Sudden Reboot in 10.6

Ok there people,
I have had the strangest thing happen after I "upgraded" to 10.6. It has happened a couple of times now and I was wondering if anybody has had the same issue I have.
I start up Quicktime 10 I start to play a movie it runs for maybe 2 to 10 seconds then I press cmd -f for full screen and Boom instant reboot. Screen turns black and well you no how a reboot goes.
I can't seem to find a common ground for this issue other than the fact that I'm trying to get a movie to play full screen. It won't happen for like 30 times but than out of the blue.
I say mystery dear Watson, what do you guys think.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one having the same exact problem, I thought my Mac mini had an hardware problem.
I've had two of these "sudden reboot" since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I never had them before. In my case it happened after a mouse click: the screen froze for 2 seconds, then I got a blue screen and a "reboot".
These reboots seem quicker than normal reboots.
Looking at the console, it seems that the reboot occurred because the WindowServer crashed.
9/25/09 2:51:05 AM iTunes[28762] HIToolbox: received notification of WindowServer event port death.
9/25/09 2:51:05 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.WindowServer[90]) Job appears to have crashed: Segmentation fault
I did some research about the message "WindowServer event port death" and found that it was linked to sudden reboots that also happened for some users in Leopard (10.5).
Another thing I found is that other users have been experiencing "sudden log-outs" when the WindowServer process crashed. Since I have auto-login on my Mac, I suspect that what we've been experiencing are not "sudden reboots", but rather "sudden log-outs" where the OS suddenly logs out and then automatically logs-in.
I'm running 10.6.1... I hope this is going to be fixed with 10.6.2 because it's extremely annoying.

  • 5800 XM Suddenly Reboots

    Hello !
i've got grey (not blue or red) 5800 bought in april 2009.
Curently it has firmware 21.0.025 (when i've got this phone it has ver.20) updated through Nokia Software Update.
So there is one annoying problem. About one time a day, or may be in 2 days phone suddenly reboots when some action
    occurs.
    For example:
    - when i recieve SMS, not just recieve - when i'm pressing button "Show" (or whatever it named)
    - when i'm using GPS software and go to player (remember that 1 time)
    - or like today even when i was reading a book and screen was auto rotated when im turn the phone
    - or some other action i cannot remember
Anyway. This stuff never occurs when phone is just lying on a table, even if it playing some music and doing some
other stuff at the same time. It happens when you click something or switch to other app or recieve a call or sms. You need to do some action. And you cannot just try to force this stuff to happen. It will open 10 sms and on 11th it will reboot. It happens by itselfs suddenly (as i say not very often, but 1 time in about 1-2 days).
In 8 times of 10 it will just reboots and will not asking pincode - just nokia wellcome screen and then it goes to desktop. But sometimes it will ask pin.
It was happenning since i've bought the phone. At that time there was not any additional soft installed.
I thought it was bug in firmare but when i've updated to ver.21 thus bug doesn't go away.
so.... does any body knows what is this and what i need to do ???
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Here´s what I recommend you to do:
Backup all your contacts to an online service such as Nokia Ovi.
Update your phone´s FW with NSU
Hard reset your phone by pressing "Green", "Red" and "Camera" button at once during power up of the phone, you´ll perform a hard reset of the phone which will erase all the data.
After that everything should be working fine, if it doesn´t get back to us.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 2012 sudden reboots

I have a little problem with my MacBook now (Retina Mid 2012 15"). It sometimes, completely randomly, reboots, that is it stops responding, while looping the audio of about last second and then reboots. It runs on the latest version of OS X Yosemite.
The weird thing is it does not display anything like "Your computer had to restart because of a problem" and the logs do not contain a single clue of what could have caused this problem. It also does not contain any panic logs or anything. Previously it would only happen once a week, now it happen two days in a row. I tried resetting the SMC and the PRAM, but it still continues crashing.

