Strange behaviour of iPad Photos app/My Photo Stream with iOS 8.1 and Yosemite

My requirement is surely simple and commonplace, yet is proving impossible to achieve thanks to Apple's weird design of the Photos app and the way My Photo Stream works.  I'm very technically savvy, but I'm quite prepared to admit I'm being stupid if someone can explain what I'm doing wrong!  I have an iPad Air running iOS 8.1 and a MacBook Pro Retina with OS X 10.10 (Yosemite).  I've enabled iCloud Drive on both.  iPhoto on the Mac is at v9.6.
I have a selection of 109 photos from a recent holiday in a folder on my MacBook, which I would like in a folder on my iPad as a nice way to show them to friends.   iTunes may work but seems so incredibly clunky and old-fashioned I hoped I could do it over the network or via the cloud.  I would use (and often have used) Dropbox, which is reliable and logical but rather tedious as you have to save each photo one by one.
So, with a little research and playing around, I found that I could get them to the iPad using iPhoto on the Mac, with My Photo Stream enabled.  However, it doesn't seem to work.  The photos were all created yesterday so had yesterday's date (I'd removed EXIF data that contained various earlier dates).
I've just done the following test:
I deleted all photos from the iPad (using the Photos app)
On the Mac, I deleted all photos from iPhoto
In iPhoto Preferences on the Mac, I turned on “My photo stream”, with the two sub-options also enabled
I imported the 109 photos into iPhoto
On the iPad, in My Photo Stream, I saw the photos gradually appear over the next few minutes
A  minute or two later, when no more seemed to coming, I found that 103 of the original 109 were in My Photo Stream.  So, strangely, 6 photos were missing
Even stranger, in the “Photos” tab, under “Yesterday” 37 of them could be seen.  If I understand this correctly (which I may not), that means 37 of them had been copied from the My Photo Stream to the iPad itself.  Am I right?  Why only 37?
On the iPad, I added a new Album called Summer 2014
I selected all 103 photos from My Photo Stream to add to the album
In the Summer 2014 album, I briefly see “103 Photos” at the bottom of the album, but this quickly changes to 66 as photos that briefly appeared now disappear, leaving only 66 left in the album
Checking in Photos/Collections/Yesterday, I find there are now 66 photos (rather than 37 as there were earlier) - the same ones that are showing in my Summer 2014 album.
If I attempt to manually add any of the missing photos to the album, nothing happens - the album refuses to allow any more than the 66 it has.
In iPhoto on the Mac, if I click on the SHARED/iCloud entry on the left, I see all 109 photos, which I think means iPhoto has correctly shared them all, so I suspect the problem is with the iPad.
Yesterday, when I was playing with this, the album allowed 68 photos.  I tried deleting one and adding one of the missing photos, but it wouldn't allow this either, so I don't think it's objecting to the number of photos so much as disliking particular ones.
I've got 7.7GB free space on the iPad so I don't think it's a space issue.
Can anyone help?  If it's a bug in iOS, iCloud or OS X, how can I report it, given that I'm out of my 3 months support for both my machines?
Thank you!

Well done lumacj! This is a good workaround. Forgive me if I offer a simplified version here (this works if original photos are in Photo stream):
1. In "My photo stream", tap on select at top of screen
2. Tap on each photo you want to send via WhatsApp (circle with "√" shows for each photo)
3. Tap on square box with arrow at bottom of screen (Share) - NOT "Add To"
4. Tap on "Save image(s)"
5. Check that selected photos now appear on "Camera Roll"
6. From WhatsApp, send photos as you would have normally

  • I have two different iCloud accounts. I can't sign into photo stream with my personal account and have tried deleting from my iPhone first, then the MacBook Pro. Still won't let me sign in with the personal account. Please help.

I have two different iCloud accounts - business and personal. I can't sign into Photo Stream with my personal account because it says my business account is my primary account. They are separate but equal accounts. I have tried deleting the iCloud account from my iPhone, then my MacBook Pro and signing in again on both devices. The iPhone says that my primary account ismy personal account (which is good) but my MacBook Pro still will not sign into that account so I can use Photo Stream.
Any suggestions? This iCloud stuff is getting annoying.

  • ITunes photo sync with iOS 7.1 and OS X Mavericks (Aperture and iPhoto).

The iPhoto Library can be used by Aperture as well as iPhoto. This simplifies synchronization of photos between OS X Mavericks and both iPhone (IOS7) and iPad (IOS7).   After updating an IOS7.1 "Delete Imported Items ..." screen tells me the number of items successfully imported, the number of items previously imported, and offers the option of deleting or keeping the items.  Are there other capabilities that we can access on these mobile devices?

  • Syncing photo stream with all iOS

    Hello,
Not sure if I am doing something worong or misunderstand what photo streaming's abilities are.  I have turned on Photo Streaming with my iMac, iPhone and iPad.  When looking at the Photo Stream folder on the iPhone, how do I get that same folder synced to the iPad?

Turning on Photo Stream on your iPhone and iPad requires two distinct steps:
    1.  In Settings > iCloud, Photo Stream must be "on".
    2.  Under Settings > Photos & Camera, My Photo Stream must be "on".
Also, be certain you're using the identical Apple ID and password on all shared devices.

I have iCloud for Windows 4.0 (or iCloud Control Panel) and signed in, but when I go to iCloud Photos, I see a message that says I'm not signed in.
If you see either of these messages and you're already signed in, you need to apply your settings:
"iCloud Photos is not enabled. Open iCloud for Windows 4.0."
"iCloud Photos is not enabled. Open iCloud Control Panel."
To apply your settings in Windows 8.1:
Close the Windows Explorer window that has the message.
Go to the Start screen, click the down arrow  in the lower-left corner, then click the iCloud app.
    Select Photos.
    Next to Photos, click Options.
Select My Photo Stream. If you want to share certain photos, select Photo Sharing as well.
    Click OK, then click Apply.
    Return to iCloud Photos.
To apply your settings in Windows 8:
Close the Windows Explorer window that has the message.
Go to the Start screen, then click the iCloud tile.
    Select Photos.
    Next to Photos, click Options.
Select My Photo Stream. If you want to share certain photos, also select Photo Sharing.
    Click OK, then click Apply.
    Return to iCloud Photos.
To apply your settings in Windows 7:
Close the Windows Explorer window that has the message.
Choose Start menu > All Programs > iCloud > iCloud.
    Select Photos.
    Next to Photos, click Options.
Select My Photo Stream. If you want to share certain photos, also select Photo Sharing.
    Click OK, then click Apply.
    Return to iCloud Photos.
I added some photos to My Photo Stream on my Windows PC, but they don't appear in the Recently Added album or My Photo Stream album on any of my devices.
To see if your computer and other devices are online, try to view www.apple.com. If you can't connect to the Internet, iCloud Photos can't send or receive updates from My Photo Stream. You might need to troubleshoot your Internet connection on your PC, Mac, or iOS devices.
On your computer, open iCloud for Windows 4.0 (or iCloud Control Panel) and make sure that you're signed in to the same iCloud account that you're using on your other supported devices.
In Windows 8.1, go to the Start screen, click the down arrow  in the lower-left corner, then click the iCloud app.
In Windows 8, go to the Start screen, and click the iCloud tile.
In Windows 7, choose Start menu > All Programs > iCloud > iCloud.
Click the Options button and make sure that My Photo Stream is turned on.
Close and reopen iCloud for Windows 4.0 (or iCloud Control Panel).
    Restart your computer.
Make sure that you used one of the methods below to add photos to My Photo Stream with iCloud for Windows 4.0 (or iCloud Control Panel) on your Windows PC.
Add the photos using the Add Photos button in iCloud Photos:
Open a File Explorer window (Windows 8 or 8.1) or Windows Explorer window (Windows 7).
Under the Favorites menu, click iCloud Photos.
    Double-click My Photo Stream.
    Click Add photos.
Select the photos that you'd like to add and click OK.
Or you can copy photos from a folder to the iCloud Photos Uploads folder:
Confirm the location of your Uploads folder.
Open iCloud for Windows 4.0 (or iCloud Control Panel).
In Windows 8.1, go to the Start screen, click the down arrow  in the lower-left corner, then click the iCloud app.
In Windows 8, go to the Start screen, then click the iCloud tile.
In Windows 7, choose Start menu > All Programs > iCloud > iCloud.
Click the Options button next to iCloud Photos.
Open a File Explorer window (Windows 8 or 8.1) or Windows Explorer window (Windows 7).
Go to the iCloud Photos folder location listed in iCloud for Windows 4.0 (or iCloud Control Panel).
    Open the Uploads folder.
Open the folder that contains the photos that you want to add to My Photo Stream.
Copy them into the Uploads folder.

  • Mt iPads photo stream is using space on my iPad

The photo stream is taking up about 400 MB on my iPad, however there are no photos on the iPad it's self or in the photo stream. I have tried turning off my iPad all the way and turning it back on, I have tried turning off photo stream in the iCloud preferences and I have even tried to delete my whole iCloud account from my iPad temporarily, and it is still taking up about 400 MB of space on the iPad. This really annoys me because I only have 16 GB of memory on it and as you all know about 2.5 GB of that is taken up by iOS. Does anyone know why this is happening?

    Hello Phildebeldorado,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you are missing the My Photo Stream album on your iPad, then you may have the iCloud Photo Library beta enabled.  When you enable this option, it removes the Camera Roll and My Photo Stream albums from your device.

  • IPhone Photos edited with iOS 7 losing adjustments in Aperture

I shot a few photos with iOS 7 this weekend while at the cottage and was importing them into Aperture (which I use to manage my rather large collection). I noticed that for some reason some of the adjustments were now missing. Yes my crops and auto enchancements were there but the colour effects I applied were not.
Just curious if anyone knows how to work around this? I figured I could always open the edited photos in another app like Camera+ and save them out again but that seems to be poor form as it'd result in generation loss.
    Any suggestions?

Could you give more details please, so we can compare notes?
How are you editing and transfering your photos - editing directly in the Camera.app, the Photos.app, iPhoto IOS?
And what kind of IOS device? iPad, iPod, iPhone?
And how have the photos been transferred to your Mac? Photo Stream? Import by connecting the device?
I just made a test on my iPad with IOS 7 and all edits transferred:
Taking the pictures with the Camera.app
Editing them in the Camera.app and saving the edited version to the camera roll.
The edited version with all edits appeared in the Photo Stream (a few hours later ) and all edits were there.
But if you edited in the Photos.app and not in the Camera.app, it is harder to get the edited version to the Camera Roll. I use iPhoto to save an edited copy of the photo to the camera Roll (from the "Share" menu in iPhoto). That adds them to the Photo Stream as well.
But the biggest problem with this is, that saving back to the Camera Roll after editing in iPhoto appears to be changing all dates and the lens information anad Camera Make is now missing from the EXIF..
The photo I took yesterday should show the dates like this:  Sept. 23,
But it is showing Sept. 24 for all dates:
So my suggestion would be to do basic edits in the Camera.app before the photos will be saved to the Camera Roll for the first time, and to postpone all further edits, until the photos are in Aperture. Or, to keep both versions in the camera roll, the original and the edited version.

  • How to Delete Entire Photo Stream in iOS 6

Here's how to delete and reset the entire Photo Stream in iOS 6.
WARNING: This will delete all 1000 photos in your Stream so make sure you're ready to do this (by backing them up).
    Delete the Photo Stream
Note: You cannot have your device hooked up to a PC or Mac during this procedure.
In Settings, select "Photos & Camera" (in the left column on iPad).
(On the right in iPad) move the slider for "My Photo Stream" to Off.
It will ask you if you want to keep or delete your photos. Choose Delete.
If you're doing this on multiple devices, make sure to complete these three steps on each device before continuing.
You have successfully turned off and deleted the Photo Stream, but you're not done. Now you need to reset the Photos app so that it won't re-download the photos from iCloud if you choose to turn Photo Stream back on.
    Reset Photos App
Launch the multi-tasking App Tray. On most devices, press the home button twice.
Remove the Photos app from the App Tray, by holding down the Photos icon until the red X appears on the icon.
Press the red X. The icon will disappear from the App Tray.
You're done! Now, you may launch the Photos app from the home screen if you wish.
Turn Photo Stream Back On (Optional)
If you want to use the Photo Stream feature for future photos, you may turn the Photo Stream feature back on.
In Settings, select "Photos & Camera" (in the left column on iPad).
(On the right in iPad) move the slider for "My Photo Stream" to On.

I haven't done it in a while but you may want to connect the phone to your Mac and open Image Capture on the Mac. I don't remember that it allows deleting by folder but if not it still would be faster than doing it one by one on the phone. The delete icon is at the lower left (red circle with line through it).

  • I share a photo stream with a family member. Is there a way to make it so we have separate photo stream but still use the same apple id?

i share a photo stream with a family member. Is there a way to make it so we have separate photo stream but still use the same apple id?

You'll want a separate iCloud account for each user in addition to the main Apple ID used for purchases.
Let's say you have a family of four (husband, wife, and two children). Here is what you will need:
Main Apple ID for shared purchases in Tunes (everybody will be using this)
iCloud (Apple ID) account for husband
iCloud (Apple ID) account for wife
iCloud (Apple ID) account for child 1
iCloud (Apple ID) account for child 2
Yes, you can have both an Apple ID and iCloud account setup on the same device. On each iOS device, setup the main Apple ID account for the following services:
iCloud (Photo Stream and Backup are the only items selected here).
    Music Home Sharing
    Video Home Sharing
    Photo Stream
Additionally, on each iOS device, add a new iCloud account (Under Mail, Contacts, Calendar) that is unique to each user for the following services:
    Mail (if using @me.com)
    Contacts
    Calendars
    Reminders
    Bookmarks
    Notes
    Find My iPhone
    Messages
    Find Friends
    FaceTime
On your individual Macs (or Mac accounts), use the main Apple ID in iTunes. Then, use the unique iCloud account in/for iCloud.
Now that everbody is using separate iCloud accounts for your contacts, calendars, and other things, it will be all be kept separate.
The only thing that is now 'shared' would be iTunes content (apps and other purchases), backups via iCloud (if enabled), and Photo Stream (if enabled).

  • Photo Stream activation fails in iPhoto and Aperture

    Hi,
i've just updated to OSX 1.7.2 on my iMac and MBA and to iOS5 on my iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Everything basically works well except the iCloud photo stream on my mac.
iPhone and iPad play well and push and pull fotos from the photo stream.
On the mac i can't activate the photo stream. I've updated iPhoto and Aperture but when i try to activate the photo stream it says that it's unable to reach the photo stream. I've already logged out from i cloud and re logged in again but that didn't help. iPhoto and Aperture are the latest versions.
    Anyone with an idea?
Addition: Activation works well on another iMac with another iCloud account from my girl friend (in the same local network), i've also double checked little snitch isn't blocking anything.
Addition 2: It also works on my MBA with the same iCloud account that doesn't work on the iMac. Weird,

I'm fairly certain that it's an account-wide preference. You could always enable a second user account, turn on Fast User Switching, and only swap to that account to launch iPhoto and do your Photo Stream business.

Even if im signed into my old one the photo stream doesnt automatically go to my mac. Im not exactly technology savy but id love to figure this out.

I have also noticed the same "problem".  I do not fully understand the impact of using the same ID on multiple computers and devices if I want to keep them all in sync.

  • What is new/special about Family Photo Stream in iOS 8?

When it was announced at WWDC, I was hoping Family Photo Stream would automatically upload all photos from all of my family's devices into one photo stream that would then synchronize across all the other devices, including iPhoto 2013 on my iMac.
But it seems each family member has to manually add photos to the Family Photo Stream.
In iOS 7, it was already possible to create a shared photo stream, add your family members, and enable them to post to it.
So what, if anything, does iOS 8's Family Photo Stream do that is different?

Yes, as far as I can tell, after enabling Family Sharing and my wife and I now having different iCloud accounts on our phones, Photo Stream does not appear to be shared between us any more. It appears that only the "Family Photos" album is shared, and we have to manually add photos and videos to that.
One of my favourite features of sharing the same iCloud account across multiple devices was that Photostream synced all our family's photos across all devices, no matter who took them. This appears to be a missing feature in Family Sharing for now -- perhaps Apple wasn't aware this was something people were doing?
