Splitting the Time Capsule USB port for 2 devices ??

So if i have and external HD plugged into tc usb port and I also need to plug in a netflix ready blue ray player to the same port- is there a splitter I can buy to do this or what other options do i have?
I have an extra airport extreme I am not using-could I run an ethernet cord to it and use that usb port for my second device without and problems?
Thx

First, yes it is possible to attach multiple devices to the TC's USB port. You will need a USB hub though. Some users have discovered that not all hubs are compatible with the TCs USB port. So you may need to shop around if the first one doesn't work.
However, the USB port on the TC is designed primarily to handle external HDs or printers. That is, it is designed to make them available to your local network, not to the internet. So I have doubts that the BR player will be able to have full interest access via the TCs USB port.

Hope this clarifies things a bit. Cheers!

  • Can I move my USB external to the Time Capsule USB port and still see my backup?

After much difficulty getting Time Machine backups to work on my new 13" MBPro, after updating to 10.7.2, I've finally prevailed with help of the great Pondini. (You are a great humanitarian sir!)
Of course I'd now like to put that new 3 TB seagate goflex onto the Time Capsule, share it with the wired in iMac, and WiFi around the house with the MBPro.
But now I'm afraid to connect it to the Time Capsule's USB, lest my backup be spotlitin' everybody's permissions from years ago and telling my Lion not to start, or stop, or go.
Truth is- after 3 days of sorting it out (in the end not really knowing how I did), I'm telling people to wait for 10.7.x to update
    (x = "when I tell you it's cool").
This is the first time in a while that I've been skittish about "recovering" from an update. 10.7.2 is a huge change that I wasn't ready for.
If I plug this drive into the TC and Time Machine goes crazy again I'll probably throw it out the window.
So has anyone made a TM backup with a big USB drive connnected to the MBPro port, and then moved said drive to the Time Capsule's USB port? And then still be able to access the backup through Time Machine?
    Hmmmmm?

I wanted to plug the wifi on the time capsule and send the wifi signal only from the time capsule and have it fully operating.
    Is it possible?
Not without ethernet connection to the 4G router.. you cannot use the 4G say into the USB of the TC.. there are no drivers for that. And you cannot do any other type of connection.. except ethernet.. so not with your current equipment..
Scrap the current 4g router and buy something with ethernet, that either takes the 4g modem or the sim having a built in modem.

Due to the kind of plug used the US power cord is rated at the 125v value.. and legally we cannot advise you to use on higher voltages.. although I have never had issues in Australia.. 240v.
But adapters from your Euro power plug to US are generally ugly .. unsightly things.. and often sit high above the socket and are none too stable.. I agree with Bob.. just go out and buy a standard figure 8 power cord.. check with Apple in Italy for a white one.. if you are going to have it on show.. black are far more common. Or even check ebay for a standard power Apple power cord as a number of items they sell use the figure8 socket.

  • Can I use the Time Capsule as a storage device for my Ipad?

I want to get an Ipad for my wife because all she does is surf the net, email, and photoshop pictures. Can I get an IPAD and a Time Capsule and use the Time Capsule as like a shared drive to push pictures from the Ipad to the Time Capsule?
I do not want to store the pictures on the Ipad

It is difficult unless you tell us what format the movies are in and what player you are using?
iTunes library will not really work. The TC is not a Media Player or Media related in any way at all.
But if you store movies in one of many different formats that are available and use a player on the ipad that can read and play those files, it can work.
So we cannot help you without info.. what source are the movies from? What format are they in? What player are you using?
    How flexible are you?
Can anyone recommend what I need
In the apple world with itunes you need a computer (Mac or Windows) running iTunes with a disk available to it big enough to hold your library. And some sort of router to connect the ipad and the computer in the network.
Apple intends you to use itunes in homeshare.

  • Backup HD connected to Time Capsule USB port

Hi guys. When I connect an external HD to the USB port of my Time Capsule, will that HD automatically be backed up to the Time Capsule by Time Machine? Bit of a noob question, sorry, but I can't find it covered anywhere.

  • Can the Time Capsule be used for scanner sharing?

I have successfully replaced my Linksys router with the Time Capsule and also hooked it to my USB HP 2200 all-in-1 printer. Works great except I can't get my wireless iMac or MacBook to see the HP all-in-1 as a scanner. The "network" printing works great via the TC.
Has anyone successfully integrated with a USB scanner yet?

I have this exact same problem, but only with a different printer/scanner (I even switched from a Linksys router). My printer is the Epson RX595, and as you stated, I can also print wirelessly to it from both my MacBook Pro and PC (connected wirelessly and via ethernet to the TC respectively). Now everywhere I've read is pretty much pointing to the "USB scanning not fully supported with TC", but I was wondering if Apple or Epson would have a solution for this in the future as I bought my printer not too long ago and don't want to have to upgrade just yet. I really want to keep it connected to my TC, since my PC doesn't have to stay on to act as a print server (previous setup).