    Hello....
a couple hours ago Ive read an article, which was written, that the Macbook Pro Retina from mid 2012 till end of 2014 have a hardware problem concerning ur behavior of ur macbook. Sudden reboots, stop to responding,  unable to play videos correctly and symptoms of seeing of blurry pics. Resolution of these problems require to contact apple at the applestore and make an arrangement with them to repair that hardware problem. Of course as a gesture of good will from apple. Im using a macbook pro retina mid 2012 have not these symptoms but at my next stop near an applestore i gonna check the macbook just in case.
Think that is exactly what happened to u and apple gonna fix this.

  • Sudden rebooting becoming a real pain!

    Hi
I've been using this board quite happily for a couple of months or so and I like it but just recently, I've been getting sudden reboots for no apparent reason which, once back on the desktop, I'm informed that Windows has recovered from a serious error.  I must admit that this is becoming a real pain now and I don't know what's causing it.
A few minutes ago, I just pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up Task Manager and the computer just restarted for no reason.  Every so often, it seems like I just have to hit one key and it reboots
I have read threads in this forum about users who had had similar problems and as far as I am aware, my PSU is up to the job - see system spec and my CPU temp, using stock heatsink with thermal pad is around 44Cat idle.  I also have two fans inside the Enermax PSU and another 'exhuast' fan at the back of the case.  The DDR voltage is set to 2.70v and the AGP voltage is set to 1.65v.  The content of the log file that was created is as follows:
    Microsoft Windows
The system has recovered from a serious error

The following files will be included in this error report:

There is another file inside the "WER1.tmp/dir00" called "sysdata" which is an XML doc but I can't make any sense of it.
    HELP!
    Regards

Hi and thanks to all who responded to my post.
Ok, to Danny, I downloaded "Memtest86" and after extraction, I now have an ISO file.  When I burn the ISO to CD,  does it create a 'bootable' CD with which I boot the computer with it or do I need to actualy create a bootable CD first?  Also, what tests need to be run?  See last few paragraphs.
MarkA:  I looked at the link you provided and I am already running XP Home with SP1 and ALL updates that are available at this time.  I have saved the link so i can look at it later regarding the "pagefile".  See last few paragraphs.
Gio1:  My DDR Ram is in slots 1 & 3 and I may try moving the sticks to 2 & 4.  See last few paragraphs.
SoCalMX:  My AGP voltage has been at 1.65v since I build the system and I have never had any problems with rebooting until recently (but see my last few paragrahs below), but I will give it a try at 1.60v.   BTW, I don't play games on the computer.
To all of you:  I forgot to mention that I have been using the board for a couple of months or so and I was very happy with it but around a week ago, I enabled the Promise controller and moved my ATA133 drives from IDE1 to IDE3 and then updated the WinXP Promise S-ATA(378(tm) drivers from v1.00.16 to v1.00.29 and that's when I got my very first error message since I've been using the board, and the message was something like "IRQ less than or not equal to etc, etc, etc".
BTW, the drivers have been rolled back to v1.00.16.
I posted my problems in this forum and after trying a few suggestions from user's, I moved my drivers back to IDE1.  I now don't get the IRQ message - at least not since I moved them back but I am getting the error as shown in my first post in this thread.
So, just to clarify, I had absolutely no problems with this board until I moved my ATA133 drives to IDE3 and updated the drivers and that's when the problems started.  I have updated my PSU to the one shown in my system 'specs' below.
BTW, the drivers have been rolled back to v1.00.16 but I'm just wondering if the previously updated drivers are still causing problems and I'm thinking of formatting and re-installing XP to see if that will solve the issue?

  • My system suddenly reboots, have tried all kinds of stuff.

I have just bought a new system.  This is the first time I have built one from scratch.  I Got it all together and windows installed.  But it will just suddenly reboot for now reason.  I went into system properties and sent the system to not reboot when a problem accors.  but know I get a blue screen when ever a problem comes up it tells we what to do.  Can't really do it.  My system is bare.  I thought it was the psu.  So I went and got another one(430W).  Still same thing.  I have reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows. same thing.  I took the MB out to make sure that I didn't leave any stand off's not screwed in.  Nothing.  I dont know what else it could be.  I was thinking about the memory.  I'm gonna get some new memory and replace what I have in there now and see if that works.

