SQL Developer replacing Query Builder 6.0.7

Dear All,
We know SQL Developer 3.0 has a link to Query Builder from within it, but does it contain a similar structure as we saw in the old Query Builder 6.0.7 developed by Oracle long back?
The old Query Builder 6.0.7 could be used for editing and creating parameterised queries and generating formatted output, so just want to know if we can get the similar functionality using SQL Developer 3.0.
1. Whether SQL Developer 3.0 can create and edit queries by selecting data tables in Oracle?
2. Can it convert any old Query Builder queries (in .brw extension) to a format that can be run in SQL Developer 3.0?
I am about to download and install the SQL developer 3.0, but thought of asking here first and get some advice/views.
So, Please reply back with anything that might help me out.
With Regards,
Pamir

Yes thanks Jim...I realised that when I started to dig more into this.
Now I have downloaded and installed the software...currently am able to create, edit queries and do other stuff.
With Regards,
Pamir

  • SQL Developer replacement for Query Builder?

Our developers use query builder to quickly develop sql code w/conditions, joins, where clauses, etc. I just installed release 2 of SQL Developer and am trying to figure out if this is a viable replacement for query builder. Is there a graphical "query builder" component as part of SQL Developer?

Barry, I would agree that it should be clean and easy to use. I started using Data Browser 2.0 and migrated to Query Builder 6.0.7.1.0 and while Query Builder is no longer it's own product it's integrated into Reports Developer 10g. The basic layout and operation has been consistent thru the life cycle and I would think you'd keep the "look and feel" consistent with what's currently available. (might simplify integrating it too). My biggest complaint with Query Builder 6.0.7 (se don't use the 10g version) is that it errors when opening a schema with more than 8192 objects. As an E-Business Suite 11.5.10 customer this is an issue for our developers when logging in as the standard APPS user.
So here would be my "wish list"
    1. consistent look and feel with "older" versions of Browser/Query Builder
    2. removal of 8192 object limitation
    3. ability to open older .brw format files
Certainly more improvements would be possible by integrating with SQL Developer and would be welcomed - this wish list is coming from a user who has MANY .brw files in the older 6.0.7 format.

  • SQL Developer 4.0 Build MAIN-12.84 column width in data grid

A while ago I posted a thread about being unable to adjust the column width to "compress" everything on the screen to make the data more easily viewable.  I just installed the latest build, and while it works slightly better, it still does not seem that there is any way of making the query results take up the least possible space.  When you resize one column, it is affecting the size of other columns.  Also, having to resize the columns for every query would be a massive hassle.  Are there any plans to have an auto fit option that will fit to the least needed size that is necessary to display either the width of a heading and/or the data?  The lack of this ability is why I am forced to stick to an old version of SQL Developer.

yup, already fixed for EA3 - you'll see the grids size to the space required, not to fill the screen. Just like you see in version 3.2.

  • SQL Developer - cannot query collections

    Hi,
I have a problem with my SQL Developer that cannot query on objects with collections. I get the same error when trying to query these DB objects.
Error starting at line 1 in command:
    select * from customers
    Error report:
SQL Error: Fail to construct descriptor: Unable to resolve type "OE.CUST_ADDRESS_TYP"
However when I am using PL/SQL Developer I have no problem to access the objects.
I am using SQL Developer Version 2.1.1.64 with the letest jave SDK on windowns XP.
Please let mw know how to fix it.
    Thanks in advance.

I already posted my problem in the SQL Developer forum but I see that this forum is more active and many here probably use the SQL Developer so they might know the solution to my problem.

importing data using XLS file, the import wizard did not move to next step after selecting the required XLS file where as importing the same XLS data after converting into CSV format, it completes the process. although it is mentioned in the HELP that the DATAVIEW file be a XLS file but in the File Selection window XLS file type is not mentioned in the file type list.

another thing that i forget to mentioned that after selecting the required XLS file the Sheet(s) selector did not show the sheets to be selected unless you expand the wizard window.

  • Query Builder problem with saving to SQL text file

When developing an SQL statement in Query Builder and saving it for later use, one has the option of saving in .SQL file extension. However, this file can not be used by the data wizard of Oracle*Reports because it contains non-ascii text. It appears that the Query Builder saves commands as binary tokens rather than in ascii text.
This makes it impossible to use Query Builder in place of Oracle*Report's data wizard's query builder with which to build and save SQL statements.

as i posted earlier .. queryBuilder as a stand alone product is neither supported nor available anymore. it is only available as part of the report data wizard.
    thanks,

  • SQL Query Builder Error

    Hi,
I'm trying to build a data model based on data on our server. I've created a Data Set in SQL using the Query Builder, but when I go to save, I receive this error message:
    [Hyperion][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]Invalid object name 'CMPROJ.DBO.ISDT'.
Does this have anything to do with accessing my server? Any suggestions?
    Many Thanks.

Sorry but this has nothing to do with this thread - aimed for questions around Oracle Communications Data Model, the Enterprise Data Warehouse for Telcos available as DB option.
You might want to ask your question to the BIapps folks/Hyperion Thread. If still interested by "building" a data model for comms, you'd better save time and get something pre-built like OCDM...

