Split Monitor Woes

Hello all.
I've got a slight problem here.
I recently picked up a Wacom 20WSX Cintiq for my Mac Pro setup (which already has a 23" Cinema). Originally the Cintiq was to pair up with the Cinema, right beside each other, but this doesn't work as the Cintiq requires a large amount of space when being adjusted in rotation and tilt.
So I split the Cintiq off into it's own "workstation", apart from the Cinema with it's own bluetooth keyboard. Everything is fine and working.
Except for the fundamental fact that the OS X menu bar is still on the primary Cinema display.
Anything like Illustrator or Photoshop is pretty much rendered useless because of this. Sure, I can move the windows over to the Cintiq, but anything menu related requires me moving over to the Cinema, grabbing the mouse, and doing whatever it is I need to do.
I'm aware of the fact that I can move the Menu & Dock to the Cintiq, but this is a lame solution for a stupid problem, and it messes up the rest of my desktop(s).
Is there any way to truly run the monitors as a "split" setup? Ie, both monitors have a menu bar (the dock can stay on my Cinema though- don't need it on the Wacom), and each menu bar shows the contents of the foreground application for each monitor?
Seems to me like Apple's multi-monitor setup is pretty weak if this is indeed the situation and there is no apparent solution (at least XP has Ultramon).

  • New Monitor Woes

    Hey all
So we lost power this weekend and I had to haul my editing rig (a 1,1 Mac Pro, ATI 5770... yeah, it's a little long in the tooth but dang thing keeps on working!) out to a friends house so I could keep working. I figured it would be easier to just buy a new monitor (and I've been planning on doing that for awhile) than disassemble my old monitors and haul them.
So I found this guy on sale at Best Buy: Samsung - C750 Series 27" LED HD Monitor (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung---C750-Series-27%26%2334%3B-LED-HD-Monitor/8 585136.p?id=1218879338068&skuId=8585136)
    Basic details are thus:
    3000:1 contrast ratio
    300 cd/m² brightness
Displays up to 16.7 million colors
    1920 x 1080 resolution
Digital (2 HDMI) and standard analog VGA inputs
And I plugged it into my ATI Radeon HD 5770 using a DVI to HDMI cable and I mean, the thing is just stunning to behold. Bright and beautiful.
So here's why I'm here posting: It's at it's highest setting (full 1080) and I'm noticing that while most stuff looks really great text is not very smooth. I've exhaustively gone through the settings to see if I'm missing something but now that I'm back on my Macbook Pro here at work I can really see the difference (and it's not a Retina screen). I can take some screen shot comparisons when I get home. Granted this is how it was on my older monitors but I figured it was because they were several years old and had a lower resolution. Is it a graphics card thing? Can the ATI not render text as well as the NVIDIA in my  2009 MacBook Pro? I'm running Lion FWIW.
So am I missing something here? Anyone have any ideas? I have 15 days to take this thing back and while I could live with the less than perfect text I figure if I'm going to plunk down several hundred bucks for this I should make sure this is the best I can do. Anyone with ideas or thoughts, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

27" and you need dual link on DVI side or the MDP but realize that a true 27" is much higher resolution than your LCD HDMT "Monitor" Display was.I find the 23-24" inch is fine on HP but larger and I have to move my head and look around just that much more.

  • External Monitor Woes

I'm sure I had seen this issue posted earlier, but I can't seem to find it now.
On my upgrade to Leopard a few weeks back, everything went fine with the exception of my Boot Camp upgrade.
My external monitor is not recognized after the upgrade under Windows. (It worked like a champ under the Boot Camp beta version.)
I'm running an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600. When I first upgraded, I was on Windows XP. After hours on the phone with Apple customer support, we got the external working, but only with a sideways orientation. Apple CS was to further research, but I had no further contact from them. (We could find no option in the ATI control panel to change the orientation.)
In the meantime, I reloaded and updated drivers with no avail. I also upgraded to Vista Ultimate. And now, I can't even get the monitor to view at all. (Again, I reloaded updated drivers ... with nothing.)
I took my machine to the Genius Bar at my local Apple store with no luck. We could get an Apple monitor to work under Vista, but all non-Apple monitors that they tried could not get a signal. (BTW, the monitor works just fine in the Leopard environment.)
I've tried everything I can possibly think of given my pedestrian-level knowledge of my machine. Since I absolutely need my exernal monitor since I am an editor, I am at my wits end and the only option I can think of is to go out and buy an Apple monitor.
Anyone seen this problem or heard a solution?

