Spinning ball on sign-in

My mac pro tower is sitting across the room, staring at me, with a spinning ball.  It's the sign-in screen, so clearly it's not hanging in an app.  Any suggestions on what I might do?
Lately it's been getting slower and slower and slower.  Now tonight, I decided to restart it (after being on for about two days).  I selected my name in the sign-on panel, and up came the beach ball.  Been this way for about 15 minutes now.
Suggestions??  THoughts on what could be causing it to slow down?  etc?
Thanks
Bruce

In general, there's no easy way to uninstall software without advance preparation. This is a major weakness of the Mac platform. Anything that came packaged as an installer should also have an uninstaller. Any application that prompts for an administrator password in order to install components outside itself should also provide some means of uninstalling those components. But if you don't know what files you've installed, you're dependent on the developer. You should never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it.
The worst thing you can do is to partially uninstall a complex system modification, leaving behind pieces that can no longer work but still get loaded. I see that all the time in these forums.

I have 3 mail accounts in apple mail. One of them has had the spinning ball going for several days and I cannot receive mail in this account or delete messages etc. For some  reason, I CAN send mail on Apple mail using this account, although it takes several minutes. I can receive mail in this account on my iPad and by signing into aol on safari and internet explorer on my office PC. It's obviously a glitch in Apple's Mail. I've deleted this account and reopened it in Mail on my Mac Pro with no difference. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, this E amil account is major to my business.

sounds like a corrupt database or index
the glitch is your home folder and mail folder, esp look at syncservices
I'd post in the mail or Lion forum where you will find similar issues being discussed.

  • I have a word document that keeps stalling with the spinning ball sign - how can I stop this?

Have a 2009 Macbook Air. Never given me any trouble before. But I am working on a long word document (docx) - 200 pages of text - and after 5 minutes of working on it it starts to stall and the spinning ball comes up every time I try to type or edit. I have tried resaving it as a doc. I have transferred it to my main IMac where the same problem occurs. No other word documents are doing this. This document is a novel, three years in the making, which is due to go off to publishers in a few weeks time so I am rather worried that it is going to be unrescuable. any suggestions?
I have a time machine and so on so it is all backed up, but i want to be able to work on it!
    Please help!?

    Try this.
Open the document and select and copy a few pages, say ten pages.
Open a new blank document and paste the pages you copied into that.
Save it with a new name.
Work on those new pages to see if the problem has disappeared.
If this helps, continue breaking up the large file in to smaller chunks and working on them
You can of course later reverse the process and merge the files into one new one.
This suggestion is based on my experiences with large Word files. Breaking it up in to smaller chunks does two things. First, if there is any corruption in the old file, the new copies might escape that. Second, the Mac is faster handling the smaller chunks.

  • Help --- Finder Spinning Ball of Death Mavericks not starting

get the spinning ball of death when I select finder from the desktop or select anything for that matter.
I have tried reinstalling Mavericks, after the install I get a popup asking me to install java, regardless of the option I select either not now or install the SPOD comes up.
I then go into safe mode and downloaded java and installed it, then rebooted normal mode, same problem SPOD when you select anything.
I have created another account and that works fine, but not my normal account. Initially I thought it might be something to do with chrome, so I uninstalled that.
In addition I have removed any startup items I had against the user ID in system preferences. I have also switched off spotlight trying to build indexes.
I know my system is ok when I get the adobe update icon on my top menu bar. The boot up process simply doesn’t get to that stage.
Below is the boot log. I would be really grateful for any suggestions. I have tried installing from the app store 3 times now.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault. Everything else is completely irrelevant.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

    Thank you for your help

I finally got it to work.
    My problem was Spotlight !!!!!!!!
I disabled a while ago Spotlight upon an advice that when you use Logic Pro on a professional basis like I do, it was better to turn off Spotlight. To do so I used Spotless.
I turn it back on and gone was my problem not being able to download anything from Mac App Store.
    Hope this work for others.

