Statistics in Appleworks

Hello,
I am doing some work in statistics for a science class at my university. Is there some way to tell the spreadsheet program to put a "best-fit line" on a plot of data points?
I have looked through the function list and I haven't found anything. Currently, I am doing this through my graphing calculator, but I would rather do everything all in one place.
All the examples in my lab manual are done in Excel but I figure that AppleWorks is probably similar enough that I can get away with using AppleWorks.
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
-Rolf

AppleWorks can't do this natively, although I think there is an enhancement pack available at the AppleWorks Users Group that includes this capability. You might also check VersionTracker for an application named "Regress+" that is specifically made for such an application. Just import the graph into your AW document.

  • Can "Numbers" Help Me Compile Sports Statistics?

I'm looking for a Macintosh program that will allow me to compile a lot of data, and then organize it by various search terms. I'm not sure if I need a spreadsheet or a database. (I'm very handy with computers, but have never worked with spreadsheets or databases much.)
I'm compiling statistics for the poker industry. I need to list all of the tournament results for each player (probably about 10,000, but maybe up to 25,000). For each listing, I need the date, the name of the tournament, the casino, the city, the place they finished, and how much money they made. Then, for the players themselves, I need some information on them as well -- what city or country they're from, contact information, age, etc.
I would then like to be able to search this data with specific criteria. For example, "Which player won the most money between July, 2005 and April, 2007? Which American player has earned the most money at tournaments outside of the United States? Things like that.
Is Numbers capable of this, or do I need a more robust spreadsheet program? Or am I barking up the wrong tree altogether? Will I need to learn how to program a database? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, I don't need to share access to this information over the Web or with other computers. I just need to store it locally on my MacBook, add data several times a week, and perform searches whenever necessary.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Given my experience, I would use AppleWorks 's database component but I refuse to push a newbie to use a "frozen" program.
I will not use Numbers, at least in version 1 (but as I don't know what will offer the next version, I have no advice about it).
As I dislike Bento, I will not push you to use it.
So, for someone which is new to data crunching, at this time, I will name: FileMaker even if the learning curve will be important.

  • Appleworks:  bounces once, and stops!

I have read several of the posts about Appleworks and this problem (see below) and have managed to confuse myself about trashing preferences, plists, etc.
From the suggestions quoted below the crash log, will someone point out the correct order to try the solutions? Or other remedies for Appleworks refusing to start after it crashes. It just bounces once, and stops. The crash log reads thusly:
Oct 20 09:10:40 power-mac-g4-agp-graphics cp: error processing extended attributes: Operation not permitted
    Oct 20 09:34:54 power-mac-g4-agp-graphics kernel[0]: (63: coreservicesd)tfp: failed on 0:
    Oct 20 11:52:19 power-mac-g4-agp-graphics crashdump[1783]: crash report written to: /Users/name/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/AppleWorks 6.crash.log
    Advice:
"The best, first step in trouble-shooting a misbehaving application is to delete its preference files. Preference files often become corrupted through no fault of the user - it just happens. Although it sounds scary or drastic to do this, it can only help the application. When any application is launched, it looks for its preference files. If it doesn't find any (just like the very first time you started AppleWorks) it will build new ones.
First, quit AppleWorks if it is running. In all instances, you don't want to trash the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bar. You will need to reset any preferences you had changed, but AppleWorks' preferences are simple.
•In OS X you want to move the AppleWorks preferences found in HD/Users/username/Library/Preferences/AppleWorks & the com.apple.appleworks.plist found in ~/Library/Preferences/ to the Trash, then empty the Trash & restart AppleWorks."
    --OR--
"1. Open your Applications folder, and then the AppleWorks folder. You should see the AppleWorks icon and several "supporting folders" (AppleWorks Essentials, AppleWorks Extras, Starting Points, etc.)
    2. Control + Click on the AppleWorks icon and select "Show Package Contents"
    3. Double-click to open the Contents folder. Here's where the problem is.
4 You should see 3 folders and files. The folders should be named MacOS, MacOSClassic and Resources. In all the incidents I've seen, the "MacOS" folder has somehow been renamed with some long obscure cache-like number. Rename this folder MacOS (be sure to type it exactly like this, no space)
    5. Close the Contents folder and Package folder and try to launch Appleworks.
    6. Smile!"
Unfortunately I may or may not be able to put my hands on the Appleworks disc as I recently rearranged my space.
    Thank you.
    Sheila

Dale, are you hinting you’d look over the entire log? I’ll post it below.
I’d like to make clear I didn't do anything. I am not computer savvy enough to try to fix my computer beyond restart and verify permissions.
When I went to another account and logged back into my account, Appleworks worked in my account.
Something else; my speakers failed yesterday. When I came back to my account they worked again.
My Canon ran out of photo ink which seemed to set up some type of system alarm, even though I had no warning ink was running low.
My mini is on 24/7 and I have the ultimate so it has all the room it needs to fix what I do wrong. I grew up with Fortran, keypunch cards and typewriters
Thanks again for your expert advice.

  • How can I convert the old AppleWorks files into a modern useable format?

I've been using Mac computers for many years. The most important application (to me) was AppleWorks. But now I have learned that if I upgrade
to Lion all my Appleworks files will be lost.  I have searched in many places for the "How to convert AppleWorks files to some format that WILL
be supported by Apple.  I see no information on the Apple website and when I speak to a support person, I am always told that AppleWorks is
so very old, it was not included in their training so they cannot tell me anything.  The little bits of advice I did get caused all my 20,000 AppleWorks
files to be moved into my LaCie terrabyte external storage file, and at the same time the old files remain in my Macintosh Hard Drive. But in both
places, those files cannot be read any more, and the nicely organized work I had done, was all gone. I mean - my AppleWorks files were always
grouped by folders into special interest sections.  Now those folders don't exist and everything is in disarray - and unreadable. The titles of each
file is now greyed out.  I have tried
to make the transfer in Bento3 but mostly in iWork06.  I was told by Apple staff NOT to buy a higher iWork such as 09 because they are too
far removed from the old AppleWorks to be able to do anything with it.  So I've stuck to iWork06 with no success.  Also, I went to my favorite
privately owned Apples store and found all their instruction manuals and DVD application files MISSING. Their shelves are empty. I was told
the new way is to order off the internet but....I'd far rather go into a shop and see all they offer for sale.  If I had gone there to buy ONE item,
I'd drive away with THREE items, because getting my hands on items was the important way to understand what the value and purpose
    of that item is.
To summarize: I have installed iWorks06 with no written information about it.  I have iWork08 with an instruction book which never never
mentions AppleWorks, so I have not installed iWork08.  I have Bento3 installed, but no instruction book.  So I haven't learned or tried anything
because it too never speaks of AppleWorks transfer.  Some of my AppleWorks files are extremely important to me. Not just personal or
social but BUSINESS!  I won't be able to answer the tax man should he come a-knocking on my door.   HELP!!

So what kinds of files are they? Word processing docs, from the painting Appleworks app, or spreadsheets?
This is how I've handled it:
Anything word processing: should be able to import them (drag them in or import) into Pages. Worked here.
Spreadsheets: Used File > Open to open an AW spreadsheet. Needs a few adjustments, but I was able to tailor Numbers to get my spreadsheets the way I wanted them. Just experimented for a while with a non-essential spreadsheet until I figured out what to do.
Painting: That is the one I used the most (and continue to do so): Cannot be read by any iWork. If your doc is a finished product, simply save it as a .pdf or .jpg and then you can drag it into Pages. If it is not, then you are out of luck. I am keeping a partition with a bootable Snow Leopard system with Appleworks on it in order to be able to keep creating my stuff because I've not been able to find a somewhat equal substitute.
So, keeping SL on a partition and/or an external drive is one option if necessary.

  • How can I import my old Appleworks spreadsheets into Neo Office or Pages

I am a new MBP owner and have some spreadsheets in Appleworks from my old iMac. I don't have Appleworks on my new MBP. I have downloaded Neo Office and could use it to create a new spreadsheet but can't import my previously created ones. Must I retype then? Or...as an alternative, I have iWorks. Can I import them into Pages? How? Thanks for any help.

The above suggestion didn't work for me. However, I did find this site that helped me--and it might help someone else:
    http://neowiki.neooffice.org/index.php/OpeningAppleWorksdocuments
It worked for spreadsheet--now I have to try to convert a data base document in Appleworks.

  • Statistics Currency Error while posting Sales Order (No: V1453)

    Hi Sappers,
I am in process of making a company in SAP ERP SD - IDES, and while posting Sales Order, after I input Sold to Party, PO no, Del Plant and Incoterms and I press ENTER: The error comes up as:
Statistics: The currency from in INR for date 25.11.2011 could not be determined.
    Kindly suggest a possible solution.
    Thanks
    Rahul Tikku

    Hi,
Just go to "OBD2", select the Accounts group of your customer and "Double Click" on it, then "Double  cliick" on "Sales Data" > Further goto,  "Sales" and check if "Currency" field is suppressed. if so then change it to required or optional Entry. save and update you customer master in XD02. Then try your process.

  • Is it possible that a document (in this case an Appleworks or Movie Magic Screenwriter) can be lost forever, but it's contents somehow remain as other file types elsewhere? I have an old hard drive and I need to locate the contents of these files.

I have a 20 gig hard drive from a 2001 iBook. When my iBook crashed back in '04, there was a screenplay on there that was not saved anywhere else. It has tremendous sentimental value to me, and I would really like to retrieve it. I've ran some data recovery software that's uncovered a gargantuan amount of data, most of it being completely unreadable to me.
Additionally, I have found an AppleWorks file that could be the script, but it is ZERO bytes in size, and Pages won't even open it, saying that it is not a valid AppleWorks file.
So I'm curious...is it possible that the document is lost, but somehow the contents of it are somewhere else on the drive as metadata in other unreadable formats. And if that's the case, how would I go about translating the unreadable data back into something that IS readable?

    Hello,
    toddisalive wrote:

if the size of this file is really ZERO bytes, either the original file contained an empty data fork and a resource fork which was stored elsewhere (*) or the file is too damaged to retrieve anything. Moreover, as AppleWorks never generates file with empty data fork, at least to my knowledge, ....
Concerning the Movie Magic ScreenWriter files, the application seems to exist for Yosemite http://www.write-bros.com/movie-magic-screenwriter.html ( but it seems "expensive"  and I do not know if it accepts to import old files )....
(*) maybe in .TOTO or __MACOSX/.TOTO if the filename is TOTO

  • Does appleworks come with my MacBook?

I'm a little confused, I thought appleworks came with my macbook, but it's not on here. only the microsoft office test drive which is expired and notebook. But on my parents imac they have appleworks..what happened?

    Hi
You could always purchase the Appleworks 6.2.9 CD from Amazon. Apple are more interested in developing Pages (iWork). I, personally, use NeoOffice.

  • How oracle decide whetehr to use index or full scan (statistics)

    Hi Guys,
Let say i have a index on a column.
The table and index statistics has been gathered. (without histograms).
    Let say i perform a select * from table where a=5;
Oracle will perform a full scan.
But from which statistics it will be able to know indeed most of the column = 5? (histograms not used)
After analyzing, we get the below:
    Table Statistics :
    (NUM_ROWS)
    (BLOCKS)
    (EMPTY_BLOCKS)
    (AVG_SPACE)
    (CHAIN_COUNT)
    (AVG_ROW_LEN)
    Index Statistics :
    (BLEVEL)
    (LEAF_BLOCKS)
    (DISTINCT_KEYS)
    (AVG_LEAF_BLOCKS_PER_KEY)
    (AVG_DATA_BLOCKS_PER_KEY)
    (CLUSTERING_FACTOR)
    thanks
    Index Column (A)
    ======
    1
    1
    2
    2
    5
    5
    5
    5
    5
    5