    Axel.

  • Version 3.0.04: Query builder shows tables minimized

When we save a SQL statement, and then re-open that file, the view of the SQL from the Query Builder tab shows the tables as "rolled-up", such that, you can only see the table name and the selection box which allows you to pull in all columns from that table. If you drag the bottom edge of the table downward, it just creates an empty box.
You can copy & paste the SQL into a fresh editor window & keep working. So there's a workaround. Unless someone knows how to make the individual columns re-appear in the original Query Builder window?
    Thanks,
    --=Chuck

    Hi Chuck -
I'[m assuming the query(ies) in question are of the form "select *". The Query Builder relies on a connection to the database to get the meta data about fields for the tables. Opening the file, then choosing the appropriate database in the connection drop-down at the right, then switching to Query Builder will show the fields.
(Note that in the current version you must use that order [open, database, query Builder] (or after selecting database, go to worksheet & make a dummy edit [for example, erase/replace something] then switch back to Query Builder. This has been fixed for the next release.)

  • SQL Developer 3.2 - Connection reset

Hi, I've installed SQL Developer 3.2 build MAIN-09.30 under Windows 7 64 bit and Client 11g 64 bit.
Wherever server I try to connect, when I click on a table I have the connection reset and it tries to fetch data with no success, i.e. the Results display show with the gauge moving and nothing more, while in backgroup I have a message box that suggets to reset the connection. If I stop task and choose some other thing, such as data, I can see tha data inside the table. Getting back to Columns, I have to click on refresh button but I don't see anything.
More, I have the following errors:
SEVERE     51     2348     oracle.dbtools.db.DBUtil     Avvertenza. Eccezione non gestita: Errore di I/O: Size Data Unit (SDU) mismatch.

"Avvertenza. Eccezione non gestita: Errore di I/O" is italian for Warning: Unhandled exception: I/O Error
    Can U help me please???
    Thanks a lot

    Hi,
The case you describe is not familiar to me, but you may want to review this thread with a similar error:
java.sql.SQLRecoverableException Io exception Size Data Unit (SDU) mismatch
The comment there about a "recent JDBC driver upgrade to ojdbc6.jar" is interesting. I encountered a different error within the past couple weeks (can't recall exactly what), but noticed that the ojdbc6 jar files in 64-bit SQL Developer 3.2.09 and Instant Client's do not match. The SQL Developer jar is newer. Copying the one from the Instant Client (11.2.0.3) and replacing the SQL Developer version (supposedly 11.2.0.3 also) fixed whatever issue I faced. Comparing the manifest.mf files shows this:
    ojdbc6.jar from SQLDeveloper 3.2.09.23 64-bit -> Repository-Id: JAVAVM_11.2.0.3.0_LINUX.X64_110829
ojdbc6.jar from Instant Client 11.2.0.3   64-bit  -> Repository-Id: JAVAVM_11.2.0.4.0_LINUX_120621This is just my best guess at this point.
Let us know if this helps,

  • SQL Developer 3.2.09 and excess memory usage

This is really something that will ultimately end up as a bug-fix request, I'm thinking, but I was wondering if anyone else is seeing the same thing, before I report it.
We're using SQL Developer 3.2.09 in a Citrix environment, and we're finding that it's using up an inordinate amount of memory, causing performance problems for anyone else with applications open on the server. We haven't seen any patterns so far ... like if it's a side-effect of having the tool open for long periods of time (memory leak), or if certain activities within the tool are prone to using up too much memory.
Has anyone else experienced the same thing when running SQL Developer on their desktop, or in Citrix? And have you been able to tune it at all?
    Thanks,
    --=Chuck

SQL Developer is java based and relies on the jvm's memory management.
I'm not aware of any memory leaks as such, but memory tends not to be returned to the system.
Queries which return large return sets tend to use a lot of memory (SQL Developer has to build a java table containing all the results for display).
You can restrict the maximum memory allocated by modifying settings in in <sqldeveloper>\ide\bin\ide.conf
    The defaults are -
    AddVMOption -Xmx640M
    AddVMOption -Xms128M

most of time in my development, I just open sql developer now. but seems in this statuation, i have to use sql plus.As far as I know you still have to start the database from SQL*PLUS. If your schema has privileges you can get parameter values in SQL*Developer by querying V$PARAMETER (SET_CATALOG_ROLE privilege).
The two tools are not the same. Much of what you can do with SQL*PLUS you can do with SQL*Developer but I feel that SQL*PLUS still has better scripting abilities along with its bind variable storate. On the other hand the GUI interface of SQL*Developer Is fairly easy to use. The danger is editing procedures/functions/packages in the database forgetting to back them up from SQL*Developer first; SQL*PLUS forces me to use scripts.
Depending on what I am doing I use either SQL*PLUS or SQL*Developer (which I like better for queries with long select lists).
I'm having trouble getting DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE to work the way I expect in SQL*Developer; sometimes the output just does not appear without repeated executions of the generating program.

  • Accessing MySQL InnoDB tables via JDBC using Oracle SQL Developer

I had posted a problem in the Oracle SQL Developer forum with how that application (v1.1) accesses MySQL InnoDB tables and someone replied that the "[data migration] team created the integration with MySQL", so I am posting here in hopes of learning more about the problem.
    Here's a summary:
When I use Oracle SQL Developer to query MySQL InnoDB tables, I need to issue a "commit" before I do each query to ensure that I am getting current results. Otherwise, it appears to be using a snapshot as-of the last commit. Is this a problem with SQL Developer, or a JDBC configuration, or MySQL problem even?
    The full details are here:

  • Query Builder session settings as a solve to ORA-01843 (not a valid month)

Hi All! I'm novice at Oracle and RDBMS, so sorry for a dummy question.
I'm trying to make some queries to a tutorial database (10g XE) with Query Builder of Application Express 2.1000039.
I'm requesting columns with id, date of order and status of order; in a column of ordering date as a "where" condition I've wrote:
    >= to_date('23-JUN-2006', 'DD-MON-RRRR') and got an error "ORA-01843: not a valid month".
Then I've edited row filtering condition:
    >= to_date('23-JUN-2006', 'DD-MON-RRRR', 'NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE = american') and 've got a correct query result, BUT resulting table date format is DD-MM-RR.
So, here is a couple of questions:
    1. Can I change a session settings (e.g. alter session set NLS_DATE_FORMAT = 'DD-MON-RRRR') such way, to use it in Query Builder, before building an application itself and not to write 'NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE = american' every time I'm inserting data to a date datatype field?
    2. I wonder why resulting table date format is 'DD-MM-RRRR'. How can I get a data exactly in a date format 'DD-MON-RRRR', how I'm specifying in a query?
My operating system is Windows 7 Home Basic, NLS_DATE_FORMAT is DD-MON-YYYY in 2 cases in register and respectively in environment variable.
SQL*Plus displays all mentionted query tables correctly, corresponding to an 'ALTER SESSION ..... SETTINGS'.
Hope to your help, guys. Thanks for answers!

    Hi,
you can run the following query so you will see the session parameter values, and any differences with database and instance values :
    SELECT
      a1.parameter as "Parameter",
      a1.value as "Database value",
      a2.value as "Instance value",
      a3.value as "Session value"
    FROM
      nls_database_parameters a1
      LEFT JOIN nls_instance_parameters a2 ON a1.parameter = a2.parameter
      LEFT JOIN nls_session_parameters a3 ON a1.parameter = a3.parameter
    ORDER BY
      a1.parameter ASC;What are the values for NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE and NLS_DATE_FORMAT ?
    1. Can I change a session settings such way, to use it in Query Builder, before building an application itself and not to write 'NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE = american' every time I'm inserting data to a date datatype field? In the application, It depends on the Application Primary Language and Application Date Format you have set in the application globalization attributes. But you can also alter the session every time the APEX engine connects to the database, by entering some PL/SQL code in the Initialization PL/SQL Code attribute of the application (Application Builder -> Application -> Edit Security Attributes) :
    BEGIN
       EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'ALTER SESSION SET NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE = ''AMERICAN'' ';
END;In all cases application level settings will only affect the application, not SQL Commands and Query Builder. I think you have to alter session manually each time for these two last tools :/

  • SQL developer 3.0 - Few Query Builder issues

    Hi All,
I have just started using SQL Developer 3.0 so have not fully browsed thru all of the available options in SQL Developer. I have been trying to work on creating and editing sql statements using Worksheet and Query Builder.
I am working on to test this tool so I can give it to the users for them to try and use it - they used to work on the old Query Builder 6.0.7....since it is already de-supported long back to work against 11g database, I am hoping to tell them to use SQL developer 3.0 instead.
Hence, if an user doesn't know how to write a sql statement, he/she would try to do the same using Query Builder.
So, the following questions are more aligned towards a normal user who would try to create a query in the Query Builder window, instead of directly typing a sql statement in the Worksheet window.
    1) How to establish/create a relationship between tables after you have dragged down the tables into the Query Builder window? - i tried but couldn't get any options!.
    2) Sometimes I see 'Connection closed' error when i try to run a query. How to refresh the connection without opening a new Connection tab?
    - I tried this but evertytime it opens up a new connection tab, while the old tab is still present.
    3) Columns in the Expression field in Query Builder window can ONLY be displayed in the result set, if the 'output' box on the extreme left of the 2nd section in Query Builder window is checked.
Now when i try to check the output box for an expression (with few aggregate functions), the 'Grouping' check box automatically gets checked, which when run throws an ORA-00934 error: group function is not allowed here...but when I de-select the 'Grouping' check box, the 'output' box also gets un-checked!.
    How to solve this out?
Please let me know the resolutions of the above - much appreciated.
    With Regards,
    Pamir

As Raghu noted above, and you also saw in rp0428's following reply,
Re: Problem with displaying sdo_geometry objects
drilling down to the cell edit details is your only recourse for now. Apparently there will be further work done in this area, but it is not clear exactly what or when it will be. For those with access to it, here is a bug reference:
