Stopping and starting database in 10G OEM

Hello, has anyone run into an issue trying to stop and then start a database within the OEM console in 10G? We are able to stop and start the db with sql and windows services. We can stop the db in OEM but can't start it.

When you come to the startup/shutdown:confirmation page before actually starting up the db, does the Operation parameter say "startup database in open mode" or is it "... in mount mode"?

  • Stop and start databases

I need to shutdown all my databases (ifs_Data and OEMREP), because computer people are going to run periodically a process to backup them. But I cannot find how to stop and start my oracle databases by commands (I need to create a bat file). I am using Win2000, Oracle 9 and iFS 9.0.1
    Thanks for the suggestions,

This can be a procedure to shutdown a database:
    SET ORACLE_SID=<database_sid>
    sqlplus /nolog
    conn / as sysdba
    shutdown <option>;
    exit
<option> = Abort ( Not recommendable ), Immediate, transactional, normal.

  • Stop and start database for cold backup

    Hi,
    Database :Oracle 10g R1

I have a RAC database with 2 nodes.
I build this script to make a cold backup of the database. (I will put it in the cron tab).

I need to put a quick policy backup ... and cold
backup it's what I use and it works. And reduces the availability of your cluster.
The problem about RMAN is that we never use it. I
have to learn about it to make scripts to test....
and this will tack me 2 or 3 days...I'd assume that installing RAC didn't go overnight, so why underfund the crucial part of any database system, the backup?
There's even a step by step guide for backup on the Getting Started: DBAs page.
Samples (and changes) on the latest version of RMAN can be found for example in RMAN Enhancements.
Or take a look at this Oracle Magazine article:Faster Backup, Faster Recovery
Backup and Recovery Basics in the user documentation may also be a good starting point.

  • How to stop and start RAC Database

    Hi,
Can anybody tell me How to stop and start RAC Database.
Pls give me the exact procedure for OS - IBM Aix 5.3.
    Rajkumar

    Burleson,
It so appears, as from the numerous times you have been published incorrect, untested information, and non-working scripts, you are not an Oracle guru,
    but only a self-proclaimed one.
It also appears nothing on your 'CV' can be easily verified.
You state you are an 'adjunct professor emeritus', however anyone who was kicked out after a few months can call himself a 'professor emeritus'.
Looking at the enormous amount insults and slander you have posted directed to me and others on this forum, showing a highly unprofessional attitude toward your peers, violating this forums rules of conduct, don't you think you deserved to be banned completely?
After all, you are always promoting your own publications here, which is also in violation of the rules for this forum.
What makes you think that "Sybrand" is a man's name? How many male Sybrand's do you know? I don't know any, not one.
That's your problem. I'm as much as male, as you are a fat, ugly, self-proclaimed Oracle-guru, which you are clearly not, you are only a fraud, and this glares from all of your publications.,

  • Stop and Start Services

    Hi All,
We are stopping and starting the services for daily backup. Is it advisable to stop and start services.
Because client wants to stop the services before taking the backup anf start the services after backup.
In this scenario, what services do we need to stop for backup process.
    Regards,
    Kumar

    Hi Saichand,
    Thanks for the response.
Do u have any idea on the below:
    Our scenario is the below:
We have a daily back of BI folders and Loading data from ERP to 10g database.
We logged in with remote desktop user A from ABC system to BI system and We created a batch file to start and stop all the BI the services and scheduled this batch file using windows schedule tasks. These batch files will stop the BI services and after 30 minutes another batch file will load data into the database, after 2 hours start services batch file will start the BI services.
When we open the BI Dashboards in the morning, all the dashboards and reports are working fine. But when I login to BI system, OC4J windows is not visible and dashboards are not coming and when we check the logs, LOGs says OC4J is running.
    Please suggest us the solution.

  • Connecting 9i database from 10g OEM

Does anyone know how you would connect to a 9i database from 10g OEM?

