Spotlight Trouble

Hi,
For about the last 10 days or so, I ve noticed that Spotlight is always reindexing my harddrive. It gives estimates of about 15-20 mins each time, but then it starts all over again. I ve tried:
1. Including my HD in the privacy list and then removing it to force spotlight to build a new index
2. Keeping the macbook ON for over 24 hours waiting for the indexing to complete
3. Rebooting the laptop multiple times in hope that spotlight would finally work
I ve a 500GB harddrive, of which about 200GB have been used up.
Any solutions to have spotlight back online?

I just found this thread, and am having a similar problem. I have just completed a complete reload of Snow Leopard. When I was starting to have trouble before my system went down, I noticed Spotlight was continuously indexing. Now I have reloaded, and it's still doing it (after two days with the computer running and nothing else open for the most part). I looked for the .plist file, and there isn't one. There are others for my other apps, but not for spotlight. Any suggestions?

-- those seem to be ridiculous errors for Spotlight -- if it can't figure out how to parse some of the info, it should ignore that info.
This continues until the disk cache gets totally overloaded, and the machine slows down.
    Only help is to reboot.
I have tried turning off spotlight indexing to delete the spotlight cache (and used Cocktail to delete the Spotlight index)
    That was no help.
Also rebuilt all of the mailboxes within the Mail program.
Then turned indexing off and back on.
    Still no help.
Just tried deleting a couple of old mailbox entries in ~/Library/Mail
There was an old Unix mailbox there from an early version of OS X, and another one that I could not identify, and should have been deleted long ago.
I know I can turn off the indexing for mail, but that is one area where I would like to keep it.
I haven't tried a reboot since the latest deletes, but seeing the same messages flowing in the logs does not give me much hope.
It may be possible that 1 or 2 bad emails are causing all the trouble, but I am at a loss to find them.
Have 18 different accounts that are active ( I do web work so have webmaster, and other accounts on a number of servers).
Those are a mix of IMAP and POP.
INBOX total is usually kept around 100 emails - almost never goes above 200 unless I am away for an extended time.
Most mail ends up in folders ON MY MAC.
Largest of those has about 1500 messages.
Do not have extra folders on the servers with any of the IMAP accounts.
It is about time I archive some of the older messages, and that may help, but it will take me a while to get to that, and then flush the messages.
Problem occurred after update to Lion.
Did not seem to have the problem with Snow Leopard
    Anyone have any other ideas?

I thought I had posted a follow up to this posting, but I guess not.
    Soooo, here it is.
The problem was not with Apple Mail.app as it seemed, but actually with Mailsmith.app.
I use it for a number of mail accounts that I want to handle separately from my other mail accounts.
Within that application there is a Spotlight helper/worker
    -- /Applications/Mailsmith.app/Contents/Library/Spotlight/MailsmithImporter.mdimporter/ --
That is what was causing the problem for me.
Some users remove that section from the application, or do as I did -
Set the folders for Mailsmith mail for privacy in Spotlight.
Note: also set any backups of the Mailsmith mail for privacy also.
I filed a bug report with Mailsmith, but it is still open.
There appear to be a lot of issues with their Spotlight helper through the various versions of OS and Mailsmith.
    see their discussion groups -
    https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!searchin/mailsmith-talk/spotlight$ 20indexing
The problem may be with certain emails, attachments, or addresses, don't know.
I am happy excluding that mail from Spotlight, and now my logs don't overflow and crash, the machine goes into deep sleep, and runs much cooler.

  • Where is the 'Find' feature?  It worked

I can't seem to find anything with Spotlight using Snow Leopard.  Since 1984 I have used the 'Find' feature with my Mac's and now nothing shows up when I use Spotlight.  Even though I can physically search for the item and find it exactly the way I searched for it but it will not show up.  What must I do?  Things just don't work like they used to.

    Try reindexing the drive.

  • Trouble with finder / spotlight ever since i installed lion.

Lion seems to have caused trouble with finder / spotlight ever since it was installed. Finder is struggling even with basic tasks (moving files)? This occures even when to other programmes are running. I have checked the VM for mds in activity monitor and this is constantly running at around 670MB, which is what I think is affecting finder. Is there any quick fix?

Disconnect all wired peripherals except the drive in question. The drive should be connected to a built-in USB port, not a hub, and it should have an external power source. Make sure the USB cable is securely seated at both ends. Boot in safe mode.
Test. Same problem? Connect it to a different built-in USB port. Same problem now? Try a different USB cable. Still the same?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode.)
If you have the same problem with the drive in all the above tests, then test it with another Mac, if possible.

