Stuttering or jittery playback on DVD, not in FCP

Hi, I wasn't sure exactly where to post this since I don't know if it's a DVD Studio Pro problem, a Compressor problem, or a FCP problem.
In a nutshell, the problem is this: our short film looks like it plays fine in our (color-calibrated) progressive-scan monitor. When we view it on a large LCD HDTV (a friend's newly-purchased Samsung), anything in motion looks stuttery (people, their shadows, any pans with the camera). Some things stutter worse than others, looks like it might have to do with areas of high contrast (people's shadows gliding across lit areas). We don't see these problems on our own CRT TV (a 15-year-old 20" SD tv).
The question is, does this have something to do with the samsung tv - its sharpness looks like it's set way too high - or maybe with how we encoded the DVD or even compressed the FCP sequence in the first place?
We've tried applying motion blur to some of the pans, we've tried antiflicker filters to some moving shots, but these don't seem to fix the stuttering problem (and since you can only see it once it's on DVD playing on the big lcd hdtv, it's hard to do lots of parameter fiddling).
Any ideas about what could be going on? I'm hoping this is a simple matter of some compressor or dvd studio setting, or maybe we need a special fcp filter for the moving shots.
There are 3-way color corrector filters on just about every clip, if that makes a difference.
It's never been interlaced at any stage of the game, so I don't think that will be a problem.
Shot with: Canon XH-A1 in 24p mode, 1/24 shutter speed, 16:9.
Software/hardware info:
Captured directly into FCP from the HDV tapes, sequence settings are the standard 23.98 1440x1080 ("anamorphic").
Monitor: Dell 2404WFP (ultrasharp lcd monitor), connected to a Matrox MXO to do the color calibration
Compressor settings: DVD 16:9 90 minutes "best", then I upped the data rate just a bit (I think it was 7.2 and now it's 7.4). Tried default GOP settings, then tried IBBP (or maybe that was the default) and IBP as well. Otherwise, no changes to defaults.
Final Cut Studio (version 1), latest updates (so FCP 5.1.4, etc.).
DVD Studio Pro settings - all defaults. Took compressor's .m2v and .ac files, added them to a track, burned a DVD (Verbatim DataLife) at 2x speed.
If it matters, we edit on either a MacBookPro (early 2008) or an iMac (2007) core2duo about 2.2GHz each, max memory (4GB and 3GB respectively).
Thanks in advance!
kyle

Just an edit to my post - I tried hooking up the matrox mxo to a CRT TV and it looked fine (well, no stuttering). The sequence apparently doesn't have stuttering in it to begin with. So it must have been the LCD HDTV we tested on.
Just got a chance tonight to test on another plasma hdtv (different model - panasonic) and there was a bit of stuttering there. So maybe the tv's sharpness is an issue? Both TVs that showed stuttering (a plasma and lcd hdtv) were set with very high sharpness values, and a CRT TV (pretty standard 20" model) and the samsung plasma HDTV (low sharpness setting) didn't show stuttering. So maybe we're at the mercy of sharpness settings, though I'm lost as to why that would cause this kind of effect.
Is that a probable cause of stuttery playback of motion shots - the sharpness setting of the TV?

Video portion of Nightwish DVD not playing correctly on Quicktime.  It is not a smooth playback. A little jerky. Is there an easy slution to the problem?

I worded my question incorrectly. It isn't a DVD I'm having the problem with, it' s a Nightwish concert download form iTunes I am having the video portion of the video that plays not smoothy. Like it is moothing it short little segments, not a steady flow!

  • IMovie 13 - initial frames stuttering when played from a DVD

I've edited a short movie (my first) on iMovie 13 and saved it to file and thereafter burned it to a Verbatim 4.7 DVD+RW disc.   The movie operates fine when played on QuickTime but stutters for the first 30 seconds or so when played on my TV via a DVD player.   Anyone got any ideas as to what might cause this and suggestions as to how to fix it please?

    Hi
Most common origin to this are:
Brand of DVD used - NoName, Memorex etc cheap brands might work as Data-DVDs - BUT NOT as Video-DVDs
Type of DVD used - I only use SL-DVD-R as they also playback on older DVD-players. DVD+R for newer DVD-players. Never ever DVD+/-RW. Dual-Layers usually creates more problems than Single-Layers
BURN SPEED - Very IMPORTANT factor - I never go faster than x4 - Normally I use x2
Material used - Video Codec, Photo and Audio file formats
Video-Codec: StreamingDV, AIC and HDV (I use)
Photo: .jpg - NO .bmp or other - all converted to .jpg first
Audio: .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or 44.1kHz (as on Audio-CDs) - NO .mp3, wma etc ailient formats - all converted to ..aiff 16-bit 48kHz or 44.1kHz first
Free Space: on Start-Up (Macintosh HD) Hard Disk - I never go less than 25Gb when doing Video-DVDs (for SD-Quality Video - if HD material is used 4-5 times more are a safe low level) (Other external Hard Disks - DO NOT COUNT as space here can not be addressed by Mac OS or iDVD for it’s massive use of .temp files)
Dusty DVD-burner Laser: I use a Cleaning DVD (no liquid but the one with brushes) from time to time.
Harmed DVD-burner Laser: Easy to do by burning more than three DVDs at a time - I let it rest for 30 minutes till next batch of three DVDs. If this happened - then only a costly repair will help. It will not heal by it self.
OBS: There are more than one Laser in the DVD-Burner so other functions might work OK as Playback CD/DVDs and even burn CDs. Still being broken.

  • Has Premiere Elements 12 fixed the jittery playback issues from CS4?

I use Premiere Pro CS4 to edit my videos. I shoot with a Canon DSLR the 60D and import the video files straight into Premiere Pro without the extra transcoding step. (too much trouble to transcode the raw video with every clip). I get jittery and jerky motion in the left hand Source Monitor, when I make my in and out point edits. It plays fine once I have made my edits and render them in the right hand Program Monitor. I have heard that this has been fixed in version CS5 and higher. I can't afford to buy the CS program again, but could purchase Premiere Elements 12 the latest version. Would the jittery playback still be there in the left Source Monitor window of Elements 12, or has it been fixed in all forward versions newer than CS4?
Also if there is a way to make the imported video play smooth in the Source Monitor directly from CS4, without the transcoding process, I would like to hear about that for sure. Thanks for your help guys. Ken in Toronto.

    Ken
I am surprised that the Premiere Pro group did not answer your Premiere Pro question before transferring your thread to the Premiere Elements Forum. The Premiere Pro question seems to be the immediate one. Your question seems to have been ignored by the Premiere Pro people
Also if there is a way to make the imported video play smooth in the Source Monitor directly from CS4, without the transcoding process, I would like to hear about that for sure.
An answer to that might avoid you having to get involved with a new program, Premiere Elements 12.
Nonetheless, I cannot offer you any guarantee about editing 60D footage in Premiere Elements 12. I would need lots of details of your specific video properties and computer environment to approach an answer. Your best and quickest answer will come from downloading and installing Premiere Elements 12 and determining its compatibility in your computer environment and if it meets your video editing needs.

  • DVD not working properly when played on DVD player

I created a DVD using FCP and DVDSP, it plays fine on my Mac and my regular DVD player. However, it plays once through on a TV Guardian DVD Player and then will not play again. I don't know much about these players but they filter foul language and such when playing DVDs. The DVD that I created doesn't have foul language or anything that would be considered objectionable on it.
Has anyone had experience with these types of players or this situation?
Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   DVD Studio Pro

Another thing to check is your bitRates and whether you encoded the audio to A.Pack/Dolby. I have often seen machines play once or twice then start having playback issues or not play. It can be related to the encode rates (and it may not behave across different machines the same way, in other words it will continue to play fine on some players and not another)

  • How to I burn an imovie for playback on DVD?

I'm brand new to MacBook and imovie. I created a movie burned it a DVD, but it won't play on my DVD player. What is the correct process for burning an imovie project for playback on DVD player?

If you like to make DVDs, give iMovie 06 a try.
I use both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06, if I want to make a DVD I prefer iMovie 06. iMovie 08 is not as DVD friendly as iMovie 06.
iMovie 08 has replaced "Share to iDVD" with "Share to media browser". Also iMovie 08 cannot set chapter markers, this has to be done with another program.
When using iMovie 06, one mouse click will set a chapter marker EXACTLY where you specify. In just a few seconds set all your chapter markers. When you are done editing just "share to iDVD 08" and all of your chapter markers will be there!
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

Premiere Elements 12 DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc that will not play back on the ONKYO player....
If you take the VIDEO_TS Folder from the DVD disc that will not playback as DVD-VIDEO on DVD in your player and look inside it, do you find a file named VTS_01_1.VOB or possibily VTS_02_1.VOB? If so, can you play that file back on one of your computer players? These are video files.
Can you take the Premiere Elements 12 DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc and play it back on the computer with Windows Media Player or VLC player?

  • Qosmio G30-E10: No Playback of DVD`s with "Toshiba HD DVD Player"

    Hi all,
If I try to playback a normal DVD (not a HD-DVD) with the Toshiba HD-DVD Player Software, I get the following message from the HD-DVD Player:
"This player has no DVD Playbackfunction. Please try an appropriate application for DVD playback"
HD-DVD Drive has current firmware. HD-DVD Player is on current patchlevel 4.20.16.
DVD-Playback with InterVideo WinDVD works fine!
Notebook is a Qosmio G30-E10, with Vista Ultimate (Factory standard).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Sincerely
    Uwe

    Hello
Have you ever ask yourself why Toshiba install two players on this HD-DVD notebook? Probably not.
With short words: HD-DVD player is designed for playing HD-DVD movies only. For watching usual DVD movies use DVD player. For this purposes use WinDVD player.
Bye and enjoy your great Qosmio notebook.

  • Problems with playback of dvd on another dvd player

When I playback a dvd I've created, once in awhile I'll get a little stutter in the picture and sound. Not too often, but it occasionally happens. If I reverse the dvd picture to somewhere just before the stutter and play again, there is no stutter.
I'm thinking it is an issue with the dvd player and not the burned dvd itself. Am I correct or could it be something else?

Need more info on the DVD Player like brand and model number.
Also what media are you using?
Might be as easy as using a quality DVD Lens cleaner kit from Maxell or 3M.

  • Extremely jittery playback of certain purchased TV shows

i have purchased and rented lots of HD on apple TV, but recently i bought several different episodes (at different times) of abc's Life on Mars in HD and all of them have occasionally jittery playback. i've reset the apple tv, still the same results. other purchased programs not showing any of this, just this series. I have tried syncing the specific episodes directly to the apple tv hard drive with the same results.
anyone had trouble like this with one particular season of a series?

I have the same problem with lots of movies and TV programmes. I have completely blanked my Apple TV and re sync'd but I get the same issue.
Funny enough I have another apple TV connected to another TV and the same sync'd movies do not have an issue there.
My thoughts are it is either this apple TV or the TV.. I will try connecting this apple TV to the other TV and see what happens.

  • Dvd not burning properly, not recognized by DVD Player

I have not burned video DVD's for several months until this week when I find that disks burned from disk images created by IDVD no longer burn properly. They are not recognized by Apple DVD player or on two different commercial players that I have.  The disk images can be played with Apple DVD player, but once burned to disk, I get a message Disk not Supported.  I have tried burning disks from 3 reputable brands with the same results.  I just updated to OS X 10.8.5.  Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Jittery Playback with Soundtrack Pro

    Hi
I am working on a mix for my short film and just recently experienced jittery playback on the timeline which I am finding difficult to ignore. Can anyone shed some light on this? this FCS 5.1 (not FCS 2).
    I really appreciate it!!

Sometimes doing a simple reboot will fix this. Like video, it helps to have the audio files on a different drive than the system drive. If the files are on an external drive, try moving them to an internal one. Also, if you're using an external drive, try not to have another external drive mounted.
    Good luck.

  • Does anyone else experience jittery playback even with Mac Pro 2013?

I completed installing all my software on a new Mac Pro late 2013 and eagerly began working in Final Cut Pro 10.1.1 to see how much more improved my editing experience would be versus my old 2010 27" iMac. I was already experiencing jittery playback that would occur usually right after clicking the play button, but I'm sad to say that I'm still having that issue with the new computer.
    My specs are:
3ghz 8-core xeon, 32 GB RAM, dual Firepro D-500 graphics and my projects are not stored on a Pegasus R6 thunderbolt RAID 5.
I really expected skimming and playing back smoother like a hot knife through butter, but I'm dissapointed. I don't know if this is just a FCPX issue that still needs fixing, or if it's something that everybody experiences.

Thank you Russ. Here's more info and also when I said my projects were "not" stored on the RAID, that was a typo. They ARE stored in the same Library as the event on the RAID.
Media originals: H.264 MOV files shot with Canon DSLR at 23.98 fps 1920x1080.
    Transcoded files: Optimized and Proxy
Project settings: Manually set at 1920x1080, 23.98fps, Pro Res 422, 48kHz sound.
    Project playback: Proxy mode
There are no multicam clips created. I've created a few compound clips, the majority of which are for the purpose of linking a video track to another audio track (syncing cleaner audio recording).
The Library contains the one project I'm working on (the wedding video) and the one Event that contains the media. The footage in the event is of a wedding day with about 1,100 clips total, all of which are identical in format and settings so there's no mixing of frame rates, etc. The Library is stored where I store all my other libraries from other jobs: On the external thunderbolt Pegasus RAID.
I don't have any other events in the Library. My workflow is to have a new Library created for each job and keep everything together in it.
The current project I'm working on was created on 10.1.
To be fair, I'd like to clarify that the jittery issue is not a constant and is not as bad as when I was working on my 2010 iMac using a single disc external firewire drive to store my libraries. On that machine, I accepted the playback issue considering my firewire wasn't fast enough. The jittery playback I experience now on the Mac Pro is very minimal (Like sometimes for about 2 seconds right as I click Play), but my concern is why do I have it at all considering my footage type isn't as demanding as say multicam clips or complex composites or 4K media, and that the Mac Pro combined with the RAID are so fast.
I may perhaps have unreasonable expectations from this machine. The reason I decided to invest in it was to have a glitch free editing experience and not have to worry about slowing myself down to let the computer catch up. The thing is, If this is normal, then my frugal mind would tell me why not return this expensive Mac Pro and save thousands with a maxed-out new iMac combined with my thunderbolt RAID?

My ipod touch running 2.2.1 (5H11) which has always had updates etc kept up, has recently started stuttering during song playback. I have reset a couple of times and it plays fine for one song and starts all over again. Any thoughts?

I am continuing to have problems with getting my ipod touch restored. I am following the directions on the faq's but it seems that my touch continues to freeze up during the restoring nprocess. Itunes continues to sync, but the ipod screen remains unchanged.

It's probable that the CD 'side' of the combo drive has failed.  That you cannot boot from the recovery CD is pretty much proof of the failure.