If you want to manage a 9i environment just as if this was a 10g environment, it is not possible with the regular EM DB Control console. First of all this console is setup on a per oracle instance basis, so in the event you had a 10g Console configured this is exclusively to mange the database it is attached to.
On the other hand, you can setup db 10g Grid control, this way, by properly installing and configuring a grid agent in the target node, you can monitor and manage the 10g database. You should keep in mind that even if the 9i database is visible from the 10g grid control console, it doesn't mean the 10g features will be availabe, such as ADDM or some other advisors. If you want to monitor performance you must configure the regular Statspack available in 9i.
EM Grid Control can manage databases starting from 8.1.7.4.0

  • Srvctl on 11.2.0.3 does not stop and start listeners

I recently installed the Grid software under the "grid" user on RH5. Clusterware and ASM run under GRID_HOME, the single instance database runs under ORACLE_HOME. I have created 2 listeners on non-default ports (manually using entried in listener.ora) and then added to srvctl (srvctl add listerner -l LISTENER_XPT -o /app/oracle/product/dhome_1 -p "TCP:1523" -- in ORACLE_HOME.
    When stopping the listener using:
oracle@#####>srvctl stop listener -l LISTENER_XPT -- note starting with oracle user in ORACLE_HOME. Below is from "/app/grid/product/11.2.0/grid/log/server_name/agent/ohasd/oraagent_grid/oraagent_grid.log

Why wouldnt the Oracle user not be able to start/stop a resource from ORACLE_HOME ? Any assistance would be helpful

I just removed the listener out of the ORACLE_HOME and added it using srvctl to the GRID_HOME. Now I am able to stop and start.
Still the question, why cant oracle user start an oracle_home managed resource. But the oracle user could start and stop using lsnrctl stop/start
Below if the results from ps (note I just started listener from GRID_HOME):
    grid@PRODBLD:+ASM>ps -ef |grep lsnr

  • SSRS Report queries begin running slowly, have to stop and start report server to restore performance

We have had a production issue crop up twice now where reports begin running slowly seemingly at random.
When this happens we can see from running SQL Profiler that the report queries are taking an extremely long time to execute.  The same queries when run directly in management studio run quickly.
Initially I suspected parameter sniffing, and tried using OPTION (RECOMPILE) in the reports, as well as clearing out the particular query from the plan cache and running the SQL in SSMS to try and get a better plan etc but no amount of jiggery pokery by
me could get the queries to run any faster.
The really weird thing - is that stopping and starting the report server via the reporting services configuration manager instantly cures the problem.
I'd really love to know - why this might be?  Is it something to do with the report server closing and re-opening its connections to the database? That's the only sort of thing I can think of...any ideas? Anyone? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
    LucasF

    Hi LucasF,
In your scenario, usually we can monitor the execution log in Report Database. If you run below query, you can get the results how long the report takes to render (TimeRendering), how long to process the report(TimeProcessing) and how long to retrieve data
from Database(TimeData). You can check the starttime and endtime to know the total time for executing a report.
    SELECT TOP1000 *FROM[ReportServer].[dbo].[ExecutionLog2]

    Troubleshooting Reports: Report Performance
In SQL Server Reporting Services, a job will be created by SQL Server Agent if any of the following processes is underway:
query execution on a remote or local database server
    report processing
    report rendering
To cancel a job that is running on the report server, we can cancel the job directly or reduce the report execution time-out value in the SQL Server Management Studio and then will stop query execution. Please refer to the steps below:
Open SQL Server Management Studio, and connect to "Reporting Services".
Under the Report Server node, right-click on the "Jobs" folder and select "Refresh". Then, right-click on "Jobs" again and click "Cancel All Jobs".
Right-click on the Report Server node and open the "Server Properties" dialog.
Click the "Execution" option, and set the "Limit report execution to the following number of seconds:" to a much smaller number. After this issue is resolved, this configuration should revert to the previous state.
    Reference:
    Managing a Running Process
Setting Time-out Values for Report and Shared Dataset Processing
In addition, we can also use the KILL Transact-SQL statement to terminate a normal connection by terminating the transactions that are associated with the specified session ID. For the details information, you can refer to:
    KILL (Transact-SQL)
If you still have any problem, please feel free to ask.

  • How to stop and start only the process of Oracle Application Express?

I'd like to know how to stop the process of Oracle Application Express on my server installed oracle express package.
After installed Oracle Express edition, not only oracle database server processes but also Oracle Application Express, such as http server, is started automatically...
I hope to stop and start Application Express on demand but is this feature enabled?

Oracle Apex is an API, if that helps you understand / visualize. You do not start Apex process nor stop it.
When an Apex session starts it starts calling the API.
You can however start / stop the listener. It may be OHS, ApexListener and the J2EE container running it, OC4J or any other "server" that you are using.
The built-in EPG is something like an API again, you cannot start / stop it but you can disable/enable it with DBMS_XDB.SETHTTPPORT API.

  • How to stop and Start ASM in 11gR2

    Hi,
Any one please let me know the complete process of how to stop and start the ASM instance in
    11.2.0.1 oracle.
    Thanks.
    Ali

    Hi;
If you need to close ASM than you need to also close database
    You need to close db:
    srvctl stop database -d instance_name
    or
    set ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID
    sqlplus "/as sysdba"
    shutdown immediate;
    srvctl stop LISTENER
    srvctl stop ASM -f
    or see:

  • Cluster stop and start

    Hi Experts ,
Is it possbile to stop and start the Sun cluster as like VCS (hastop and hastart).
    Regards,
    R.Rajesh Kannan.

    So many questions!
It depends what you're trying to achieve. Sun Cluster is only started and stopped when you boot/shutdown Solaris.
However, may be you actually only want to be able to make changes to a service without Sun Cluster trying to restart it, etc. If that is the case, then you simply need to disable the monitoring on the service in question and then you can do what you like with the service and Sun Cluster won't react.
A typical example would be for HA-Oracle. If you don't stop the monitoring and then have the DBA try and shutdown the database, they will find that Sun Cluster detected the 'failure' and restarted the service. However, disabling the monitoring will allow the DBA to shutdown Oracle manually, make their changes and bring it back up again. The monitoring can then be re-enabled on the database.

  • Is it necessary to regularly stop and start application to free memory?

Do we need to stop and start an application regularly to free memory and increase performance? We have had random dynamic calc errors that went away after a stop/start.
A consultant recommended we script a stop/start to run once per day. We are on version 7.
I am concerned if the script stops an application while a calc is in progress - database corruption might occur.
    Thanks,
    J

One big thing you should realize is that if your memory settings are really too large it does not manifest right away. As you perform certain actions the memory is allocated. So if you are on 32-bit Essbase which you are on a V7 platform the combination of your index + page + memory to support outline + calc caches * # of concurrent calcs + dynamic calc cache + about 200 MB needs to all be under 2 GB; when/if you get to a point of too much memory allocation you start getting quite a few interesting errors. Shutting down/starting up is not a proper long term way to manage memory issues -- properly setting the caches and other configurations is proper to resolve long term for that.

  • What will happen if oracle listener is stopped and started again.....

    Hi Gurus,
Please suggest What will happen if oracle listener is stopped and started again on a running SAP System ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Lakhbir,
What will happen is that, all SAP work processes will loose connection to the database.
If any active jobs(background jobs, updates, insert to database ) are running, they may fail. All the work processes will go to a re-connect state.
( There are few notes on WP reconnect which you can check and read about)
DB Reconnect Parameters - SAP High Availability - SAP Library
Application will be running but users will not be able to do any activity or may not be able to login at all and may get errors  like ( No connect to database possible)
As soon as you start the listener process again , all the work processes will connect to the database again.
This is because the WPs will keep on trying to connect to database at regular interval and as soon as the connection is available they will re-connect.
You do not have to restart any work process manually in SM50 or anywhere else as this feature is enabled by default until disabled manually.
    Thanks
    Amit
