Starting Xnest on Solaris 10 Sparc

I cannot get an Xnest server to start under CDE or java/gnome on a Sun Blade running Solaris 10. I keep getting errors related like:
Fatal server error:
Failed to establish all listening sockets
My $DISPLAY is :0.0
I have tried many commands including:
Xnews :1.0 -depth 8 -class Pseudocolor
to no avail. Does anyone know of the exact command-line entry I should use?
Thank you in advance...

Great! Thank you very much for the info. I'll try that right away. The man pages for Xnest are not very helpful: they should give a few examples, and error messages.

  • Unable to start OUI on Solaris Sparc

I am trying to run the Oracle Universal Installer(which installs my application server) for Linux on SOLARIS 11 OS on SPARC. It is giving me the following error on running the runInstaller file.
    install/.oui: cannot execute [Invalid argument]
Note- While running the same OUI on linux, I am able to install successfully. Furthermore, I have performed the pre requisite checks like a separate oracle user and read and write permissions. I tried to search other forums regarding this but couldnt find a solution for this.

    Hi Anurag,
The problem is that OUI is not downloadable .
runInstaller file makes a call to .oui file, which is present in the install folder. Can you tell me the flow process or the algorithm used in this file?
Can this file be customized depending on certain requirements?

  • REP-3000: An internal error occured starting Oracle Toolkit Solaris 10 SPARC

    I am running WL 10.3.6.0 with Forms/Reports 11.1.2.1.0 on a Solaris SPARC 10 64-bit box, specifically a T4.
Brand new install of Solaris 10 with only Forms/Reports installed as the user "oracle".
When I run rwbuilder.sh I get the dreaded REP-3000 error.  I currently have an SR opened with Oracle but its taking forever and I've scoured the net for many different fixes which do not work.  Forms Builder does work fine however.
Some things I have checked and/or changes I have made:
DISPLAY - set properly.  I use ReflectionsX to get to my server, I can run xclock also, I've even tried xhost+.
I've tried running rwbuilder.sh direct at the console to make sure its not a ReflectionsX issue, same error.
    NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1
I've done an ldd on "rwbuilder" to make sure the binary's dependencies were met, all fulfilled with no problems.
    Updated reports.sh:
    REPORTS_DEFAULT_DISPLAY=NO
    DISPLAY=(updated with my direct IP:0.0)
    Relinked reports builder.
At this point I'm stumped.  Anyone actually have Reports Builder working on a Solaris 10 SPARC box or am I poineering this?  LOL

    REPORTS_DEFAULT_DISPLAY=NO is correct on AIX
    Take a look at http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/html/B14048_02/pbr_rfap.htm#sthref3930
To revert to the dependency on DISPLAY and use screen fonts (old font look up algorithm):
    * Set REPORTS_DEFAULT_DISPLAY=NO
    * Remove the screenprinter.ppd entry in the uiscreenprint.txt file.
    * Set the DISPLAY variable to the active X-Windows display surface.
    Regards,
    Martin

  • How to install Apache Web Server with PHP on Sun Solaris Sparc machine

    Hi,
We are trying to install the Apache Web Server and the PHP package on a Sun Solaris Sparc machine running on SunOS 5.8. We are having compilation problems with the source code of both these packages.
Does anybody know if there are ready solaris packages for Apache and PHP available from where we can download and install instead of source code compilation?
Or any instructions / things to watch for when installing Apache with PHP (if anybody has tried installing Apache with PHP on Sun Solaris earlier) is most welcome.
    Thanks,
    Harish

Apache should be bundled along with Solaris check in "/var/apache" in Solaris 8 and Solaris 9
    php is available at www.php.net
I found an old document for installing PHP maybe this will help.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Installing PHP 3.x for Apache 1.x.x on Solaris
    Introduction
This document describes how to install PHP for Apache on Solaris.
You should have Apache installed before trying to install PHP.
If you want to use PHP with MySQL then you must install MySQL first.
    Before we Begin
    1. These instructions assume that you have Apache installed according to instructions.
    Getting PHP
    1. You must be logged in as root to perform this installation.
    su root
    2. I save all my downloads in:
    /usr/local/dist
If you don't already have one, you may need to create that directory now:
    mkdir /usr/local/dist
    3. You can get PHP 3.0.14 from here(www.php.net).
    cd /usr/local/dist
    ftp ftp.php.net
    cd pub/distributions
    bin
    get php-3.0.14.tar.gz
    bye
    Installing PHP
    1. We will install PHP in /usr/local/build, but use a tricky tar command
to do it in on hit from the download directory:
    cd /usr/local/dist
    tar xvfz php-3.0.12.tar.gz -C ../build
    Compiling PHP
    1. First let's get where the action is:
    cd /usr/local/build/php-3.0.14
    2. You now have 3 options:
    * Simple PHP install without MySQL - goto step 3
    * Simple PHP install with MySQL - goto step 4
    * Custom PHP install - goto step 5
    3. Simple PHP install without MySQL. Next, jump to step 6.
    ./configure --with-apache=../apache_1.3.12
    4. Simple PHP install with MySQL. MySQL must be installed before you can configure PHP to use it. I recommend that MySQL should always be reachable with /usr/local/mysql. Even if you install it else where you
should create a symbolic link from /usr/local/mysql. Otherwise the compiler can have problems finding the mysqlclient library. The command
    should look like this:
    ./configure with-mysql=/usr/local/mysql with-apache=../apache_1.3.12
    Next, jump to step 6.
    5. Custom PHP install. Take a look at the available configuration directives by using this command:
    ./configure --help
    6. Now we can make the PHP executable. This may take a while.
    make
    7. Now we install the PHP module with:
    make install
Adding the PHP Module to Apache
    1. Now we have to setup Apache to include the PHP module:
    cd ../apache_1.3.12
    2. Re-configure Apache to use the PHP module. You should use your previous Apache configure command along with the PHP activate module directive.
You can see your previous Apache configure command by doing:
    cat config.status
You can configure Apache using the previous command with the added PHP module by doing:
    ./config.status --activate-module=src/modules/php3/libphp3.a
If you used the simple Apache install from instructions the command will look like this:
    ./configure prefix=/usr/local/apache activate-module=src/modules/php3/libphp3.a
    3. Make and install Apache with PHP enabled:
    make
    4. We need to stop the server before installing the files:
    /usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl stop
    5. Now we can install the new binaries:
    make install
    6. Start apache again (now running the new php enabled version):
    /usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start
    Setting Up PHP
    1. We have to tell Apache to pass certain file extensions to PHP. We do this in Apache's httpd.conf file.
    cd /usr/local/apache/conf
    2. Edit the httpd.conf file. If you do a search for php you will find a couple of commented out lines telling Apache to use the PHP module. You should uncomment them to look like this.
    AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .php3
    AddType application/x-httpd-php3-source .phps
    3. I prefer to use the extension .phtml, you can use whatever extension you like (even .html) by adding lines to httpd.conf like this:
    AddType application/x-httpd-php3 .phtml
    Check that it Works
    1. We have to restart Apache to make these changes take effect on the running server.
    cd /usr/local/apache/bin
    ./apachectl restart
    2. Apache should now be running with PHP enabled. The server version should include PHP/3.0b2.
    ./apachectl status
    Apache Server Status for dev.synop.com
    Server Version: Apache/1.3.9 (Unix) PHP/3.0.12
    Server Built: Oct 25 1999 00:37:07
    3. Now it is time to test PHP with a page. The simplest thing to do is create a page called test.php3. My file is here. This file contains the
    following text:
    <?php phpinfo(); ?>
    4. Point your browser at this file on the virtual host which you used:
    http://localhost/test.php3

  • W2100z Supplemental 2.5 XpReburn produces non-bootable ISO in Solaris Sparc

Just posting in case helps someone else...
The XpReburn script from the W2100z Supplemental 2.5 CD is commented as being able to run on Solaris Sparc:
    # This script was developed on Solaris X86. It will run on Solaris Sparc
    # and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3. It is not guaranteed to work unmodified
    # accross all versions of Linux. This script is experimental. Some end user
    # MODIFICations may be necessary for it to run on other linux distributions
    # and system configurations.Running XpReburn under Solaris Sparc 10 produced an .ISO image apparently without error, but the resulting image would not boot.
Found the cause of the non-bootable image was the following section of XpReburn. It was using dd and od to extract 16-bit LBA values. On Solaris Sparc it ended up reading little-endian values as big-endian, hence extracting the boot loader from the wrong part of the XP CD. To get it to work under Solaris Sparc added conv=swab twice as shown below:
    # Read the boot loader from the CD into the image directory as a file. This process takes
    # several steps because the boot record has to be consulted to locate the RBA (the
    # starting LBA of the boot catalog). The boot record always resides at LBA 17