  • I would like to back up my mac to a wireless hard drive, seperately on the same hard drive I'd like to store movies which i can access and play from other mac devices around the house on a wireless network. Will the time capsule do this for me?

    Wireless soulutions please?

Yes, just copy the movie to the TC.. if you mean run itunes from the TC you can do that too.. there are plenty of posts telling how.
But big BUTT.. no backup for data stored directly on the TC.. Time Machine is not going to back up the TC.. and as it only has one hard disk make sure it has a backup somewhere else.. otherwise one day you will discover your files are gone.

  • Is it possible to reserve a space on the time capsule to use to share files like; music, pictures, or documents?

There are 4 Mac's in my house and I'd like to back up all of them to a time capsule, i know it is possible to do this. however i would also like to be able to dump files like; music, pictures, and documents onto the time capsule so that the others mac will be able to access these files when they want to. This will stop the need for me leaving my mac on whilst other macs access my hard drive, or passing USB sticks around the house.

With an ordinary disk you can partition it with Disk Utility to reserve space for various things. With the Time Capsule you cannot partition it because Disk Utility doesn't work on networked drives and AirPort Utility can only format an entire Time Capsule, not paritition it.
You can simply store the files you want to share on the Time Capsule and turn on file sharing, and it will do what you want. The only downside is that because you can't reserve space, eventually the Time Machine backup(s) on it will reduce the amount of available space to zero. This would eventually happen anyway whether you store your files on there or not, and then Time Machine starts deleting the oldest backups, but if you store your files on there and space goes to zero people won't be able to add files.
I'm not sure about the "not powered" part. For many months I stored an iTunes library and music on a USB hard drive that was powered off the Time Capsule USB port. Of course, I did this so that the music would be accessible anywhere in the home. I swear that the external drive never used its own power cable. It was a portable bus-powered USB enclosure with a laptop-sized drive in it, though, so it normally does not require a power cable. If the files you need to share aren't too large, you might think about plugging in a USB stick drive which would be very compact, needs little power, inexpensive, and has no moving parts to break or heat up.

  • Can I connect my iTouch to the Time Capsule?

I am hoping to connect my iTouch to my Time Capsule, so the iTouch will sync with iTunes via the network.  Is this possible?  I have attached the iTouch to the Time Capsule USB port, but when I open iTunes, my iTouch does not appear.
I contacted Apple Support a few weeks ago about this.  The suprisingly unhelpful fellow said that it was not a Time Capsule issue and that if I wanted help, he could redirect me to the iTouch support contingent.  If he transferred me, though, he warned, I would have to pay a fee because my iTouch was more than 90 days old.
Honestly, I was miffed!  I would think Apple Support would help me connect other Apple peripherals to an Apple peripheral, for the Time Capsule is only 1 month old and eligible for free support.
    But enough ranting, any advice?

There are so many ideals in our worlds, aren't there?
Another question you could perhaps help me with.  I am using my TC as an external hard disk as well.  I will want to purchase another hard disk to back up the data on the TC.  A 500 GB disk will do.  Should I get one with an external power source?  Or a plug-and-play?
I tried to do this with an older hard disk drive, but the TC would not recognize it.  I was able to do a back-up by connecting the TC by ethernet cable to the computer and the hard drive by USB to the computer.  But I'd like to get a drive that the TC will recognize and use CCCloner to back up automatically my files on the TC to an external hard drive.  I would like to connect the hard disk directly to the TC via an ethernet port or the ideally-and-sensically-free USB port.
As a test, I just plugged a USB key into the TC, but the TC does not recognize it.  When I plug it into the MacBook, the MacBook does recognize it.  It is formatted as FAT32.  I am nervous about purchasing a disk that the TC won't recognize.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • Time Machine keeps asking for password to connect to the Time Capsule server

I just got my MPB back from having the logic board replaced.
Nothing was changed on my Mac OS 10.6.8, except that when my MPB went kaput I used a Windows OS PC and loaded the Air port Utility and did do a firmware upgrade to 7.6.1 for the Time Capsule(TC)
Now that I am trying to do a backup of my MPB I keep getting a message asking me to enter the password for the (TC) server so that Time Machine(TM) can connect to it. I typed in the disk password and the weird thing is that the disk icon flashed quickly showing the TM clock icon and the immediately went to the 3 people holding hands icon. When I waited or forced the backup it would come up with an error stating that my user name and password are incorrect.  The other weird thing is when I put in a wrong password it starts "connecting..." but then hangs causing Sys Prefs to stop responding. I either have to cancel the connection or force quit Sys Prefs.
    Steps already taken:
    - Deleted all the Keychain passwords for the TC
    - Reset the TC both by using the menu option and push button power cycle
    - I have tried using the "Time Capsule password" option for file sharing
It does the same thing with other external drives connected via the USB on the TC. However, that same external drive connected directly to the computer USB port works just fine and the icon stayed as the TM clock icon.
It just does not want to the connect to the TC drives!
I have read about the firmware being the problem, but how do I revert to the previous FW version for the TC?
This is going to be stupid not being able to use the TC drive to do the backups, but for the meantime I am using the external drive connected via USB 2.slow!
    Thanks in advance!

Ok. I got it to work, sort of....
As I mentioned before I tried the "disk password" and the "Time capsule Password" options to see if I can start the back up again or start a new backup. Neither worked. So I tried the firmware down grade, but like you said that did not work. I then decided to try the "Account password" option and I have never used this option before becasue it states that if there is data on the drive it would not be acessable after creating an account. Since I wiped out the disk that was nno problem. When I created the new account and choose the drive it asked for the user name and password. I entered the info for the new account I just created(FYI this has nothing to do with your login username and password), bingo! It worked!
Now I have two partitions on the TC disk. The old one and now the new account. I am guessing this is to be used if I have multiple computers, which I don't.
I any case, I am going to wipe out everything again and try again to do a backup the way I had it before.

  • Why Doesnt the Time Capsule show up my New Raid Setup External HD?

I purchased a new enclosure for a RAID 1 setup (2, 1TB hard drives) and plugged it into my MacBook PRO to use disk utility to set up. The setup was fine. I then plugged this unit into the Time Capsule UBS port and it shows up on the airport application (2, 923gb drives) but does NOT show up on the network - which is what I want it to do. I know the USB port on the TC works because I have a small portable hard drive, plug that in and it shows up. I then unplug it, plug in the RAID and it does not show up on the network but does show up on the airport application.
I hope someone can help me with this.
    Skip
PS: I have a second question about partitioning this RAID 1 set up but not sure if this is the correct place to pose that question. basically, I want to partition this RAID 1 into 3 partitions; one for Time Machine, one for superduper clone image, and one for misc. extra space. Perhaps you can guide me on where to post this question.

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • How do I use my time capsule as wifi for my xbox one?

How does one setup a time capsule to use as a home network to allow Xbox one usage as well?

set up the time capsule with an iOS device, a Mac or a PC, and then connect the Xbox to the time capsule like with any other router. however, for some Xbox features, you'll need to do specific setting changes. see this thread: Apparently I need to open several ports on my Airport Extreme to be able to chat on Xbox One.

  • Time Capsule remote access fails - Device not listed

I've been able to access my 4th generation time capsule hard disk remotely, but my router settings keep getting reset and I need help with my configuration.
Apparently, the router (xDSL Motorola 7647-47-20SC) is dropping my IP Passthrough settings for the time capsule even though it initially accepted them and remote access was verified.   Although I've added the time capsule as a new device using its MAC address, after a few minutes the device is no longer listed and my port forwarding and IP Passthrough settings are lost.
    Here's my setup:
xDSL modem configured in DHCP mode.  The DNS server is configured to be retrieved automatically.  The Time Capsule is directly connected to the router via an ethernet cable and has been added as a device using its MAC Address with the router configured to forward both TCP and UDP port 548 to the device.  IP Passthrough has also been enabled for the Time Capsule.
Using AirPort Utility the Time Capsule has been set to bridge mode with Back to My Mac enabled.  I tried to configure it in NAT and DHCP mode to enable disk sharing over WAN, but either lost my internet connection or got an error message that my internal DHCP addresses conflicted with the router's (even though they didn't).
I have a domain host name via dyndns.org which is updated with my public IP address.
The first time I set up the router and time capsule and entered the "Connect to Server" address afp://xxxx.dyndns.org:548 a pop-up window asked for my user name and password, after which I was able to see the hard disk remotely.  But when I tried again this morning there was no connection to the server.  So I checked my router settings again when I got home, and the Time Capsule device was no longer listed!  I can access the disk in Finder within my home LAN, so it must be identified somewhere, but my original IP Passthrough and port forwarding settings are no longer available since the time capsule has been dropped from the list of available devices.
Can anyone tell me how to restore this configuration and make it stick?  Thanks for your help!

Well, I just perused the Swisscom forums and apparently a firmware update initiated remotely a few weeks ago is causing problems with IP Passthrough functionality on the router.  Nothing we can do until a bug fix becomes available from out internet provider.

  • How does the time capsule work?

I am unfamiliar with this device. Can anyone explain how this works? I have a Gateway NV79, an IPad 2 and an IPhone. Will the time capsule work with these devices and a printer(Officejet Pro 8600)? If so, how does it do this? I am also wondering how it works as a router? Does it provide the internet access itself or do you have to have a separate source of internet to link to the device?

A Time Capsule is a wireless router and a hard drive in one package. It does not have a modem built in, so a modem and broadband service is required if you want to be able to connect to the Internet.
As a wireless router, the Time Capsule can provide connections for up to 50 users and 3 wired Ethernet devices. If you need more Ethernet connections, a switch can be easily added to the Time Capsule for that purpose.
Your printer could connect to the Time Capsule using either a wired Ethernet connection or wireless connection
Apple's literature does a good job of describing the product. Be sure to click the links in the upper right hand corner of the main page to learn more about the Backup capabilities, Wireless performance, and detailed Specifications.
