Storing pics in DB

Hi, I'm making a web page that will allow users to sign up and store pictures. My question is : is it better to have a BLOB column to store pictures in the DB directly or just store the file name in the database and store the pictures in the web server? And why? Can n e one help?
thanks.
Mike

Personally, I'd strongly prefer a BLOB in the database. That way, the images get backed up with the rest of the database, the images are transactionally consistent with the rest of the data, and you don't have to worry about major pain when someone in the future needs to reorganize where the images are stored on the server.

  • Finding iPhoto stored pics using Finder

Thanks to all in advance for what is probaby a simple answer / solution.
In June, I upgraded everything in order to be "cloud" compliant. This included iLife so I am running iPhoto '11. Prior to this upgrade, I was able to locate photos with Finder by clicking on "Photos" --> "Original" (or modified) --> The year --> FilmStrip name. Any new download from the camera would be placed in that fashion. That made it easy for me to locate photographs to attach to emails when not using Apple's Mail (Web-based hotmail).
Since I upgraded, I can follow the same string except the new iPhoto saves it differently after the "the year" portion of the search. It gives it an arbitrary number (as near as I can figure), then subfiles with other arbitrary numbers and then a longer string which I presume is time / date stamping. I have included screen shots  below so that my inadequate explanation  makes more sense. You can see the pics stored prior to the upgrade easily recognizable from FilmStrip folders.
My question is: why? Is there a way to change how the files are stored? Basically reverting back to the utterly easy to understand way that makes Apple such a wonderful tool for me!
I also apologize in advance if this has been asked before. I tried a number of search strings to locate something like this and it might show my naivete in not being able to find the solution to my own problem.
    Cheers,
    -Tod

Why? Because they decided to, really. You must have updated from v6 or earlier. iPhoto now uses large amounts of virtualisation in its operations.
But it doesn’t matter - and never did.
Directly accessing the photos via the Finder is not supported - nor has it ever been. Basically, the iPhoto Library has no user serviceable parts within it.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
All of the above are a: a whole lost faster and b: a whole lot safer than rooting around in the old folders of the iPhoto Library   Regards  TD

  • Storing Pics on iCloud w/Photos But Viewing on Demand w/iOS Devices

My intention is to use Photos to organize and upload my pics to iCloud.  But my wife and I would like to be able to view, on demand if you will, these iCloud pics on our iOS devices without having to download them to the iOS device and use up local storage.  Can this be done and if so, what is the configuration required?  Thanks for your help!

Currently this isn't possible since it looks like 'Optimize iPhone Storage' will still download some images to the device.
From iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support:
"If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. All of your original, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while device-size versions are kept on your device. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them."

  • HT201302 Is there a way to recover the photos I just took? I never deleted it but it's all gone now. This is how it happened, I tried to restore backup too see my old stored pics not knowing that it will delete my newly-taken photos. Please help!

Is there a way to recover the photos I just took using my iPhone 4? Doing the restore backup deleted my new pics!!!!

maybe if you've done a more recent backup before restoring from the older one... also, maybe if you've had icloud set up, you may be able to recover them

  • Storing pics on 3G ipod whilst travelling

I will be travelling for 6wks and have a 40G 3rd Gen Ipod. (My son also has an 80G iPod video). I have a Kodak DX7590 digital camera, and a Canon EOS 30D. One has a Compact Dig card, and the other a Smart Media card. Whats the best way to upload the pics onto my ipod? Will the Apple Digital Camera connector work with both cameras or is there a better way to connect/ upload the pics. I don't have to SEE the pics on the ipod, just store them till I get home. Many thanks.

    G5, 1.6GHz SP : G4 PB 1.67Ghz 10.4.3 1GbRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Steve,
I don't know about the iPod camera accessory. I looked into it one time myself but it was unclear if it would work with my main digital camera. Also I have another older digital camera I still use because it is a great IR camera but does not have a USB port.
So what I ended up getting was a "On-The-Go" (aka "OTG") drive enclosure. These are typically for 2.5" laptop type drives (you supply the drive). Essentially the OTG specification allows the drive to act as a host controller for the USB port and can transfer files off of any USB Mass Storage compliant device hooked up to it. This included most digital cameras with USB ports, USB card readers, USB Thumb drives, and other hard drives.
The one I got was from Macally, but I don't see it on their web site anymore. It has a built in Lithium Ion Battery. It hooks up to the computer like a normal USB2 external enclosure. But out "in the field" you can run it off the battery and connector your camera or USB card reader to it, hit a button, and it will automatically copy everything from the Camera/Card Reader/etc. into the OTG drive.
They work pretty good and do the job. Downsides are there are typically no ways to check if your transfer is OK since they do not have screens to check stuff & they tend to be pricey (~$40-$60 for the enclosure vs. $15-$25 for a normal 2.5" enclosure).
To work around the first problem, no confirmation if everything transferred, I tend to "sync" my camera memory cards twice (each time creates a new folder on the OTG drive) before erasing the card. Since it can read directly off a card reader, I can transfer stuff off my Olympus xD cards as well as off the older Oly's SmartMedia cards (from the camera without a USB port).
Anyway, just a thought. Do a web search for "On-The-Go Enclosure" or "OTG Enclosure" and you will start to find plenty of options.

