Spinning beachball in Mail
I had this problem a few months ago, when I start up Mail, the beach ball spins for ages, after awhile it will come up with a box saying It may take a while to determine the problem. If you know that this is a temporary problem, click Quit and then open Mail again. This box has a Quit and a Quit and Rebuild Index button. I have tried both buttons and it does not do anything to fix the issue. The Quit and Rebuild Index button does not seem to do anything at all.
Last time this happened after several attempts to restart Mail, it had a button that said that it needed to rebuild the mailboxes. It took days for this message to appear.
I can NOT rebuild them using the Mailbox menu, the beach ball spins and Mail hangs and the rebuilding option is not an option.
The way it is Mail is totally worthless. It also causes Safari to lock up too when this happens.
What can I do to fix this?
Thanks for your help.
Hello Rob.
Try 1. Apple > Force Quit Mail. Then re-start Mail. I assume you have checked the current version of Mail that you have.
If it is not 4.5 then check software update for the current version.

Spinning beachball in Mountain Lion Mail - HELP !!
Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion
Mail is full screen and has a spinning beachball - I cant minimise the screen - I can swipe to bring up the desktop or anyother program, however whenever I go back to Mail I get the beachball.
So - I have done a 'Force Quit'
When I reopen Mail it defaults immediately to the full screen and then seconds later the spininng beachball starts.
I have done a full restart, Mail starts up the same way with the same problem.
I have held the power button in and done a PRAM reset - I still get it opening up the same way.
I've been to Disk Utility and done the verify and repair disk but the utility finds no problems, therfore nothing to repair. I'm running out of ideas!
Help!If arthur's suggestions don't work -
Quit the application.
Hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.mail
Move the folder to your desktop.
Open the application and test. If it works okay, make sure your mail is there, and then delete the folder from your desktop.
If the application is the same, return the folder to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible. -
Mail and the spinning Beachball!!!
Hello All,
ive noticed that my mail opens and almost immediately i get the spinning beachball and it will not access any new mail. I recently installed updates yesterday so my mac is up to date. Is there anything i can do?? Ive repaired the disk etc to no avail. Any help is greatly appreciated
Regards
StuHello Stu.
If you still have this problem, here are some things you may try in addition to verifying/repairing the disk, which you say you’ve already done.
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations, and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Try launching Mail under the following conditions (you may need to force quit it first if it’s running) and post back with your observations:
A. Holding the Shift (⇧) key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
B. With no Internet connection.
You may also try trashing the Mail cache:
1. (Force) Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Caches/.
3. Locate the Mail cache folder (not to be confused with the ~/Library/Mail folder where all your mail is stored) and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted after opening Mail and checking that all your mail is there, i.e. after making sure that you didn’t remove the ~/Library/Mail folder by mistake).
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library. -
When I try to open a file with TextEdit, I get the spinning beachball and the file takes almost a minute to open. When I just start TextEdit everything is fine. Also when I log on with another account TextEdit works like a charm, even when opening an existing file.
What I have done so far:
checked permissions in Disk Utility
validated all fonts
deleted all canon printer drivers
deleted all preferences
Nothing has helped. Mail shows the same behavior as TextEdit. What else can I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.drwx------ 2 admin staff - 68 29 Jan 12:16 Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook

Nothing but a spinning beachball!
Everything I attempt to do is met with a spinning beachball!
After running automatic software update for Aluminium Keyboard Update + Quicktime Compatibility Update and iTunes 7.4.2 in one session I'm met with the spinning beachball with every application I try to use.
The mac boots up OK, start up safari OK for instance click a link and it gets halfway and hangs, same as with mail - starts up then hangs - then if it happens with Finder.
Safe boot works OK, I've archived and installed off the disk and that seemed to work OK until I attempt to update to OS 10.4.10! That goes through the process OK, privileges are fine, disk repair came back positive. So now I'm well and truely stumped.
I had noticed that the Date and Time display in the menu bar tends to disappear! - Coincidence?
I've searched the forums has best I can but to no avail.
Anyone with any ideas?
Thanks!Except for the keyboard & mouse disconnect all devices from your computer.
Repair disk/permissions directly from your System Install Tiger DVD. See what turns up if anything.
Use Preferential Treatment which is a FREE utility that does all the work for you in checking for corrupted preferences.
*To check corrupted fonts:*
Check for duplicate fonts.
Applications>Font Book
Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
======================
Font book can examine your fonts for problems.
Applications>Font Book
Select your main main font library.
Then go to:
Edit>Validate Fonts
After selecting the above, any problematic/corrupted fonts will appear with a check mark, a yellow exclamation point or a red X icon.
Check the box for any font you want to remove and click Remove Checked.
TIP: Errors & warnings can be hard to find in the master list. Use the pull-down menu to find them. It's much easier this way anyways. -

2014 Mini, low usage, why spinning beachball?
I purchased a 2014 Mini for my wife as a email and internet computer. She does very little else with it, and it probably doesn't get 30 minutes of use a day. I am always surprised to have her complain about having the spinning beachball at the strangest times like simple browsing or Apple Mail. Its a basic config, but it seems to me that the basic hardware shouldn't be pressed very hard by the basic built in applications.
I did not upgrade to Yosemite because I thought the problem could get worse.
My question is: Is this common for a previous version Mini? If so why do people buy them if they lack the resources to perform basic functions. How can I tell what is causing the spinning beachball? Or better yet how can I eliminate it.
Thanks in advance,
MarkWhen you see the beachball cursor, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

Spinning Beachball FIXED in iTunes 7.7.1
Congratulations Apple, iPod Touch spinning beachball issue when connecting to iTunes 7.7.1 has now been fixed, no more waiting 2-3mins for iTunes to recognise the Touch.
I had a problem with my iPod Video 60GB being updated when I updated to iTunes 7 and it got worse (had to wait a very long time for it to update my iPod if it ever did) when I updated to iTunes 7.0.1.8. Then I was advised that iTunes shouldn't have installed with the 'old iPod updaters' still installed, but it did. So I uninstalled the 'old iPod updaters' via 'Add and Remove Programs' in control panel. When I rebooted iTunes said the iPod software was missing and instructed me to re-install iTunes. After the re-install everything runs great. Presently, I only have iTunes 7.0.1.8, Apple Software Update on my computer and version 1.2 on my iPod.

Spinning beachball of death won't go away, iTunes always crashing
I've been having problems with my MacBook since updating to iTunes 8.2.1 a couple of weeks ago. After updating iTunes would hang on the spinning beachball and crash constantly- the application was totally unusable. I removed iTunes, reinstalled it and rebuilt my library. After that iTunes worked most of the time, but occasionally would get hung up on the beachball.
Over the past couple of days it's gotten much worse. I'm unable to have both iTunes and Firefox (or iTunes and any other application) open at the same time- I get the spinning beachball and have to force quit everything. It usually takes several minutes for the force quit command to actually work. Today I downloaded a show from the iTunes store and iTunes crashed halfway through. I was able to re-open iTunes and get the show downloaded, but when I tried to open iTunes again several hours later I got a message saying something about how there was a problem and that my iTunes library has been renamed as damaged.
I removed and reinstalled iTunes again and now iTunes won't open at all. I don't know how to move forward at this point. I ran disk utility to check the permissions and there were a number of problems, but no matter how many times I click repair permissions they reappear. (Permissions differ on "System/Library/Components/AudioCodecs.component/Contents/CodeResources", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r-- .) It's the same permissions issue over and over. I don't know how to fix this.
Does anyone have suggestions on what steps I can take? Right now my computer is very frustrating to use because I'm not able to use more than one application at once, and I'm not sure if this is because of the problems I've been having with iTunes, or if it's something else altogether. Has anyone been able to successfully resolve their issues with iTunes? Here's a Crash Report for anyone that can interpret one.

Logic pro 9.1.8 won't load and I get spinning beachball of death
I have ML that is up to date and logic studio 9.1.8. When I try to run 9.1.8 (1700.67) (64-bit) I get to a splash screen that says "Searching for Audio Unit plug-ins (Apple:AUNetReceive).....and I have the spinning beachball of the death. I have to use force quit the app.
I have looked at a few threads and can't find my answer. Should I trash permissions or reload the app after I get rid of it using app cleaner?
OR is this a simple fix?
Thanks in advance.
I haven't tried to open it on my MBP, but I assume I will get the same result.Sorry to state the obvious (?) but you are not Updating/Upgrading.
You are DOWN grading if you are going from 9.1.8 to 9.0.2
If you want to downgrade, likely you will need to ERASE, and reinstall Logic.

I have a spinning wheel in Mail - stuck on trying to load a new message. I've force quit both Mail and my whole computer, but when I open mail again, it brings up the same new message - and the side bar curser is stuck in Drafts. What else can I try to cancel
Can you log on to the email account via webmail in a web browser, view the email and delete it from there if necessary.

My G4 keeps giving me a spinning beachball
I have a G4 tower running 10.4 something. I can't get in to see which 10.4 because everytime I do anything the spinning beachball kicks in. When it times out, the very next time I do anything it kicks in again. I am attempting to install the OS again, but for some reason my external DVD drive isn't showing on the desktop. I have tried ejecting the system disc several times and putting it back in again, but the computer won't recognize it. I attempted to restart from the external drive, and a file with a ? on it was on the screen rather than the regular icon.
Is there any other way to get the system re-installed, or is there something else I can do to get rid of the spinning beachball? I am using this computer as a back up to my laptop, and recently when my video card went bad on my laptop I discovered that my desktop G4 didn't work either. I hated being without a computer for any length of time and I need to get the G4 up and running as a true backup.
FYI, I also have a smallish extra internal drive that does not have a system on it. As I recall, I couldn't get them daisy-chained when I installed the extra internal drive. I just use it as backup for my data.
Any ideas, besides dumping this computer and getting another (I have NO money)!!
Thanks in advance,
Carole>Apparently there are quite a few issues with this "slave" srive. Could that be what is causing my apparently intermittant issues?
Indeed it can. Open Console in Applications>Utilities, any repeating errors?
>Any ideas on how to get it to boot from (or restart from) the iPod?
Is this a USB or Firewire iPod? G4s cannot normally boot OSX from USB, only FW.
>OOPS!! I marked the wrong one "Correct Answer"!!
I like getting points here, (only about 1 in a 100 do so at times), but I hate undeserved points!
>When I rebooted my G4 normally, it still didn't "see" the DVD external drive.
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-) -
I use Preview to edit photos, and would like to know if there are any updates to this program in the works. It seems Apple is constantly updating its software, except for Preview. I find it crashes all too often, and also takes forever to "catch up" with me (as in spinning beachball of death) when I'm editing a lrge amount of photos. Yes, I know I should be using Photoshop or somesuch, but it's just too **** confusing, and I don't have the time to figure it out. Thanks!!
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
Since upgrade to 10.5.8, frequent temporary hangs (spinning beachball)
Good day!
Since updating to 10.8.5 on my MacBook Pro (15" unibody design), I'm encountering frequent visits (every 5 to 10 minutes) by the spinning beachball which last for 30 seconds or so.
At first I thought something might be slurping up all the processor power, but Activity Monitor isn't showing anything. The one thing I haven't checked yet is whether it still happens if I'm not connected via AirPort. The incidents do not appear to be limited to apps using the Internet.
Any great ideas? Thanks!Been having the same issues happening on the same machine as you. I did this yesterday, and so far so good.
1. Restart in safe mode (Hold down shift key when you hear the chime)
2. Under Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilities, select your hard drive on the left column, and click "Repair Permissions"
3. Once done, restart
It's been a day since I've done this, and no beachballs yet (fingers crossed) -
Folks:
Last week I had an episode of multiple recurring "application not
responding" errors while trying to select and scroll down through a couple
hundred pages of text in a manuscript of approx. 1.8 MB in size in my word processor, Mellel. As I scrolled down about half way the spinning beachball started spinning and the scrolling process became slow, sluggish, and then unresponsive . . . . I force quit and repeated another 2x to no different response. Finally did "select all" to whole doc and then had to go in to the few pages that I had originally not wanted to select and change them to back to what I wanted . . . a little bit "bassakwards" but I got it done the old fashioned way. Now, when I attempt to "save edits" as I'm going thru my doc the beachball will spin for different periods of time. This is mostly an all text doc with just two (2) photos that have been "inserted" into the doc--seems like the photo's are smaller files than the original, and about 250 pp.
So, the question is is mr Mel (Mellel) trying to tell me something about my system; is this perchance a sign that Macinto II (the 2nd HD in the iBook) is coming close to its ultimate demise? A few years back I began having "issues" with mr Mel that eventually were shown to be signs of the end of Macinto I (named after the famous Seminole Indian chief who fought the US Army to a draw in the Everglades). I had just run the Apple Hardware test just a few days before this
recent episode all happened and it seemed to be OK. But it has been mentioned
here that mr Mel is "processor intensive" and could be just testing the limits
of my 2nd HD??? OR is the test over and all that is left is the funeral pyre for
Macinto II??
Would essentially a 2MB Mellel file be too large for my 933 MHz G4 iBook
with 640 MB DDR SDRAM running Mellel 2.2.7 (build b9) on 10.4.11 . . . to handle
even if it was totally in fighting condition?? Or is the probably 3 year old HD
being brought to expiration by having to deal with running the features that are
brought to the table by mr Mel??
Thanks for any thoughts,
eepWord processors typically load a large portion of a file into RAM for editing. When more of the document is needed it pages out the unneeded portion and reads more of the document into RAM. So in practice no document is too large. None of your "surmises" would seem to make sense.
A more likely scenario is disk corruption or file corruption assuming the hard drive isn't failing. Continued forced shutdown of the computer is a sure fire way to corrupt a hard drive if not cause it fatal damage.
I suggest reading the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
9. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
10. MimMac (Commercial)
11. CloneTool Hatchery (Shareware)
12. Clone X (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
