Spaces and exposes in OS 10.8.4?

I can't seem to figure out how to set up spaces and exposes on this latest OS. Can anyone help?

It was really fast and efficient before.
Yes it was, now it's gimmicky and complicated.
Unwanted and badly implemented change for the sake of change, not that it actually improves anything.
I don't mind trying a new way of doing things, it's just the arbitrary way they force things on people, like we are stupid and need to be told what's best for us.
Let the cream rise to the top I say, let the best method win.

  • How do I turn Spaces and Expose off?

    Can anybody tell me how I can turn off Spaces and/or Expose? I find them intrusive and unnecessary to my style of using Mac and I'm getting a bit frustrated when it "swoops" into view every time I take a little pressure off my mouse.

    Spaces is easily turned off by going to System Preferences and clicking on the Exposè and Spaces section:
    Click on the Spaces tab and uncheck the box next to "Enable Spaces."
    Click on the Exposè tab and next to "All windows," "Application windows" and "Show Desktop," choose the dash "-" in each dropdown menu.

    It sounds like you might have some unusual settings selected in those preferences panes? The defaults for the Exposè features are function keys (e.g. F9, F10, F11, etc.), not anything involving pressure on your mouse.
    If you want to use Exposè but don't want it to be so easily invoked, choose options in those dropdown menus that aren't easily clicked by mistake.

  • Weird effect with my "spaces" and "expose"

    All of a sudden today, my expose started acting strangely. It's difficult to explain but here it goes:
    I have my spaces set up so that if I move the cursor to the lower left corner all open applications are displayed. But today for some reason, that is no longer working. Now only the application I am working in is open. Furthermore, the other ones are sort of "hidden" down below the dock. They aren't "in" the dock though.
    To get on of my other application windows to appear, I have to click on the icon for the application in the dock, ie the original application icon, not the application window. The application window is not in the dock, unless I minimize its window.
    But when I click on the application icon, the window will re-appear, re-open, and a little white square box with a hooked arrow appears briefly as the window re-opens.
    I hope this is making sense.

    Yes I messed with the preferences for fifteen minutes but I couldn't find anything that looked like what is happening on my computer. I'm using ox 10.5.8.
    It just started doing this out of nowhere, as far as I can tell. You know how you can have several opens open at once. Well I can't do that now. Only one at a time, and all the others disappear, they don't go to the dock, but to this hidden place. I can't access them unless I click on the original application icon in the dock.

  • Spaces in Expose on OS X Lion - feature removed/updated?

    Was the spaces feature updated/removed from Expose? I can't seem to get the multiple displays grid you get with spaces. It's all jumbled up in one big window looking very messy. Please help - many thanks!

    I also miss the grid layout of spaces.  In fact, I'm considering downgrading back to Snow Leopard just to get it back.  I used to use command+arrow keys to move around in my grid of spaces.  I used to use a hot corner to initiate spaces, then another hot corner to initiate expose while "zoomed out" in spaces.  I used to be able to click any window of any app in any space and move it to any other space.  I used to be able to move an entire space to another location.
    Now I've upgraded to Lion and I cannot do any of that.  Serious downgrade, serious loss of efficiency.  I've taken the time to learn how Lion handles all this.  I've taken the time to change options to try to make MC more efficient.  Simply put, it's a downgrade that breaks something great from Snow Leopard.
    For example:  Initiate Mission Control while on desktop 1 and I see a window on desktop 2 that I want on desktop 3.  In order to move that, I have to first switch to desktop 2, initiate MC, then move the app.  Not to mention, if that window were under another window, I'd not be able to see it at all!
    For example:  In SL, to go from space 1 to 9 on a 3x3 layout, I could use command+right, down, down, right.  On Lion, I have to use comand+right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right.  seriously?  Sure, I could use command+9 (if that's even where Lion decided it wanted to keep the app!), but I prefer the efficiency of using 1 hand to do the keyboard shortcut.
    Tell Apple you want the option of having spaces in a grid again.  Who knows, maybe if enough of us do, they'll bring it back: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

  • Spaces and Application Switcher

    My current workflow includes heavy usage of Expose, Spaces, and iOS's Application Switcher. I've installed a number of "helpful" apps in the last couple of days, and the behavior of the application switcher has strangely (and very frustratingly) changed. Now, whenever I command-tab to switch to another application, the application becomes active (evidenced by the application toolbar showing at the top of the screen), but the computer will no longer switch to the Space that has the active window for that application. The same behavior is exhibited when I click on an application icon on the dock - one click will make the application active, but a second click is required to actually switch to the Space with the active application window.
    I suspected that my recent installation of Keyboard Maestro was the culprit (since it apparently uses its own "Program Switcher" tool that has similar functionality), but I've uninstalled KM and the same problems still persist. I just need to figure out how to restore the original functionality of the application switcher, where it plays nicely with Spaces.
    Thanks!

