  • Lost access to Jam Pack instruments after migration to new macbook pro

    I just migrated to a Macbook Pro and now all the instruments from my Symphony Orchestra Jam Pack are no longer available. I was also getting a message "Native Instruments Installation Folder not found" but after copying the instrument files into the Sampler Instruments from my old macbook to the new one, that went away, but I still don't have access in Finale to those instruments.
    There's still no "Native Instruments Installation Folder" that I know of, but the message no longer appears.
    Are these instruments no longer available in the new Garageband? This is a bit frustrating.

    I FIXED IT!!! After AppleCare told me it couldn't be done...
    I've been searching for hours online and couldn't find this anywhere, so hopefully someone with this challenge will stumble upon this.
    A clue was here: http://www.techvide.com/apple/install-jam-pack-on-mac-os-x-lion
    but this didn't correctly describe my issue with an early version of Jam Pack 4: Symphony Orchestra
    What I did:
    1. Insert Jam Pack DVD 1
    2. ctrl-click Install Jam Pack 4 - Show original
    3. double-click JamPack4_Instruments.pkg
    4. You'll get some Power-PC Not Compatible with Lion warnings (only a few compared with the almost infinite number if you try standard install)
    Instruments now appear and work just fine in garageband. <big sigh>
    I wish AppleCare would know this, and I hope someone is planning on continuing supporting these Garageband instruments.

  • Help with 'disappeared' photos after migration to new macbook pro

    So I got a lovely new macbook pro and successfully seem to have migrated everything from my old G4 powerbook. But, when I go into iphoto all 3,000 plus pictures have only the slash dotted outline and no images. Any suggestions as how to remedy this. Terence Devlin, you were kind enough to try to help me when I was having trouble with getting my pictures to export edited but we never did figure out the problem, so if you're out there and remember me maybe you can advise me here, as I don't know if anything I did in attempting to resolve that issue would impact the situation now. The pictures still exist on the other computer so it's nothing dire but it's weird to have everything look like it's there (in otherwords, the whole thing is set up exactly as my old one was, with the same albums etc.) but no actual pictures inside.... Thank you!!

    To anwser my own question:
    Had to highlight my User Home in finder, and then had to add myself as a user (and click the cogwheel to apply to all files within) and allow myself to 'Read and Write' in permissions.
    For some reason, when I migrated across, it didn't add me as a user - even though I was the administrator of both the old and the new MBP!

  • Time Machine won't start after migration to new MacBook Pro.

    I upgraded to a new MacBook Pro.  Both machines are running OS X 10 (10.7.5 on old, 10.8.2 on new).  I used an ethernet cable for the data migration.
    I'm trying to use the Time Capsule we've been using all along for Time Machine, but Time Machine won't start because there's only 5.1GB free on the device and it wants to run a full backup. "The backup is too large for the backup disk.  The backup requires 252.33 GB but only 5.07 GB are available."
    What are my options?  I'd hate to lose prior versions of all the data I've moved to the new machine, but if I have to, then I have to.  But then I'm not sure how to access the Time Capsulre base as a non-backup drive and delete what's there.
    Thanks for yor help.
    Vince

    Windows in VM is going to know it's on a different machine, so you'll still have to hop through Microsoft's hoops or you won't get updates.
    Just an FYI: when moving a Fusion virtual machine, the first time you run the virtual machine, you are prompted if you "moved it" or "copied it".  Selecting "moved it" will retain the UUID and prevent Windows from prompting for reactivation.  (However, if it is a copy of the virtual machine and you wanted to run both copies simultaneously on the same network, you must select "copied it" otherwise the copies can't run at the same time.)
    If one did select "copied it" accidentally, then just follow the reactivation prompts.  As long as you're not reactivating a lot then it usually will work the normal way over the internet.  Even if you're forced to call, just tell the support rep that you're reinstalling Windows and type in the really long code that they say.  The few times I've had to call, it was less than 15 minutes.  Again, as long as you're not reactivating a lot (so looking suspiciously like a pirate,) reactivation is a pain, but relatively quick.

  • After migrating to new Macbook Pro, Photoshop and Bridge constantly Version Cue Crash

    I just upgraded to the new MacBook Pro and CS4 crashes any time I try to open a file. "Fatal error - missing component /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Version Cue CS4/Client/4.0.0/VersionCue.framework"  I've read that the best thing to do for that error is to uninstall and reinstall, but my new machine does not have an optical drive, so my old disks don't help much.  Also, I bought CS4 during a limited offer for upgrades to CS1, so I had to call technical support to get it activated, so even if I did manage to reinstall (perhaps by copying my install disks to a USB drive?) I'm expecting to have trouble with reactivating.  Any advice before I start tinkering?

    Thanks!  I deactivated it from both the old and new computers, followed the instructions here to copy the install files and it all just worked.
    Strangely enough, it did not ask me to reactivate after reinstalling.  It's just working.  It doesn't seem to be upadating properly (I run update, and it comes up with the same 9 updates I just downloaded and applied) but I'll probably be upgrading to CS6 or creative cloud before year's end, so this will do for now.
    Thanks again!

  • License not working after migrating to new MacBook Pro

    I migrated recently to a new MacBook Pro. Aperture is finding it hard to recognize my license from earlier MacBook Pro
    Aperture license shows blank. Asks for license. Does not accept my Aperture 2 or 3 license.
    Do I have to ?
    * Backup my data
    * Uninstall Aperture 3 that was migrated
    * Install Aperture 2 again
    * Put license
    * Apply Aperture 3 upgrade again
    * Open photo libraries to check compatibility
    Any recommended way of handling the license recognition with least hassle?
    Last working setup
    * MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.1 GHz
    * Snow Leopard 10.6.4
    * Aperture 2
    * Aperture 3 upgrade applied to Aperture 2
    Now
    * MacBook Pro i5 2.4GHz
    * Snow Leopard 10.6.4
    * Aperture 3 (Migrated from MBP2.1Ghz)
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Tony Gay wrote:
    Migrating a Pro application will not work, you need to delete the Aperture application, only the ap, from your MBP, and do an install from the supplied disc or download, this should then take you serial number.
    Tony
    I keep reading people state this, but I've migrated a bunch of times since first getting Aperture 1 (or whatever Apple called it). I just did a migration from a 15" MBP (Early 2009) to a brand spanking new 17" MBP i7. Aperture 2 is working perfectly. I'm not bragging or anything, because if something is going to go wrong, it will go wrong with me. Yet, I haven't had any issues with any migration and "Pro apps" including moving iMacs to iMacs, iMacs to MBP, MBP to iMacs, etc etc.
    Now I'm paranoid that Aperture is going to blow up on me next week!

  • I can't find my data after migrating to new MacBook Pro

    I just finished migrating data from an older model MacBook Pro to a newer one both using OS 10.9.5. After the migration I can no longer see or access my backups on Time Capsule. It may be a permission problem. Any suggestions?

    After the migration I can no longer see or access my backups on Time Capsule.
    You have a new Mac. Have you been backing up the "new" Mac?  If not, that Mac has no backups...yet.
    You do have backups of your other "older" MacBook Pro though.
    You cannot "add on" or "continue" backups of the new Mac onto backups of the older Mac.
    If you want to see the backups of your "older" Mac.......right-click or try control-click or option-click the Time Machine icon on the dock and select Browse Other Time Machine Disks

  • Mail not opening after migration to new macbook pro

    Hello all,
    I recently transferred all of my files using migration assistant from a powerbook G4 to a Macbook Pro and now mail will not open. It will show up in the bar underneath the screen but it won't display anything and it won't quit. Anyone have any solutions?

    Without having to mess with plists, or messing with other arcane buried folders, this solution for me in migrating from a G4 to a Mini.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8843200&#8843200
    Simple. Move the ~/Library/Mail folder out and back in. Read the thread for the specific order. It's easy and save me tons of heartache.

  • After buying a new Macbook pro and opening an iTunes Match account most of my music is grayed out on my Mac and iPhone. I have not turned on iTunes match on my iPad and all my music is fine.  How do I get my music back????

    After buying a new Macbook pro and opening an iTunes Match account most of my music is grayed out on my Mac and iPhone. I have not turned on iTunes match on my iPad and all my music is fine.  How do I get my music back????

    The most efficacious way to get your music and other personal data onto your new Mac is to restore it from the backup you made of your old computer. Once that is done you can re-enable iTM on the new Mac and your iPhone.

  • Can't migrate to new MacBook Pro

    Hi,
    I have just brought home my new MacBook Pro, running 10.8.  I can't migrate my stuff from my MacBook, which is running 10.8.2 - neither computer sees each other via wifi or ethernet cable.  I have also discovered that my external hard drive with my backups on it is corrupted. I tried downloading the latest software update - it appeared to download, then I got the spinning wheel in the corner of the update window for awhile then nothing.  I restarted the Pro & clicked on software update and it didn't install it.   I have read that a few people are having trouble installing the latest update on 2012 computers.
    Any ideas gratefully accepted, thanks.

    Step by step:
    1) Your old MB is running a newer OS X version than the new MBP. After migrating, you might discover some incompatibilties, e.g. the iPhoto library not opening on the new MBP, et al.
    2) Probably you can't update the new MBP yet because for some new models the presently available updates don't apply, and it's unknown when one for you will be available. Just be patient.
    3) In any case, and before migrating, you should have a proper fresh backup of your old MB. See that you fix the external drive (re-format with Disk Utility, then create new, full backup with Time Machine, verify it works).
    4a) Once that's done, you may use that external drive to migrate from. Back to point 1) here...
    4b) You should be able to migrate from one Mac to another, too, if they have a proper connection. Guess your network settings were wrong when you tried. Warning: WiFi is slow and might take forever.
    All about Migration Assistant.

  • Migrate to new Macbook Pro

    I am going to be migrating from an older macbook pro to an newer macbook pro. Which is the best way to migrate 1) from mac to mac or 2) via time machine backup? Thanks

    When you get the new Mac (you wrote "will be getting..." so I assume you don't have it yet), the "out of the box experience" when you first boot will offer to do the migration for you -- and it'll invoke Migration Assistant to do this. It's actually a little less confusing if you the migration right at this time (rather than continue without restoring and then manually running Migration Assistant later). This is because Migration Assistant wont let you restore an account if an account with the same name already exists.... meaning if you type in your same firstname / lastname and let it make an account with the same name, THEN try to run Migration Assistant, it wont restore your own files to your account because an account with the same name already exists (it will block the restore if either the accounts "short name" matches OR if the full name (first & last) are identical. If you do the restore when the out-of-the-box experience prompts for it no account will have been created yet and you wont have this problem. (if you DO choose to do it later, then just create a temporary account on the new Mac so you wont have an account name collision. You can delete the temporary account after you complete the migration.)
    "Migration Assistant" does have an option to use the Time Machine drive as a source for your data.
    It's a smarter restore because it can create the user accounts, machine specific configuration (network settings, wireless networks, printers, etc.), as well as all your applications. This is considerably easier than trying to use the Time Machine interface to manually select everything you want to restore.
    If you do a machine-to-machine restore (with the old Mac booting in "target firewire mode") then you'll have no use of either computer until the restore is complete. If you do a restore from a bootable backup drive (the sort of thing you could create with a utility such as 'SuperDuper') or a TimeMachine backup volume then you wont have both machines tied up. Depending on how much data you have to restore, it could take a few hours.

  • Extremely Slow System when Compiling - New Macbook Pro

    Hello,
    I am having numerous problems with the newest Macbook Pro 13 inch (16GB RAM i7) when compiling programs in the terminal. Every time I start a process whether it is compiling a file / installing a program etc the terminal window and other application freeze. It is important to note that I have an older macbook pro which does not suffer from this issue. In order to check whether it could have been an issue with the software/compiler/library version installed I reinstalled the same version of OS Mavericks from scratch on both laptops and did not install any  additional software and or anything which did not come directly from apple. The issue is still there and no matter what the terminal freezes on the newer macbook pro.
    Does anyone have any suggestion?
    Thanks
    John

    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
    Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
    If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
    The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
    If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

  • IBook G4 migration to new MacBook Pro

    We are replacing my wife's old iBook G4 (OS X 10.5.8 with Power PC processor) with a new MacBook Pro.  Some questions:
    1. Is migration of the her files (especially her MS Office files, Thunderbird email files, and Firefox bookmarks), compatible software, preferences and info from the old iBook to the new MacBook Pro a problem?
    2. Are there any software issues other than probable incompatibility from Power PC versions to Intel versions?
    3. Is migration something I can do at home (as I have from an older MacBook Pro to my new one: connect the two with an ethernet cable and choose "migrate") or should we spend the $99.00 and 2-3 days without a computer and let the Apple Store do it (because of concerns about the Power PC processor to the Intel processor)?
    4.  She's been using an old version of Extensis Suitcase (X1) as her font management program.  Is this a potential problem?  (FYI, I use Suitcase Fusion 2)
    5. The new computer will have Mountain Lion and I use Lion.  Are there significant differences between the two that we should be aware of in advance?
    I realize that most of her old software won't be compatible, and, for example, I already have a multiple license version of MS Office 2011 to replace her old version of Office which I know is incompatible.  My greater concern again is the potential for any data loss (especially her MS Office files, Thunderbird email files, and Firefox bookmarks) if I do the migration instead of having Apple Store do it...and yes, I'll back up everything on her old computer in either case!
    Thanks in advance for any replies, and I sincerely apologize for the long post!

    " I assume that means the purchase of a different Firewire cable is necessary?"
    Use six-pin (FireWire 400) to eight-pin (FireWire 800) FireWire cable

  • Selective Migration to new MacBook Pro?

    Hey all,
    I poked around the discussion boards and didn't see this specific issue addressed. I just bought a new MacBook Pro (NMBP) to replace an older MacBook Pro (OMBP). The old one has been having issues that have gotten progressively worse but it's still running. I am fairly certain it is hardware related but, since it may be software issues, I'd prefer not to pull everything over using the Migration Assistant.
    Both machines are running OS X 10.8.5 with all the latest updates. I have been running Time Machine relgiously as well.
    Is it possible to do selectively pull files over? Specifically I want to pull over:
    Mail - I have lots of archived emails on OMBP that I need access to. Plus I have 6 email accounts (iCloud, Gmail, hosted on my website) that would be a pain to configure again. How would y'all do that?
    iTunes - I'm a music freak, there are lots of files. Can I just drag the music folder over?
    iPhoto - I'm guessing this will be easier than iTunes since there none of the DRM issues but I may be full of &^%$
    Quicken - yeah, it ***** on Mac but I use it to manage my mother's  finances. There are a lot of things I really don't want to lose.
    I have a Firewire cable and can set up OMBP as a Target disk. How would y'all solve this?
    Thanks in advance!

    For your itunes media, you can also just drag the music folder (or any other folder) to an exteral drive to copy it