What is the system ideal temp and what is the temp and full load... Are u sure u have mounted the cooler correctly and used some thermal paste or pad....

  • MBA 11' - Sudden reboot / Crash

    Good day
It is a few months now that my MBA 11' every now and then crashes or rather i should say suddenly reboots, as the screen goes blue and the system reboots as if nothing had happened (no data recovered, no software running etc).
No specific software seems to be blamed, as this has happened when i was just browsing the internet (with no whatsoever multitasking) or playing a videogame or just using itunes.
Any ideas about the possible reason for that ?
    Thanks in advance !

  • E52 is suddenly rebooted.

    I have a problem with my E52.
    My E52 is suddenly rebooted.
It happens in the following cases.
(1)Arriving a call while charging (often)
    (2)Talking while charging (often)
(3)Handing over in packet transmission (sometimes)
Is this an initial malfunction or software bug?

A cell phone today has to be considered (anyway) a sort of "personal assistant", I don't mind price for that and I am not a rich. Such as I don't mind price for my computer (within reasonable).
I am a professional and I am hardly a Macintosh user (a good user not a fanatic one), my dream is something like a Tungsten PalmOS with a Nokia phone inside (everybody must do his job).
I don't know HTC but I guess it comes with Windows Mobile...
I wouldn't change to a BB or iPhone (a gadget more than the phone i need)... probably I am going to be patient  for a while, to use my E51, waiting and hoping Nokia will release a new model, small and solid amonf the E5x family.

  • IMac suddenly reboots

    Hi,
Last month I bought a new iMac (27inch i7 processor and 8gb ram), and after an hour or four it suddenly rebooted every ten minutes or so. I brought it back to the official reseller so they would fix it, I got my iMac back and after a few hours it started happening again! So I brought it back again, they said they didn't know what caused the problem and would try to fix it again, they tried replacing to power supply to the hard disk. But this didn't change a thing so I brought it back again.. I asked if they were able to give me a new iMac, they said they were not allowed by Apple.
Anyone experienced the same issues or has a solution?
I changed to Apple as I thought they would offer better quality, turns out I only have problems with it. (sorry for my crappy English, I'm Belgian)
    Kind Regards,

Well, when it happens to you, then it is not an extremely uncommon one. I am not a mac novice, far from it having bought macs since day 1, but this is the first time I am facing this spontaneous rebooting.
This does not happen to my other imac which is standing next to this. My take on this is that it has something to do with Snow Leopard. The other imac 24" is still running on leopard. I have done research on this and this problem is fairly common, sometimes running under the thread: spontaneous reboots under Snow Leopard.
What's infuriating is that the reboots just happens very randomly; there are no set pattern. Poofs, the screen goes black and then restarts. I have switched off every startup program that might cause the problem but to no avail.
But currently I might have found the solution. The 27" imac works pretty well for the first few months before the problems started recently. I happened to read one thread that temperature might be the problem. I downloaded Temperature Monitor and found out that the gpu temperatures were touching 70C and cpu temperatures were nearing 60C. So next I downloaded smc fan control and bump up the fan speeds. GPU are now down to 62C and CPU to 48C. So far no reboots. Touch wood.
I sincerely hope that this is the cause of the problems but I will update once I test this out longer. BTW my machines run 24/7 everyday. Others being 2 other minis and a G5 tower. My guess is that dust buildup over time might have exacerbated the heat problem and coupled that with the heat spell we are having at the moment. The reasons why the macs are not affected could be that SL has lower thresholds. I have my Macbook battery died on me right after I installed Snow Leopard but that is another story. My ancient iBook battery is still running fine! Go figure.