I have prepared some explanation and have not noticed that the topic has been marked as answered.
This my sentence is not completely true.
A column "without histograms" means that the column has only one bucket. More correct: even without histograms there are data in dba_tab_histograms which we can consider as one bucket for whole column. In fact these data are retrieved from hist_head$, not from histgrm$ as usual buckets.
Technically there is no any buckets without gathered histograms.
Let's create a table with skewed data distribution.
    SQL> create table t as
2  select least(rownum,3) as val, '*' as pad
      3    from dual
      4  connect by level <= 1000000;
    Table created
    SQL> create index idx on t(val);
    Index created
    SQL> select val, count(*)
      2    from t
      3   group by val;
           VAL   COUNT(*)
             1          1
             2          1
3     999998So, we have table with very skewed data distribution.
    Let's gather statistics without histograms.
    SQL> exec dbms_stats.gather_table_stats( user, 'T', estimate_percent => 100, method_opt => 'for all columns size 1', cascade => true);
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed
    SQL> select blocks, num_rows  from dba_tab_statistics
      2   where table_name = 'T';
        BLOCKS   NUM_ROWS
          3106    1000000
    SQL> select blevel, leaf_blocks, clustering_factor
      2    from dba_ind_statistics t
      3   where table_name = 'T'
      4     and index_name = 'IDX';
        BLEVEL LEAF_BLOCKS CLUSTERING_FACTOR
             2        4017              3107
    SQL> select column_name,
      2         num_distinct,
      3         density,
      4         num_nulls,
      5         low_value,
      6         high_value
      7    from dba_tab_col_statistics
      8   where table_name = 'T'
      9     and column_name = 'VAL';
    COLUMN_NAME  NUM_DISTINCT    DENSITY  NUM_NULLS      LOW_VALUE      HIGH_VALUE
VAL                     3 0,33333333          0           C102            C104So, Oracle suggests that values between 1 and 3 (raw C102 and C104) are distributed uniform and the density of the distribution is 0.33.
    Let's try to explain plan
    SQL> explain plan for
      2  select --+ no_cpu_costing
      3         *
      4    from t
      5   where val = 1

I have disabled cpu costing, so selectivity does not affect the cost of FTS.
cost of Index Range Scan is calculated as
    blevel + (leaf_blocks * selectivity + clustering_factor * selecivity) = 2 + (4017*0.33333 + 3107*0.33333) = 2377.
Oracle considers that it has to read 2 root/branch blocks of the index, 1339 leaf blocks of the index and 1036 blocks of the table.
Pay attention that selectivity is the major component of the cost of the Index Range Scan.
    Let's try to gather histograms:
    SQL> exec dbms_stats.gather_table_stats( user, 'T', estimate_percent => 100, method_opt => 'for columns val size 3', cascade => true);

3         1000000ENDPOINT_VALUE is the column value (in number for any type of data) and ENDPOINT_NUMBER is cumulative number of rows.

  • Forms 6.0 - how to have forms utilization statistics?

I would like to know how i can retrieve statistics of form utilization during one period without recompile any form. I wanna know for instance the 20 forms more used on a Oracle Forms 6.0 app. Is it possible?
    thanks
    Luis Reis

    Frank
thanks for your answer but the problem is that one . I have 800 forms and we have no time to open all them and make this script ( I am a CIO and not a tech guy so I presume that you are saying that we must write code in the Form, no?)

I have a requirement to upload data from excel sheet to ztable .
Here i need tp provide the user with the execution statistics like
1.Number of records read from the Excel spread-sheet
    2. Number records processed successfully
    3. Number records with Error
    4. Name and location of Error Log-file (text-file format)

  • UCCE 8.5.3/8.5.4 call volume statistics not matching in interval tables

    hello,
We have just migrated a call center to UCCE 8.5.3 that runs roggers and ICM call flow scripts that contain very basic flows. In each flow there is basically a one-to-one ratio of call type elements to select skill group elements.
Generally you would expect the call volume (as our scripts are written) to have almost the same call volume in the call type interval table and the skill group interval table, with allowable differences because of RONAs, etc. But basically somewhat close.
In general this does work but after a reboot of the roggers (A and B sides) (logger down first, then router and reversed to start), the skill group interval data lags greatly from the call type interval data, meaning maybe 10% of the call type interval volume. We have learned that completely shutting down both A and B side and then briinging it back up in order from scratch seems to alleviate the problem (until the next restart). We cannot just leave the servers alone though due to company security patching policies.
Cisco TAC had recommended patching to UCCE 8.5.4 which we have recently done, but the probelm persists.
I was wondering if this data discrepancy has ever been seen by anyone else or if possibly some system config issue might be self-deating us? Rebooting the roggers leaves the phone system itself working just fine for the call centers, but the recording of statistics to the skill group interval table is greatly impacted with almost no recording of volume in relation to the call type interval (and for comparison, the call type skill group interval table as well).
We would generally not worry about it, but the workforce management vendor that takes its feed from UCCE only uses the skill group interval, which is basically reporting almost no volume in the mentioned scenarios.
If anyone can provide any information it would be most appreciated/
    Thanks.
    Greg

Thank you for the response. The time source check is a great idea. We ran into problems before when internal web service servers did not match the PGs (CTIOS service) and CTI provideed stats did not match.
We will continue to work through TAC, but I was just wondering if anyone else had seen this (as 8.5.4 sid not fix it) and if maybe it could have been something self-defeating in our system configuration or scripting. We did not immediately know this was happening until our 3rd party workforce management vendor made us aware.
    Thanks,
    Greg

  • Appleworks XTND Translator List error

When trying to insert a text file into the Appleworks 6.22 database I receive the following error: "The translator "ASCIIT~1" couldn't be found. Please delete the file "XTND Translator List" from your preferences folder and re-launch AppleWorks."
I can't locate a preferences folder or the XTND Translator List. Where can I locate this so I can delete it? I've googled this and only find information on using Appleworks on a MAC. Also, is there another way of correcting this error?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
XTND translators were used in previous versions of AppleWorks & ClarisWorks but, AFIK, not in AppleWorks 6, either on a Mac or PC.
I wish I could be of help. I have never been able to find a preferences folder in Windows XP. A search of my installation of Windows XP in Parallels & a search of my Mac for XTND doesn't find any file with this name. If I get a chance later today, I will install AppleWorks 5 in Windows & see if I can locate this file.
FYI: Apple Macintosh computers are referred to as Mac (capital M, small a, small c), not MAC (which is an acronym for the Media Access Control address of a networking device).

  • How can we convince Apple to bring back AppleWorks?

I've been using OS 10.7 for a year and a half, and can only run AppleWorks on my old machine - once it gives up the ghost, I won't be able to use it at all. Numbers and Pages are adequate, but they don't have the ease of use and the flexibility of AppleWorks. Ditto for EZDraw (whose text function *****). AppleWorks is lean, efficient, multifaceted, and easy to use - for my money, it's one of the best apps that Apple has ever produced. I'd sure love to see it developed for 10.7 and beyond...

Roger: since we spoke last the Apple Store has started selling Snow Leopard Server at a 95% reduction in price - $19.99 + sales tax & shipping!  This allows for much easier installation into Parallels and VMWare Fusion (and some say VirtualBox, too) than originally described in my linked thread.
So, as noted in the first paragraph at that linked thread, you can obtain SLS from the Apple Store: 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only).
Here is Appleworks 6.2.9 running in Snow Leopard Server in Parallels 8 for use in Lion or Mt. Lion:
