Stalling and Freezing

I run Indesign CS4. It use to run perfectly for months, but in the last few weeks it has started to stall and freeze when I open old documents or even start new ones. I have tried to un/reinstalling useing the cleaning tool per trouble shoot. I have updated everything, drivers ect. I am running Windows Vista 64.
I have, i think narowed it down to a few issues/causes, but I cannot seem it find a fix for them.
1) InDesign is slow moving/stalling happens prefight is on (turn it off InDesign responds normally)
2) I cannot use auto hyphen or InDesign will stall.....why? (I work with books and use this feature all the time, it is a have to have-that i can't seem to use)
Overall since the latest Windows updates and/or the latest Adobe updates, InDesign seems to run slower.....Why? The other programs in the suite do not seem to be affected by whatever is causing this.

  • Troubleshooting 10.7.2 Intermittent System Stalls and Freezes

    Context
Problem is occurring on a PowerMac 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon running OS 10.7.2 with 6 GB RAM.
4 Hard drives installed. Normal startup drive is a 600 GB Western Digital VelociRaptor 3.5" drive. Other drives are Western Digital Caviar Black and Caviar Green drives.
No airport or bluetooth cards installed.
Internet access through ethernet connection to Netgear Gigabit Wireless router.
30 inch Cinema Display, wired mouse and keyboard.
    Problem Description
For sometime I have been experiencing intermittent system stalls and freezes. None of my troubleshooting has identified the problem. Sometimes when I am doing something, the system will freeze for a few seconds. There is no spinning ball. I am able to move the cursor but it retains the shape it was for the document I was working in but I can neither shift to another application nor shift to another command with the application I am in. Sometimes this behavior will end and normal operation resume. Or it will continue into a system freeze. The system freezes are such that only a power down will work. Sometimes they occur when the computer is asleep and sometimes when I am actively using it. This morning I did receive a spinning ball but it disappeared but the stall continued until, after a minute, I treated it as a freeze since nothing worked except the ability to move the cursor around the screen.
When I became aware of this behavior, it was after I had incrementally upgraded to OS 10.7.2. I later used the Mac OS 10.7.2 version 1.1 combo update. The problem continued.
    Troubleshooting
I have been systematically reviewing the console log to identify messages that might identify problems. For example, I located and removed a couple of files in the Library/StartupItems, Library/LaunchAgents, and Library/LaunchDaemons folders that were associated with applications already removed. I have also dropped several apps from my automatic launch sequence.
I have used several utilities to test RAM and other hardware and all tests have passed.
I have switched drives to startup and while I did not stay on a drive using 10.6.8 long enough to experience a system freeze, I did experience a system stall lasting for several seconds. Therefore I do not think it is a drive problem.
I have reduced to minimum the software being used and system has lots of free memory. Memory tests are good. (In Single User mode ran memtest for 2 runs.) Memory problem is unlikely.
=> Reviewing console messages, I find no correlation between the freezes and what is recorded in the logs.
Any suggestions as to how to proceed at this point?

The problem has been solved. In addition to the bad DIMMs, I had a defective video card and there were some software problems. The defective card was replaced and ran well for over 24 hours under intense computing tasks without problems using a Technican personailty. When I used it, I had problems right away. In consultation with Apple, I made the decision to erase (after cloning everything) and do a clean installation of Lion and all of my software. I have not completed installing everything but I have those tools I use on a daily basis now available.
    Some Lessons Learned
If you are doing something like this, do not use Migration Assistant to speed up the process. It will bring in everything and you will not really have a clean install.
It is easier if you make the Library on your new Lion drive visible and make the one on your old clone visible too. To avoid permission problems, you need to copy files into a Shared User folder and then copy them into the new destination folder.
If you don't do it right and you find you have problems, check out this link on how to repair User Permissions in Mac OS Lion: http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/15/repair-user-permissions-in-mac-os-x-lion/

  • Mail stalls and freezes when using "Send Mail" from Filemaker.  HELP!!!!

When I run Send Mail from Filemaker, there seems to be a limit to the number of email addresses Mac Mail can accept for broadcasting the same email to many people. It seems to stall and freeze at around 100 email addresses. Is there a fix for this or a setting that I have overlooked? I need to be able to broadcast mail to hundreds of recipients. Help????

    Hi,
This is likely not an issue with FileMaker but with your email provider that prevents you from 'spamming'. You'd need to send your emails in 'batches'. SMTPit might help here.

This issue has been happening for a while now. This is my "gaming laptop" and I currently
only play WoW. Yet even with my settings turned as low as I can get them my computer halts, stalls and completely freezes.
I've noticed that my computer NEVER goes above 50% disk usage. Almost as if its capped at 50%. And when it reaches 50% is when my
problems begin. Normally these programs have most of the usage when it randomly starts freezing at 50%.
    - svchost.exe Service Host: Local System (Network Restricted)
    - svchost.exe Service Host: Local Service (Network Restricted)
    - IAStorIcon.exe IAStorIcon (32 bit)
I guess my issue is why is my disk usage capped to 50% and how do I fix this so it can utilizes all 100% ?

  • Bookmarks is still stalling and freezing for more than 20 seconds!

This is my second query. Mozilla sent me a 'fix' problem email and I tried all the suggestions, but still... the freeze, stall problem with bookmarks persists.
Now after doing all that's been suggested Firefox Bookmarks is stalling... MORE often:
I got to 'Show all Bookmarks' and once it gives me that page, I click on an item...
    STALL FOR 5-10 seconds
I click and select a bookmarked address
    STALL AGAIN for 5-8 seconds
    I delete a book mark
    STALL AGAIN... 5 seconds
    On and On and On...
Does this problem have to do with Synching Firefox with 2-3 other computers? Should I just disable synching?

You should be cautious with deleting the bookmarkbackups folder as well as that will remove all JSON backups and you lose all the bookmarks and you won't be able to rebuild the places.sqlite database.
You normally only need to remove the places.sqlite to recover from issues with this file.
You should disconnect from Sync temporarily before deleting the places.sqlite file.

  • Time Machine starts normally, then stalls and freezes iMac

    Hello.
Time Machine always worked fine on this system.
Now-it starts to back up, then freezes after about 45 mb. When this happens, the toolbar at the top of the screen ("File", etc.) disappears, I can't run any other functions, and have to push the power button to crash the system.
    I have:
--deleted the time machine preferences file
--turned off Virus Barrier background scanning
--tried from scratch with a new back-up disc (same problem)
    --done all Software Updates
    --repaired permissions
--booted up from the OS X disc, and "repaired disc" on the hard drive.
--deleted "in progress" files on the back-up disc, and started over.
I have seen others with what sounds like a similar problem, but I can't find a suitable solution among the discussions.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Thank you.

On the MacBook, there was a specific file ("developer pckg") that was crashing back-up. I deleted the file, and I'm back in business.
In the iMac, things seem more complicated, and additional attempts at back-up not only stall--they also freeze the whole computer.
__At the start of the back-up the log reads:__
    Oct 5 11:20:35 Susies-Magnificent-New-iMac-2 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[259]: Backup requested by user

  • My iphone stalls and freezes while running certain programs

i just bought my iphone four days ago, it keeps locking up when i press the mail button or the weather button. then the whole screen goes to black. it has also done it once on the text messanging screen. is there something wrong with the phone, should i take it back. and also the edge of the chrome trim around the screen is off centered and has a sharp edge on it where you would grab it with in your palm

First sync your phone to your computer so you data is safe. Then you might try the Restore option on ITunes. If this doesn't fix the problem I think I would take it back to the Apple Store for a replacement if it were mine.
    Hope this helps.