  • Trouble with Spotlight in 10.8.2

    Spotlight is giving me grief.
    1) It is constantly indexing but necer gives a time at the bottom.
    2) I can launch applications correctly but for example I have contacts selected but when I put a contact I know I have into the search field, it does not display. Finally I entered my last name and none of my family appeared. Only my card and when I selected it I got gibberish. When I pressed Command on the card my name appeared in small type at the bottom but no other information was available from my card.
I added it and then removed it from the rpivacy tab in Spotlight preferences. It is indexing away with no indication of time.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Tommy

    Sorry about the continuous updates.
I booted from a clone and Spotlight worked like it should.
I ran Diskwarrior on my Hard Disk. Had to stop and restart because it seemed to have gotten stuck but it reported no errors. Rebooted from my hard disk and now it says it should take 23 hours to index my disk. The progress bar, which honestly I had never seen before, was all the way to the left, as if it was starting the job of indexing.
I'll get back tomorrow or the day after when this is over. Thanks for bearing with me.

  • Troubles with 10.6.8, spotlight, disk permissions

I upgraded my trusty 2007 macbook from 10.4.11 to 10.6.8 about a month ago. Upgrade went smoothly and I haven't had any problems in the month since then.
Sometime in the past day or two (noticed it yesterday), Spotlight has begun an eternal indexing project. I doesn't progress beyond "estimated indexing time." It seems to be causing some lag time in my computer's processing.
When I open Finder, the in-window Spotlight feature works just fine.
After reading some forums, I trashed the third-party importers located in HD/Library/Spotlight.
    No change.
I safe booted and didn't see the same Spotlight issue in safe mode.
Restarted as usual, and the same stuck indexing problem is still happening.
I decided to verify disk permissions and a whole list of permissions differ. Ran Repair disk permissions. Ran verify again, and again have a list of permissions differing. Ran repair again, then verify again. Same problem. Repair disk permissions doesn't seem to be addressing the issues that Verify is pulling up, even though it says it is.
There is one line in the log that is different from everything else. It says:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
The bulk of these permission issues look to be Systems/Library/Java and Systems/Library/CoreServices.
Are these problems related? Anyone have some reliable pointers for me?

Your disk permission repair issue is not related to Spotlight issues.

All I can recommend is run ALL of the free OnyX's checks, cleaning and maintainenance features (minus clearing the log files) and reboot. See after some time that it resolves your Spotlight issue (it takes a little while to rebuild it)

  • Lion upgrade: Spotlight query trouble

I upgraded to Lion this morning on my mid-2009 4Gb RAM MacBook Pro. Whenever I type something into Spotlight now, on the second keystroke it freezes, then all the icons to the left of spotlight disappear, blink and then return. I can't do a spotlight search :-(
I tried resetting the index with mdutil. It got rebuilt. I still have the problem.
I now notice I seem to be too late to write the Lion download to DVD. How can I reinstall cleanly now?

Thanks. Well it seems on the french app store it is currently impossible to re-download lion :-( Telephone support person said it should be soon possible. She advised me to reinstall by rebooting and hit [Command] [R] on startup. We'll see!

  • Hi, I am having trouble MacBook Air crashing since Yosemite upgrade. I ran an Etresoft check but I don't know what it means... my system runs slowly and crashes. I have to force shutdown. Sometimes screen is black for a split second b/w webmail pages

    Hello,
I am having trouble with my MacBook Air 13 inch June 2012 MacBook Air5, 2 4GB RAM  details below in Etresoft report. I recently upgraded to Yosemite and am having system trouble. My computer crashes and I have to force quit to restart. When using webmail there is a black screen for a split second between pages. This did not happen before. I am worried that it is not running properly and perhaps I need to revert to the previous operating system. I only have a MacBook Air and no need to share images between a tablet or phone so I did not need the new photo sharing software of Yosemite. I wonder if I don't have enough RAM to run it? I did not run time machine before I made the upgrade as I did not realise the significance of an upgrade as not very Mac literate. Any advice on whether my system is in danger... most appreciated! I am writing a book and making a back up but this machine is my lifeline and my work is conducted through it. It ran perfectly before... the Yosemite upgrade has perhaps highlighted some problems and it has unnerved me!
Thanks ever so much for your advice!
    Lillibet

When you have kernel panics, the pertinent information is in the panic report.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • Spotlight Indexing, Systemstats, Missing File, All After Mavericks Upgrade

    Dear Mac Support Communities,
The upgrade to OS X 10.9.4 has crippled my computer.
My main question is: should I reformat, or should I wait for a patch to come out to solve whatever is wrong with Mavericks? I explain below.
Spotlight is constantly indexing. The mdworker is all over the place on the Activity Monitor—4% and then it explodes to 85% of CPU usage. Systemstats kicks in randomly (connected to spotlight perhaps?) and eats up 90% of my CPU and 3gigs of RAM. Time Machine takes AGES to backup.
I have not been able to stop Spotlight's endless indexing. I have moved my hard drive and my Time Machine backup into the 'private' filter in 'Spotlight Preferences.' I have also tried the "sudo mdutil -a -i off" trick to stop indexing altogether. But Spotlight Indexing goes "off" and then automatically turns "on" in Terminal. Spotlight carries on, and the computer performance is choppy.
I've run disk repair. First, I repaired permissions. Then I verified and attempted to repair the the hard drive. There is a missing file apparently, and I therefore must reformat. This is very first issue I've ever had with the hard drive since I bought the computer. Considering how awful Mavericks has been—I have been reading other Support Communities posts—I'm nervous about something going wrong, or that all these problems will persist after the reformat.
All of this has occurred three days after my upgrade to to OS X 10.9.4. I have heard of numerous people having problems with Mavericks. All similar problems concerning missing files, haywire spotlight, systemstats devouring any remaining CPU power and memory space, and slow Time Machine back-ups.
Anyone with the same problems? Care to theorize some solutions?
    I have a late 2008, 15inch MacBook Pro., 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, running OS X 10.9.4 (13E28).
    Cheers! I appreciate the help.

