Startup problems w/ Power Mac G4 (QuickSilver 2002) M8667LL (dual 1 GHz)
Starts up with bong and then a long wait then screen comes on with old time smiley Mac and spinning beach ball then another long wait and then OS X loading bar and then a panic screen. Subsequent start, bong, and then hard drive spins for 6 or 7 minutes, then hard drive stops and then nothing. Could this be symptomatic of a hard drive failure?

I am pleased to report that I think the problem has been solved. Apparently the strange behavior can be attributed to overheating. After some on line research and the help of people on this list I opened the case and found that the logic board fan was clogged full of lint and dust. After cleaning it I discovered that the fan is inoperable. The computer is now operating with the case open and a small electric fan directed at the logic board heat sink. The computer has been operating flawlessly now for several hours. Will have to replace the bad cooling fan and clean the computer regularly. Thanks so much to all of the people who have responded to my request for help. Would like to mention that a firm with a canine connection charged me over a hundred dollars to report that their diagnosis is a faulty logic board.

Now the Problem:
in the last time I ear that the G4 after clicking on the Login Window on SLEEP is often gone to shutdown. The last week I made this check and the G4 gone to shutdown and after x seconds again ON without external intervention. Was this not a real shutdown (the light on the Power button was NOT PULSING)
What I have just done:
I resetted trought booting + OF all Boot parameters, I made the CUDA reset, I bought a new PMU Battery and now (all disconnected also the HDs) when I push the Power Botton the Fan TRIES to go but after a microsecond is cutted off power. The last time, while trying to take care of my G4, that it had made a little of work was tonight WHITOUT PMU/Battery I made login, I have seen that THE DATE WAS RIGHT (without PMU-Battery !!!) I just choose the right Display Conf, then I started DiskUtility first CHECK Disk and then I was looking for solutions @apple Support on another machine PUFF the G4 has gone OFF and ON and OFF than I unplugged the POWER cable.
Now I don t know any more, suggestions ?

I'm having a bit of a problem with the translation. I think what you're saying is that when you attempt startup, the Mac initially gets only a momentary bit of power, with the red LED lighting briefly, then shutting off, after which nothing happens. Occasionally, the Mac starts to the point where the hard drives begin to spin up, but then they, too, shut down. You would like to try booting to the install disc with the drives disconnected, but can't get far enough along in the startup process to open the optical drive tray.
If what I've said above is correct, you can open your optical drive tray manually. Use a fingernail to open the dust cover of the optical drive and look for a tiny hole on the face of the drive below the tray. If you insert a paperclip straight into this hole and push it firmly, the drive tray will begin to eject. When it comes out far enough to grasp with your fingers, pull it out to extend it fully. Insert the disc and manually push the tray back in. Boot to disc by depressing the "c" key at startup and holding it down until the turning grey cog wheel appears.
To attempt to get the Mac to start, perhaps you should try completely de-energizing and resetting it. Try this, (just leave your hard drives disconnected):
Disconnect everything externally except the power cord.
Touch your finger to a metal slot cover on the back of the Mac as a static discharge precaution, then disconnect the power cord.
Remove the battery.
Depress and hold the front power button for a five-count.
Fully depress the PMU for a five-count.
Take a thirty-minute break to insure that the internal capacitors are completely discharged.
Reconnect the power cord, monitor, keyboard, and mouse, leaving the battery out.
Attempt startup to the install disc.
Any luck? If so, reinsert the battery, connect the hard drives and boot to disc, launching Disk Utility and running Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. Check the Startup Disk option in the Installer menubar to insure the OS X system on your startup drive is still selected. Then quit the Installer to restart normally to the hard drive. If successful, you can then check the preference files for sleep-wake problem that it seems you were having, if I understood correctly.
BTW - When you get stuck in a situation where the Mac won't respond and you have difficulty powering down, try to avoid pulling the power plug, which can corrupt your files and drive directory if the drive is writing data. Instead, try the restart button if you have to force a complete shutdown. If that fails to work after holding it in for a few seconds, then try the power button. If it still won't power down after holding in the power button, then release it and immediately depress the restart button, which usually works. Pull the power plug on a running Mac only as a last resort. In any event, after any sudden shutdown, it's prudent practice to initially boot back to your Tiger install disc and run Repair Disk on the startup volume. If it isn't handy, then boot to Safe Mode by depressing the shift key at the next startup, which will force a file system check of the startup volume, which is like running Repair Disk without being able to see the results. Another way is to boot to single-user mode (depress & hold cmd+"s" at startup) and run fsck, where you'll be able to see the results of the drive repair.

Power Mac G4 Quicksilver Won't Wake From Sleep

I have a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 933MHz that will not wake up after it goes to sleep. It is currently running OS X 10.3, has had its hard drive replaced, system reinstalled, and been DiskWarrior'd. Haven't tried replacing the PRAM battery yet but get no indication its dead (clock keeps time wen off). It always connected to an Apple 17" Cinema Display--could that be the source of the problem?

Third Party USB devices and USB PCI cards are notorious potential culprits for no wake from sleep issues so please follow japamac's lead and look at them as potential culprits. Disconnect the external peripherals and test sleep/wake. Swap a third party keyboard and/or mouse with your Apple one(s) and test. Remove any PCI cards, and test. (It's perhaps good practice to reset the PMU after you add or remove an internal component.)
A Cinema Display, especially one with a built-in USB port or hub problem, could create an issue, though it would more likely to be one of not sleeping, rather than not waking. You might quickly check your system log for possible indicators of USB issues with the Display, if you have reason to suspect that its ports may not be functioning properly.
Resetting NVRAM in Open Firmware sometimes resolves the issue. Resetting your PMU as japamac suggested will take care of the NVRAM reset for you.
If the above didn't resolve things, please continue on...
Corrupt Energy Saver preferences are sometimes the cause. Quit System Preferences if it's opened and navigate to /Library/Preferences/System Configuration (folder) and delete the following preference files:
com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
com.apple.AutoWake.plist
(The AutoWake plist file may or may not be present, depending on whether or not you have/had scheduled sleep settings.)
Then navigate to ~/Library/Preferences and delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist preference file. Restart and test sleep again.
If your battery is old, it's a good idea to just get a new one. The worst that can happen is that you'll have a spare when you need it. They're about $5 online. If you go to Radio Shack with the one you have, they'll test it for you. Alternately, put a voltmeter on it and insure that you're reading at least 3.3 volts DC. New ones read 3.6 - 3.9 volts.

Intel i5 processor upgrade? No way, no how with the OEM PPC board.
The "Latest" hardware that can be used with the original G4 motherboard is imited to used 7445/7447/7448 3rd party processor upgrades (all obsolete), PCI expansion, AGP graphics (only used as all are obsolete), new IDE drives (capacity support dependant on model year) and PC133 memory.
SATA and SSD can be used, but only with PCI SATA controllers or the specially configured IDE modded SSD from OWC.
PCI controllers will get you about SATA 1 data rates. The adapted SSD on IDE won't get beyond 60 MB/s.
You could use the case and put a mini ITX or micro ATX board in to support the i5. Of course you could then run Windows 7. If you want to run OS X, discussion ends here and begins your use of Google and searching for "x86" and "Hackintosh".

Sound Card for Power Mac G4 Quicksilver

I was having a look around for sound cards for the Power Mac G4 Quicksilver and read about the M-Audio Revolution 5.1 and 7.1. Are these the best sound cards available for the G4 Quicksilver? Are there better ones?

I've started using the iMic by Griffin. It's an USB stereo input/output audio adapter with both mic and line level input/ouput. They provide a free download of their audio editing software called Finyl Vinyl (I think), which lets you record and edit audio mainly (though you can input video with the adapter - need different software though). Though it's intended mainly for recording from turntables, you can input and edit most any audio with a mini plug to RCA jacks cable. I've used a cassette deck and a mini disc recorder so far. I haven't played much with the mic input so far, but the line in audio is very good (I've worked in community radio for a while now, so I have a pretty good ear). The adapter also works with other audio editing software like Audacity and Logic Express (possibly Garageband too, I haven't tried). And it's available for under $30 on places like eBay.

Compatible DVD-RW Drives - Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 733MHz

I am in the process of upgrading a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 733 MHz. Does anyone have a list of compatible DVD-RW drives? I want to replace the existing CD-RW drive so I can install Tiger from the DVD.
Also want to install a 3.5" Floppy Disk Drive, anyone know which models are compatible?

For the least problematic and most compatible brand DVD±RW drive for use in Macs, I'd recommend a Pioneer drive, like this one. You can use other brands (like NEC, Samsung, or LG), but bootability can be iffy from one brand to another. Some of the major names (like Sony) sell rebranded drives, so you never know what product you'll get from one model to another, even with the same "name" on it. You don't need to restrict your search to Mac dealers, because your G4 uses the same DVD±RW drive as PCs. A Mac dealer may include (third-party) Mac burning software, which the drives marketed for PCs won't include. As for a floppy drive, you'll have to settle for an external USB version. Unlike their PC counterparts, older Apple FDDs had a single ribbon cable that conveyed data and power. There isn't any means to connect one of these to the standard interfaces found in the B&W G3s and newer Macs. With the cost of USB flash drives now less than $10/GB, why do you want to install a FDD in your G4? Is it intended for temporary use, until you've copied the contents of older disks to another medium?