  • HELP! Can Any Version of Photoshop Make a Blurry Pic Clear???

This is a common problem that needs a fix for... Any suggestions?? Using Auto Fix Or Manual doesn't seem to help with this; I've tried on several pics...

Any suggestions on the best (in most people's opinion) "somewhat professional quality" Application/Photo Editing Product that can fix common problems like this (blurry pics)/others, that will also store/catalog your photos like "Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Ed. 3.0"-That won't "break the bank" for someone on a "McDonald's budget"? Also, Am I correct to say that "Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Ed. 3.0", is made more for "storing" pics, than "Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0"?-Isn't the latter more for photo "editing"? I look forward to your prompt reply-please try 2 address all the issues... Thank you.

  • ICloud Photo Library and iPhone Storage

How can I delete just the locally stored photos/videos on my iPhone? I am using iCloud Photo Library and just imported thousands of pics into Photos for Mac. Now, my iPhone can "see" my entire photos library, but I have 18GB of 'Photos' locally stored on the phone. I would like to be able to delete the locally stored pics but when I try to delete any image (whether I know it's one that is locally stored or know it is one that is in iCloud), it says, "This photo will be deleted from iCloud Photo Library on all of your devices." I do not want to delete it from iCloud, only my iPhone. Thanks in advance!

yeah, I don't think they are allowing you to do this. You can only optimize the locally stored photos, and if the phone fills up with those, it will then dump some from your phone but keep them in the cloud. Like you, I was hoping that once you store a photo in iCloud, you could remove the local copy of the photo. and worse, if you do start deleting photos from your phone, it sounds like they automatically get deleted off of the cloud, after 30 days that is. Doesn't make sense to me. Finally, on your mac, if you have more photos than you have iCloud photo storage, it just stops syncing, rather than just storing your most recent pics?!?

  • ISight green LED comes on with no user input?

So,pretty freaky when it looks like someone has taken over control of your perfectly sound Mac, right? I was across the room, and I say the camera light come on my MPB, and there weren't any IM apps loaded, and certainly none with auto camera on configured. Who would be crazy enough to do that? Performance artists of some description.
Any thoughts on what could be doing this, and what I might look for to find out if I'm being hacked? I could pull the net connection, but the point of having a computer is to be on the network, right? Unless all you're doing is writing, of focussed on local activities.
    Freaked me out, that did.

    Hi,
Nearly a yewar ago there was a report that a US School had given out Macs that had software on them that allowed the School to access the computer and the Camera.
They claimed it was so they could see who had any computer that was stolen.
I don't remember if the story actually said if any were stolen.
It did say that students got to find out and the School was in a lot of trouble for taking and storing pics, mainly of students in thier bedrooms.
I don't remember if anyone said the light came on or not.
I don't think it is going to be any sort of hacking.
    Things to exclude.
Some Web Sites can access the camera via the Flash Plug-in.
This normally causes a Pop up to appear where you have to specifically Agree to Allow access. However there is also a Remember button.
It is a long time since I saw someone code a page that accessed the camera without asking (whether that is Adobe changing that feature or actual Coding I am not sure)
There is also a Google Video Chat Plug-in for Macs so they can chat via the Google Mail Web page Chat option.
I had used this very little and can't say that I can remember if it asks for Permission.
However you don't say you found a Video Chat Invite in a Google Chat
Face Time on a Intel Mac and iChat on any both do a partial Login at the Computer Start up.
In iChat's case this will start the iChat Up if someone sends you an Off Line IM  (it does depend if you have reset the default Accept to be Off - normmaly by a Message from AIMSysMessage asking if you want to receive more - answering No to the IM turns it Off)
In Face Time's case any Incoming call will start up Face Time.
The Beta seems reluctant to show a Window but the camera is then Active.
I do not have the App Store version and don't know if the Preferences can be set to only accept calls when fully active.
Sticking somewhat with Web Browsers there are apps that can be set up to detect movement linked to the Screen Saver being active (or not) and loading it to a web site (on the Mac or External).
See EvoCam and SecuritySpy in the Nanny cam section of this page
Also consider everything else on that page.
iMovie, Quicktime that you already have and any of the Add-on and apps listed.
Remember the list is not exhaustive.
For instance Comic Book bundled at one time with soem Macs can access the camera for Snap Shots.
System Preferecnes > Accounts > (Any Account) > Login Pic
This can access the camera for Snap Shots if set to Change the Pic
Depending what items you have in System Preferences > Sharing and in some cases additional Access Passwords you may have a point of Access.
Screen Sharing can be accessed without an incoming password over VNC  This would tend to mean that your routiung device is forwarding that port (normally 5900) to your computer - OR - you are connected directly to the internet such as a Cable modem.
Any person making use of this would have the same access to the Mac and its apps, System Folder structure that you do.
Most of the Posts that have said someone has reported similar to you (and reported back) have tended to say that a fault was found when they took it to a Store.
The Internal iSIght is a USB device.
The OS numbers the devices you have so it "knows" which one the apps and other softare are trying to contact and use.
It is know that sometimes the  Mac loses track of which device is which.
The camera may have been triggered when it should have been an External Hard Drive or other device.
Restarting the computer will normally sort this.

  • 5800 Xpress Music Camera & Lcd preview problem

    Hi
Iam facing the foll problems with my 5800 Xpress Music phone.  I always update it to latest firmware.
    1. 50 % of times , when I go into snapshot mode or in video mode,
the preview becomes blank and I am unable to operate the camera
    2. Worst bug, is recently, some of the stored pics & videos are getting deleted automatically,
    3. 50 % of times, the LCD preview shows a blank screen in video play back mode.
please suggest a method to resolve these issues.
    Thanks
    Muninder

It shows also the duration of the last call.
Oh I get it. You want for each particular call.
When you go to Menu>Log, you see three icons (recent calls, call duration, packet data). If you notice at the top of the screen, just under the time, and the "Log", there are two tabs. Tap the tab on the right, it will take you to the "Detailed" Log. You can see here a list of all the SMS and calls you have made. Each Item is labeled if its a call, sms, or gprs, and if its outgoing or in going.
Tapping on a call entry will show you call direction (in/out), type (video/voice), DURATION, and number call/calling.

  • External hard drive save photos

we recently switched from windows to mac..i use a external hard drive (passport) to save all of my digital photos.  I'm having trouble moving my pictures to the passport.  In the past..I just drag and drop, but the mac won't let me.  I am able to see all of my previously stored pics, but cant move my new ones.  any suggestions?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
You can do similar with iTunes but best to ask on that forum for details.

  • Using Laptop for temporary workflow, need help!

Hi, I need some help.  New to LR, love it! I currently do all my work on my desktop, but I am buying a new one and need to take mine in to have files transferred etc.  In the meantime, I am a wedding photographer and we are in the middle of wedding season...so I thought I would just use my laptop as a temp workspace.  All my files, catalogs etc are alredy stored on an external hard drive.  I don't trust the computer drives for storing pics.  Anyway, so I thought I could just hook my ExtHD up to my laptop and it would be fine.  It does work to see all the original files....BUT any edits I made and stored in "collections" are not there.  The collection file folders are there, but they are empty.  What the heck!  I have to be able to use my laptop for a few days.  What do I do?  I read the section on syncing catalogs on two computers but it still didn't open my collections where all my edits are made.  Please help asap!  Thanks,  Kim

As you can see I am sitting right here waiting on someone to save the day for me!  ha ha
I don't understand.  The Catalog etc are already on my Ext Hard Drive.  I am so confused as to where I should put it.  Why can't I just open it from it's current location on my ext hard drive?  Thanks,

  • Annoying Safari "problem"... a tricky one that has confounded others

OK, so a confession...I prefer the world of Windows to the Mac environment. Simply because it's....simple. The Mac life is just too tricky/complicated (take for example, how hard it is to ever find a picture in iPhoto, compared the simplicity of storing pics in a folder!). I digress. I use a Mac because I love the hardware and some of the beauty. But I have one snare in Safari that drives me nuts.
If I have used Google, searched on something, clicked on a link or two, and then go to edit my search....the search line automatically reverts to the previous search. You can imagine how annoying this is if the previous search was very different, and all I wanted to do was correct some spelling or something.
    Funky, no?

Yup, I posted on this issue yesterday. No responses as yet. Googling it ( ! ) reveals a few other people experiencing the same thing. It can be a royal pain the backside, can't it? I'm here to sympathise only, I'm afraid.
    Any ideas gratefully received, readers.

  • Is 4G service Down in Tucson, AZ? Only getting 3G service for the past 2 weeks in Tucson, AZ.

Called customer service and they it's because Verizon is installing 4G XLTE. I asked when Tucson's 4G would be restored and was told they couldn't give me a date. I have not seen any announcements that we would lose 4G during the transition. Is anyone else in Tucson experiencing this or is it just me? I have a Motorola DROID RAZR

Ahhh makes me wonder now.  So maybe that's the real reason for my 4G loss?  My SIM card has failed?  It's likely 2 or 3 years old.  Is that the average life?  I'm assuming then that the SIM card can fail in this area but still work otherwise (storing pics, etc) since I've got no problems there.

Hope someone can help me on this my n91 is storing pics but they arent showing when i go to gallery they are only showing when i go to file manager how do i get photos to show in galley -> images?

This is not strange first of all.
Either you take pictures or save pictures from computer you may not be able to view them in gallery.
This often happened to me even after I upgraded to the 2.10.013 version.
Okay, you can now do this three things.
By file explorer go to E>system>data>application>DB>E
    delete E.
Or, connect your phone to your PC via usb mode.Open N91 local drive, choose properties , select tools and put tickmark only on the first box of Error checking.
If neither of these two things can help you,
then there remains only one thing to do:
