SQL Report (Updateable - MRU) Limitation - ORA-06502

Hi,
I am using ApEx v3.0.1.00.07 and was wondering if there is a limitation on a MRU based on a Master-Detail relationship?
My underlying table (let's call is Table B) has approx 30 columns (not all used) and just over 700 rows of data and growing.
Lately, when my users select a application from a master table (Table A), to retrieve detail records from Table B, which is a SQL Updateable Report and based on selection from Table A, only two records will be returned from Table B, but instead, they receive the error:
report error:
ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
I find that when I turn off columns, within the report attributes, this tends to correct the issue until again, the same error occurs.
Would really appreciate some assistance with correcting this problem as Table B data rows will be increasing on a regular basis.
Thanks.
Tony.

The limits have to do with report rows not being able to exceed 32K. Too many columns will produce too much HTML per row. You also have a "number of rows" limit because of the total number of arguments passed to modplsql as indicated by an Apache error log entry like:
mod_plsql: /pls/htmldb/wwv_flow.accept HTTP-400 Too many arguments passed in. Got 23549 parameters. Upper limit is 2000
Then there's the debate about whether updateable reports, especially large ones, are a good design choice for web applications. They have a lot going against them.

  • Many report columns (70+) and ORA-06502 (Small char buffer)

    Hello!
    I have a big problem with my few tables and Oracle APEX. I have 2 big tables with 75 and 108 columns and If i try to translate a column headings in report (tabular form) that appear a ORA-06502 Error (Small char buffer). If i don't change column order and headings that all ok.
    I thought that it beacuse of incorrect columns datatype but if i set column heading in report to "None" or if i set to null part of column heading (30-40%) that all be ok with report.
    This problem not appear with other more small tables

  • Sql Query (updateable Report) returning ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value

    Hi I have a Sql Query Report Region as defined below. On the report attributes I am not using any "Row Selector". In a After submit process I try to print out the results of the value I have entered in as a value in updatable report and i get the error: I am doing this as a test before i use the data to insert into another table...
    I receive this error if I enter in a characters (not numeric) into the "Field Value" field.:
    ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character to number conversion error.
    If I enter in a numeric into the "Field Value" text box, then I get the value displayed back without error. I need to be able to enter a varchar value without error.
    My SQL QUERY is:
    select i.INDEXED_FIELD_ID, i.field_name,
    HTMLDB_ITEM.TEXT(3,d.indexed_field_value) field_value,
    decode(f.required, 0, 'O', 1, 'R', 'NOT USED') REQUIRED
    from XXVG_EFILE_DOCUMENT_FIELDS D,
    xxvg_efile_type_fields f, xxvg_efile_indexed_fields i
    WHERE f.indexed_field_id = i.indexed_field_id
    and f.required in (0,1)
    and i.indexed_field_id = d.indexed_field_id(+)
    and d.document_id(+) = -1
    and f.document_type_id = :p21_doc_type
    My after submit process is the following...**Note** I am using P21_test as a field just to display my test. I receive the value back just fine without error if numeric. If varchar, that is when the problems occur. I have used just a length variable like the lettter 't' for testing and still receive the error.
    DECLARE
    vRow BINARY_INTEGER;
    BEGIN
    -- update field values
    FOR i IN 1 .. HTMLDB_APPLICATION.g_f03.COUNT -- your field value
    LOOP
    vRow := HTMLDB_APPLICATION.g_f03(i);
    IF vRow is Not NULL --means the field has data in it.
    THEN
    :p21_test := HTMLDB_APPLICATION.G_F03(i); --set a variable to the field with data.
    END IF;
    END LOOP;
    END;
    Is there a conversion I need to do? I do not want to do this via checkboxes as I dont want the user have to check a checkbox and then enter a value in. I just want a blank text box the user can enter a value in and then i can do an insert.
    Thanks So much.

    Thanks Scott, That did do the trick as the varchar is now displayed of the entered item.
    How do i also display the value of indexed_field_id as well.
    I have an insert where i need the indexed field id and the entered field value.
    Thanks in advance.

    86 options sounds on the low side to be hitting that limit, but there are other concerns to this as well. Scrolling through hundreds/thousands of options in a select list is a pain for users, and huge select lists produce bloated pages that impact load times and network bandwidth. That list of around 200 countries you find on many sites is about the sensible maximum length for a select list.

  • Version 3.1 fault - ORA-06502 error when creating SQL Report Region/Page

    I usually perfect my query in SQL*PLUS before I create a new report region.
    Consequently, I copy the code into the region wizard to create the new page. However, since we have upgraded to Version 3.1, virtually every report I have tried to create has created the following error:
    ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
    It would appear that a maximum of 960 characters can be used to create the region/page. Perversely, once the page/region has been created, I can then edit the source and include as much code as I want (so far I've not run up against a limit)
    As it's just annoying, but not stopping me doing what I wanted to do, I've not got around to mentioning this error previously, but it occurred to me that I should (so I am!)
    David

    Hi David,
    Thank you for reporting this. Unfortunately, this was a regression introduced in Application Express 3.1. The workaround is to edit the region, as you suggested. This has been filed as Bug 6956070 and will be corrected in the forthcoming Application Express 3.1.1 patch set.

    This error message is seen on most of the pages when trying to accessed and not able to understand the reasons behind it. Its a brand new environment setup and not even presented to developers to test it.
    Below error message is always seen when trying to access most of the components like application builder, schema comparison and some other tabs. Please advice

    I think its better you use APEX 4.x version ratherthan using old version.
    You will get more features and some bug fixes and also it's easy for you to get some help when you need.

  • Report error:ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string bu

    We face the above error in HTMLDB (APEX) application Ver 3.1.0. This occurs when we try to display more number of rows/records in drop-down list (LOV in tabular forms). We are able to display 200 records in LOV. When the list of records exceeds 230, we face the below error
    report error:ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
    the values listed in LOV are from tables (one of the columns in table)
    Could anyone give us a solution?

    Hi
    As you are using a tabular form, you could actually do the following:
    1 - In the tabular form column's attributes, set the following:
    Display as: Select List (query based on LOV)
    Display extra values: Yes
    List of values definition: SELECT null d, null r FROM DUAL
    2 - Add a new page item and set it to generate your select list
    3 - Create an HTML region with no template and use the following for its source:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function loadList(c, l)
    var s = document.getElementsByName(c);
    var lItem = document.getElementById(l);
    var lLength = lItem.options.length;
    var k;
    var j;
    var x = lItem.innerHTML;
    var v;
    var o;
    var z;
    for (k = 0; k < s.length; k++)
    z = s[k];
    v = z.value;
    z.options.length = 0;
    for (j = 0; j < lLength; j++)
    o = new Option()
    o.value = lItem[j].value;
    o.text = lItem[j].text;
    z.options[j] = o;
    z.value = v;
    if (z.selectedIndex == -1)
    z.selectedIndex = 0;
    loadList("f05", "P1_MGR");
    </script>
    (Change "f05" and "P1_MGR" as appropriate to your column and your new page item respectively)
    Now, when you load the page, the select list contains a null entry plus the entry already on the database. The javascript kicks in automatically, loops through every entry in the "f05" column, copies the existing value, replaces the select list with the new page item version and sets its value to the copied value.
    Your new page item could be in a DIV tag that has a style of "display:none" to hide it from view.

  • Report error: ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: NULL index table k

    Hi everybody,
    I have two Distinct Databases on two distinct servers. (Oracle Ent. Release 10.2.0.3.0 on AIX 5.3). After I install the latest patch last week, One of the APEX installation has some problems on Home>Application Builder Page. The error message is very random and
    report error:
    ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: NULL index table key value.
    When i change the view (details to icons), everything goes to normal. This error message is reflected some of the pages (report region) of some of my applications randomly. When it appears in a report region, i deselect the order method of the region, the result is normal.
    But the other APEX application on the other instance has no problem. It is a bug? or Should i re-install the APEX instance?
    Thank you for your interest?

  • PL/SQL based report headings throw ORA-06502

    I have a report that presents a view containing over 500 columns. This is data generated by an ETL process (for a data mining app), and the view's column names are dynamically defined each time the data are compiled. I've got scrolling set up within the region and the report works fine (all ~500 columns) with headings based on Column Names. However since column names change, I must use the Region Source option to 'Use Generic Column Names (parse query at runtime only)' and define Headings Type as PL/SQL. I've written a function to build the ':' delimited field list from the data dictionary and it all works just fine for a small number of columns (i.e., when the view is defined as only a few fields). When I try the complete data (~500 columns), the report region shows "ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small". I've confirmed (in sql*plus) that the function returning the ':' delimited field list works fine. Anyone know if there a limit to the number of columns that HTMLDB can handle for dynamic headings? Or a workaround??

    Thanks for the reply. Couple of follow up questions...
    1) Is there a workaround to generate dynamic (run-time) headings that exceed the 4000 char limit?
    2) Page 1 of my app runs an PL/SQL process. One of the results of the process is a redefinition of my view's column names. Page 2 reports the view (~500 fields). Instead of PL/SQL function-based column headings, can either Page 1 or Page 2 directly update Page 2's report "static" column headings behind the scenes as some sort of page process?

    Hi,
    I was able to resolve the issue. I changed it to = To_Number while assigning.
    and for other issue, earlier I choose "Select List" for drop down. I changed this to "Select list with Submit". for the issue of "depending on this values in the report should get change"

  • ORA-06502: PL/SQL: at the end of an Excel Download report

    Hi,
    Within my apex application I have the possibility to download a file from ie. page 7 (which is linked to a query in page 8). When I open the downloaded file, I find an error at the end of the sheet:
    <pre>report error:
    ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character to number conversion error</pre>
    The thing is, the query that retrieves this report works perfectly, and when put in sql developer, it retrieves the same number of rows.
    So it must be that after the query has finished with all the rows, in encounters some kind of character ie. a space , that can´t convert to number and thus gives the error.
    Something worth noting is that, when I actually execute the page directly (page 8), that executes de query, it doesn´t give me the error on the excel.
    Any recommendations on a possible reason are welcome.
    Thank you,
    Javier

    ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small
    I am using bi publisher to generate PDF reports in oracle apex.
    We were using APEX 4.0 and migrated to 4.2 just a week ago.
    Now we have apex 4.2.
    When I try to Create report query,

    and test a report in a create wizard I am getting a error "ORA-06502: PL/SQL: numeric or value error: character string buffer too small".
    I have also applied a patch "16760897".
    This issue is because of number of columns in a query is more then 26.
    If I run a report with 26 or less number of columns then the is working fine, otherwise getting this error.
    My before migration report queries working perfectly even now, but not new queries.

    Any suggestions?
    Erik

    Erik,
    Thanks, this explains it. By specifying the request as part of your URL you run into the recently uncovered issue. The request you're setting is REMFROMLIST and ADD2LIST. You probably either have links that include those requests or you have branches where you specify them. Either way, in order to get reports sorting to work, you'll have to make sure that the request strings are not part of your URL. This is a work-around and the upcoming HTML DB patch release will solve this issue.
    One way of avoiding this is to have computations on the previous pages that set a napplication level or page level item to the REMFROMLIST and ADD2LIST values and then you can use those items for your conditions that are currently evaluating those strings.
    Hope this helps and sorry for the inconvenience,
    Marc