Older Macs have more troubles under Mavericks. Considering the age of your Mac, it's not uncommon to start have hardware issues like drive failure.
To repair the drive you must boot from the Recovery Drive.
Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.
Run Repair Drive and Repair Permissions using Disk Utility in Recovery.***
Next Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs following directions here This will serve two purposes. It will reset YOUR permissions. Not the same as Disk Utility reset permissions and it will cause Spotlight to re-index your drive when restarting.
    Restart
Download and run the combo updater to refresh your OS X files.
OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo)

MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.9.3 to 10.9.4. If somehow the 10.9.3 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.9.3 and 10.9.4 it will still be stale after the delta update.
***If Disk Utility is unable to repair you will have to copy your data to an external drive first. Reformatting will erase the drive. You should have a backup regardless, if your data is important to you. Just like a seat belt and an air bag protect you in different ways when driving, you need both Time Machine and a clone for full protection. If you don't have an external drive for backup, I can give you some suggestions to get you started.
Both of these applications can be used to create a clone.

  • HAVING INSTALL TROUBLE?  Large list of suggestions/info/solutions in here.

This thread is about installing Leopard and includes information related to install only - not running Leopard after install.
It includes information about preparing to install, and some stories of successful installs using a variety of methods. Feel free to add your own story of success.
It also includes some workarounds/solutions to a few install problems I've seen.
    Here's my story:
I've been researching before I do my own leopard install on a dual 2.5 G5 10.3.9 system.
This forum is helpful, but it would be nice to see some solutions compiled into a single thread, so I've assembled a few things I found while poking around for a couple days. Nothing formal, and I have very little technical expertise - these are mostly copy/past from surfing and a couple insights I had during the research.
Everyone's computer rig is different. No single solution works for everyone, and its possible that all this info may prove useless to some, but at the least it is something to read/learn from until Apple puts together help articles.
There's very little analysis of what's wrong & who's to blame, just a bunch of stuff that might help when installing Leopard, so here you go:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5719301#5719301
*Here's my own distillation* (accurate or not) of some pointers/ideas/suggestions -- all found here -- that relate to overcoming "problems" related to installing Leopard.
    1. Do everything you can to prepare for install with any info you can find here or on the net (backing up, learning about & choosing install type, preparing install destination, checking hardware/software, etc etc)
    2. After putting in the install disc, allow DVD test - if it fails return the disc for another
    - installing with a disc that fails the test is a common theme in a number of threads here.
    3. Restart holding down the C button
    - forces a start from the DVD
    4. Burn a copy of DVD disc to standard thickness DVD -R
    - Some have reported certain DVD drives won't read it. Perhaps due to how thin it is.
    5. Try choosing to install just the base operating system, no fonts, no extra applications, no extra languages
    - someone posted the base system may be on layer one (most readable by all DVD drives) of the DVD install disc
    - layer 2 (some drives might not be able to read 2 layer dvd well) may contain everything outside of base OS install
    6. Remove all but stock apple ram
    - this is inconsistent solution, but has worked for many
    7. Install with another mac's dvd drive via firewire target mode (detailed below by someone else)
    - if your dvd drive won't read/result in a successful install, maybe another one will.
    - put dvd into another mac's dvd drive
    - restart that mac holding down the T key
    - connect it to your mac & launch the install disc on the firewire target mode mac
    8. Erase and zero the hard drive you're going to install to - if partitioning, be sure to format correctly for machine
    - users say it takes more time, but makes sure you have the disc formatted correctly & provides a better "environment" for the install
*A few person observations/opinions (accurate or not)*
    1. Keep it simple:
    - Installing to a apple ram only machine with a clean, zeroed, correctly formatted hard drive is the easiest thing for the Leopard installer to do.
    - Installing to the opposite environment (lots of non-apple software, interface hacks from 3rd party programs, ram that might have un-noticeable glitches, dirty DVD drives, hard drives that are over 60% full etc.....) makes it more challenging to achieve a successful Leopard install. Even with that, hundreds of thousands (2mill copies sold) have probably had successful Leopard installs with the "update" or the "archive & install" methods.
    2. Where do you want to spend your time?
    - After reading the time investment from users that have posted about botched installs -- Sometimes it takes a lot less time to backup, verify backup, erase, zero the disc, format, install Leopard, install all programs, install all program updates & transfer all user info and libraries -- and do that once, than to correct a botched install over & over & over.
    3. I've done both archive & install and erase & install. Do whatever works. From what I've read though, the Leopard DVD install disc appears to have some strict tests/parameters and if they aren't met it won't successfully install, so putting the odds in your favor might be a good idea.
*Now on to some successful install stories/methods/pointers:*
---------------backup, erase, zero disc, fresh install (remember to verify/test the backup)---------------------------