    Turns out the solution is a simple little checkbox in the Expose & Spaces preference pane (under system preferences). Under the Spaces tab, there is a little checkbox at the very bottom that says "When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application." Silly that that little inconspicuous checkbox caused me so much grief over the last month... But there it is.
    Do I get credit for answering my own question?

  • Done something bad in Terminal, now my dock has vanished and Expose is dead

    I was doing some minor tweeking to the dock, as advised by page 30 of Mac OS X Super Hints from MacWorld. I did this as in the magazine:
    Add Spacers to the dock:
    One easy tweak that will make your Dock more orderly is adding
    spaces to separate your icons into groups. To add a space to the
    applications area of the Dock, launch Terminal and enter this:
    defaults write com.apple.dock
    persistent-apps -array-add '{tile-
    data={}; tile-type="spacer-tile";}'
    To add a spacer to the documents side of the Dock, enter:
    defaults write com.apple.dock
    persistent-others -array-add '{tile-
    data={}; tile-type="spacer-tile";}'
    To see the changes you’ve wrought, type *killall Dock*
    at the command line (see “Make Space on the Dock”). If you
    want to get rid of the space you’ve added, just drag it off the
    Dock and poof,it’s gone.
    Now my dock is gone and Expose is dead (boxes in Sys Pref > Expose are dead), I have restarted and still gone and not responing. How do I get back to where I was, forget this fooling about in Terminal....at least not without a return map.
    Leave well enough alone......MacWorld you are a seed of pain.
    Cheers, SZ
    more issues have come forth.....oh boy!

    Thanks Niel!! I deleted the file com.apple.dock.plist from the Library/Preferences/ folder as you advised.
    Can I get your cell number? I have a JavaScript/AJAX class all next week and this Terminal stuff-up does not look well for the week ahead.
    Cheers!
    PS: My dock has never looked so clean, I had sixty applications down there....now it looks like my wife's dock.

  • What is difference between table space and shchema

    what is difference between table space and shchema ?

    784633 wrote:
    so each user has it own space of tables - schema ?yes, but let's clarify a bit ....
    The "schema" is the collection of all objects owned by a particular user. So if user SCOTT creates two tables, EMP and DEPT, and a view EMP_RPT, and a procedure GET_MY_EMP, those objects (tables, views, procedures) collectively make up the SCOTT schema.
    Those objects will be physically stored in a tablespace.
    A tablespace is a named collection of data files. So tablespace USERS will be made up of one or more data files. A specific datafile can belong to one and only one tablespace. If a tablespace has more than one data file, oracle will manage those files as a collection invisible to the application - much like the OS or disk subsystem handles striping across multiple physical disks.
    A specific object in the SCOTT schema can exist in only one tablespace, but not all objects of the schema have to be in the same tablespace. Likewise a tablespace can contain objects from multiple schemas.
    and can one user to access tables of other users?As others have said - FRED can access tables belonging to SCOTT as long has SCOTT has granted that access to FRED.

  • PreparedStatement space and empty String

    Hi, I have this problem:
    PreparedStatement bookedQtyPS = null;
    String qry="SELECT * from djwsearch where djwitem=?;
    bookedQtyPS = conn.prepareStatement(qry);
    if(item.equals(""){ //item is an empty String
    bookedQtyPS.setString(1," "); // I set space instead of empty String
    }else{
    bookedQtyPS.setString(1,item);
    My problem is that I need to set space insteadOf empty String, but I think that I can not use PreparedStatement to do this. I have performance problems (my query is much more complicated than this one) so I choose PreparedStatement and not Statement.
    How can I do? Is this bug solved using PreparedStatement?
    Thanks.

    you can do it with the help of PreparedStatement.
    Here the type of field(djwitem) and setmethod is should be match..i mean if the type of ur field is String then you need to use the setSting method.
    you can do one thing specify one string variable.
    String space=" ";
    and now put this sapce variable at the second parameter of setString method.

    though I have sufficent memory space, and other internet based functions are running...

    Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
    Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
    least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
    Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    However, since it works with other networks that really suggests a problem with your network.

  • I recently deleted a partition on my mac that was intended to install windows. Now it is just blank space. I attempt to resize my Macintosh HD partition to cover entire hard drive space and hit apply but nothing happens (disk utility). Any ideas?

    I have a few problems...
    I wanted to make a partition to install windows, I tried to use bootcamp 5 where it wanted to partition and install windows at the same time. I do not have a cd of windows but instead had it on a flash drive. Bootcamp couldn't find it. Instead I was reading forums and found that there was another way to install windows by partioning your harddrive using the disk utility, downloading the bootcamp drivers, and installing rEFIt (an app that when starting the compouter a menu would come up to boot windows from the flashdrive). I try that and the windows install screen gets me to the point where I pick a partition. I attempt to pick the partitioned drive but a message comes up telling me that "this is of the GPT partition style" and windows cannot be installed on the drive.
    So now I went back to disk utility and deleted the partition but there is still blank space. I wanted to retry and install windows through bootcamp (somehow) but a message comes up that there cannot be any partitions or that a partition must be created using bootcamp. SO i keep trying to drag the partition over the blank space and hit apply but nothing happens.
    By the way I was trying to install windows 8 pro, some forums would say that you cant install win8 however I found others that said you could. How do I fix my partition and how do I use bootcamp to install windows (preferrably 8)?

