Strange Repair Permission Entry

My friend has just purchased a new iMac and is running Snow Leopard.
She could not get an ftp program to run (Cyberduck) so I thought I would try a permission repair.
I got the following message .... any ideas how I fix this?
http://i35.tinypic.com/339rncw.png
I was sharing her screen using iChat at the time, would that be the problem?

Persistent, even after normal reboots. The repair permission runs fine in the mode where you hold down command and R before startup, I am running Lion btw, but kernel panics occur everytime when you do repair permission under the normal operation system.

Boot into Safe Mode and try repairing permissions. Does it still panic? Also, disconnect all external peripherals and see if that makes any difference. Have you repaired the hard drive?
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
To boot from the Recovery HD restart the computer. After the chime hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and "R" keys until the computer starts from the Recovery HD.

Although it’s immensely popular, repairing permissions is a waste of time unless you have a specific indication of a permission error involving system files, which is rare, or a startup failure. It is not a universal rite of healing for computers. It has traditionally spewed bogus warning messages that mean absolutely nothing.
The built-in help for Disk Utility reads in part:
If you see an alert or a message that says your permissions are set incorrectly, you can correct the disk’s permissions by clicking Repair Disk Permissions.
It’s justifiable, though rarely necessary, to repair permissions after running a third-party software installer, as defective installers have been known to damage the permissions of system files.

  • Repair Permission still problematic

I still get the following when trying as Disk Repair Permission:
    Repairing permission for "Macintosh HD"
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
    Permission repair complete.
    Anyone else experience same?
Otherwise upgrade to Leopard on this machine seems to be working ... weird.

Yes, I have this same problem with repair permissions on one of my external drives. Another drive (a brand new one I got for Time Machine) gave a similar error message when TM tried to format it; I was only able to format it by rebooting in Tiger, after which the drive appears to be fine. So, there are problems with Disk Utility, but I don't have a solution.

I even fresh install the system and every time I do repair the permission I always end up with this even though it said repaired.
I figure this is the problem my laptop, sometime it wont save files or documents and it goes in limbo and had to force shutdown and have to restart on the

Should I be concerned that certain permissions could not be repaired?
I am concerned since the computer seems to be running a bit sluggish. I am especially having problems with iPhoto in Editing mode where it is locking up on me.
Not sure if this is a sign of a bad hard drive since I have the alleged bad hard drive (Model: ST9100824AS Revision: 7.01)
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

First order of buiness when visiting these forums is to use the search feature. A search for SUID would have given you many answers. For example, Apple posted this a month ago: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306925
As a final note, manually download and reinstall the 10.5.1 update. Then, repair permissions again. That's fixed the problem for me and a lot of others.

  • Leopard trash hangs; repair permission slow, time capsule erased

since i have installed my leopard upgrade in order to install my time capsule, trash hard to empty and repairing permissions deletes my time capsule backup and capsule says i have no backup (which, when you do your first, it takes 24 hours, so it is not something i want to repeat!). anyone else having these problems? right now, i don't empty trash and don't repair permissions if i want to keep working.

Clearly something is radically wrong with your system. Repairing permission should not result in a backup being deleted. I suggest that you disconnect your TimeCapsule and repair permissions and also check your HD for errors and repair if necessary.
Permission repair takes up to 20 minutes with Leopard because of more extensive checking, but it should be done before starting a backup. You do not want to backup an HD with bad permissions, which is what you seem to be doing.
Your trash being hard to empty may also be tied to your permission errors, but it could be something else.
You need to be more specific in spelling out the problems you are having.

I never have permission to repair befoure, what's happens? Why Disk utility after i choose "Repair Disk" tell me "The permission is repaired" and when i verify again i have the same file Not repaired? What i must do?
    Thanks on advice

(sorry for my english, i hope i'm explaining well my problem)

There is nothing to repair; there are no errors. These "errors" will keep returning no matter how many times you run Repair. This is normal.
The Permissions database has simply not been updated by Apple to reflect the new location of these files. The l before the Permissions is a Symlink which is kind of like an alias linking the files. When you see Permissions like that, you can ignore them. The important thing is that after Repairing you get the report "Permissions have been repaired."

  • Strange empty NAT entry

    Hi All,
What's causing some work stations to create this strange NAT entry with no protocol defined and no Outside local and Outside global.
    core2#sh ip nat trans | inc 172.16.75.139
Pro Inside global Inside local Outside local Outside global
    --- 210.15.240.9 172.16.75.139 --- ---
    tcp 210.15.240.9:5380 172.16.75.139:5380 61.137.191.125:80 61.137.191.125:80
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Andy

    Hi Roman,
    Thanks for the reply.
There is no static nat configured which is why I'm puzzled by that entry.
    core2#sh run | inc nat
    nat server
    nat server
    nat server
    nat server
    nat server
    ip nat outside
    ip nat inside
    ip nat inside
    ip nat outside
    ip nat inside
    ip nat translation timeout 300
    ip nat pool NAT-POOL 210.15.240.6 210.15.240.9 netmask 255.255.255.224
ip nat inside source route-map nonat pool NAT-POOL overload
    route-map nonat permit 10
That's the whole config and you can see that there is no static nat configured anywhere.

  • Strange Calendar Event Entry

Some days ago I found a birthday greeting in my calendar as title of a "whole day" event. Obviously, if this isn't automatically done by the system, someone from outside must have created it. Because there is no birthday field in my contacts I doubt that my system has knowledge of my birthday for an automated message. Therefore, someone else seems to be the sender.
In the detail screen of the event the title text is also shown in the note field. Furthermore "Contacts" is shown as participant. When I try to delete the event the system refuses to do so with a message that Birthday events of my contacts can only be deleted by the calendar administrator. This is strange because I'm able to delete all other calender events and it's my private system with no other administrator than myself.
Does someone know what can be the source of that event i.e. how someone from outside my system can create an event entry in my calender?

Am I the only one? Help.

  • Late sleep on MacBook Air, it must be the very long list of history in repair permission that how many times I repair it, when it's done, I do it again, suddenly it's a long list again, all about iTunes. So what's wrong with this iTunes 11.10.

I predict something is going wrong because of the list history in verify permission disk. after I repair them for a few second , I do it again and also found that long list again..They are all about iTunes. So what's wrong with it. Thanks.

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.
Poster rccharles has provided this description of what it all means:
    drwxrwxrwx
    d = directory
    r = read
    w = write
    x = executeable program
    drwxrwxrwx

After, only the user had read & write.

  • Cant repair permission on usr/bin/lppasswd

Hi, when I run on a daily permission check on my imac. I came across with a error:
Sudo permission usr/bin/lppasswd has been modified and wont be repaired.
Now, i dont remember modifying anything, how can I fix this ?

you shouldn't have done that. this is a system file which the system might need for some printing operations. I would suggest you get it back. you can reinstall it from the leopard install DVD using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com>. and don't ever delete any system files. you might hose the system. why would you think it was ok to do?!