  • [solved] Sudden reboot while watching youtube video

    *[edit]*
Nevermind. I've just noticed that the over clock is blinking. Apparently the power went out for a second.
    Well, that was fun.
    *[/edit]*
I was watching a video on youtube just now (on x86_64, with the flashplugin package from [multilib]) when the system suddenly rebooted. During the reboot it recovered and recommitted the journal and everything seems to be fine, but now I'm worried.
I can't find anything in the logs to indicate what could have happened but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. What should I check?
I don't even know if this has anything to do with flash. I had lmms open too, and maybe cmus.
For your amusement, here are the thoughts that when through my head right after the screen suddenly went black:
wtf, did I forget to plug in the charger again?
wait, i'm not on the laptop
    oh fsck*
    * The last time a system suddenly died on me, the psu had burnt out... which itself was funny, because I noticed the smell of burnt plastic and rubber before it happened. I assumed it was coming from outside, closed the window, and went to get a drink. When I came back, the system was dead and I had a little epiphany regarding the source of the previous smell.

    - are you using an UPS? Maybe there was a small power outage and w/o a battery support your computer went off and on when the power came back a second later.
    - a short-circuit of some kind?
Heh, I just realize the same thing and edited the OP before I saw your post.
I didn't even think of that possibility before I saw the clock though, because the computer instantly rebooted. I've never noticed the power go out for less than a second.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • Sudden reboot

My MacBook Pro has on many occasions rebooted when closing the laptop. This happens with multiple users of computer. The lid is NOT closed with much force and then placed either on a table or soft couch. The big indicator of this sudden reboot is the intro start up tune that is played as we walk away from the computer. Is this the normal behaviour when the computer recognized rough handling? I presumed that the computer would simply park the hard drive but not reboot.
One thing I am not able to confirm is whether this occurs with the power supply connected or not. I have checked the battery which appears to be secure and locked in place trying to rule out a sudden power loss.
Reboots do not occur during regular use.

    Hi there,
had the same problem, not that often, but I was kind of shocked, when suddenly my MacBook rebooted. Good to know, that it seems to be a software error. I never realized, that it only happend with Keynote. I thought it had to do with my external connected monitor, which hat to change resolution or something similar and when I started the presentation (play) then it suddenly rebooted. Can anybody confirm this with an external monitor? It never happend without one.
I mean, that does not really help, because if you have an external projector connected
Hopefully there will be also a fix for iWork 06. Bought this 4 weeks ago and there is apparently no free or reduced price update of iWork 08...
Maybe one can give it back and get the money back
    Good luck,

  • P965 NEO & E6400 sudden reboot

    Hello all!
I recently built a new system:
    MSI P965 NEO
    C2D E6400
    Gigabyte GeForce 7900GT
    2x 1Gb DDR2 Aeneon 667MHz CL5 5-5-5-15
Be Quiet! Blackline BQT P5 420W
    320Mb SATA2 Seagate hd
    Samsung Writemaster DVD-RW
The system started up and I installed Win XP Pro SP2 without any problems. Now the problem is it sometimes suddenly reboots without blue screen or any error messages. It happens most often when playing Oblivion but has happened while playing DVD's or using Opera as well. The CPU runs at stock speed and I've never tried to overclock it.
First I thought the CPU was overheating since the temps were high(ish), I use EVEREST to measure the temps since it shows core1 & core2 independently. At full load the core temps were close to 60 deg. C with the original Intel heatsink. I replaced the original heatsink with a Scythe Ninja Plus (a huge heatsink with a 120mm fan) , now it idles below 40 C and peaks at around 50 C when fully loaded. Unfortunately it didn't fix the rebooting problem.
Since updating the BIOS from 1.4 to 1.5 made a huge difference I'm starting to think it might be something mainboard related. With v1.5 the system has rebooted itself only a few times and only while playing Oblivion. I've run EVEREST's "System stability test" multiple times without problems.
Can anyone think of what's causing it and how I could make it more stable? Any ideas would be much appreciated!

    Thanks for the suggestions guys!
I've run Memtest86+ (the DOS version) and it passed several times without errors. I've also tried running the memory both 667MHz and 553MHz which made no difference. It does seem like a memory problem though so maybe I should try running the memories one stick at a time?