I just got Leopard and I backed up all of my data, erased the hard drive using Disk Utility with the zero all data option, I installed Leopard, installed all of my applications and copied my data back over without using the migrate manager. So far, I have not had one single problem with Leopard on my MacBook. Everything is running smoothly, So I highly recommend erasing your hard drive with Disk Utility using the zero all data option, installing Leopard, install your apps and check for updates for each application, and then copy your data from your backup. I have a close relative who is a Mac Genius for one of Apple's retail stores (for 6 years) and he says that everytime there is a new OS release, people have all kinds of problems because they did an Upgrade install rather than the process I described above. Yes, it's time consuming but it will save you a lot of trouble later. Apple should strongly recommend doing an erase and install rather than just upgrading. I think it would solve a lot of problems and prevent a lot of headaches.
-------------Erase & Install method vs upgrade method-------------------------
Have installed Leopard on both my computers. On the MacBook I did an erase and install and it has worked flawlessly. On the iMac I originally did an upgrad install that went pretty well, but I was having a number of minor issues like many of the posts here. After doing TimeMachine backups for two days I decided to do an erase and install on the iMac and then use the TimeMachine backup to only restore my data. Since doing the the erase and install on the iMac I couldn't be happier. The iMac is running like new and the TimeMachine backups restored flawlessly. Note: I manually restored the files from the TimeMachine backup on the external drive. Now TimeMachine is doing it's first backup on the "new" iMac and has recognized the old TimeMachine backup and is just adding to it. Of course the computer name and user names are identical to what they were before doing the erase and install.
-------------------Install via upgrade method (with good preparation)--------------------------------
For those of you who may be hesitant about installing Leopard on an older Mac this may be encouraging.
I installed Leopard onto a Rev B 12" PB (1GHz 768 MB RAM). Prior to installing I verified the Macintosh HD and did an extended hardware test from the PB install disc. I used the upgrade method to install Leopard as I did from Panther to Tiger on the PB and from Jaguar to Panther to Tiger on my G4 iMac. FileVault was enabled.
The install took 2 hours to the minute from clicking on Restart in Tiger to logged in to Leopard. 28 minutes of this was taken up by the install DVD verification process. You could skip this, but having read all the posts on these boards about defective DVDs I let it run. The install took a long time to calculate 'time remaining' and eventually gave this as 3 hours 52 minutes, although as I've said, it was less. There were periods of several minutes where nothing seemed to be happening - no hard drive or DVD drive activity - but I resisted the temptation to intervene. There were especially long pauses at 1:42 and 13 minutes to go. The 'about a minute' took 17 minutes during which time my fingers were twitching.
The restart after installation seemed vey long (as always) but there was no double-restart a la Tiger updates. I can confirm there is no longer a 'Loading Mac OSX' screen with progress bar. You go straight from blue screen to log-in window. All system prefs were as I'd had them in Tiger. Apps launched slowly while Spotlight was indexing but are back to normal now. All apps seem okay including Office:Mac 2004. Word took a long time building the font menu so I've probably got a horde of duplicates again.
-----------Installing from a DVD COPY of the install disc-----------------------
I copied the Leopard disk to a blank, double sided DVD. The copied DVD happily started, performed an archive and install without a glitch, and now I have Leopard up and running.
---------------Installing with firewire "target disc" method & how to use disc utility to aid install------------------------------------
ATTENTION EVERYONE- you can run disk utility without having a system installed. This should be your first step in trying to fix the problem!
Boot off of your Leopard or Tiger disk by holding down the "c" key at startup. When you are prompted with the install screen, instead of installing, go up to the menu bar and select the "utilities" menu, and scroll down to disk utility.
There are many different things you can try with disk utility. There are a few things you should try first before taking a dive and erasing your entire disk.
    1. If you click on your Hard disk or volume, at the bottom of the window a bunch of general information about your drive will pop up, such as size, format, etc. One of the last things told about your drive is its S.M.A.R.T. status. This is basically a protective measure for you, so you can check and see if your drive is doing alright physically. This isn't completely foolproof, as your drive could still have problems even if it isn't reporting it through the S.M.A.R.T. status. But if your drive is reported as failing, then you can be sure your hard drive needs to be changed. Otherwise, move to step two.
    2. By clicking on your Hard disk or volume, you can also repair permissions and repair disk. If you are having problems with your install or problems after the install has already been done (such as freezing on the blue startup screen), you will want to run both of these. If volume errors are reported back as unfixable, you may want to think of trying to salvage your files (if you don't backup) by purchasing an external firewire drive, installing a system on it and pulling your files from your internal hard disk onto the firewire drive. If all problems are corrected, then go ahead and try the install again.
    3. There is also a tab at the top of the disk utility window that says erase. Here, you can wipe your disk totally clean. Typically, you can't wipe your startup disk clean when you are booted off of the harddrive, because erasing requires that you unmount the disk, in which you can't unmount the startup disk, since the OS is running off of it. Only if you have multiple hard drives or a boot disk (such as leopard or tiger) can you erase your original startup disk. So if you have no further options or do not care about your existing data, go ahead and wipe the disk clean. Also make sure the disk is formatted in Mac OS extended (HFS+). From there, you can go ahead and try the installation.