Is this problem with Leopard or Vista?
If it's Vista I suggest the BootCamp forum where there are many more running Vista.

  • Powermac 6100/66 Monitor Woes

I need some serious help. Ok I got the HDI-45 to the standard apple 15 Pin connector then i got a dip switch Apple to VGA adapter. Well the vertical sync is fine at 60.0 HZ,but the horizontal sync is out of range of my monitor. My monitor supports from 31.7 KHZ to 70.0 KHZ Horizontal sync, but when i plug in all the adapters its out of range and says 24.5 KHZ /60.0 HZ . Ive tried all the switches on my dip switch adapter and all they do is change the vertical sync. Can anyone tell me a really good adapter i can use to see my old Macintosh on a VGA Monitor? Thanks

Is that the way it starts up, or is that the way it ends up after the Interlocking faces are drawn and the parade of Icons starts?
The way it starts up should depend on the value read from the adapter. The way it ends up when the system is in and running depends on the Monitor Preferences file, which could be set to an old value.
There are several ways to intervene to try to get different answers.
Reset The PRAM. This removes pre-conceived notions saved in Parameter RAM.
Boot from a CD. This avoids reading the (possibly wrong) setting in your Monitors Preference file on the Hard Drive. If the screen clears, it may give you the opportunity to find the Preference file (in the Preferences folder inside the Hard Drive's System Folder) and move it to another location, de-activating it. A new one will be created when you go back to the Hard drive System and use Monitors or Monitors and Sound to set the resolution anew.
One more thing to try--those tiny switches are not rugged. Sometimes they do not throw completely on the first try. Try turning them off again and moving them briskly into the ON position once again.

  • OSX hangs when booting + monitor woes

Firstly, the internal monitor on my MacBook Pro refused to turn on when the computer booted - chime sounded on boot and the computer responded to keyboard input. I managed to fix the monitor by using my iMac as an external display, then shutting down and yanking out the video cable - now the internal monitor works! I'm glad its working, but does anyone have any insight into what went wrong? It seems really strange and I wan't to avoid it hapening again.
Secondly, I now have another serious problem. OSX refuses to boot.
I've started the computer in verbose mode and this was the result:
    http://benanderson.homeip.net/uploads/phpG9ptPf.jpg
    ** /dev/rdisk02 (NO WRITE)
    ** Root file system
       Executing fsck_hfs (version diskdev_cads-540.1-34)
I verified the start up disk and its permissions from a Lion install DVD and it passed them with flying colours. I restarted the computer in Safe Mode, but even when booting in safe mode it hangs. Progress bar gets to about 1/3 of the way and then stops. http://benanderson.homeip.net/uploads/phpA7jg8J.jpg
I know fsck is file system check, but its been 10minutes and it hasn't budged from that spot. I'll leave it running for an hour or so (I know checking a disk can take a while if its a serious issue), but does anyone have any solutions that don't require me erasing the disk in the event the OS really has gone caput?
Lastly - what would have caused this? The last time I used the computer was the day before yesterday and there were no signs of error. I turned it on today and then all this happened. Fluke? Bad blocks? I'm just concerned because this computer is less than a year old - and to have something like this happen is quite worrisome.
    Thank You!

You will hang on "setting default..." if you are are trying to mount NFS filesystems in your /etc/vfstab and you cannot reach the server where these filesystems reside. You can "boot -s" and comment out these filesystems in your vfstab so you can boot or you can resolve why you can't reach the server where the filesystems reside. Metainit pertains to DiskSuite. You may have used DiskSuite to create metadevices.

