferences, resetting the network connection (ie wiping it out, re-establishing the network with password etc) and nothing happens. Is the card dying?

  • Audio is off after sleep

New Mac mini has a problem. When I wake it from sleep the audio is off and the speaker icon in the top bar is grayed out. I have to unplug/re-plug the headphones for it to output sound... the speaker icon also becomes black again as well as the volume slider will then operate.
    Any ideas?

  • T42 Bluetooth Issue - always off after sleep

Whenever I resume my ThinkPad T42 from sleep/standby the bluetooth radio is off and I have to go into ThinkVantage Access Connections to turn it back on before I can use my bluetooth mouse.  All my IBM/Lenovo drivers are up-to-date, and I have tried turning off and back on the wireless radios in the BIOS.  Anyone have any other suggestions on how I can lift the lid of my laptop and have the bluetooth radio already on and ready for use?  Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

What about the Bluetooth-state after shutting down the computer and turning it on?
    Is BT then disabled, too?
In that case remove the BIOS-battery for a few minutes. After that the factory-default settings with enabled BT should be active.

  • Lion loses sound preferences after sleep

I have a 27" iMac 2011 quad core i7  3.4ghz running Lion 10.7.1. with a dual display setup (Apple 27" LED). I use a M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB sound interface with the latest drivers installed. After waking the computer from sleep, the Fast Track Pro is no longer functional unless I do a complete reboot.Any thoughts or fixes?

This only seems to affect one machine in our environment.  However, its causing lots a havoc on that one users machine.

  • Need to turn bluetooth off after sleep so that apple mouse is 'seen' again

i have an apple bluetooth mightymouse bluetooth. after my macbook pro goes to sleep, i need to turn bluetooth off then on again on the MBP so that the bt mouse is seen again. if i don't do that, the mbp never reconnects with the mouse. any hints?
I have set off the 'allow bt devices to wake up computer from sleep' to save battery life on the mbp.
    p

I use a Kensington PilotMouse Bluetooth and it looses it's connection from the MBP because the mouse turns off to prolong battery life. When I return the computer from sleep, I have to click the mouse buttons a few times... and wait up to 10 seconds, but it eventually reconnects once the laser on the mouse turns back on. Have you tried this?
    I hope this helps.
    Take care,
    Chris

  • HP-HDX 18t w/ Vista 32 won't retain default sound source after sleeping

That about sums it up. It's a brand new HP HDX 18t laptop running Vista32. It's setup with HDMI to our flat-panel TV and we have a Turtle Beach Audio Advantage-Micro usb card so we can use the SPDIF digital audio passthrough to get the 5-1 dolby sound to the surround sound receiver. It all works as it should playing Blu-Ray DVDs as well as any other sound... no problem. If we completely shutdown and then turn it back on it's fine. But if we put it into sleep or hibernate mode instead, then it loses the default sound source setting we've chosen (SPDIF) and we have to manually reselect it. Same thing if we disconnect it entirely. But that makes some sense and we don't plan to do that a lot so it's not as big a deal.
    Thanks for any insights.
I hope I've provided enough info.

I have the macbook pro 13 inch 2,66 Ghz april 2010 model.
I can't get my headphones to work in Windows 7, 64 bit(bootcamp). It seems like the cirrus logic CS 206 A (AB13)drivers are the problem.
I have installed the latest drivers, have set the headphones to standard audio device (I don't know how you call that option in english as my windows is dutch). I also disabled the macbook speakers, the digital audio device and nothing seems to work. I can play music through my macbook but can't play it through my headphones. In mac osx there is no problem at all doing this, the problem is only in windodws 7.
It's very annoying because I would like to play some games.
And yes I've installed the 64 bit drivers.

  • Sound off after using Headphones- next Startup

After utilizing headphones and shutting down computer (w/ phones still plugged in) - the next time the E205 Satellite is started there is no sound. So is there a way to prevent this, other than obviously remembering to unplug the phones !  Machine seems to default to headphones.  Thanks

  • W530 secondary HDD powers off after sleep

Hello, I have a Lenovo W530 and replaced my optical drive with a second HDD caddy and I recently did a fresh install to Windows 8.1. When ever the laptop returns from sleep the second HDD shuts off. I did not have this issue with Windows 7. I have tried installing Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver as others have suggested in another forum. This did not solve my issue. Is anyone able to help? Thanks!

    Try using this registry tweak?

  • Satellite P100 - No sound after sleep mode or hibernation on Windows 7

    Hello everybody,
I am desperately looking for a solution for my sound problem on my PC after having browsed many forums that were talking about the same issue but without effective solutions either.
I am posting this message as I am having a Toshiba P100-488 laptop running Windows 7 64 Bits (after having upgraded the CPU) and which is using a Conexant CX20549 sound chip.
Everything is working properly and so does the sound chip thanks to a Windows 7 64 Bits driver installed but I noticed that after coming back from the sleep mode or hibernation, then sound device is still recognized in the Device Manager and shown as active in the Control Panel and the task bar but unfortunately, no sound is coming out of the speakers.
I have tried several drivers (including those of Dell and HP on some sites) but still the same problem.
Also, I have tried to update the driver from Windows Update that suggested the Conexant SmartAudio HD2 but same behaviour.
Is there any of you who would have a solution for me or perhaps a relevant driver that could solve this annoying issue ?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Best Regards,
    Fred

This appears to be completely a Realtek Software (Driver) problem, that has not been fixed well over a year after the issue has been brought to public ([Toshiba Forum|http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Audio-Sound/Sound-off-after-Sleep/td-p/173036|Toshiba Forum]) notice.
When putting the laptop to sleep and waking back up in a different power state than it went to sleep in, sounds stop working.
Example: +Power plugged in, put laptop to sleep, power unplugged, wake up laptop, no sounds (and no microphone).+
A reboot fixes this. This points to a software (driver) problem & not a hardware problem.
Putting the laptop to sleep and starting up again in the same power mode that was in effect before the sound was lost is one way to avoid this happening. However this appears random, sometimes it works, more often it doesn't, and it is often inconvenient to put the laptop to sleep again when it is noticed sound is not working.
The quick fix, (workaround) that seems to work most all of the time {color:#0000FF}(_[m-267849#267849]_){color}in another post on this forum.
This is a *TEMPORARILY FIX* to this {color:#ff0000}*VERY IRRITATING LONG PENDING PROBLEM*{color} that has been {color:#ff0000}*neglected*{color} by Toshiba and Realtek.
One ends up having no choice but to believe that the management of Toshiba does not really care all that much about its customers when they leave a known problem unfixed for years. That is sad, considering Toshiba's slogan is "Leading Innovation." A broken innovation is just that, broken, and a +real+ leader does not leave its products broken.

  • How to make trackpad automatically reconnect after sleep?

I have a magic trackpad and an MB Pro.
When I return to the computer after it has been sleeping overnight, the magic trackpad will not reconnect automatically.  If the computer sleeps briefly, the connection is restored automatically.  If the trackpad is powered off after sleep, it will reconnect when powered on.  But after a long sleep, or perhaps when I have disconnected the laptop for a while I cannot easily make it reconnect.
It will not reconnect if: I click the power button, click the trackpad, select the trackpad by name and connect from the bluetooth menubar item, connect manually through bluetooth preferences, or turn off the trackpad entirely then turn it on again (force into discovery mode).
The only somewhat reliable way I have found to reconnect is: 1) turn off trackpad power, 2) go to trackpad preferences, 3) set up bluetooth device, 4) power on trackpad, 5) select continue when device is found.
When disconnected, in bluetooth preferences, the device is shown as being paired.  I added it to Favorites.  It is discoverable.  Battery power is good.
I can reproduce the same symptoms with these steps: 1) put the computer to sleep, 2) manually turn off the trackpad, 3) turn on the trackpad again (it blinks, indicating attempt to discover), 4) wake the computer.
Can anyone help me find a less time-consuming way to re-establish a connection when the computer wakes from sleep?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried the 'root bridge' in Access Point mode but the remote devices did not try to reconnect. I also tried 'non-root bridge', 'root bridge with network clients', 'automatic' etc. I let it sit for a few minutes after each change to see if it helped.
I've going to change it to 'Access Point' again and leave it overnight to see if one of the three remote Workgroup Bridges that are currently unavailable will re-connect.
I know if I ask the site electricians to power the remote Workgroupd Bridges off and on they will connect for a while - its quite frustrating!
    Thanks again

  • Strange sound out of speaker after sleep, no switch off

    Hello,
just minutes ago, when I woke up my G4 800 QS, OS 10.4.9, after about one hour sleep mode, there was a beeping sound from the speaker, that did beep...beep....beep in a frequenz of about 60 to 90 beeps/minute. I could operate the Mac, but there was no information about errors, just a transluctant gray speaker sign that appeared on the screen, similar to the one that appeares when you push the eject button for the dvd-drive. I had no chance to turn the beep off. When I opend systemcontrol and marked the sound off field, the sound was off for about 2 seconds and then the sound was automaticaly turned on again. I did a restart, and everything was alright again and quiet as an hour before.
I use Macs for 10 years know, but I have neither heard that sound nor seen that transluctant speaker sign in that time.
Does anybody have an idea what that was or what that ongoing beeping means?
    Regards
    Oliver

That's a strange/new one. Do you have the latest update for your version of OS X?
In addition to that I'd try repairing permissions, go to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and select your drive and click "Repair Permissions." This doesn't really sound like something that that could fix but you never know. After that we could try deleting the sound preference list but I don't have a Mac now until Apple puts the new iMacs out so someone will have to aid you with the location of the file.

  • Mail sound after sleep

    Hi
Sometimes after sleeping my 5K iMac stops playing sounds from mail (all other sounds work fine).
If you go into the mail settings and change the sound it doesn't make any noise. Quitting mail and relauching fixes the issue.
    Anyone else the same?

    same here
    I had power nap on.
    I turned off power nap.
Now after it goes to sleep, it will wake up and still make the sent sound.
    good luck