  • Spinning ball in iPhoto

    Hi,
I have a Late 2009 Imac, 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 GB of memory, Yosemite 10.10.1 and am using iPhoto 9.6 version.
Iphoto is slow to load, spinning ball misery, almost painful to use. I turned off iCloud because it seems to slow it down even more. I have about 90 gigs of photos. Any suggestions.
    Thank you

Is iPhoto the only application that is slow? Or are other applications also having problems?  How much free storage do you have?
Did the slowness start suddenly or gradually?  Can you remember what you did last, before the problem first occurred?
Slowness in iPhoto can be caused by several reasons: The most common reasons are
Lack of free storage. If your Hard Drive is filling up and you have less than 10 GB  left, free storage asap.
A corruption of your Photo library. Try to repair or rebuild the iPhoto library:   iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library
Currupted media files in your iPhoto Library. If the problem started after you imported new videos or photos, remove the last import from your iPhoto Library.
Storing the library on a network volume.
Instaling incompatible software, that modifies the system.
To find out, if the problem is caused by your iPhoto Library, test with a new iPhoto Library.  Is iPhoto more responsive, if you create a new library with a few test photos?
To check, if the problem is system wide, sign into a different user account and launch iPhoto using that account. Is iPhoto more responsive, if you work from a different user account?

  • Mail and the spinning ball

Since updating to 10.5.7 I keep getting the spinning ball on opening Mail. And also getting warning sign that syncserver is not connecting. tried trashing pref and repairing permissions but still getting the spinning ball. Anyone else getting the same problem?

I don't get the spinning ball, but I get the incoming mail symbol that spins and spins. I don't understand it as the settings are all the same on my computer and my husband's computer but he has had absoultely NO problems with his mail. My mail goes OUT and one or two pieces of mail come in, then it just spins and then my computer won't shut down unless I manually turn it off because mail has locked it up somehow. Other applications continue to work, but I can't do a force quit on mail...it just doesn't work. My husband put Thunderbird on my computer he was so frustrated with trying to fix the darn problem, but I hate Thunderbird!!! HELP

  • Making 2 hour Project whilst viewing spinning ball ?

I have moved 2 hours and 35 minutes of events into the project window from the Glyph 160GB EHD that is connected to MBP via FW800 cable. As I add increasing amounts of events to this project the spinning ball appears frequently and for longer periods. At this rate I will be at this first edit for another month since I have 4 more hours of events to go through. The EHD is not having a problem. The MBP is.
After one of these sessions when the MbP is put to sleep the MBP starts to recycle the start up sound ( awakening hard drive ) while the lid was closed and in sleep mode. Then this morning it would not start up from sleep mode. After disconnecting all cables including power it started up as if from shut down mode. Now it is charging it's battery.
Does this sort of paralysis due to user methods or iMovie software ? I have 2GB of RAM.
Perhaps there is a more appropriate program for me to create a 2 hour plus movie project in the project pane ?

To start up from the DVD drive, either hold down the "c" key during startup or hold down the option key to access the Startup Manager.
However, before you consider erasing the normal startup volume or reinstalling the OS, it would be wise to determine the cause of the "annoying clicking sound" you mentioned in your first post. Unfortunately, this sounds like it could be a sign of a mechanical problem with the hard drive.
To check for this, you can use Disk Utility, which you can access through the "Utilities" button in the installer window or menu when booted from the Snow Leopard DVD. Run the "Repair Disk" item on your startup disk. Alternately or additionally, eject the Snow Leopard DVD by holding down the eject button on the keyboard or the mouse button during start up, locate your original system disc, & follow the instructions printed on it to run the Apple Hardware Test.
Depending on the results of these tests (which you can post here), it may be necessary to reformat (not just erase) the hard drive or in the worst case, replace the hard disk with a new one.

  • Two spinning balls on start up?

Was running yash and lost power.  Tried to reboot and now, after I sign in using password, I get the spinning wheel next to my name in the log in screen AND the spinning beach ball..
I notice that during yash is running there is a small red - under the HD icon.
    Need some help here.

    Sorry..Yasu
    Running 10.8.1..
I am able to log into guest account..
I did what I think is all the trouble shooting..
Disconnect all wired peripherals reboot still problem.
Boot in safe mode same issue spinning beach balls
    Reset the NVRAM / PRAM
Disk Utility form my MT Lion boot stick . Ran Disk and Permissions repair still spinning balls.
I could reboot from my clone and or nuke and pave..I have a number of back ups from yesterday
But I think that there may be an issue with my admin user account, as it is not recognizing me.  I was thinking that if I log in as a guest open permissions reset to me then try the log in it might just work.
I think yasu locked me out when the power went out as it was not finished…

  • IMac seems slow and lots of spinning balls.

I have a 3 yr old iMac that has been acting very slow and gives me lots of spinning balls.  The HD is still 1/4 empty.
What is the best way to trouble shoot this problem?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|find tok|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Why does Pages 09 hang for 1min30sec? The spinning ball, etc...

I am using Pages 09 version 4.3 (not the iWork package, just Pages 09)
Operating system 10.8.3 with 4 Gb memory on an iMac from around 2009 (Intel core 2 duo)
I had been using Quark Xpress for a couple decades and wanted to save a book I did in Pages so I can sell it in the Apple bookstore.
So I saved a Quark document as a pdf.
Then I used an on-line service to convert the pdf to a word document.
Then I opened the word doc in Pages and saved it as a Pages file.
I am in the process of doing a lot of reformatting, but I'm not surprised all the formatting didn't carry over, considering all the flie formats I went through.
The document is about 40 pages and has perhaps 40 pictures, but I do resize them in Photoshop so the Pages document file is only 4.9 Mb.
Pages isn't all that different from Quark, it just seems to hide things in different places.
The problem is that every so often when I click in the document, I get the spinning ball and Pages hangs for 1 minute and 30 seconds (doesn't it seem odd that it is always for the same length of time?). Then it comes out of its coma and I carry on.
Using the Activity Monitor I see Pages using 99.8% or 100% or even 100.5% of CPU. And The Pages line is in red type that reads "Pages (Not Responding).
While I wait for Pages to come to its senses, I can surf the Web, or use other programs, which seems peculiar because if the CPU is 100% occupied, I would think it could.
When I go to the dock and click on the Pages icon, it doesn't come to the front. I have to move any other windows so I can see my Pages document and click on it to bring it to the front.
I went into FontBook and checked all my fonts and deleted a bunch. When I reopened the document, it said it was missing a font, so I selected a substitute, the document opened and I re-saved it with a new name.
Sometimes it hangs when I click in text, but just now it was hanging every time I tried to click on a line behind the main text box.
Just now it hung when I started to go to the Edit menu. I waited and now it's back, as if nothing happened.
    Any ideas?

After a very long night it seems my problems were solved by
    1. making sure all the in-line pictures had the correct wrap around settings and
    2. deleting some lines that had originally been underscores, but wound up being independent lines behind the main text box and
    3. checking my fonts in FontBook and deleting the iffy ones (I dunno if this made any real difference, but I mention it anyway).
Every time I would select a line there would be a long pause. Initially 1 1/2 minutes, but shorter as I deleted the lines one by one.
There were also pauses when trying to select in-line pictures, and sometimes for no good reason that i could discern.
Anyway, now that the pictures' wrap around is re-set, and the lines are delected, there are bo more pauses!
Whew. I spent hours watching that ball spin. Still, it was better than re-creating the whole book.

  • New MBP - endless spinning ball :(

I have had this MBP for about six months. It is a 1.83 Ghz Intel Core Duo, OS10.4.8. I had the spinning ball problem from the beginning, so I upgraded my memory to 1.5 GB. That has helped only slightly.
Lately I have been using it more professionally, more often - Photoshop CS2, pretty big files back and forth, scanning, managing files, etc. I am encountering the spinning ball constantly: navigating between files, changing file sizes, opening files, and especially working with the Bridge (I think the File Browser was better, at least performance wise).
I am really, really disppointed with this machine. It is not fast, it does not perform well, and most frustratingly, as I've stated, I get the hanging spinning ball all the time. It feels like the six year old PC laptop my wife finally got rid of, not a state-of-the-art Mac laptop.
I called Apple a few months back and they said the warranty was only for hardware, and I had to troubleshoot software issues on the Apple site.
I also bought this machine in the States, and brough it here to the UK. (I don't know if that effects my warranty).
I can't work professionally with this product, I thought Apple was better than this - I also have a G5 desktop machine which works pretty well.
    What should I do??

Christopher, as others have mentioned, your problems are due to running legacy PPC apps via Rosetta emulation. And these are substantial programs with big RAM and CPU appetites.
Rosetta effectively doubles their RAM demands and cuts their performance by about 50% due to emulating PPC instructions on the fly.
The spinning balls are due to page outs in the Virtual Memory system, which uses the Hard Drive to make up for too little real RAM.
The more legacy apps you are running in Rosetta, the more virtual memory is used -- and this affects the responsiveness of all applications, even Intel native or Universal ones.
The solutions are: 1) run fewer legacy PPC apps; 2) get more RAM; 3) make sure you have adequate free space (at least 10% free) on your hard drive to allow VM to work efficiently.
If you fire up Utilities > Activity Monitor you can see which PPC legacy apps are running. Try to get that down to none. Activity Monitor will also tell you how many page-outs are occuring in Virtual Memory. My guess is: alot!

  • I get a spinning ball every time I search in Itunes 11.0

I just installed Itunes 11.0 and whenever I start typing in the search box (the first letter doesnt even show up) I just get the spinning ball. It never stops and I have to force Itunes to quit.
I'm using a macbook pro operating snow leopard (10.6.8)  2.4 GHz intel core 2 Duo. (I upgraded to Lion when it first came out and itmade everything run really slow so I wiped the computer and reinstalled leopard from a backup!)
I should note that I store my itunes library on an external drive. But that has never been a problem before, and in fact all the songs play fine when I click on them or press play. It seems to only be the search box that is hanging with the spinning ball.

Upon further inspection, it appears the problem is this: when I start typing a word beginning with the letter "a", it doesnt wait for me to finish typing, but rather starts searching for ALL words containing an "a" in them. There are quite a lot. I have about 40,000 songs on my computer. So this simple search is almost crashing my computer.
I have found that results will begin showing ut only after about 5 minutes of spinning rainbow. Which makes the search feature completely impractical..
I consider this a serious bug in itunes 11.0. Or at least a very flawed feature.

  • I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months.  Initially, I did not have any problems.  Now I have a problem with Yahoo Mail.  I can open my account, but when I try to get at my mail, 2 out of 3 times I get the spinning ball that never stops.  Now what?

I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months without having any problems with it. Recently I am having trouble with my Yahoo Mail.  I can open it fine, but 2 out of 3 times when I try to actually open a message, the spinning ball comes on the screen and does not stop. Sometimes, I can log out or force quit and come back in to my account and use it.  Other times, I run into the same problem.  Any suggestions?

No, your Yahoo account is not in iCloud (which only handles iCloud mail), it is in Yahoo, and the Yahoo mail account is on your iPad.
But the MacBook Pro will have none of it! I write this question now as I fear that I will be totally demented very soon and unable to formulate my thoughts clearly!
Get the correct settings for your account from Yahoo and set it up manually.
By the way, I also find the "password" issue problematical. It seems Apple want my Apple password rather than my eMail password. All very confusing.
That would depend on what you are trying to do.
