Source browsing in Studio 11

After installing Studio 11 and looking around a bit I've been wondering what has happened to source browsing (call graphs, C++ hierarchies). The compiler switches for generating source browsing information have been dropped and in looking at the release notes from Studio 10, 9, 8 I don't see any mention that this capability has been dropped. Is source browsing no longer a part of the developer tools? If so, any suggestions on what to use in its place?
Thanks,
Steve

I've been using CodeForge which has decent code completion features. It would be nice to have something like that for Studio. Basically, as I work, there are a few things I always need to do:
1) What's that method again? It's a pain to have to go back to some documentation or dig through headers to find a function you need.
2) Where is this method defined? In case I need to edit the definition.
3) Where is this method implemented? In case I need to see what it does.
In graduate school especially I seem to write code by the truckload. Source code management and autocompletion let me work 5-25% faster - depending if I know the APIs. I have pthread, for example, pretty much memorized, but have to crack a book for anything Gnome or Motif related. Mostly I look up the exact function name and the parameter list.
I generally don't browse object graphs, but call graphs are very useful. Code folding would be super-sweet, especially if I could fold #ifdef's. Not many tasks are more annoying than having to slog through conditional compiles.
This is just my humble opinion of what would be useful. As background I'm a professional developer on Linux and Windows and a PhD candidate at George Mason Univ. I basically program all day and then go home and code some more. Generally I use freely available tools, but am willing to shuck out the money to make coding less of a pain. For example, I purchased licenses for CodeForge to help with C/C++ and Allegro Common Lisp.

  • Source Browsing/Call Graphing non-Forte Project

Hi all. I have a quick question. Hopefully the answer is just as quick!
I have a currently pre-built project that was developed by hand, all Makefiles, source-code etc. It compiles cleanly with Forte but I would like to take advantage of the UI tools such as source browsing and call graphing. Is there a way to do this providing possibly the source code and the Makefiles and have it automatically traverse my source code tree?
    Thanks in advance!
    Brendan Frey

You have to add "-sb" to your compiler flags.
    See CC -flags
    Enjoy!

  • Binding a component to more than one data source in Design Studio 1.3

    Hi All,
Is it possible to bind more than one data source to a component in Design Studio 1.3?
I have 2 Bex queries- one having the current year data(say 06.2013-05.2014) and the other having the previous year data(say 06.2012-05.2013).
I want to create a column chart with x axis labels as 06,07,08.............01,02,03,04,05.
The 05 will show 2 columns for 05.2014 and 05.2013
The 04 will show 2 columns for 04.2014 and 04.2013
    and so on
The 06 will show 2 columns for 06.2013 and 05.2012.
Can this be achieved in Design Studio if only one data source is possible for a column chart?
Thanks in advance for your responses,
    Sarah

I don't see where this is possible out of the box as the properties for the chart show only one data source
Is the data coming from one InfoProvider?  If so could you create one query that shows current year and with a BEx variable/offset show prior year?

  • How to delete a View in data source in Essbase Studio

Hi All, I am not able to delete the existing View in datasource as one of the properties of the View has been changed and studio is not picking up those changes. I removed all dependencies(dimensional elements, Alias set, Hierarchies, Schemas). I tried to drop the View and add it again but the option to drop the view is grayed out. I restarted the Studio service as well and tried it in vain. Can anyone help on this issue.
    Thanks in Advance,

that is one of the problems with Studio. Once added you can't remove a table or view from a datasource connection. This is changed in 11.1.2.

  • Good reference source for DVD Studio P 4

I just purchased DVD Studio Pro 4. I'm looking for an author that will walk me through the process of DVD SP4 similar to Scott Kelby's style with Photoshop. Any suggestions?

I just wanted to chime in on GPRM partitioning. If you already understand GPRMs in general, then you pretty much understand partitioning already as well. There are a few gotcha's, but in the most general sense, it's dividing registers which are 16 bits in length, into smaller registers, which are then 8 bits in length, or 4 bits in length, and so on.
This is not good for everything you do, but it is good for basic things. Creating a counting script, and flagging menus, or tracks, all are good places to split register values to gain greater flexability and maintain free registers.
As Hal said though, sometimes it's a good idea to not "just" master DVD Studio Pro, but to instead think more like an author and learn to use the scripting as a spec author would. You'll find that this kind of authoring is transportable into other systems and will help you as you move from authoring platform to platform.
Bitshifting for example, is quite common in spec authoring. Sharing register values and looking at parts of the register for answers through bitwise functions for example, has been a standard authoring practise long before DVDSP. Understanding the bit structure of existing SPRMs and how to maximize the use of GPRMs through Bitwise is essential.
If you ever come to edit DVDs after the fact, it's essential to understand that level of scripting, as you will see it all over the abstraction layer.
The problems with Books is, it takes almost a year to go from idea, to book, and they don't often sell well enough, or appeal to the masses enough to cover such specialized topics such as GPRM partitioning. But user groups, forums, and free tutorials are often able to pick up that slack left by published books.
While I have not seen anyone pickup the topic of GPRM partitioning in a free tutorial, I am sure someone will in due time.
Check out Ken Stone's FCP site for a ton of free tutorials. I think he easily has the widest selection, and all will cost you nothing.
As for forums, I think this forum has become the premiere forum for DVDSP customers. The most willing to help minds are all here at some point or another, and you can often get a good answer to your question.
If you want to learn scripting, there are plenty of tutorials out there now. Start small, and you will grow. Once you get it, it's a great toolset to have on your side.

I have tried this example: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/quick_thoughts/archive/2014/07/13/rest-apis-in-app-studio-part-2-changing-the-source-code.aspx but unfortunately can only get it to half work ( ie showing only the movie titles no images or synopsis etc)

  • Creating mdf file from a database project in Visual Studio for Web

I am very new to database programming in Visual Studio and SQL Server Express LocalDB. I went through a walk through of setting up a database project (using visual studio express 2013 for web and SQL Server Express LocalDB), adding tables and entering data
    and everything worked fine:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms233763.aspx
Then I wanted to move on to trying to build a simple application to access this database so I looked into the following tutorial:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms171890.aspx
In a nutshell the tutorial says to add a new datasource and navigate to the database file, and it is looking for an .mdf file.
The database project that I created does not have an mdf file in it, only sql file, visual studio project, dbmdl file, options file, source browser database, etc.
How do I create this .mdf file, that step didn't seem to be explained in the first tutorial. I tried running the project, but didn't see any build options for creating the .mdf file. Again, sorry for the absolute beginner question.

    Thanks edencorbin
I am glad to hear that it was helpful and you succeed :-)

  • Sun Studio 11: Cannot create a new file

When I want to create a new *.h or *.cc file in my CVS mounted directory tree, studio raises it's famous "Unexpected Exception" dialog with a java stack trace. I have them prepared if you want, I just wanted to check before if there is some already known bug or advice. This worked flawlessly on Sun Studio 10.
As for source browser (another topic in this forum), yeah, I would also very much like some kind of source browser, e.g. to be able to find all definitions/calls to my virtual method, have a class hierarchy...
And one final note on the constant problems in communication between NetBeans and XEmacs, especially if there are two or more XEmacs windows open. Initially all works ok, but with time it starts...source error hyper links from make/build window and search dialog fail to open and position in the source file, then it can't open a file from Filesystems window, and when I restart the SunStudio, everything works again for some time.
This was most annoying in release 9, then somewhat better in 10 but still present, and I see now nothing is better in release 11.
    Details:
    OS = SunOS 5.8 Generic_117350-26
    HW = sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Blade-1500
    SunStudio 11, netbeans 3.5V11, jdk1.5.0_06
(all mounted from a Solaris 9 driven server)

    Best regards.

About XEmacs: yes, the communication between IDE and
XEmacs is not stable. It was a little bit improved in
    Sun Studio
10, but not enough. We plan to improve it in next
    release. I'll
try to create a test case according to your
    description. BTW,
why there are two or more XEmacs windows? Usually
    there
should be only one window with many buffers. I don't
    think
Sun Studio IDE can manage several XEmacs windows. Why? Because it is a great help to be able to watch two different buffers/modules at the same time when writing source code. If there is only one window with many buffers, I have to either split window in two (Ctrl X 2) or continuously switch between two buffers, which is annoying.
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • Pros and Cons of the Sun studio IDE

    Hi all,
I have played a bit with the Sun studio now and I want to give you some feedback.
First of all, my background. I am working in a team with about 20 developers, developing a C++ application on Solaris.
Last time I stumbled across an installed Sun Studio 9 and gave it a try.
Initially I was verry impressed by the great debugger- and analyzer frontends, they look nice and work well.
After using the debugger from time to time and really enjoyed it, I thought about testing the studio for all-day work.
So, here are my impressions and the things that keep me away from using it.
    1. The default editor isn't very usefull. For example, I missed regular expression search (and replace) and the feature to mark columns. Furthermore I really missed syntax highlightning for some other file types like sql- and config files, or even the feature to create my own. By the way, the predefined highlightning for C-files is also a bit too simple.
    2. I think the external editor plugin is a bit buggy too, because sometimes I have trash in files that I have edited before. But this can also be my fault, because I use gvim and some editor macros to do sccs-actions. I think the problems occur mainly if I use this macros. In every case the external editor is not really an alternative way for me.
    2. In our team we are using teamware as version-control tool and it does a really good job. So for Workshop 7 we have some editor macros and the teamware-tools from version 6. In the studio I have found the feature to create my own version control profiles, but this is a hard way with many tries and errors. For example I have never accomplished it to set further status information in the explorer window, it's 'Local' all the time.
    3. The studio needs very much memory, I think about 250 MB or so. This is impressive, especially if all the 20 people in our team would start sunstudio. I have found a hint somewhere in the docu that the studio can work in a client-server mode over a VNC, but I haven't tried it because I don't know what the admins would say if I start running my own VNC.
    4. After I have also tried eclipse with the cdt plugin, I really began to like the source-browser and missed it in the studio.
    5. All in all I hoped that the newest Sunstudio got a netbeans update, because some of the plugins that exists only for newer netbeans-versions would also be useful for me and my team. But, at least the latest linux-preview is also based on netbeans 3.5. Maybee do you have plans to update netbeans within the studio?
Ok, that's all for now ;-)
Please don't understand me wrong, I really like some features of the studio, and it's a great improvement compared with the workshop version 6 that I used before. But, at all for me the studio is still not useable in all-day work.
    P.S.
At work I have only access to Sun studio version 9, at home I have also tried version 11, that is the reason why I mixed the version-numbers sometimes ;-)
    With kind regards,
    Maaz76