    Michael,
Reading the submission guidelines it appears BigAdmin is for you own work:
By submitting content to the BigAdmin portal, you are attesting that your submission is your own non-confidential property and does not infringe the intellectual property rights of any party.
Whereas my "hint" above is really a bug report / enhancement request for a Sun supplied script.
I only have a basic support plan so don't think I can raise a bug report.
    Also:
    1) The modification listed was a quick hack to get the script to work under Sparc Solaris, but which would have caused the script to generate a non-bootable ISO if run under X86 Solaris.
    2) If you run the script on a ZFS filesystem you get an error that the filesystem isn't local - the script should be updated to consider a ZFS filesystem as local.
    3) If the script is run on a Solaris system with two optical drives, the script fails with an error because fails to correctly read the volume name of the XP CD. Can't remember the details, but just hacked the script to work.
So, so for now will just leave the "hint" in this thread.

  • JDeveloper/OAF in our EBS R12 (12.1.3) web server. Solaris Sparc 64bit mach

    Problem Description
Am trying to setup and use the JDeveloper/OAF in our EBS R12 (12.1.3) web server. Solaris Sparc 64bit machine.
Followed the metalink document 416708.1 and took the zip p9879989_R12_GENERIC.zip as instructed in the training class. The readme does not mention about installing in UNIX. I am getting all shorts of errors when invoking "jdev".
Error occurred during initialization of VM
    java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object
Error: JDeveloper can't recognize the JDK version
Please let me know the steps.

    Hi ,
Normally the Jdeveloper setup will be done in Windows (32bit or 64 bit) for development of new pages, or extension.
I understand that you are trying to setup the Jdevelopment for your development in a Solaris Sparc 64bit machine, it should be possible because Oracle Development use Unix machine to run the Jdeveloper for development.
    Please try
To work around this you should edit the $JDEV_HOME/jdev/bin/jdev.conf -file and comment out the line that shows:
    SetJavaVM hotspot
After this you should be able to start JDeveloper 10.1.2.
You might get some weird sticky startup screen showing in front of the initial questionnaire windows. After passing these (either try moving the windows or just pressing Enter) you should be fine with JDeveloper.
    If that didnt work,
And check the below thread helps,

  • Solaris/Sparc vs. Tru64/Alpha

    Hi,
I posted this a week ago, but now that the newsgroup server has been
moved I no longer see the thread (in other words, sorry if this is a
    duplicate)
Does anyone have any comments on running WLS, WLCS on Solaris/Sparc vs.
Tru64/Alpha? I particularly interested in performance and platform
    support.

Then you start getting to the high end gear with
features like hot swap components. Redundant power
supply. Splitting boxes into redundant hardware
domains etc. These features are insanely expensive in
the sparc world, but pretty much don't exist in the
    x86 world...Why such features don't exist is x86 world?
There are a lot of servers based on x86 (Compaq/HP ProLiant, HP Netserver, IBM NETFINITY atd etc.), they have redundant power supplys, hot plug/swap hard drives and other redundant hardware.
I worked few years with Compaq/HP ProLiant servers, they are entry level in pricing, but giving a nice performance and redundancy. Actually, in 3 years of my work, they never failed, exepting hard drives failure and hot swapping them to new ones without work interruption.
x86 based servers can be even up to 8 CPU's and more.
Still largest servers are based and will be based on RISC architecture.

  • Acrobat 9.1 for Solaris Sparc

    Hi,
Have to start with, thanks for the 9.1 on Solaris x86 port, much needed since we where using version 4 which started to become old...
But, we are still very much on Solaris Sparc, when is 9.1 planned to be be released since I would like to have the same version on both platforms.
    once again, thanks for 9.1
    Michael

    Hello Michael/Karl,
In 9.1, there is no SPARC release, only x86.
The latest SPARC compatible Adobe Reader version is 8.l.4
We will keep you posted if any more developments arise.

  • How can I install Oracle Database 10g for Solaries (SPARC) from the console

    Dear Forum Members,
In my office, I have to installed Oracle Database 10g for Solaries (SPARC). But I have to do it without DISPLAY Monitor. Is it possible install it by remote login to this server using response file (silent mode) or something like that?
    If yes. Then How?
If anyone have the exact solution, then I need your feedback. I shall wait for your reply.
    Thanks

There are 2 possible ways to accomplish this.

    Second, (cut/paste from other site)
How to install Oracle software remotely?
Remote Software Installation Steps: (For Solaris only)
If you want to install Oracle Software remotely, you should perform the following steps. These steps are applicable only if your source and target machine are running Unix.
For example, you can install Oracle Software from your home from Washington, DC to a target source in California.
    1. Pick your source server or machine for remote installation.
    2. Check that your CD is in your source CD-ROM drive.
    3. On the target machine, find your target machine name with the output of the /usr/bin/hostname
    4. On the source machine, login as a user.
    5. On the source machine, enable client access: % /usr/openwin/bin/xhost + target-machine-name
    6. Become root user by typing: su (don’t use -)
    7. Check that Volume Manger is running. # ps –ef |grep vold (if you see an entry that contains /usr/sbin/vold, Volume Manager is running. Then skip to Step 10.
    8. If not then do the following: # mkdir –p /cdrom/your-cd-file-name
    9. # mount –F hsfs –r cdrom-device /cdrom/your-cd-file-name
    10. Add the following line to your /etc/dfs/dfstab file: # share –F nfs –o ro /cdrom/your-cd-file-name
    11. Verify whether your source machine is an NFS server: # ps –ef | grep nfsd
    12. If you see an entry that contains /use/lib/nfs/nfsd –a 16, then nfsd is running and skip to Step 16.
    13. If nfsd is running, then type: # /usr/sbin/shareall
    14. If nfsd is not running, then start nfsd by typing: # /etc/init.d/nfs.server start
    15. Verify whether your source machine is an NFS server again by typing: # ps –ef | grep nfsd
    16. Make sure your source machine is exporting your product directory by typing: # /usr/sbin/dfshares
    17. Now, log in to the target machine by type: # rlogin target-machine-name –l user (not root)
    18. Then log in as the root user by typing: # su
    19. Go to the source machine by typing: # cd /net/source-machine/cdrom/your-cd-file-name ,then Skip to 24.
    20. If you cannot change to that directory in Step 19 and you do not have an auto-mounter on your network, then create amount point by typing the following commands.
    21. # mkdir /remote_products
    22. # /usr/sbin/mount –F nfs –r source-machine:/cdrom/your-cd-file-name /remote_products
    23. # cd /remote_products
    24. Redirect the target machine display to source machine by typing: # DISPLAY=source-machine:0; export DISPLAY (if you use a Bourne or Korn shell).
    25. Start the Web Start Installer by typing: # ./installer (or whatever the installer name program is).

  • EM12c: Oracle Solaris Sparc Agent unabailable

    Hi everyone!
I have this problem. I deployed EM12C on a server (Solaris x86) and I managed to deploy the agent donwloading it with EM12c into a Solaris Sparc.
I was able to view metrics and manage the databases on Solaris Sparc server.
Our client refused to use the Solaris x86, and now we have installed EM12C over a Windows Server. We want to reach the old Solaris Sparc Agent but we are unabailable. I have network connectivity from the W2k to the Sparc and I reach the port. The agent is started but I cant discover it again.

  • Patch number for Oracle 8.1.7.4 on Solaries SPARC 64bit

    Guys,
    Oracle Version: 8.1.6.0
    OS: Solaris SPARC 64-bit
I would like to patch to 8.1.7.4. I need a patch number for this, I find it very difficult to search for the patch on Metalink. Would you please suggest the patch number and maybe also suggest the easier way to search for patches on Metalink.
    Thanks in advance
    Durbanite

    Go to Metalink
Click on "Patches & Updates" tab
    Click on "Simple Search"
Search by "Product and Family" and enter RDBMS Server
Choose the target release you are looking for (8.1.7.4)
    Patch type => "Patchset/Minipack"
    Classification => "Any"
Choose the "Platform or Language" your plateform (Sun Solaris SPARC 64bits)
And finally click on Go button.
You'll get only one row as result, the patchset you are looking for actually.
    Nicolas.

Hi, we've got a similar problem with JVM 1.5.0_06, although the SIGSEGV appeared not on a Compiler thread, but on a JavaThread:
    # An unexpected error has been detected by HotSpot Virtual Machine:
