"String or binary data would be truncated" and field specifications
Hi all,
i have "String or binary data would be truncated" error when i try to execute an insert statment.
can i find witch field is affected by this error? (for return it to the user)
thank's all
As far as I am aware, there's no way to determine which column's length has been exceeded.
You should add code into your stored procedure to check the lengths of variables before inserting their values into your tables, raising an error if necessary - see the example below.
Again I stress that it would be better to modify the client application's code to either warn the user or to limit the number of characters they can enter into a field.

String or binary Data would be truncated. Error detected by database DLL
Having problems generating two reports in Crystal Reports v8.5. I can run it on my machine and one on one of my Terminal Server(TermA). However when I tried to generate the same two reports on my second terminal server(TermB), it crashed and I get the following error messages: ODBC error: String or binary data would be truncated and Error detected by database DLL We have one set user ID and password to generate all of our Crystal Reports.
Steps taken:
Reinstall Crystal on TermB server and did a fresh installation of Crystal 8.5 on another workstation. Ran the reports and the result were the same (unable to generate the report) same errors messages.
Please HELP...
Thanks.Terminal Server was not supported in CR 8.5

I am facing a strange SQL exception:-
The code flow is like this:
.Net 4.0 --> Entity Framework --> SQL 2008 ( StoredProc --> Function {Exception})
In the SQL Table-Valued Function, I am selecting a column (nvarchar(50)) from an existing table and (after some filtration using inner joins and where clauses) inserting the values in a Table Type Object having a column (nvarchar(50))
This flow was working fine in SQL 2008 but now all of sudden the Insert into @TableType is throwing "string or binary data would be truncated" exception.
Insert Into @ObjTableType
Select * From dbo.Table
The max length of data in the source column is 24 but even then the insert statement into nvarchar temp column is failing.
Moreover, the same issue started coming up few weeks back and I was unable to find the root cause, but back then it started working properly after few hours
(issue reported at 10 AM EST and was automatically resolved post 8 PM EST). No refresh activity was performed on the database.
This time however the issue is still coming up (even after 2 days) but is not coming up in every scenario. The data set, for which the error is thrown, is valid and every value in the function is fetched from existing tables.
Due to its sporadic nature, I am unable to recreate it now :( , but still unable to determine why it started coming up or how can i prevent such things to happen again.
It is difficult to even explain the weirdness of this bug but any help or guidance in finding the root cause will be very helpful.
I also Tried by using nvarchar(max) in the table type object but it didn't work.
Here is a code similar to the function which I am using:

I have tried by converting the columns and also validated the input data set for any white spaces or special characters.
For the same input data, it was working fine till yesterday but suddenly it started throwing the exception.Remember, the CTE isn't executing the SQL exactly in the order you read it as a human (don't get too picky about that statement, it's at least partly true enough to say it's partly true), nor are the line numbers or error messages easy to read: a mismatch
in any of the joins along the way leading up to your insert could be the cause too. I would suggest posting the table definition/DDL for:
- PSMetadata, in particular PSRowID, but just post it all
- tblProjectSur, in particularcolumns CSymbID and TblProjSurSurID
- cSymbLookup, in particular column CSymbID
- PSRow, in particular columns SampleRowID, PID,
- PSAuser and PSUserSur, in particualr all the USERID and RowID columns
- SurCSymbs, in particular colum SIDs
Also, a diagnostic query along these lines, repeat for each of your tables, each of the columns used in joins leading up to your insert:
Select count(asurv.sid) as count all
, count(case when asurv.sid between 0 and 9999999999 then 1 else null end) as ctIsaNumber
from SurvCsymb
The sporadic nature would imply that the optimizer usually chooses one path to the data, but sometimes others, and the fact that it occurs during the insert could be irrelevant, any of the preceding joins could be the cause, not the data targeted to be inserted. -
Synch Error: String or binary data would be truncated.
I kicked off an inital synch for WebTools 2007 (may also be an issue in 596) and I had 1 synch error for SBOPartner:
String or binary data would be truncated.
The statement has been terminated.
at netpoint.api.data.DataFunctions.Execute(String SQL, IDataParameter[] parameters, String connectionstring)
at netpoint.api.NPBase.MarkSynched(String SynchID)
at NetPoint.SynchSBO.SBOObjects.SBOPartner.SBOToNetPoint(SBOQueueObject qData)
at NetPoint.SynchSBO.SynchObjectBase.Synch()
I traced the sql log and found the problem was related to addresses. The synchid only allows 50 characters but my synchid was 51 characters (COMINF, Communication Infrastructure Corporation, S). Anyway, to fix I modified the table to allow 100 characters and reran the synch. I know an upgrade will set it back to 50 but at least it's working now.
I tried to post this to support as a bug but I couldn't figure out how (as usual) or the authorization stuff changed so I figured I would post it here so hopefully the devs will see this and update the code.
SteveThanks Shawn ... My version of Netpoint is 2007.0.620.0 and the synch manager is 2007.0.620.35247. I'm not sure what patch level this means I am on though.

String or binary data would be truncated - different service packs on publisher vs distributor
We have transactional replication where the publisher is 10.0.4067 and the distributor is 10.0.4000. The distribution agent will periodically will fail with the following error: String
or binary data would be truncated
SQLSTATE 22001] (Error 8152). The tables on the publisher and subscriber are all the same data type. Could the version difference be causing this issue? Do we need
to upgrade the distributor sql server (different server than the publication server)?Hello,
Just as others post above, the difference service pack version between publisher and distributor should not cause this issue.The replication workfolw between publisher and distributor is through the Log Reader Agent which
runs at the Distributor, it reads the publication transaction log in publisher and copies those transactions in batches to the distribution database at the Distributor.
You can refer to the following thread which about the similar issue casused by a long stored procedure:

String or binary data would be truncated.
Anyone know why I would get this error when trying to place binary data into a sql server 2000 db? The file's length is 5512, and the length of the field I'm putting it in is 8000.
ThanksThat returns the length in bytes. Is the database field defined in bytes or bits?

OK, well you usually need to wrap reserved words in double quotes. But I see that you are already using another reserved work "user" and wrapping that in square brackets so you could try that.
MM_fldUserAuthorization = "[group]"
If the person that built the data model is still there, let them know they've been using very common reserved words. Any word that is part of the SQL language itself should never be used. -
- String or binary data would be truncated. ERROR
was wondering if anyone is getting this error. i created a new function and for 1 of the values i get this error. i'm not sure if this is related to rounding issues but can anyone shed some light
Hi Elmer,
I would request you to first change the name of the variable.

Extracting strings from binary data
Hello,
I am trying to extract string from a binary file.
At the unix command line (sunos) I can just type;
strings <filename>
This is a nice way to get a list of the contents of a directory.
Is there a way in pl/sql to extract strings from binary data ? An equiv to strings on unix/linux ?
Thanks in advance.
BenHi,
If you do want to list the contents of a directory, there are other ways to do it. Here's a base implementation of a utility I wrote:
create or replace and resolve java source named "Util" as
import java.io.*;
import java.sql.*;
import oracle.sql.*;
import oracle.jdbc.driver.*;
public class Util {
public static void listFiles(String directory, oracle.sql.ARRAY[] names)
throws IOException, SQLException {
File f = new File(directory);
if(f==null)
throw new IOException("Directory: "+directory+" does not exist.");
String[] files = f.list(
new FilenameFilter() {
public boolean accept(File dir, String name) {
// List all files
return true;
Connection conn = new OracleDriver().defaultConnection();
ArrayDescriptor descriptor = ArrayDescriptor.createDescriptor("VC_TAB_TYPE", conn);
names[0] = new ARRAY(descriptor, conn, files);
return;
create or replace type vc_tab_type is table of varchar2(255);
create or replace package util authid current_user as
function list_files(p_directory in varchar2)
return vc_tab_type;
end;
create or replace package body util as
procedure list_files (
p_directory in varchar2
, p_filenames out nocopy vc_tab_type
is
language java
name 'Util.listFiles(java.lang.String, oracle.sql.ARRAY[])';
function list_files(p_directory in varchar2) return vc_tab_type
is
l_filenames vc_tab_type := vc_tab_type();
begin
list_files(p_directory, l_filenames);
return l_filenames;
end;
end;
/You can then query the filesystem as follows:
1 select column_value as filename
2 from table(util.list_files('c:\windows'))
3 where column_value like '%.log'
4* and rownum <= 10

URGENT! Can response object contain text as well as binary data
hi all,
My test scneario is like this..
a) User is having a button "Download File" i will call this as download.jsp
b) After hitting the download button i will be sending the file to user by writting into the ServletOutputSream.
c) Whatever option user chooses (i.e. Save / Open / Cancel) I want to do some updations on the existing user screen.
Maybe presenting him the download status e.g. "File Downloaded"
The problems i am facing are
1. SInce i am using ServletOutputSream once i flush the stream i loose the control on response object.
2. After user's operation (i.e. Save / Open / Cancel) unless user again hits
something on UI my server has to look at him with dumb eyes. :(
3.The download operation that i am performing expects some attributes from the request ..
they are Object attributes and not string attribute so i cant user URL rewritting.
If anybody has encountered this type of problem in there projects please share the workaround you used.
Thanx a lot
--Bhupendra MahajanHere in order to send the file to Client i must use Stream ... and in prder to
update the status i.e. HTML i must use Printwritter.... That is the reason
i need both ... If you have some OutputStream available deep down somewhere you can use
both; it just takes a bit of discipline:OutputStream ros; // available from somewhere
// use the following stream for your binary output:
BufferedOutputStream bos= new BufferedOutputStream(ros);
// and use this one for your PrintWriter:
PrintWriter pw= new PrintWriter(bos);Everytime before you want to print some binary data, flush the pw, and everytime
before you want to print some text data, flush the bos.
kind regards,

How to upload large binary data to dB so it can be read by any app?
Hi everyone,
Short version: how do you upload binary data into a MySQL blob field in such a way that it can be read by any application?
Long version:
I've been struggling with the problem of putting files into database BLOB fields. (MySQL and Database Connectivity Toolkit).
I was initially building a query string and executing the query but was finding that certain binary characters were causing failures (end of string terminators, etc...) So, a working solution was to encode the binary string, and that worked fine, although bloated the dB a fair bit. I could decode in LabVIEW and then save the file as needed.
Now, the customer wants to be able to save the files using other apps, including the MySQL Query Browser, so an encoded file is no good.
I found using a parametrized query allows me to put the unencoded string into the dB, but it appends a 4-byte length at the front of the BLOB before it inserts it into the dB. Some apps ignore these 4-bytes (such as .pdf) but most do not.
A related thread on NI discussion forums: http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?boar...ssage.id=354361 has no solution, and my support ticket at NI has been ongoing without answer for a while.
Thanks,
BenThe problem is the DCT. Using ADO it is fairly easy to insert binary data into a BLOB field. I have not tried it in MySQL, but it works fine in SQL Server, Oracle, Firebird and other free/open source databases I have tried. To get you started, see this thread.

Small binary data in the database ... whats best?
Hello,
Maybe this is a novice question but i hope you can advice me about how to proceed.
I am storing little binary data (til 20Kb) in VARCHAR2 field ... but i feel a bit dirty.
Is it a good practice? ... are there good reasons to choose other data types like BLOB, or RAW?
Thank you in advance,
Best regards,You need to use a binary data type otherwise Oracle Net may convert data using NLS rules. http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e26088/sql_elements001.htm#SQLRF50993 says:
>
RAW is a variable-length data type like VARCHAR2, except that Oracle Net (which connects client software to a database or one database to another) and the Oracle import and export utilities do not perform character conversion when transmitting RAW or LONG RAW data. In contrast, Oracle Net and the Oracle import and export utilities automatically convert CHAR, VARCHAR2, and LONG data between different database character sets, if data is transported between databases, or between the database character set and the client character set, if data is transported between a database and a client. The client character set is determined by the type of the client interface, such as OCI or JDBC, and the client configuration (for example, the NLS_LANG environment variable). -
Conversion from scaled ton unscaled data using Graph Acquired Binary Data
Hello !
I want to acquire temperature with a pyrometer using a PCI 6220 (analog input (0-5V)). I'd like to use the VI
Cont Acq&Graph Voltage-To File(Binary) to write the data into a file and the VI Graph Acquired Binary Data to read it and analyze it. But in this VI, I didn't understand well the functionnement of "Convert unscaled to scaled data", I know it takes informations in the header to scale the data but how ?
My card will give me back a voltage, but how can I transform it into temperature ? Can I configure this somewhere, and then the "Convert unscaled to scaled data" will do it, or should I do this myself with a formula ?
Thanks.Nanie, I've used these example extensively and I think I can help. Incidently, there is actually a bug in the examples, but I will start a new thread to discuss this (I haven't written the post yet, but it will be under "Bug in Graph Acquired Binary Data.vi:create header.vi Example" when I do get around to posting it). Anyway, to address your questions about the scaling. I've included an image of the block diagram of Convert Unscaled to Scaled.vi for reference.
To start, the PCI-6220 has a 16bit resolution. That means that the range (±10V for example) is broken down into 2^16 (65536) steps, or steps of ~0.3mV (20V/65536) in this example. When the data is acquired, it is read as the number of steps (an integer) and that is how you are saving it. In general it takes less space to store integers than real numbers. In this case you are storing the results in I16's (2 bytes/value) instead of SGL's or DBL's (4 or 8 bytes/value respectively).
To convert the integer to a scaled value (either volts, or some other engineering unit) you need to scale it. In the situation where you have a linear transfer function (scaled = offset + multiplier * unscaled) which is a 1st order polynomial it's pretty straight forward. The Convert Unscaled to Scaled.vi handles the more general case of scaling by an nth order polynomial (a0*x^0+a1*x^1+a2*x^2+...+an*x^n). A linear transfer function has two coefficients: a0 is the offset, and a1 is the multiplier, the rest of the a's are zero.
When you use the Cont Acq&Graph Voltage-To File(Binary).vi to save your data, a header is created which contains the scaling coefficients stored in an array. When you read the file with Graph Acquired Binary Data.vi those scaling coefficients are read in and converted to a two dimensional array called Header Information that looks like this:
ch0 sample rate, ch0 a0, ch0 a1, ch0 a2,..., ch0 an
ch1 sample rate, ch1 a0, ch1 a1, ch1 a2,..., ch1 an
ch2 sample rate, ch2 a0, ch2 a1, ch2 a2,..., ch2 an
The array then gets transposed before continuing.
This transposed array, and the unscaled data are passed into Convert Unscaled to Scaled.vi. I am probably just now getting to your question, but hopefully the background makes the rest of this simple. The Header Information array gets split up with the sample rates (the first row in the transposed array), the offsets (the second row), and all the rest of the gains entering the for loops separately. The sample rate sets the dt for the channel, the offset is used to intialize the scaled data array, and the gains are used to multiply the unscaled data. With a linear transfer function, there will only by one gain for each channel. The clever part of this design is that nothing has to be changed to handle non-linear polynomial transfer functions.
I normally just convert everything to volts and then manually scale from there if I want to convert to engineering units. I suspect that if you use the express vi's (or configure the task using Create DAQmx Task in the Data Neighborhood of MAX) to configure a channel for temperature measurement, the required scaling coefficients will be incorporated into the Header Information array automatically when the data is saved and you won't have to do anything manually other than selecting the appropriate task when configuring your acquisition.
Hope this answers your questions.