  • Any way to split monitor in two?

splitview.com has a Windows only method for creating two side by side spaces for working in windows. doesn't have a mac os version. any ideas?

I just drag windows where I use them. I suppose an app that stuffs windows into little cubicles might free up 10 seconds of your life, but I can't say I'd want it. I constantly resize windows to provide the information I need relative to one another. If I'm referencing a document while editing another, I would adjust the sizes necessary for the task. Show just enough of the reference without hogging too much real estate.
I used something similar in Windows that was incredibly inefficient. You had to define your cubicles and when you tried to move a window to a more useful arrangement, it forced the window into a predefined cubicle. I think there was a modifier key that allowed free placement, but I couldn't get used to remembering to hold the key down.
There is probably an Applescript out there which will divvy up your window space between all open windows. You could probably have it list the all the apps and let you pick the ones to divide between.
In that vein, here are some links (check the app link in the MacOSXHints article comments):

  • Cannot remove file menu from split screen monitors.

Hello, I installed the latest update from Apple which was the new Safari 7. I run 2 added monitors with my iMac being the primary. After update installed, both of my split monitors have the file menu on the top of the monitors. I went into the system menu under display and everything is as it should be yet I cannot remove the file menu from my secondary monitors....

Thanks for the info however this still didnt solve the issue. I unselected and closed window but no changes were detected. I re opened the mission control and the box was selected again. I still have the file menues on both secondary monitiors. After i installed the latest update from apple, the one with the new safari update, is when i started having this issue. Everything worked fine before. My computer seems to be runing much slower now and when i click to open safri, it takes about 40 seconds to open safari..On both secondary monitiors, the file menues operate as if they are the main monitor, which my imac should be operating as the main....This is anoying...

  • Run full screen video with GarageBand

    Good evening.
I have a question about using GaraBand with full screen video.
I'm creating a movie using Final Cut Pro (which's new for me) and creating a music track in Garageband.
I will like to have GarageBand to play the music in one track, using an interface I will send a click to the drumer but also ( and this is part of my question), I need to have GaraBand to play the sync movie I created, on a video beam running in full screen.
The goal is to manage the application in my laptop but the people should not see the application or anything on my desktop, they should be able to see just the video after I hit play.
So, is there a way to have GarageBand to send a clik to the drummer mintor, play the sound track and do split monitor on a video beam that should show just the full screen movie and not my desktop?
I will really appreciate any suggestion about this.
Note: I have Logic Pro 8 too, in case logic supports it.

Thank you for taking a look into this question Chris.
This is the very first time I'm trying to do this type of presentations and I'm not sure if there is a way or another application to run a music track with a click only for monitoring of the drummer (which GB does) and at the same time run the video which was edited to by synchronized with the audio the musicians will play.
I can see the the movie preview window and make it larger, the problem is that it will not pay in full screen  move on a video beam.
I'm starting to feel that with GB it is not possible.

  • Problem with SAP Screen

Not sure if this is the correct forum.
Okies, a user of mine has a problem with her SAP screens. It seems that she can't view the full screen of CJ20N She has to drag the window bigger to be able to see the content. She uses this window in a split monitor view, i.e. some of the applications are displaying on the laptop window while other applications display on the monitor.
    Details of her SAPGUI:
    Release 640 Final
    File version: 6404.4.16.1015
    Build: 774474
    Patch Level : 16
Do note that her primary monitor (notebook) is always set to 1280x800 and the secondary monitor is set to 1024x768. Anyone encounter this problem before?

    Hi,
This is problem with windows screen resolution. Better to use, maximum supported window size and make sure to use same size for both the screens.

  • PowerShell processing of large CSV very slow - Is there a better way?

Using Powershell I am working through a foreach loop. One of the steps inside the loop is to find a match in a csv file -
    import-csv ".\RateCard.csv" | where-object{$($Item.'From Number') -match "^\+?($($_.Destination))\w*$"}
The foreach loop is processing around 100,000 records for a month time period and completes within a few minutes without the csv lookup. After adding the csv lookup I can see its taking about 5-10 seconds for each lookup. The csv file has 40,000 rows and about
    10 columns.
While I understand that client side processing is going to be slower, and that I should probably look at using SQL, I wondered if there is a faster way to do this. I thought of using a stream reader but couldn't work out how I could do a match lookup.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Two Screens

I use to use Director on a daily basis (1997). I'm long
removed from it so I'm sorry if this question is easy or has been
    answered before.
I'm looking to set my stage up to cover two 1024 x 768
    monitors (2024 x 768 stage size)
How do I get it set up to play back on the split
    monitors?

    Mark,
I have done a bunch of dual screen stuff, and if I make my
stage the size your are describing, and play it back full screen -
it usually just works. The only hiccup can be if the monitors are
not set up in the system right net to each other or at different
resolutions. Make sure the stage location is set at 0,0 and it will
line up with the left corner and span as far as the stage is wide.

How can I get my iMac screen to divide into sections? I'm using Maverick OS X 9.2. Thanks.

You cannot split a monitor up into sections in Mac OS X.
You can have separate monitor spaces or desktops that you can access using the Spaces or Mission Control functionality in OS X Mavericks.
You cannot split monitor views into seperate sections
There is no such way to do this in Mac OS X.
Do a search for an app called Cinch OR another app called A Better Snap Tool. Both of these apps are in the Mac App Store.
    These may work for you.

  • CS4-How do I remove a split screen in the Program monitor window?

I have Pro CS4 on a vista 64 OS. I am using the Mainstream encoders and my Program monitor window switches to a split screen every time I play the timeline. When I stop the playback, the screen returns to normal full screen with the last frame showing. When I start the playback again, the screen splits into two screens squishing the actual playback window to the left part of the monitor window. Any Ideas? Thanks.

I found the solution by changing my quality settings (in the top right hand corner of the program display window) from "Automatic Quality" to "Highest Quality".
I am not sure why it affects the display in this manner, but it just works this way and it is repeatable.
I am working with 50 Mb MXF files from a Sony PDW900 HD camera.I use the Mainstream codecs to inport the files. I am using a Nvidia Quadro CX as a video card with the latest drivers. I first thought that the Mainstream codecs were affecting the display somehow, but then again, I do not remember changing these display settings. Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate the response just the same...

  • Can I use split screens on and extra monitor I have. I can get mirror image on both screens, but not a split screen. The monitor is 1600 x 900.

Can I use split screens on an extra monitor I have? I can get a mirror image on both screens, but not a split screen. The monitor is 1600 x 900 AOC 20inch monitor. Hope I haven't wasted my money buying this £69 monitor. My 13" Macbook Pro is a little small for my ageing eyes. Thanks

In the display settings on your computer uncheck "mirrored". This will put the displays in "extended" mode. In extended mode you can set the external display to its native resolution as well as drag windows from your computer to the external monitor. I assume that is what you mean when you say "split screen".

  • Splitting Mini VGA signal between monitor and video projector??

    Hello there,
I'm trying to develop an inexpensive tech setup for a classroom/lecture environment involving a mac mini. However, since the mini has only 1 DVI/VGA port, I am wondering how possible it is to split the VGA output and send it to both a VGA monitor (so the teacher can see what they're doing) and a video projector (so the students can see it) simultaneously.
In other words, the same screen content is sent to both display sources.
Can anyone recommend a reliable solution? I've researched 3rd-party VGA splitters to some extent, but am looking for some actual 'on the ground' experience doing this successfully.
    Many thanks,
    Richard

Thank you for your suggestion. I will look in to this.
I should haven mentioned that the video projector is ceiling-mounted at the back of the room while the Mini and monitor are positioned at the front of the classroom, so I am also concerned about lengthy cable-runs.
    Thanks
