Started with reversed caps lock, now.....

Yesterday while working in Word, my caps lock reversed function as well as num-lock. Shutting down and restarting seems to have fixed most of the problems but now to dim my screen or change the volume, I need to press the fn key in combination with the appropriate F-key. Also num-lock key won't function. Any ideas...?

Sounds like to need to do a bit of maintenance.
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.

An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:

By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:

If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • IMac Black Screen, making some progress with the CAPS LOCK key...What???!!!

Ok, super weird situation here. My friend brought me his iMac because when he turns it on, it makes the chime sound, the front light goes on, but the screen stays black.
The first thing I tried (as a former pc user) whas to start pressing the CAPS LOCK ON and OFF to see if the computer froze at some point, but to my surprise, after hitting the CAPS LOCK many times the screen appeared.
Ok, but the white screen with the gray apple was all distorted, the apple with be filled with little rainbow boxes and lines on the whole screen, so I thought, the Video converter might be bad.
But then, when I tried for the third of fourth time, it appeared the same white scren with the gray apple and the progress circle spinning again, but this time it looked perfect, BUT it froze, and it just stayed there.
Thats what I have so far......any ideas? I tried the Controlcommand+PR but it didnt do anything......
    Thanks

It appears that the Mac is passing the Power On Start Test which results in the chime advising that the RAM seems OK. But there is something wrong with the boot volume. Try booting from the Install DVD that came with the Mac. In the Utilities menu of the Installer use Disk Utility to Repair Disk. In the left hand list choose the boot volume. On the right hand, in the First Aid pane press the Repair Disk button. Repeat until no repairs are reported.

You may have hit Command-F5. It turns VoiceOver on and off. Look in the "Seeing" pane of "Universal Access" System Preference.

  • Searching Safari 6.1 with/without caps lock on

Searching Safari 6.1 using the search field at the top of the page gives more restricted suggestions based on history if the caps lock is on vs. the caps lock being off.  This didn't happen in previous versions of Safari.  It also happens in the latest version of Safari that comes with Mavericks as I was able to demonstrate it at an Apple store.  Is there a workaround or preference to choose other than keeping caps lock off ?

Sorry, need to make this clearer.  If you have discussions.apple.com in your history and start entering this to the search field with caps lock on, it will not populate the search field automatically.  If the caps lock is off, it will.

  • Shift-Caps Lock-Tab not working with remapped Caps Lock

I've remapped my Caps Lock key to Ctrl using the Preferences > Keyboard > Modifier keys dialog and in the following question when I say CTRL i mean the Caps Lock key remapped to Ctrl and Ctrl is the normal left Ctrl key.
I'm using OS X 10.9.4 and I've just bought 2 new external corded Apple keyboards and both of them are having trouble with the key combination Left Shift + CTRL + Tab. For applications where that combination should go to the previous TAB it does not work. If I use the right Shift instead it works fine, if I use the left Ctrl key instead of the remapped Caps Lock key it works great too.
The internal keyboard on the laptop works fine with Left Shift - Caps Lock - Tab.
The computers are a Macbook Air 11" Mid 2011 and a Macbook Pro 15" Mid 2010.

    Hey,
Sorry to hear about the keyboard problem.
In a post a while back had this to say.  He makes a suggestion that the keyboard might need to be replaced, then the person with the question tried something else.  You might take a look and see if there's something there that will help.
Thanks for coming to the forum.
    Hope I helped,

  • Reverse Caps Lock

I am typing on my iPad using my iMac keyboard through bluetooth.
Sometimes my caps lock reverses. By that I mean I sometimes get ALL CAPS when it is off and lower case when it is on & lighted.
I fix this by closing apps, turning bluetooth off, powering down the iPad, then rebooting 30 seconds later. All returns to normal.
What causes this? Is it related to iOS7? Am I hitting a key combination to make it happen?  Is it a sign from God?
    Most answers are appreciated.

I suppose it could be related to iOS 7. Have you updated to iOS 7.0.2?
If the steps you've described fix it, maybe just a simple reboot or a reset would work
    Try this next time
Reboot the device by pressing and holding down the home and sleep/wake buttons (power) at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings

  • I got a external Apple Wired Keyboard (w/ NumPad), caps lock mapped to control doesn't work with tab + caps lock + shift

I got a external Apple Wired Keyboard (w/ NumPad) since I'm a developer. I have used control panel > keyboard > modifier keys to make the caps lock key the control key. I can't get it to work when I press caps lock (which maps to control) +shift + tab (which I use to change tabs backwards).
Any ideas? It works when I use the regular control key, and it works on my built-in MBPro keyboard. Thx!

Hi Steve, Welcome to apple discussions.
Hmm, that is a strange problem. Well, you've already done what I would suggest which is to go to the keyboard settings and click the "Restore defaults" button in the modifier keys window and try again. If that doesn't work then you can restart the computer and check. If that doesn't work you can try to reset the pram. Hold the optioncommand+PR buttons after you hear the startup chime, it should chime again, I let it chime a third time just for good measure and see if things look better.
If that fails then you can try making another account and seeing if the caps lock works in the new account. There might be some strange error on your account that would be corrected for in a new account. After that it gets more labor intensive. Do a system re-install, do an erase and install.
You might consider a trip to the apple genius bar there in Honolulu if can. The should be able to run through all that for you. You're still under warrantee so take advantage and get some help.
Oh, and just a disclaimer that I learned from Adam on the maccast podcast. Make a full, complete backup including a time machine and bootable (like superduper or carbon copy cloner) disk before you do any of the above or take the unit it for service.
    Hope this helps.

  • All of my text/fonts is in CAPS(with no cap lock on).  How do I turn this off?

My PSE text(all fonts) will only produce CAPS tho my caps lock is off.  Can anyone help me turn them off?  Thanks.

    Hi,
This is usually fixed by resetting the Type tool.
Since you didn't say which version of Photoshop Elements you are using see if the following helps.
    For recent versions
    For earlier vesrions
Please let us know if it fixes your problem

  • Started with a Dreamweaver template; now several errors

I started out with a template from Dreamweaver. I modified with my own text and images and changed the Spry Menu Bar items. I've changed some background images. And now I have some goofy things happening. I would be glad to have any help possible. The url: winneshiekcountyfair.org. I am copying the stylesheet.css at the bottom.
    1. The menu items slide up and flicker when you hover or click and the links don't work!
    2. A bannernav in the top disappears: two items--Privacy Policy and Contact Us
    3. Several problems in the footer: whenever I try to make the text link to page, it moves and/or disappears
Part of the text in the copyright area disappears. It should say 'c2014 Winneshiek County Fair | top image "Ferris Wheel"courtesy of www.nocturnalimages.com'

  • Hard reboot with binking caps lock and num lock lights DELL XPS M1530

After returning from work I saw my DELL XPS M1530 had hung and there was blinking CAPS and NUM lock indicators, I had to hard reboot.
This has happened with me some times.
How can I investigate? Is there some log which i can see after hard reboot?

I used to have that problem on my laptop also. It seems to plague a good number of XPS 1530 owners. From what I can tell the problem seems to be either graphics card drivers or wireless card drivers. Do you happen to have the intel 4965agn card? If not, what hardware do you use for wireless and graphics?

  • Mac Pro bootup issues: started with graphical artifacts, and now nothing.

    My computer specs:
    - Purchased August 2008
    - 2x 2.8GHz Quad-Core Xeon
    - 2 Apple 1GB RAM sticks
    - 2 Kingston 4GB RAM sticks
    - NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT 512MB
-== The Saga of Trouble, Episode 1: Into the Very Heart of Trouble ==-
Started World of WarCraft. Trying to get rare Green Proto-Drake mount. Suddenly, approx. 3 minutes after starting the game, the display goes haywire: artifacts, flickering, you name it.
    Tried:
    - Power-cycling display: image returned, still messed up.
    - Command-Q: nothing, no response.
    - Yelling at computer: nothing, no response.
    - Holding in power button to shut down: system shut down.
    - Rebooting: no REFit bootup (I have REFit installed), and the gray Apple logo has graphical artifacts. Eventually I'm brought to a screen that looks like something out of an NES where the cartridge hasn't been cleaned.
    - Rebooting with a different monitor: same result.
-== The Saga of Trouble, Chapter 2: Love is the Key, But Only When Contextually Relevant ==-
Cursing several times, and promising the Mac Pro swift physical retribution should it refuse to work, as, in my hubris, I haven't made a Time Machine backup in a while, I unhooked all cables from the tower, set it on an appropriate work surface, and opened it.
    Tried:
    - Dusting the interior with compressed air: dusted without incident.
    - Checking to ensure graphics card was well-seated: it was.
    - Checking to ensure RAM sticks were well-seated: they were.
    - Complimenting self on proper usage of past tense: false sense of satisfaction given my Mac Pro's trouble.
-== The Saga of Trouble, Third Strike: Startup on Low Forward Reduced by Two Frames ==-
Reconnected everything and attempted to boot. A fan that normally whirs on startup (I assume from the graphics card, but I didn't visually confirm in the past) is not whirring. The characteristic "Apple noise" is heard, but nothing on screen.
    Tried:
    - The other DVI port on the graphics card: no dice.
    - Another monitor: nothing.
    - Another monitor on the other DVI port on the graphics card: no luck.
-== The Saga of Trouble, Future Shock: Escaping the Saga of Trouble ==-
With two upcoming trips, all part of chasing my dreams to become an awesomely famous screenwriter and game designer, instead of just an aspiring wannabe, I cannot afford to do what I think will solve the problem, and that's purchasing a new graphics card.
Given my foolishness in not making regular Time Machine backups, reinstalling the OS is going to be a last resort. As in I'm not trying that until I've exhausted all other options (which, as taught in college and in the four years of my life I wasted as an IT guy for an ISP, is not what you should try first anyway). I'll exorcise the HDD and plug it into something else before I reinstall the OS.
Given the above two points: what's my next step? Is there something I can try before either purchasing a new graphics card or reinstalling the OS?
Many thanks in advance for any advice.

    Apple firmware (or flashed card).
The ATI line of Apple cards use universal EFI (EBC) so even the new 5770/5870s work as well.
Check the test results coming out on
    http://www.barefeats.com comparing cards.
I realize the hard restart may be 'necessary' but booting from DVD or running the single user mode command FSCK -fy can minimize directory repair problem if you don't have OS X on another drive.
Installing OS X is fast and easy if you can shrink 30GB off another drive that you would then be able to boot from and has just mini OS and utilities.
Cache files often are the first to become corrupt as well, or prefs, anything that was in memory and that are changed frequently and after a startup. Cache files are automatically rebuilt and no fear if you can delete those.
AppleJack and Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner can 'enhance' what diskutil fsck you can do and add some more commands.
8800GTs are harder to find, still on ebay at times.

  • Ouch keeps on crashing. Started with Echofon/FB but now also emails, games, google etc. How can I stop this happening? Thanks

My ipod Touch keeps on crashing. Started when using Echofon/FB, but now does it on email, apps, games, Google etc. How do I stop this happening? Thanks

    Try here:
iOS: Troubleshooting applications purchased from the App Store
    Also try:
    - Resetting the iPod. nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restoring the iPod from backup
    - Restoring the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • Configuring JDI help, started with WEBAS 630 sp3 now with WEBAS 640 sp 9

    hi guys ,
i was configuring  a JDI  with a recently installed server with WEBAS640 kit  i had not applied any patches to it .... after getting half way thru the configuration process when i was about to configure my name server in SLD  i say that there wasn't an option to create a new SLD inside the new technical system dropdown menu ..so after killing myself a couple of time to find out  what the hell the problem could be ..i saw it right in front of my eyes .... patches ..that's the ticket so i downloaded sp 9 and installed it ..
my question is since i deployed the JDI files with the old version   can i continue the configuration process or should i redeploy everything and start over again ?
thanks in advance to all you ubergeeks out there may your code be just and your pings be true