  • How do I uninstall Mavericks and recover Lion?  I have a brand new iMac and web pages stall or freeze since I installed Mavericks.  I can't get it to download software for my printer when I connect it.

I have a brand new iMac.  It was working fine until I downloaded Mavericks.  Now I have web pages that freeze while trying to load.  The blue in the address bar stalls and freezes.  If I try to load from page 1 to a later page, or reverse that, I also have the same problem.  I tried to connect my printer for the first time, and again, the blue progress bar froze.  Then I got the yellow  triangle telling me there was a connection problem.  My internet connection is via an Air Card as that is my only option where I live.  I packed up the whole new iMac and took it to my Air Card provider, where they also have very fast Wifi, and they had the same problem with Wifi.  I use my Air Card with my MacBook and it works JUST GREAT!  I really want to return to Lion.  HELP.

The only way to retutn to Lion is to format your drive (erase, lose all) and either:
    1. clone back the clone copy i hoep you have, or
    2. first backup your files, then format and install Lion again
But really, mavericks works great. You have a problem. Find out why. First, what unusual software do oyu have installed that may be conflicting with it? Virus, system modifiers, etc?  Second what OLD software do you have that might be the problem.  finally, you might need to do a re-install if something errored during install.

  • Photoshop and Word Projects Stalling and or Freezing

Ironically,  this  problem I'm going tod escribe   has happend twice since I started to submit it at 6:10 am and again at 7:09 am this morning. Luckily, I copied it befoe  closing Safari and restarting:
Recently I've noticed that my Mac is not running as efficiently as usual. In particular, it has been stalling  while I am working in Photoshop or MS Word (or as just happened again, inSafari). Although  I usually can get it moving again without restarting —  just by clicking on either the desktop or Safari, my guess is that it will only get worse  with time unless I fix the problem. Since some incidents are immediately followed by a report from Safari, I've assumed that emptying its cache and  trashing  its preferences are the obvious places to start, but am embarrassed to admit that although I've searched everywhere (including inside the preference folder in the Library), I can't find either item.
Basic information about the MAC, Safari, MS Word and PS  is as follows:
The MAC: The  basic 21.5" desktop  Mac . . .  ( 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 /OS 10.8.3) . . .just celebrated its first birthday last month.  Although the desktop is filled with files and folders, "About This Mac" shows that 863.5 GBs of its 999.356 GBs are still unused.
    Safari: Version 6.0.3 (8536.28.10)
    Adobe Photoshop: CS6; version 13.0 x64
MS Word: Mac 2008; version 12.3.2
I realize there's at least one OS update for the Mac, but have opted to ignore it, because I believe in the old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" —  and when it comes to the update, it fixes apps I don't use. MS Word also was re-released just after I bought my current Mac. Not knowing  when it would reach the stores,  I contacted MS to see if there were any other versions (newer than the  one that came with Office 2008)  that were compatible with Mac OS 10 and they recommended the downloadable upgrade (available when I called)  for which I was still eligible . ..and which has worked perfectly until now.
One problem with these stalls and freezes is that on those occasions when just clicking on the desktop or Safari does not work, I have to restart PS or Word.  Luckily, when I do, all open documents are recovered, whether previously saved or not. But if they weren't saved, when recovered, they are listed with document numbers but no names. Since I usually don't want to break my train of thought by stopping to stop resave them with names before returning to the project I was working on when everything stopped, the list of recovered files gets longer exponentially — probably slowing down the working speed of the apps even further.
I recognize the need for better "housekeeping," but need to know if anything else has to be corrected first — and if so, how to attack it.

Having a lot of files on a Mac desktop can slow it down, though I don't think it would cause it to lock up in just a few programs. I think you'd more likely see it no matter what program you have open.
    Download & run Etrecheck: http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Post the results of its scan here - it just looks through your machine and reports back with details of the hardware and software that are on the machine.

  • Macbookpro screen strobes and freezes

my late 2007 macbook pro suddenly started to strobe (flashed very fast and uncomfortable to the eyes) and the froze. on attempted restart it got as far as the grey gear turning and would stall and freeze. i could not start on the install disc without it strobing and freezing again, so i took it in to apple, payed 79. bench fee and they said they got it started and found some directory problems which they fixed. got it home and hooked everything up and not long after it froze again and would not start. after that i looked at my OSX leopard "missing manual" that i had bought and it suggested a bad usb device or cable. after disconnecting everything, it starts and runs normally. should have read up on it first!

Have you changed anything in regards to Mac OSX, such as installing system updates, updating drivers, etc?
To me, it looks like your GPU may be failing.  Since Adobe software utilizes the GPU, that's why you're seeing it with these programs.  You should test with other software that utilizes the GPU and see what happens.

  • 10.1.3 is dogging and freezing

Haven't used fcp for a month or so and now have the new yosemite updates.  I'm bringing in a hour long 96 meg  mp4 video and it takes minutes to be useable and then portions are not useable and cpu is not really being used but fcp stalls and quits....  frustrating-   maybe this has to do with the mp4 but it plays fine in quicktime.
So I re exported the mp4 as a .mov  from quicktime and bring that into fcp and the video representations are coming up super slow in the library clips. they are just blue boxes.  I drag the clip down to the edit window and it's just showing blue too.  I try playing it and it freezes and quits on me....
All my older movies are showing as blue boxes too and slowly populating.  the cpu load is below 6% for fcp.   and it just quit on me AGAIN!!!  What the heck is going on??  It's been 30 minutes and 5 restarts...

Thanks for your attentions.   It was the movie that was the problem.
I did delete pref's and was shocked to see all my video's "were gone"... pretty scary for me since the way fcp is laid out is still a bit nebulous for me... I went into time machine to try to recover and ended up clicking on fcpbundle to bring back the original movies... but in any case I tried editing this same movie in iMovie and had similar trouble too...  so I suspected the movie even though it played fine in quicktime and converted fine (by quicktime) from mp4 into .mov  both mp4 and mov were still causing trouble.   SO  I reformatted the movie with compressor and wow did that take a long time- for a 90 meg movie on a top notch iMac it was running at like 200% cpu for maybe an hour and for a large portion the activity monitor indicated compressor not responding and the progress bar didn't hardly move.
Then I went back to fcp (deleted that "bad" movie) and used this reformatted movie and all is back to normal and very responsive.
So if anything for apple, there should be some indication that this movie (which came from a screen save session of Zoom webinar) is holding things up-  the fcp activity monitor did not show any unusual cpu activity (like 5%) and I didn't see any reason to think that this particular movie was causing problems... but apparently fcp was running background trying to "bring in" this movie...  and all the other movies I had in fcp were also showing blank/blue because of this tie up.  I would think that fcp would be amping up the activity to do this conversion - but all it did was have non-responsiveness and shutting downs.

  • Firefox stall and crash when adding or downloading any files

Firefox will stall and crash after attempting to add or download any kind of files. I have also note that when highlighted the words in the boxes under the top of the screen menus File, Edit, Tools and Help will look like frayed, this will not happen with the menus View, History and Bookmarks where the words are solid and clear.
I recently reinstalled Firefox and the program has created a Old Firefox Data in my desktop.
The last version I had +/- two years was also having a similar problem plus a total freeze and crash by going to Options, which does not happen anymore.
    Firefox 22
Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3

Although always very conscious of security in my pc, two years ago I have a bug trying to do some damage in this system. After some fight and the help of some online scanners, TDSSKiller and even Combo Fix, I tough I got ready of the problem; nevertheless I have to deleted Firefox because maybe it was compromise beyond the point of fixing.
This days find me reinstalling Firefox, I thought that furthers updates will have work for a stronger program and a clean running.
I have always like Firefox way above any other browser; is not as intrusive as others and reacts fairly fast (plus give me more options that the main stream and corporate ones).
    This computer runs now with:
    AVG Antivirus Free Edition 2013,
Spybot w/ Tea Timer (for the registry),
    SuperAntiSpyware,
    Malwarebites' Anti-Malware,
    Windows Defender,
    Zone Alarm (for firewall)
I try to run them often, even in safe mode when possible.
Ideato, if you are sure this is a malware related issue I will do as suggested at the end of this article that you point out (Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware) and go to see the Pros at Bleeping Computer Forums, once they are sure I don't have anything of risk I come back here for the follow up.
    What you think?
    Thanks, and thanks David too...

  • CPU is constantly overheating and freezing Satellite Pro A30

    Hi guys,
It appears my CPU is constantly overheating and freezing the PC.
(is this what happens when a CPU overheats?)
The fans are switching on/off eratically.
The heatsink seems quite hot but still touchable - although just.
As a trial I'd like to change my 2.6Ghz CPU for
a slower, cooler one to see if it solves the problem.
Can I just swap them, or do I need to change something
to ensure the new CPU runs at the slower speed ?
Is there anyway I can tell the current CPU to run
    at a slower speed ?
(I cannot even get windows installed as
    the PC stalls before finishing)
    Thanks,
    Ray.

As mentioned by James the Power saver controls the CPU speed and the cooling method.
You can change the settings and check if it will help.
But one question; How long do you use this notebook or how old is it?
Sometimes after long usage the dust and debris could has a bad influence on the cooling modules and fan rotation.
Mostly a cooling module cleaning could help to prevent from the overheating. But I would not recommend to clean the notebook yourself if you have no experience.
In my opinion a technician should do that.

  • Flash stops working and freezes firefox. I have Fast dial and dont want to lose it so what can I do to fix this?

It doesnt matter what site or what I am doing it will come up randomly and freeze firefox then finally a box pops up and says Flash is busy or not responding continue or stop plugin. Naturally I stop plugin. I always install the latest flash versions I have even uninstall and reinstalled flash and downgraded and still no change or it bugs me to update. I am using firefox 26.0 I usually stay away from the betas if all possible. My biggest worry with using the reset firefox or making a new profile is my fast dial I have tons of sites right there waiting for me to click on and im afraid if I do all this I will lose it. But I have used same profile for years and years so maybe its time. I will just have to redo my fast dial I guess Unless someone can come up with another way to do it. I have disabled hardware acceleration on firefox I have to it makes my browser do some weird things. I also have disabled Hardware acceleration in flash as well. I have cleant temp files and registry. I am good with computers but have never seen issues like this with flash. If anyone could help that would be great. Thanks.

Sounds like you have done a lot. Have you tried to make a new profile for TESTING purposes only? You could have a bad profile. it is possible.
Also, have you tried protect mode for flash? I wrote up a bat file to set it up so you don't have to go digging through system files.
Also i have some unorthodox methods you will not see in these forums to try out if you are interested as they have resolved several peoples that i can confirm issue. I have been going crash free for over 6 months now since i implemented. Believe me some issues nothing in these forums will resolve. Click on my name on the left there is a blog i created just for this issue with all the info and some of the fixes. Everything is fully automated. Very little user interaction.
This will NOT work for everyone, but you cant hurt by trying
    Best regards

  • Bridge CC is asking my to 'purge cache'. When I do this doesn't work and freezes my mac. Bridge is unable to work at all. Please help?

When I start up Bridge CC I get a error message instructing me to purge cache in preferences which I do but it doesn't work and freezes my mac. I cannot curretnly use Bridge CC. PLease help as this is costing me time and money - thank you in advance....

Hold down the Option key as you launch Bridge, keep it down until you see a dialog box, then click all three options in the re-set box that comes up.
If you don't see that re-set box, you're doing it wrong, i.e., you're not holding the Option key down fast enough.