    Csound1 What Ive been trying to explain is that I have been running bootcamp, I open the app where the first screen is the introduction, i hit continue, the first time I select "download the latest windows support software fromm Apple" then I return and instead select "Install Windows 7." Then hit continue. The third screen is where I "Create a Partition for Windows" I set Windows to 80 gigs then hit INSTALL. As stated before Bootcamp cannot find the install drivers saying "The installer disc could not be found." My windows software is on a USB drive not a disc, I tried using a virtual disc reader to make it appear that the windows software was running on a disc, still no luck. What I would like to know is how to install windows on bootcamp.

  • After upgrading to 8.1 Pro from 8.0 Pro, my Storage Spaces and Storage Pool are all gone.

    Under 8.0 I had three 4-terabyte drives set up as a Storage Pool in Storage Spaces.  I had five storage-space drives using this pool  I had
    been using them for months with no problems.  After upgrading to 8.1 ( which gave no errors ) the drives no longer exist.  Going into "Storage Spaces" in the control panel, I do not see my existing storage pool or storage drives. I'm prompted
    to create a new Pool and Storage Spaces.  If I click the "Create Pool" it does not list the three drives I used previously as available to add.
    Device Manager shows all three drives as present and OK.
    Disk Management shows Disks 0,1,2,6.  The gap in between 2 and 6 is where the 3,4,5 storage spaces drives were.
    Nothing helpful in the event log or the services.
    I've downloaded the ReclaiMe Storage Spaces recovery tool and it sees all of my logical drives with a "good" prognosis for recovery.  I've not gone down that road yet though because it requires separate physical drives to copy everything to
    and they want $299 for the privilege.
    Does anyone have any ideas?  I'm thinking of doing a fresh 8.1 install to another drive to see if it can see it or reinstalling 8.1 to the existing drive in the hope that it will just suddenly work.  Or possibly going back to 8.0.
    Thanks for your help!
    Steve

    Hi,
    “For parity spaces you must backup your data and delete the parity spaces. At this point, you may upgrade or perform a clean install of Windows 8. After the upgrade or clean installation is complete, you may recreate parity spaces and

  • Keep white spaces and carriage returns?

    I'm viewing a column -VARCHAR2(4000)- in a standard report column.
    The column value contains white spaces and carriage returns.
    I put "white-space:pre;" in CSS Style, but it still skips carriage returns...
    What can I do to view white spaces and carriage returns?
    I'm using apex 3.0 and IE 7.
    Saad.

    I'm using apex 3.0 and IE 7.There's your problem...
    IE6 (and, since there don't seem to be any docs saying anything different, presumably IE7) don't support white-space: pre in quirks mode. Don't ask me why - probably in one of MS efforts to "not break the web".
    All the APEX built-in templates are rendered in quirks mode as they don't supply complete DOCTYPEs. If you are using a standard APEX template or a custom template without a complete DOCTYPE declaration you are probably seeing this quirks behaviour.
    It looks like this will change in IE8.

It's very annoying as it takes up 6.54 GB of space and leaves me no room to add films, music...etc on to it. Please help me!!! I have already tried the numerous articles Apple have sent my way and I am still having no luck.I'd be eternally grateful if anyone could find a solution for me as this has been a problem for almost a year. Thank you.

    If they were put there via iTunes sync process, then simply untick the Music box before syncing again.

    i have a ipod touch and i got it for christmas with an iTunes card .the problem is that i downloaded videos and now it said that there is not enough space and i only downloaded 8 and now 5 don't download how do i erase them.can  get my money back

    Whatever you read about iTunes is wrong unless you're actually referring to feature movies, not videos. Videos, apps, music and iBooks you can re-download:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
    Download to your computer and then sync to your iPod touch whatever will fit.
    And no, I can't say with certainty that they won't give you a refund, but it's unlikely. The most probable outcome, if you do indeed mean movies, not TV shows or other videos, is that they would set up an additional download. For other content they'll probably just direct you to the same instructions on re-downloading I just posted.

    I downloaded a .zip file. It ate up my space and i cant find the file. How can i get this file off my phone?

    Not possible. Safari won't download and save a Zip file. You either had to use a 3rd party app, or as wjosten suggests, your phone is jailbroken. If the former, you'll need to use that app to find it. If the latter, you'll have to look elsewhere for assistance.