    1. The default editor isn't very usefull. For example, I missed
regular expression search (and replace) and the feature to
mark columns. Furthermore I really missed syntax highlightning
for some other file types like sql- and config files, or even the
feature to create my own. By the way, the predefined highlightning
for C-files is also a bit too simple. The current IDE we're working on is based on a current NetBeans
and has regular expression search (and replace). I'm pretty sure
NetBeans 5.0 (and presumably later versions) has syntax highlighting
for sql (its got an "SQL Editor" module which I'm guessing has the
    highlighing you're asking for).
We're also working on many new editor features not in current
Sun Studio IDEs. These are mostly parser based stuff like code
completion, code folding, and a class viewer.
    2. I think the external editor plugin is a bit buggy too, because
sometimes I have trash in files that I have edited before. But this
can also be my fault, because I use gvim and some editor macros
to do sccs-actions. I think the problems occur mainly if I use this
macros. In every case the external editor is not really an alternative
way for me.Its very difficult keeping sources in synch between netbeans and
an external editor. If you can give us a repeatable scenario for
failure we can take a look.
    2. In our team we are using teamware as version-control tool and
it does a really good job. So for Workshop 7 we have some editor
macros and the teamware-tools from version 6. In the studio I have
found the feature to create my own version control profiles, but this
is a hard way with many tries and errors. For example I have never
accomplished it to set further status information in the explorer
window, it's 'Local' all the time. We'll definately have sccs support in the next release. TeamWare
support depends on the status of TeamWare. Sun end-of-lifed it
4 years ago. As long as its EOL'ed, we won't support it. But if it
were officially brought back, we'd (most likely) support it.
    3. The studio needs very much memory, I think about 250 MB
or so. This is impressive, especially if all the 20 people in our team
would start sunstudio. I have found a hint somewhere in the docu
that the studio can work in a client-server mode over a VNC, but I
haven't tried it because I don't know what the admins would say if
I start running my own VNC.The VNC model shouldn't help on memory. How do you use the IDE
now? Do each of your 20 developers have Solars desktops? I'm
guessing they don't since you're talking about 20 users on one
system. The VNC approach runs all 20 IDEs (assuming all 20
developers are concurrently running the IDE) on the server machine.
So VNC won't help in that case.
On the other hand, if the 20 developers have Windows PCs on their
desktop then the next IDE should help substantially. We're working
on having the IDE run locally on your desktop, and do remote building
and debugging on your Solaris server. This puts most of the IDE
overhead on your desktop rather than the server. This should be
a much better model for multi-user development where Solaris
    developers don't have Solaris desktops.
    4. After I have also tried eclipse with the cdt plugin, I really began
to like the source-browser and missed it in the studio. We're planning on some browser capabilities. Some are in the
planning stages and others aren't even that far along. But we are
getting repeated inquiries about a source browser.
    5. All in all I hoped that the newest Sunstudio got a netbeans
update, because some of the plugins that exists only for newer
netbeans-versions would also be useful for me and my team. But,
at least the latest linux-preview is also based on netbeans 3.5.
Maybee do you have plans to update netbeans within the studio?Well, each major netbeans release has had so many internal
changes its been difficult keeping up. Our next release is planning
to be much more in synch with NetBeans releases. We're doing
current development on the NetBeans trunk (currently thats targeting
    the NetBeans 6.0 release).

  • Is there a way to programmatically configure Firefox to use Adobe Reader within the Firefox Browser?

We have customers who are having difficulty saving their PDF files upon opening them from our web page because most of the time, they have "Use Adobe Reader (default)" set under Tools->Options->Applications. This causes the PDF file to be loaded into a standalone version of Adobe Reader where the Save icon is disabled.
We can suggest to our users that they change this to "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)", which will give them the desired behavior of loading the PDF in a Firefox window with the Acrobat plug-in's Save icon enabled.
However, we'd like to pro-actively change this configuration for our users via javascript if at all possible, so they don't have to go through the trouble of contacting us with the issue.
    Is this possible?

I think that the built-in PDF Viewer only gets triggered with a specific MIME type (application/pdf) send by the server.
