Sports Highlight Films

I am making football highlight films and was wondering if anyone has had success in placing some type of a highlight feature on a specific player on the field ? Examples are an arrow or circle or square on the featured player only for a brief moment to help coaches to locate the player of their interest.
Thank You

Not in the exported movie …
… as mentioned in the description. That's a 'flaw' of this work-around.
you can use any picture/illustration/symbol you like, as long it contains transparency and is saved as a .png
If you hesitate to invest 200$ in a more elaborated video-editor as FCPX, consider to purchase (40$) and teach yourself Motion5. you have to 'swap' videos (ex- and re-import clips), a lil' inconvenient, but you then have the perfect 'effects machine' for your videos, allowing automatic motion-tracking e.g. to stick a highlight/pointer to some running player, to paint animated graphics on the field etc etc etc.
steem learning curve but tons of fun

  • Sports highlight film

I have been asked to do a sports highlights film for someone.   I have a ton of game clips and photos.  So I want to transition between clips and pictures and put some information about the plays such as stats.  I also want to be able to accent the player that the clip is focusing on.  Maybe have a oval around him or something to make the focus be on him.  Then I want to add some background music. I have been messing with Premier and After Effects.  It seems I could use either one.  What is the best tool for this type of project?

What is the best tool for this type of project?
Both! While your setup sounds effects heavy, and you will use AE a lot, you wouldn't wanna build the rough timing in AE when in Premiere with its realtime support it would be more intuitive, especially when syncing to the sound, would you? Also, Premiere can do simple ovals/ vignettes. It has the leave Color and similar effects for highlights. It has a built-in color correction. It even has simple mask shapes. And of course it has a title tool, which isn't all too shabby, either. The point really is to work as efficiently as you can. You would only use AE, if you need something that you can't do in Premiere.

  • Adding arrows to Highlight film in imovie

I am creating a sports highlight film in i movie and need to be able to add arrows in certain clips. This will make it so that you can see which player is the one the viewer is supposed to be paying attention to. I just need to be able to put an arrow above a persons head for a short period of time. Thanks

    Hi Julie,
It should work if you have followed Karsten's instructions to the letter. The key for me was to ensure that Project Properties was set to Crop for Initial Photo Placement, before inserting the .png Picture in Picture image. Also, don't click on any of the image settings in the Preview window (Fit, Crop or Ken Burns) when sizing and positioning the PIP, as that may destroy the transparency.
Note that setting Initial Photo Placement to Ken Burns also works, but the PIP pointer will show movement (as in a normal Ken Burns photo). The black background only appears when Fit in Frame is selected in Project Properties - at least that was my experience. I'm not sure why you are seeing a white background - perhaps Karsten has some ideas.

  • Ipod does not play sport highlight videos very well.

When I try to view sport highlights from ESPN the video stops and the audio keeps going.  Can the performance be improved?

I have this problem as well. The 1.1 upgrade was supposed to fix this problem but it didn't. Hopefully Apple will address this issue.

  • HELP: Making Highlight Film

    Hi guys,
I'm putting together a football highlight film and I was wondering if someone could help me with an editing technique.
Ever watch Sportscenter and they will make the screen dark except highlight one player with a circle before the play starts? I'm trying to do that and have no idea how. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks again for the help.

    Video 1: Source Footage
Video 2: Black Video or Black Color Matte with opacity set as desired.
Video 3: Shape you want to use as the spot shadow - make it in the titler and fill it with pure white.
Apply the track matte key to the black video. Select Video 3 as the matte source. Reverse the key.
The choice matte luma or matte alpha is up to you depending on the look you want.

  • Premiere Pro CS3 Podcast #24: Creating a Sports Highlight Reel (part 1)

Thanks to all for your continued podcast suggestions. I plan to get to many of them. However, until then, here's a special 2-part sports edition in honor of the Superbowl.

b How to make ESPN-style slowmos and special effects in Premiere Pro CS3 using the Time Remapping Effect.
Part 1 deals mainly with Premiere Pro's built-in Time Remapping effect, use to create slow motion "slowmos" and freeze frames. Then check back for Part 2 next week, when Jeff demonstrates how to make some of the same visual effect techniques seen on ESPN SportsCenter to highlight specific players or plays.

Very helpful tutorial. When does Part 2 come out?
BTW, I'm in the middle of a sports highlight tape for college football coaches for my son. I'm a novice at the myriad effects offered by PPro, AE, Matrox, etc., but what I find absolutely essential are:
    1) A matte to highlight and draw the eye to the player at the start of every play. (I prefer to invert the opacity and darken the image except in the oval around the highlighted player.)
    2) Scale or "zoom" the image and Time remapping or "slo-mo", especially for replays of especially good highlights. I use Digital Anarchy's ReSizer 2.0 plug-in.
    3) Panning across high-res still photos for the "Ken Burns Effect". (I use ReSizer for that, too.)
    4) Audio processing to bring out the voice of the PA announcer when he calls your son's name. (I re-render all the audio clips using Soundbooth's Vocal Attack, regardless of whether there's audio that I want to use from that clip, to avoid dramatic level differences between audio clips.)
What I would really love to toy with, but don't know how, is how to "draw" the receiver's route on the field in advance of the play and highlight the football as it traverses a dashed line in flight from the QB to the receiver. Anyone have any ideas other than buying $100K worth of equipment?

Coachcom is the program, the avi files had no problem when I placed it in iMovie. I'm not understanding why I'm not able to watch the entire highlight. It is only allowing me to see one clip at a time.

  • Advice Needed - Sports Highlight Video - How to Combine Projects?

I am trying to create a Soccer Highlight Video of my daughter.  The purpose is to be able to showcase her skills in a video and hopefully generate interest from collegiate coaches.  I have recorded video of multiple games which are each about 80 minutes long.  I am guessing I average about roughly 2 minutes of submittable footage from each game.  Once the final video is complete, it will be posted on you tube and the link will be sent out to the appropriate college coaches.
I am currently working with each game separately as an individual project.  Once I have all the games editted, I would like to combine all of these individual game projects into one big project.  Once combined, I will then want to cut out a good portion of the game clips and just keep the really good stuff for the final product.
My biggest question is in regard to bringing each small project together for the final project.  Can I "publish" each project and then import the "published" product into Permier Elements 11?  Is there an easy method?
Any advice on how to easily do this would be very much appreciated.
(I am using Premier Elements 11 (trial version) and AVCHD video files taken with a standard video camera.  If I can get this figured out I will definitly be purchasing the software.)

The smartest way to work would be to set the Work Area Bar in each project so that you only output the segments of your videos you're going to use in your compilation. This will save you a lot of editing later as well as save you having to work with big, whopping files that you're only using short segments from.
The best way to do this depends on how you're going to publish your finished video. Is it going onto a DVD? BluRay? YouTube or other online site? Video for a portable device, like an iPad?
Each has its own best workflow.

  • Sports Highlight Video

I am a new Apple user. I would like to import video from DVD's of my daughter's basketball games, and edit clips into a highlight video. Is this possible to do if I purchase FCE? Thanks for the help.

    Hi -
    Yes, but . . . .
    1) Importing the material from DVDs will involve converting the footage to a FCE friendly format. The footage from the DVDs will not be editable directly, The file format will need to be transcoded to DV video to work in FCE.
    2) The learning curve for FCE may appear to be daunting, but there are good resources, including the well written FCE user manual to help. Do you have prior editing experience? You may want to get some additional help, either in online tutorials, or a book like "Final Cut Express 4 Editing Workshop" by Tom Wolsky/
    Hope this helps.

i want to make a football highlight video/movie for my son. Is it a way I can point him out from the rest of the football player by either placing an arrow over him or by making him glow in a still frame. Can anybody in the MAC world help me with this.

  • Highlighting moving person

I'm an amateur PE11 user making a sport highlight film from game clips. I'd like to find the easiest way to highlight a single player as they move. it doesn't have to be there throughout the entire clip, just as he enters the play or becomes interesting in it. There is a written tutorial in these discussions but it is for PE7 and quite arduous. I have 40 clips to add this feature to so I was hoping someone had a clever way in PE11 to do this. I tried a freeze frame but it throws the audio off and only works for those moments when the eye is already on the player. I need people to be able to locate the player on the screen. An opaque circle for about 100 frames would work nicely.
Any great ideas, or links to a solution?
    Thanks,
    Altuser100

    Hunt
First, Hunt, please excuse if I missed this point in your post or the references that you gave. The following should work in both versions of Premiere Elements which you have said you have, versions 4 and 11.
    altuser100
Since Hunt's Premiere Pro model does not address the specifics of your Premiere Elements 11 Windows situation, please let me offer the Premiere Elements 11 perspective on this with regard to establishing the circle for keyframing as per my post 3.
Instead of establishing the circle using two cicles one overlaying the other and Chroma Key, consider:
    1. Premiere Elements 11 Titler
    2. Styles...selecting a pre-made Style with the color of choice and which has stroking included in the pre-made style. I selected Caslon Red 84.
    3. Go to the Shapes section of the Titler and draw your circle from the Ellipse Tool.
    4. At that point you should see your shape in the Titler as a colored circle but with a solid color center.
    5. In Shapes section of the Titler, open the Color Picker and change "Gradient" choice to "Eliminate".
We could elaborate on user made styles and such, but for now I will leave it as above. But, if you had time, you might be interested in a blog post that I wrote about Premiere Elements 11 Creating Styles

    Overview

  • Question about old movies and getting the motion.

In the middle of bringing in old 16mm movies to FCE. There are times when it seems as if the movie, after it has been captured, is running a little slow when viewed in the viewer? However, one of the short movies had sound, and this was captured perfectly. If there is any difference, it is extremely subtle. The one time I it was perhaps more obvious, was when I watched as someone dove into the water. The splash, seemed to me to be someone off, but not by much.
Is this something that is known? ( As far as I can tell, presets are all correct, and the fact that the "sound" film captured correctly, which seems to be a professionally recorded sports highlight film of 1947, leads me to believe all is as it should be. ). Again, there are times when I feel the players running down the field as just a little out of sync from where they should be.
For completeness, using a canon HV30. The transfer was done by a professional outfit here in Seattle, with a stellar reputation. Presets for capture used are DV-NTSC either alone, or 32 kHz with the sound.
    Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Do you have an opinion as to whether this will cause a problem later as I add >music etc to the sequence.
It should be fine to do that.
Your Sequence will be either 32 or 48 kHz, the audio coming in needs to match or you have to render.
iTunes or QuickTime Pro can convert the audio to the required rate.
Now...all the captures done using DV-NTSC ( not basic)
The difference is to cater for different cameras rather than FCE Sequence setups.
An Easy Setup of _DV-NTSC 32 kHz_ acts the same as _DV-NTSV Firewire Basic_ as far as FCE is concerned, you just have two options for FCE to talk to your camera for capture purposes. If one does not work correctly the other problably will.
P.S. Maybe your new Canon can use the DV-NTSC Easy Setup correctly. I've been wondering why it's been taking them forever to bring it up to speed.