Here's some more info on disk utility, and some other ways to check disks through single-user mode-
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Besides disk utility, there are some other ways of getting the install to work. One of the simplest ways is to use target disk mode. This is for those of you who have more than one mac, preferrably a desktop and a laptop (otherwise you'll have to move both desktops to the near vicinity of one another.). It requires you to hook the computers together using a firewire cable, and allows you to mount the harddrive of one computer onto another. This is a great tool for transferring large files, diagnostics, and bypassing installation problems. This would probably be a solution for anyone who installed Leopard on one computer in their house and got it to work, but couldn't get it to work on another computer (the OP). I've also heard that it bypasses the minimum requirements needed to install Leopard (min. 867 mhz processor). The procedure requires that (with both computers off) you first hook a firewire cable between the intended computers, by plugging one end into a firewire outlet of the first computer and the other end into a firewire outlet in the second computer. You then start up the computer that had Leopard successfully installed on it (or the one that didn't fail during installation). Once it is fully booted and at the desktop, hold the "t" key on the keyboard of the other computer (the one that failed the installation) and start it up. Continue holding "t" until you see a firewire symbol bouncing around on the screen. You should then see the drive mounted on the first computer as a firewire drive. You will be able to access everything on the harddrive as normal. You can forget about the computer with the firewire symbol bouncing around on it from this moment on. Now, put the Leopard install disk in the DVD drive, hold the "c" key and restart the computer. It will boot off of the install disk, as normal, but now you should have the option to select the disk of the other computer in target disk mode. Choose the disk and start the installation. Then cross your fingers!
More information on target disk mode here-
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
If none of these options work, then report back what happened after you tried each of them, and we can try to solve the problem on a case-by-case basis.
-------------Install to an external partitioned firewire disc---------------------------
I used my 1000 mhz APS partitioned G4 Cube to install 10.5 on an External APS partitioned Firewire Disk. (If you attempt to install from a GUID partitioned disk like the Intel MB Pro, it requires the External disk to also be GUID...). That installation was a simple "Install" procedure. No problems.
------------Install with 2 hard drives method, cloning & import from previous machine---------------
After reading much here and elsewhere I opted to do a clean install followed by an 'import from previous machine'
    1. Carbon Copy Clone your 10.4 disk; this will act as the backup you should be taking anyhow and the source for your import.
    2. Test your backup (you do test your backups on occasion right?) boot into your newly installed copy and look around, you should find everything works as it should, if not check your copy options and try again.
    3. Disconnect your backup/copy, insert your 10.5 media and do a clean install, configuring as you may (there is a good amount of space to save in printer drivers and alternate languages).
    4. After you've finished the install you will be given the option to import files from another mac or mounted volume, attach your backup, import it; select what you want, I wanted all files but you could choose to take this as an opportunity to clean up, 132 GB of data took about 2 hours to walk through on my MBP.
    5. I am running from this now and am quite happy.
    6. Keep your 10.4 backup copy for a couple of weeks just in case, create a new backup set with time machine?
    YMMV but enjoy.
-------------if your destination drive to install on doesn't show up right away-----------------
I have a fix for you. This was brought up in another thread, and I had the same problem. The solution is so ghetto, but it really works. Here is what you do:
When you get to the select a destination screen, go to the utilities menu and open up Disk Utility. You'll notice your hard drive is there, but it's missing the Mac OS X partition. This is the trick: wait about 10-15 minutes, and come back. Your partition will now be showing. Simply quit Disk Utility and return back to the installer. It should work from there.
--------------If having prob w/ dual layer disc---------------------------------------
I did a successful custom install by removing every single install package other than "base system". My prior attempts had always kept the Printer Driver package but removing the fonts, languages and X11 install packages. Removing the Printer Driver install package finally did the trick.
The Leopard install disk is dual-layer. My PowerBook G4 1Ghz Titanium has a single layer DVD drive. The basic Leopard OSX install package is on a DVD layer that is readable by older, non dual-layer drives; the other "accessory" Leopard install packages(i.e; printer drivers, X11, language) are on a DVD layer not accessible with older DVD drives. The Leopard install program incorrectly assumes everyone has a dual-layer DVD drive and subsequently "chokes" on the install when trying to install packages from the inaccessible DVD layer. This is how I ended up with repeated "EXCLAMATION!" ....."could not validate the contents of....." errors.
-----------1 users solution to exclamation mark on install problem-------------------------
I got a giant exclamation mark when installing on my iMac too. Turns out there was some trifling problem with my hard drive. Here's what I did to fix it:
    1. Boot from the Leopard DVD.
    2. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu once the installer starts.
    3. Click the drive you tried to install Leopard on.
    4. Click Repair Volume.
    5. Brew a nice hot cup of tea.
    6. If it finds anything wrong it will attempt to fix it and will display a message describing the problem.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and install as normal.
This wont necessarily work for everyone as there are many things that might cause the exclamation mark to appear.

I'm not really sure what method that person was talking about. I just read he had a successful install so I posted it.
    But I'll hazard a guess
    1. copy your entire drive to a backup drive
    2. boot into that drive and test it out - make sure its a flawless backup, it works, and the hard drive has no problems
    3. eject that drive, disconnect it and reboot into the leopard install dvd
    4. erase your main hard drive using disc utilities on the leopard install dvd -- you've made a backup, made sure that backup was good, and disconnected it so it's currently safely disconnected from the leopard install you're about to do. Also, on the hard drive you're erasing and installing leopard on to, many people recommend "Zeroing" it as well as erasing it. That option is part of the erase function in disc utilities on the leopard install disc.
    5. do a clean install of leopard
    6. follow step 4 from that original post exactly as that person described to do.
    7. read the rest of what they said
That's pretty much it. With the backup/erase/clean install/import/ you pretty much get everything you need exactly the way you want it with very few things missing -- and you've done this over a clean install. Plus that poster did mention that you can select what you want to import from your backup hard drive.
It sounds like its a "clean install" method that gives you control via "import from machine" option in the installer. Control over what parts of your "old mac" you want to import into your "new leopard mac".
Hopefully that helps. It sounds more involved, but its actually pretty quick and provides you with a perfectly save backup in case anything goes wrong with the leopard install.

  • QMASTER hints 4 usual trouble (QM NOT running/CLUSTEREd nodes/Networks etc

All, I just posted this with some hints & workaround with very common issues people have on this forum and keep asking concerning the use of APPLE QMASTER with FCP, SHAKE, COMPRESSOR and MOTION. I've had many over the last 2 years and see them coming up frequently.
Perhaps these symptoms are fixed in FCS2 at MAY 2007 (now). However if not here's some ROTS that i used for FCP to compressor via QMASTER cluster for example. NO special order but might help someone get around the stuff with QMASTER V2.3, FCP V5.1.4, compressor.app V2.3
I saw the latest QMASTER UI and usage at NAB2007 and it looked a little more solid with some "EASY SETUP" stuff. I hope it has been reworked underneath.. I guess I will know soon if it has.
For most FCP/COMPRESSOR, SHAKE. MOTION and COMPRESSOR:
    • provide access from ALL nodes to ALL the source and target objects (files) on their VOLUMES. Simply MOUNT those volumes through the APPLE file system (via NFS) using +k (cmd+k) or finder/go/connect to server. OR using an SSAFS such as XSAN™ where the file systems are all shared over FC not the network. YOu will notice the CPU's going very busy for a small while. THhis is the APPLE FILE SYSTEM task,,, I guess it's doing 'spotlight stuff". This goes away after a few minutes.
    • set the COMPRESSOR preferences for "CLUSTER OPTIONS" to "Never copy source to Cluster". This means that all nodes can access your source and target objects (files) over NFS (as above). Failure to to this means LENGTHY times to COPY material back an forth, in some cases undermining the pleasure gained from initially using clustering (reduced job times)
    • DONT mix the PHYSICAL or LOGICAL networks in your local cluster. I dont know why but I could never get this to work. Physical mean stick with eother ETHERNET or FIREWIRE or your other (airport etc whic will be generally way to slow and useless), Logical measn leepin all nodes on the SAME subnet. You can do this siply by setting theis up in the system preferences/QMASTER/advanced tab under "Use Network Interfaces". In my currnet QUAd I set this to use BUILT IN ETHERNET1 and in the MPBDC's I set this to their BUILTIN ETHERNET.
    • LOGICAL NETWORKS (Subnet): simply HARDCODE an IP address on the ETHERNET (for eample) for your cluster nodes andthe service controller. FOr eample 3.1.1.x .... it will all connect fine.
    • Physical Networks: As above (1) DONT MIX firewire (IPoFW) and Ethernet(IPoE). (2) if more than extra service node USE A HUB or SWITCH. I went and bought a 10 port GbE HUB for about $HK400 (€40) and it worked fine. I was NEVER able to get a stable system of QMASTER mixing FW and ETHERNET. (3) fwiw using IP of FW caused me a LOAD of DISK errors and timouts (I/O errors) on thosse DISKs that were FW400 (al gone now) but it showed this was not stable overall
    • for the cluster controller node MAKE SURE you set the CLUSTER STORAGE (system preferences/QMASTER/shared cluster storage) for the CLUSTER CONTROLLER NODE IS ON A SHARED volume (See above). This seems essential for SHAKE to work. (if not check the Qmaster errors in the console.app [see below] ). IF you have an SSAFS like XSAN™ then just add this cluster storage on a share file path. NOte that QMASTER does not permit the cluster storage to be on a NETWORK NODE for some reason. So in short just MOUNT the volume where the SHARED CLUSTER file is maintained for the CLUSTER controller.
    • FCP - avoid EXPORT to COMPRESSOR from the TIMELINE - it never seems to work properly (see later). Instead EXPORT FROM SEQUENCE in the BROWSER - consistent results
    • FCP - "media missing " messages on EXPORT to COMPRESSOR.. seems a defect in FCP 5.1 when you EXPORT using a sequence that is NOT in the "root" or primary trry in the FCP PROJECT BROWSER. Simply if you have browser/bin A contains(Bin B (contains Bin C (contains sequence X))) this will FAIL (wont work) for "EXPORT TO COMPRESSOR" if you use EXPORT to COMPRESSOR in a FCP browser PANE that is separately OPEN. To get around this, simply OPEN/EXPOSE the triangles/trees in the BROWSER PANE for the PROJECT and select the SEQUENCE you want and "EXPORT to COMPRESSOR" from there. This has been documented in a few places in this forum I think.
    • FCP -> COMPRESSOR -> .M2V (for DVDSP3): some things here. EXPORTING from an FCP SEQUENCE with CHAPTER MARKERS to an MPEG2 .M2V encoding USING A CLUSTER causes errors in the placement of the chapter makers when it is imported to DVDSP3. In fact CONSISTENTLY, ALL the chapter markers are all PLACED AT THE END of the TRACK in DVD SP# - somewhat useless. This seems to happen ALSO when the source is an FCP reference movie, although inconsistent. A simple work around if you have the machines is TRUN OF SEGMENTING in the COMPRESSOR ENCODER inspector. let each .M2V transcode run on the same service node. FOr the jobs at hand just set up a CLUSTER and controller for each machine and then SELECT the cluster (myclusterA, hisclusterb, herclusterc) for each transcode job.. anyway for me.. the time spent resolving all this I could have TRANSCODED all this on my QUAD and it would all have ben done by sooner! (LOL)
    • CONSOLE logs: IF QMASTER fails, I would suggest your fist port of diagnosis should be /Library/Logs/Qmaster in there you will see (on the controller node) compressor.log, jobcontroller.com.apple.qmaster.cluster.admin.log, and lots of others including service controller.com.apple.qmaster.executorX.log (for each cpu/core and node) andd qmasterca.log. All these are worth a look and for me helped me solve 90% of my qmaster errors and failures.
    • MOTION 3 - fwiw.. EXPORT USING COMPRESSOR to a CLUSTER seems to fail EVERY TIME.. seems MOTION is writing stuff out to a /var/spool/qmaster
TROUBLESHOOTING QMASTER: IF QMASTER seems buggered up (hosed), then follow these steps PRIOR to restarting you machines.
go read the TROUBLE SHOOTING in the published APPLE docs for COMPRESSOR, SHAKE and "SET UP FOR DISTRIBUTED PROCESSING" and serach these forums CAREFULLY.. the answer is usually there somewhere.
    ELSE THEN,, try these steps....
You'll feel that QMASTER is in trouble when you
    • see that the QMASTER ICON at the top of the screen says 'NO SERVICES" even though that node is started and
    • that the APPLE QMASTER ADMINSTRATOR is VERY SLOW after an 'APPLY" (like minutes with SPINNING BEACHBALL) or it WONT LET YOU DELETE a cluster or you see 'undefined' nodes in your cluster (meaning that one was shut down or had a network failure)..... all this means it's going to get worse and worse. SO DONT submit any more work to QAMSTER... best count you gains and follow this list next.
    (a) in COMPRESSOR.app / RESET BACKGROUND PROCESSES (its under the COMPRESSOR name list box) see if things get kick started but you will lose all the work that has been done up to that point for COMPRESSOR.app
    b) if no OK, then on EACH node in that cluster, STOP the QMASTER (system preferences/QMASTER/setup [set 0 minutes in the prompt and OK). Then when STOPPED, RESET the shared services my licking OPTION+CLICK on the "START" button to reveal the "RESET SERVICES". Then click "START" on each node to start the services. This has the actin of REMOVING or in the case where the CLUSTER CONTROLLER node is "RESET" f terminating the cluster that's under its control. IF so Simply go to APPLE QMASTER ADMINISTRATOR and REDFINE it. Go restart you cluster.
    c) if step (b) is no help, consult the QMASTER logs in /Library/Logs/Qmaster (using the cosole.app) for any FILE MISSING or FILE not found or FILE ERROR . Look carefully for the NODENAME (the machine_name.local) where the error may have occured. Sometimes it's very chatty. Others it is not. ALso look in the BATCH MONITOR OUTPUT for errors messages. Often these are NEVER written (or I cant find them) in the /var/logs... try and resolve any issues you can see (mostly VOLUME or FILE path issues from my experience)
    (d) if still no joy then - try removing all the 'dead' cluster files from /var/tmp/qmaster , /var/sppol/qmaster and also the file directory that you specified above for the controller to share the clustering. FOR shake issues, go do the same (note also where the shake shared cluster file path is - it can be also specified in the RENDER FILEOUT nodes prompt).
    e) if all this WONT help you, its time to get the BIG hammer out. Simply, STOP all nodes of not stopped. (if status/mode is "STOPPING" then it [QMASTER] is truly buggered). DISMOUNT the network volumes you had mounted. and RESTART ALL YOUR NODES. Tis has the affect of RESTARTING all the QMASTERD tasks. YEs sure you can go in and SUDO restart them but it is dodgy at best because they never seem to terminate cleanly (Kill -9 etc) or FORCE QUIT.... is what one ends up doing and then STILL having to restart.
    f) after restart perform steps from (B) again and it will be usually (but not always) right after that

    Warwick,
Thanks for joining the forum and for doing all this work and posting your results for our benefit.
As FCP2 arrives in our shop, we will try once again to make sense of it and to see if we can boost our efficiencies in rendering big projects and getting Compressor to embrace five or six idle Macs.
Nonetheless, I am still in "Major Disbelief Mode" that Apple has done so little to make this software actually useful.

  • Why is my mid-2010 macbook pro having trouble booting and crashing?

I have a mid-2010 13 inch macbook pro that has recently began to have severe problems. It started after I shut it down one night and woke up to the sound of my mac's fans running loudly and my computer running extremely hot. Apparently, it must not have finished shutting down that night and something went wrong with it when i closed the lid. Ever since then, the computer will either take a long time to boot up (the apple symbol will take up to a minute to appear, and then up to several more minutes to go to my desktop) or it will display an error (either the folder icon appears instead of the apple logo, or the apple logo appears and then after a minute or two is replaced by the circle slash). Once i'm in, the computer seems to function normally, but anytime it needs to access the disc there might be another delay, or the computer will freeze, forcing me to shut it down again. The most common time this occurs is when I am waking the mac from sleep. In addition, the cpu would run hot (~85) which would imply i was doing high cpu activity, except i was usually doing very little, activity monitor showed low levels with sudden intense spikes whenever i did something.
I've run several diagnostics to try and determine the problem, but none identified an error:
booting computer from different computer/startup disk - runs fine (apparently. gave my mac to someone else to try this test, could not see results for myself)
Thorough Apple hardware test: no problems found
disc utility: disc/discpermissions verified and repaired with no issue.
PRAM/VRAM reset: actually sped up the lagging of the system once it reached the desktop and intense cpu thing but booting problems still persisted.
archive and install: some of the time it would fail to install in the middle of the installation, forcing me to start again, but once i completed it, issue still persisted.
clean wipe of drive with restoration from time machine: computer speed better but still trouble when booting.
Clean wipe of drive without migration of data: computer running and booting quickly, but occasionally still received circle slash instead of apple logo.
At this point, i don't know where the source of the problem lies. The computer is old, but has never had an issue until recently. The problem is inconsistent, and all testing implies it doesn't exist, which makes its diagnosis extremely difficult. As it is a 2010 mac, it is clearly out of apple care and warranty so i cant go to a genius. I have a weak battery (80%) and my screen lid is a little loose from frequent use, but those are the only blatant problems i'm aware of with my mac.
Any suggestions? I can gladly provide more info as needed.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Spotlight or Find does not work with server

At work, anyone still using OS 10.3 can use find to find files on our server. Anyone using OS 10.4 in the office can't. When ever I search for something, it just spins forever while a coworker using 10.3 does the same search and if finds the file in a matter of seconds. Any thoughts on how to trouble shoot this problem?

    Hi Preston,
Make sure users logging into the server have the correct permissions to read the folder, .Spotlight-V100, at the root level of the volume hosting the data on the server. OS 10.3 handles searching differently than 10.4 (Spotlight).
    Best,
    Sean

  • Mac Pro having lots of lock up and crashing trouble

    Hi,
My early 2008 Mac Pro has been misbehaving for a while now in various ways. Now it is completely out of hand!
I was having some serious waking from sleep issues in the past and after performing a bunch of maintenance they got better (although they never disappeared completely). Now I am having a lot of trouble with the computer locking up. Usually within 10 minutes of waking from sleep, everything freezes. I can still move the mouse, and the computer will go into (and wake from) a monitor sleep but nothing on the screen is responsive.
Also, when waking from sleep, the screen goes blue for a few seconds before giving me the normal screen. Here is a copy of the console report from its most recent wake:

    Hi-
Looking through your log, I noticed the system is having problems with some M-Audio drivers.

Old drivers, outdated drivers and incompatible drivers can cause sleep problems.
If you are not using any M-audio devices, I would remove the files.
If you are, you should check for updates, and still should remove the offending files.
If you migrated your user files from a previous system, say from a PPC system, these can cause problems.
Start by running in safe mode, and see if the machine sleeps and wakes as it should.