Buying a Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz Dual with a PPC 7450 Processor???

I just purchased but have not received as of yet a Power Mac G5 DP 1.8GHz Dual PCI-X 1 GB 160 GB. In the Details it is stated: "1.8 GHz DP PPC 7450 (G5) x2 RISC Processor."
A friend of mine mentioned that the PPC 7450 is a G4 processor but it might have been used in what is referred to as a G 4.5 PPC. That the true G5 processor should be a 970 fx processor!
Can someone quickly confirm one way or the other. The machine might ship to me tomorrow (Monday) and I will tell them not to ship if I have been misled.

If it's a Power Mac G5, then the description that it's a PPC 7450 is wrong (a G4). G5's are 970.
Since it is hard to mistake a G5 for a G4 Power Mac, and G4's did not have 1.8 GHz processors (unless it has a third party G4 upgrade) or PCI-X, it is likely that you are getting a Power Mac G5.
I've never heard of a "G4.5" description. Apple sold G4 Power Macs up to 1.42 GHz in the curvy plastic case, and then sold G5 Power Macs in the squarish aluminum case. You can't put a "G5" PPC in a G4 Power Mac, and you can't put a "G4" PPC in a G5 Power Mac.
But it wouldn't hurt to contact the seller to verify that it's a Power Mac G5 (huge aluminum case).

Chances are slim, though, that they would have them for a machine that old.
You can find retail disk sets for older OS X versions at places like HarcoreMac, but their prices aren't cheap. EBay and CraigsList are other possibilities.
Your G4 MDD dual 1.42GHz machine is termed the "Power Mac G4 (FW800)" model by Apple. It originally came with OS X 10.2.3. It's max OS is OS X 10.5.8, the one apparently on it now.
Since the machine is running OS X 10.5.8, you should probably seek a retail OS X 10.5.x (Leopard) version.

Power Mac - G4 QuickSilver and dial-up problem..

Hi all, first post here please excuse my naiviety!
As well as owning a Macbook I've been helping a friend out with their 9-10 yr old G4 Power Mac. The problem started with it not being able to power on so I tried resetting CUDA etc; that didn't work so I sourced a replacement Power Mac (power supply being impossible to replace).
All went well, swapped the HD out of his duff M5183 and put it into the newer QuickSilver. Booted-up fine and apart from running quicker it looked like his old Mac. When he tried dial-up (he can't get BB) he kept getting a no dial tone error. So I had a fiddle and managed to get a tone... however when the 0845 number was dialled all you get is a beep....beep....beep noise like the line's engaged or unobtainable. I managed to inadvertently wipe his ISP settings so tried another ISP (called freeisp, 0844 7110059) - still get the same reply on the line with this.
Question is, I'm guessing the modem on the QuickSilver is different to that on the M5183? Do I need to install drivers? The modem seems to dial out okay so I'm a bit confused.
Any help gratefully rec'd... he hasn't been able to get online for some time now.

Still, that invites further research to be sure; and also to
check what update or upgrade the computer hardware
may need to be ready for the demands of the OS on it.
Hardware upgrades in RAM chip & hard disk drives are
the primary ones for basic physical upgrade; and then
the OS X. And Panther is not really adequate today...
Tiger has support; Panther has increasingly more wants
that are not met and does not see updates. It's rather old.
You should check into the available "retail boxed" Tiger
full installer sets that have previously been sold to people
and now those persons have upgraded to Leopard 10.5.
These should be priced less than online reseller's retail.
In some places, the universal install DVD set is not costly
once you get away from the retail demand. Amazon is a
source of retail goods; ebay is a place to find retail prices.
Individuals, whose goods you would have to be aware of
before buying (or if given a retail box Tiger installer DVD,
be informed as to what you really had.) Be sure it is NOT a
version made for a single model or series of computer,
since those would only work in that one model line.
Without access to DSL or faster cable broadband, getting
all the update bits for the system would be prohibitive; no
matter the version of OSX (or any OS) it would be too slow.
You may be able to get copies of the correct downloads
from persons you know; but you have to be sure they are
the correct ones, and not versions for some other device.
(Some update files are for Intel-based Mac, not PPC-based.)
If you have a portable computer, a list of upgrade downloads
needed (for a needy desktop computer) and a place to go and
experience fast broadband or adequate DSL, the necessary
update files a new OS X installation would require to be up to
date could be gotten; they could be saved to a CD for later use.
The latest security update, all the java updates, the Combo update,
Quicktime, Flash player, Shockwave Player, modern browsers, &
other items are required to bring even Tiger up to today's web
and daily use if going online (or if using applications needing it.)
With a list of needed applications, and/or web sites where the
downloads could be acquired, and getting 'standalone' versions
for later use in a computer later, one can deal with a slow web
access point at home, by going elsewhere to get the essentials.
And to get them with the idea of making a backup archive for
later re-install should that event of necessity occur. The Apple
Support Downloads site has OS X related updates & is search-
able. So knowing file names to do this, that way, is important.
Having the subject computer at the point where high speed
internet is available makes all kinds of sense, to just update
the newer OS X version and make it work correctly.
And the need for this would become painfully clear to even
someone with no credible amount of experience. Anyone
with hopes of getting a task done in their lifetime could see it.

Problem starting Power Mac G4

I'm running the latest version of Tiger. An apple support professional told me not to install Leopard, that I would have problems, so Tiger it still is.
Every 2-3 months I have the same problem. When trying to start (or restart) I get the grey screen with the apple logo and it won't go further.
I can start in safe mode, but restarting after that doesn't go further than the Apple logo.
I removed all peripherals. Same thing.
I reset the PRAM. Same thing.
I was able to boot from the install disc and run Disc Utility. Same thing.
I used Tech Tool Pro 5 and Discwarrior, booting from the repair discs. Did all the tests in TTP5. Redid the directory thru both programs. Same thing.
I try to archive and install and although it goes thru the whole routine, same thing.
Several months ago I bought a brand new internal hard drive reinstalling everything fresh, and still, every 2-3 months the same thing.
The only thing that works is erasing the whole drive and reinstalling the operating system and all the programs from scratch.
This gets to be boring, doing it every 2-3 months!
Before I reinstall, luckily I am able to get access to the hard drive and back up all the important files and folders which weren't backed up previously.
I know the G4 is old by now (got it in 2001) but I can't afford a new computer right now.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

HT2699 Boot up problems on Power mac G5

I recently bought a second hand powermac G5, and it had a fresh install of os Tiger. When the machine booted up, it asked for a password. I contacted the person I bought the computer from and they had no idea what it was. I ended up using these support pages and somehow wiped the hard drive in Terminal. Ever since then all I get is the picture of a folder with a question mark.
I have a retail disc of Leopard, and I connected my Mac Pro via firewire to install it to the Power mac. It has installed it, and I can boot it up on my Mac Pro, but the actual Power Mac still won't boot up by itself - it still shows the folder and question mark. I've tried everything, including the following:-
- Booting from CD
- Booting from Terminal (can't even get into Terminal on start-up on Power Mac)
- Pressing the option key on start-up (just comes up with a refresh image and arrow pointing right, but noting happens - even with the CD inserted there's no other option)
- Running disc utility via firewire to verify PM hard drive, and it says the drive appears okay.
I've literally tried everything I can think of, but I'm open to any ideas other people may have.

I did this last night, and according to Finder, it's installed successfully. However, when I then try to boot up the Power Mac by itself it still displays the folder with the question mark. It seems like everything's there, but the computer doesn't know it.
I've tried pressing C to boot from the DVD, but nothing happens. This morning I reset the PRAM and the NVRAM. I also found a site where they give all the start-up key boot options, and I've tried these but to no avail. I've even unplugged the keyboard to see if that helps, but it doesn't.
It's almost like there's something missing in the coding, and I've booted it up in Open Firmware mode, but keep getting the message LOAD-SIZE is too small, when I try to boot up from the CD.
Any ideas?

Problem booting Power Mac G4 DA

Have a G4 PowerMac (DigitalAudio) and can't get it to boot. Here are the specs: G4,1.5Ghz,1GB RAM, MacOS 10.5.4, Superdrive, 6 HD's - 150GB(main),2 IDE 500GB+1 150BG on IDE card,2 SATA 160GB in IDE card, USB&Firewire expansion cards & ATI video card. All was working fine until after a power failure. Started not showing video;replaced the card but the problem is still there. Tested the monitor and cables with another computer and all is OK. Finally showed video, but then a message showed indicating I have to trun the computer off or restart (in gray screen after the wheel spiined for a few seconds. Stopped showing video again & the power button blinked 3 times. Went back to turning on with the restart message in the gray screen, but now shuts the computer off automatically. Flashed the PRAM and did a hard reset, re-started with the install discs and still the same problem. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Tried a new battery? Old Macs respond in all sorts of unexpected ways when the batteries are getting low. The power outage may have forced your computer to use the battery and pushed it over the edge.
If you have a digital multimeter you can check the condition of your present battery. It should read at least 3.2V if it is the 3.6V half-AA battery type. Ideally this should be measured while the battery is under load; added recommendation from Hans777:
I have recently found out that an exhausted battery will still indicate >3.6 V with a high internal resistance VM.
Checking incircuit: powercord disconnected press PMU reset button for >about 5 sec before measuring.
Checking outside: load the battery with a 1500 Ohm resistor when measuring.

Strange Problems with Power Mac G5 - Shutdown, Date/Time, Mobile Me

Hello All,
Need some help resolving recent issues with my Dual 1.8 GHz g5 (PPC).
I recently had my internal boot drive start falling, so I had it cloned onto a brand new drive. Did not reinstal system (do not have access to m original installers). Since then have been experiencing the following issues:
On starup, the auto update of date/time does not work. An error message pops up stating date is set to before 2001. If it doesn't fix itself in the first 30 seconds (sometimes it does) I go to sys prefs/date & time and wait a few seconds and it then updates correctly.
When I shutdown the computer doesn't make it all the way. It successfully shuts down the OS... screen goes blue to black as normal... but the actual machine stays on unless I keep the power button pressed to force it to shut down. If I don't the computer stays on (black screen... but the hardware still on, as if it were asleep) and then the fans go into overdrive within about five minutes.
Startup is long and goes right into aforementioned date/time issue.
Lastly, I noticed mobile me is not updating my iCal between this mac and my new MacBook pro. It used to work until all this started happening.
Otherwise the computer runs fine, no strange behavior in any applications, OS, etc.
Have not replaced internal G5 battey, so I will explore that. Any other ideas what might be going on?

Probably the battery. The time being reset is a typical sign. Replace it before any more troubleshooting.
Check out things in Texas Mac Man's Battery, PRAM, PMU tutorial on the subject. His tutorial is dated (don't believe it even mentions G5's) but the info in it, except SMU not being included, still applies to most Macs. The SMU link is for a late G5 Tower. Early G5's use PMU reset, as shown in the tutorial. The battery for late G5 + G5 iMacs and earlier iMacs, Mac Minis and Intel Tower Macs is this one.
The clone could be an issue too, if it was made from a drive that was already having issues. Do the battery and we'll see what happens!

Power mac G4 silver 2002 - very noisy

Could be everything, very noisy. To be honest is a nightmare to do anything for more than 10 minutes.
Can I reduce the db doing something?

Sorry to hear your Quicksilver is misbehaving.
Hold your hand to the metal surrounding the fan - both the case fan and the power supply and see if you can pick up a vibration. Holding a long, thin screwdriver - which acts as a stethoscope - will also work (as long as you don't drop it into the fan).
Dual processor QSs tend to run hot, which is not conducive to long life of power supplies. I fitted a slightly more powerful (and noisier) CPU fan by Evercool - EC6025H12CA - which keeps the CPU cooler and I presume the power supply, too. A slot fan might help, too, though I haven't tried it yet.
Good luck with the Quicksilver; I really like mine and have talked a half-dozen friends into what seems like a QS club.

Power Mac G4 Quicksilver as NAS

So I've had a G4 867 for a couple of years that I've been running headless, basically as a poorly configured and overpowered NAS host. I've got HDD from my previous G4 Cube and other machines tucked into the tower and they hold my wife's iTunes library, our iPhoto library and other things.
One issue with this machine is that none of the four drives are bigger than 80GB, and I would like to get some bigger drives to consolidate things, and provide a Time Machine backup location for my wife's MacBook that her school district gave her.
My questions are: is the better choice to find some PATA drives (250 or 320) and use those, or to buy an SATA card and get that kind of drive? I know neither format is cheap these days, but I don't want to lose our 6000+ photos and days of music files. Second, do I need to be running Mac OS 10.5.8 on this beast, or should I be running MacOS Server of some flavor for an NAS application, or something else entirely?
I did recently have one of my employees give me a Windows machine that "wasn't working" and I was going to uuse FreeNAS on it, but I'm going to give it to my parents instead (they're Windows users... <shudder>)...

Is that a QS/867 or an MDD/867?
The QS/2001 can only natively/officially use 128 GB drives.
Can officially support two Ultra ATA/66 hard drives on the original bus (more drives can be supported with a third-party controller PCI card). Officially, drives larger than 128 GB are not supported. However, third-parties have discovered that this system will natively support hard drives larger than 128 GB, when running MacOS X 10.2 or higher. Ultra ATA/100 hard drives are backwards compatible with the Ultra ATA/66 standard.
